  • IMac DV firmware trap- but not the usual symptoms, help?

    ok, ok, I admit, I got nailed by the Firmware Trap on my friend's iMac DV 500, but I don't have the usual no-video and shutdown problems typical of the classic firmware issue. The iMac has video, and boots fine from Panther install disks, and does not shut itself down, but it won't install anything, and it won't complete booting from OS 9 install CD (it gets partway thru, but Finder won't load) or utility CDs (only goes as far as splash screen in TechToolPro OS9.2)
    I knew about the update firmware issue, but since it already had OS X installed, I thought that it had the needed update, whose exact # I didn't remember and which looked correct to me in the System Profiler.. 4.1.7 (of course, now I remember, it's actually 4.1.9). The install did not give me any firmware warning, but the Panther install failed with massive errors (according to log). Eventually I read that OS10.1 could be (and was) installed and running without the update, as of course it would, having been released before the update... but that didn't occur to me at the time.
    There is no working OS on the drive- I'd chosen to erase it first. Before I realized that firmware might be the issue, I (uh-oh) started it up from the Panther CD again, ran Disk Utility (which reported it "repaired" the HD)and (cringe) also booted from an OSX-based TechToolPro CD, which started up, then shut down/restarted when i tried to run tests, and would not reboot from that CD again. If it tries to start up from just the HD it comes to the blinking folder question mark screen... as it would, having no working system installed. Video seems completely normal.
    I have tried an Open Firmware reset, pulled and reinstalled the RAM and backup battery, unplugged the HD, reset the logic board- nothing changed. The Sleep button trick won't work because it will not go to sleep, and it has video anyway.
    My question... what, if anything, to try now?
    I have video and start-up, but i can't get OS 9 to boot far enuf to install, which I need to do to be able to update the firmware. Should I pull the drive and install to it separately, then reinstall it and try to boot from it, or is this a waste of time (ie, does it sound like the logic board is already irretrievably whacked)? Any other ideas?
    I tend macs for several friends and relatives who have them (non-profit!), and don't want it to get out that I inadvertently killed one!

    I found these links for another topic thread. They have the technician's service manual for slot loader iMacs, in PDF format (both link to the same manual). There is a section in the manual on trouble-shooting, and it includes a section on the PMU reset procedure (pages 196 and 197).

  • Sending to printer- are these requests the usual?

    Hello,
    I've worked my way through my first big InDesign project thanks to this forum, now I have a question about the final processes.
    I know about checking pre-flight and using the package function (I'm working on a Mac 10.4 with CS3) to send my links and fonts, but I've just received this email from the woman I'm sending everything to who is then going to send it all to the printer (she wants me to send it to her first to make sure there are no major errors or missing elements before it goes to the printer). She included some extra things she wants me to do to prep the document, and I was just curious if this is the usual way of doing it so I know in the future.
    Here's the email:
    Here are a few tips to getting your file ready for press
    1) check that all placed files (photos) are  CMYK tif files – make sure to send all the tif files.
    2) convert all colours used in the file to CMYK (process)
    3) convert all fonts to outline: select each text box and under the TYPE MENU – create outline.
    Also, wondering why all fonts should be outlines? Does this maybe help in case there are fonts missing?
    Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Congratulations on finishing the project.
    Your concerns about the final directions on prepress are very well founded.
    1) check that all placed files (photos) are  CMYK tif files – make sure to send all the tif files.
    A few, more modern print shops will handle the RGB > CMYK conversions. But most will ask for CMYK files. I have been begging my publisher to keep RGB files, but they won't do it. So I have been converting all my RGB photos to CMYK and having to merge layers, flatten, etc. It feels like I'm destroying my children when I flatten, but it is what my publisher wants.
    2) convert all colours used in the file to CMYK (process)
    There's nothing wrong with doing this. In fact, you should have specified those colors as process to begin with.
    3) convert all fonts to outline: select each text box and under the TYPE MENU – create outline.
    OK, this one is the big problem.
    There are SOME screen printers, especially those who do promotional items, that insist on outlines. There are some legitimate reasons for this, especially when it comes to screen printing.
    But the idea of converting all the text in a brochure is wrong. It could cause things not to look good.
    I understand where the candidate is coming from, but, if she needs to send the file to places that might not have the font, suggest a PDF with embedded fonts.
    Meanwhile I applaud your diligence on this project. You've known enough to ask the right questions.

