The wait is over: Android 5.0 Lollipop will begin public rollout today

By tech2 News Staff /  04 Nov 2014 , 14:07For those of you who had been eagerly awaiting Android’s latest OS release, the Android Official Blog has put out a post saying that Android 5.0 Lollipop has started rolling out today. Google has confirmed that Android 5.0 Lollipop would be coming to all the Nexus devices – Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and tablets Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013 editi0ns) and Nexus 10. The Nexus 9 which has launched internationally comes baked in with Lollipop and so will the Google Nexus 6 when it comes out.Speaking on the importance of Material Design, the blog goes on to say, “A number of apps that you know and love have been working hard to build material design into their framework. It is important that every app be able to take on its own unique personality and experience while fitting in the larger system.” We have just seen the rollout of the new Gmail 5.0 app along with the Calender app, both of which come with Material Design. We are sure more Google apps will get the Material Design treatment soon.Motorola has confirmed the update to a majority of its phones available in the market, including the Moto X (1st Gen. & 2nd Gen.), Moto G (1st Gen. & 2nd Gen.), Moto G with 4G LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini. The latest update is that the Moto E