  • Flash problem in IE - not the usual one.

    I am new to the game here. I've created some pages that use a
    Flash video player. The user can click on a list of available
    videos (XML generated), and the video will load in the player and
    play.
    Works fine in IE and Safari on Mac.
    Works terrible in Firefox on Mac and Windows (seems to need
    to buffer for a long time before play starts - longer than the
    specified buffer time).
    In IE for Windows - videos play fine and load fast. but -
    activating a video seems to "lock out" the rest of the page -
    rendering the ability to click through to other links not possible.
    Eventually, if i smash around enough, i can get a link to work -
    but its a terrible experience. This doesn't seem to be the "usual"
    Flash problem in IE (ie click to activate) - but I'm new - so this
    may be a related issue?
    Help??? I don't even know where to begin.
    address:

    thank you in advance.

    Try changing the line:
    td { }
    in your CSS file 'basic.css' to:
    td { vertical-align: top; }
    This will align all table cells on your web site to the top.

  • Why does my iMac keep waking up (I've checked the usual suspects)?

    Starting a couple of weeks after I got my new iMac (3.4 GHz Core i7) -- so about two or three weeks ago -- it started spontaneously waking from sleep (or turning on its screen, if it wasn't asleep), every few minutes. I can't figure out why.
    I've checked to see if there are spurious input sources, and as far as I can tell, there aren't.
    Wake on Network Access is turned off (even though I actually would prefer it to be on, I've turned it off while trying to sort this out.
    I don't have, as far as I can tell, any new apps or tools installed that would be waking it up.
    If I quit all my applications, it doesn't seem to affect anything.
    The wake reason string when I search logs is "EHC1". That doesn't tell me much.
    Any ideas on what else I can check?

    Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
    Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 2
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 4
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
    Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
    If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
    Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
    If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
    If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

    I just upgraded my system to Mountain Lion. If I restore my Macbook Pro back to the very beginning state, will the Mountain Lion be removed or not? Thank you

    The only problem that I forsee is that some have reported problems getting machine-specific builds of Lion via Internet Recovery. Not sure if it's working yet or not. But you could give it a shot, I suppose. Basically what you want to do is 'prepare your computer for resale' - just like it came out of the box. Kappy, a pretty wonderful and very knowledgeable man, has tip for that which I have copied and will paste below:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
        1.    Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
        2.    After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
        3.    Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
        4.    Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

    Hi,
    Have you try to un-select the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) setting?
    Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
    Click Advanced, and then click to clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
    check box in the General area.
    Click OK.
    If the problem cannot resolve, the Run as administrator may selected.
    Go to Office default install location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12.
    Right-click EXCEL.EXE > Properties >
    Compatibility tab.
    Under Privilege Level, uncheck Run this program as an administrator
    check box.
    Best regards.

  • After upgrade to 10.10, can't send email (SMTP cert. error).  On previous version running on another machine, can still send find.  This new version is missing the "Usual Ports" checkbox option.  Can someone please help?

    I just upgraded to 10.10.  On the mail program, one of my accounts is having an issue sending email.  I am getting the following error message:
    The certificate for this server is invalid.
    Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
    But on another machine running Mavericks, I can still continue to send email.  The same is try from my iPhone 5S.
    On that machine running Mavericks the SMTP is configured as SSL and for "Usual Ports" (25, 465, 587) but THIS OPTION IS MISSING ON THE NEW VERSION.  On the new version I have tried configuring the port to 25 and then 465 and 587 with no success.  I have used the Network Utility to see if my provider is blocking me -- it is not.  I have no third-party software on this machine (anti virus).  I can receive email fine.  On the new Yosemitie Mail there are new checkbox options of Automatically check my settings and Allow unsecure connections.  I tried to uncheck SSL for SMTP but then it says it cannot send securely my passowrd and i need to check the option "Allow to send unsecurely".  I did that but the same error message keeps appearing.  So I have tried nearly everything I have been able to, all to no avail.  Please can somebody help?

    Thanks for your reply.  Yes, it is a POP account.  Incoming mail is fine.  My port for incoming is also 110.  But the outgoing port should be 587 (or 24, 465 and 587 as on Mavericks' "Usual Ports" option).  I am using the same configuration across three different devices and only the machine running Yosemite is having issues.  I notice in the new version of Mail there is no longer the "Usual Ports" option.  I am not sure this is the culprit or not.  But the fact is no matter how I configure it, it will not send mail for these particular servers.  I have multiple clients and only one is affected, meaning I can send email from other email addresses (different hosting contracts) on Yosemite but on this one particular one I cannot.

  • What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords?

    What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords? Any advantages to using one over the other? Do they appear differently in the generated index?
    RH9.0.2.271
    I'm using Webhelp

    Hi there
    When you create a RoboHelp project you end up with many different ancillary files that are used to store different bits of information. Many of these files bear the name you assigned to the project at the time you created it. The index file has the project name and it ends with a .HHK file extension. (HHK meaning HTML Help Keywords)
    Generally, unless you change RoboHelp's settings, you add keywords to this file and associate topics to the keywords via the Index pod. At the time you compile a CHM or generate other types of output, the file is consulted and the index is built.
    As I said earlier, the default is to add keywords to the Index file until you configure RoboHelp to add the keywords to the topics themselves. Once you change this, any keyword added will become a META tag in the topic code. If your keyword is BOFFO, the META tag would look like this:
    <meta name="MS-HKWD" content="BOFFO" />
    When the help is compiled or generated, the Index (.HHK) file is consulted as normal, but any topics containing keywords added in this manner are also added to the Index you end up with. From the appearance perspective, the end user woudn't know the difference or be able to tell. Heck, if all you ever did was interact with the Index pod, you, as an author wouldn't know either. Well, other than the fact that the icons appear differently.
    Operationally, keywords added to the topics themselves may hold an advantage in that if you were to import these topics into other projects, the Index keywords would already be present.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

    Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
    When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
    I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
    However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
    So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
    Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

    One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

  • "The home folder...isn't located in the usual place or can't be accessed" after 10.9 AD bind.

    Okay a little backstory here because I'm trying to eliminate or identify what I feel might be a bug in OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks.  Just FYI, I'm not our institution's AD admin, I just have rights to bind and query for this and that, but I can't make changes or really investigate our AD domain server/s:
    So we're an educational institution with lots of adjuncts that come and go each year.  Recently in August, I had about 5 cases where these adjuncts couldn't log in because of a cryptic "login failed" error.  I have my macs setup to create mobile accounts without confirmation.  I don't want ANY syncing going on just local user accounts created, but something in the profile creation process demands access to their network home folder.  Well these 5 users were brand spanking new and somehow didn't have permissions to their own network home folders that everyone else hasn't had a problem with before.  I had our admins fix the permissions, and they were able to login thereafter.  Our admins are still looking for what might have caused this, but still don't know....
    Recently I've been testing the same AD bind script I've always used on Mavericks.  It's a simple bash "dsconfigad" customized for our institution.  It seems to work successfully but on the login screen I get no usual "arrow" that allows me to back out and click "Other" and login to AD.  I reseated the Ethernet cord and checked the AD configuration in Directory Utility - it was all set correctly as per the script parameters.  When I clicked OK and exited out to the login screen, the Other option was working correctly.  I was able to login with my own credentials just fine.
    I needed to tweak my image a little so I wiped and reloaded the machine with the new image (nothing relevant to binding and users was changed).  Got the same "no arrow" issue and tried the same steps, which again worked after some monkeying around.  I tried to login with my credentials - failed.  Now I get "The home folder for user 'my username' isn't located in the usual place or can't be located."  I went into a local user admin account and tried to add my home folder manually, nogo.  I logged onto a windows machine and tried to mount the same home folder in Windows - access denied - this is the SAME type of thing that ended up happening to my adjuncts.  I don't know if they are related but it's certainly a strange coincidence.
    How could testing AD binds change my home folder permissions, or possibly even corrupt the folder altogether?  The network share/home folder that our macs smb communicate with as per the bind settings are on a windows server (to the best of my knowledge).  My guess previously with the adjuncts error is that despite the fact that I don't need or want the profiles created to sync, the default options turns this on for mobile accounts even though it doesn't select any actual folders for syncing, but because it still tries some sort of "handshake" or something initially, first logins fail without network home folder permissions.  Now it seems like something in the initial profile creation process might actually be corrupting the network home folder or changing its permissions.
    I would post the bind script but I'm not sure it's relevant, as another mac admin in a different area ran into the same error with one of his new users and he bound manually, not with a script.
    I'm kind of new to this sysadmin stuff, so does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to track down the cause of this and possibly fix it?  The network share admin can fix my permissions, but if I could break it when it was working once, I foresee this happening again.

    Here's the script I used previously that is not connecting to AD "completely" that causes the errors mentioned (I'm replacing institution info with "xxx"):
    echo -n "This computer needs to be renamed and bound to Active Directory.  Please enter the XXX Inventory Number from the affixed XXX label on the machine: "
        read userinput
        echo -n "Enter the XXXAdmin password (you will still be asked to enter this for system configuration changes): "
        read -s xxxpassword
        scutil --set ComputerName $userinput
        scutil --set LocalHostName $userinput
    # Active Directory Bind Script For OS X Client
        # Modified by Wade Wei according to previous popular bind script
        # Adapted for xxx by xxx
        echo "Binding to Active Directory…"
        echo -n "Enter AD admin username: "
        read adusername
        echo -n "Enter AD admin password (please wait after password submitted, do not press any keys): "
        read -s adpassword
        #Basic parameters

        useuncpath="enable"
        user_shell="/bin/bash"
        admingroups="domain admins,enterprise admins,xxx,xxx"
        namespace="domain"
        packetsign="require"
        packetencrypt="require"
        localuser="XXXAdmin"
        localpassword=$xxxpassword
        # Bind to AD

    Can anyone tell me if I need to update the script for Mavericks, and how?  Or should this be working and the bug is in Mavericks itself?

  • The order of topics in the Project Manager is not reflected when creating a PDF for review.

    Can't seem to find an answer to this in the forums...
    Using RH10.
    In the Project Manager pod is a default 'Project Files' folder.
    Within that I have a 'Topics' folder in which my topic files reside.
    Under the View menu, I have selected 'By Topic Title'. I understand that this displays the topics by their title as opposed to their file name. I understand that this is a display toggle only, and has no relation to the order of the topics - the alternative toggle is 'By File Name'.
    Notice in the image below, my topics are displayed by topic title, but aren't in alphabetical order. ...yet.
    There's a button at the top of this window for changing the sort order to 'Sort by Name', which has the result below.
    Ok, so now the topics are displayed by topic title, and in alphabetical order.
    Question 1: If that button toggles the view to display topics in 'alphabetical order', what on earth is the other order called? It's certainly not in order of file name, as I've checked a bunch of the topic filenames, and can't see any pattern/order to the this structure.
    Question 2: When I go to create a PDF for review (via Review > Create PDF for Review), the window that appears displays all the topics available to me to select for review. However, they're displayed in this other 'odd' sort order instead of 'alphabetical' order. The Help menu says that this window reflects the order of topics as it finds them in the Project Manager. However, what seems to be actually happening is it's displaying the topics based on the view you have selected under the View menu (i.e. either 'View by Topic Title' or 'View by File Name'), and regardless of which view toggle you have selected, the order of the topics is only ever this 'odd' sort order. In other words, in the 'Create PDF for Review' window, it appears I can never see the topic list in alphabetical order. Furthermore, it appears that the only way I can resolve this is to go back into the Project Manager, switch to 'odd' sort order, and manually drag all the topics into alphabetical order. ...I have hundreds of topics.
    Is there some way I can quickly change this 'odd' sort order to 'alphabetical'? There must be some underlying file with this order of topics in it (hopefully).

    Hi there
    I don't have an immediate answer for Question 2, but for Question 1, the topic order is "User Defined" as you are able to click and drag topics to create any arrangement that suits you. This was something added as a result of user feedback. Enough users asked Adobe to allow them to arrange topics this way that they made it a reality. The logic escapes me as I'm a user that normally expects software to list things in either ascending or descending alphabetical order.
    Perhaps Peter will pop in with a nice explanation of the PDF for Review sorting and Adobe's logic behind it.
    Cheers... Rick

    If neither of the above and you don't have the CD and can't find your tracks on the computer then they you're stuck.  A file recovery utility will cost $100, plus another $100 for an external drive to which to resue the files, and may not even work.  You can buy a lot of CDs for $200.
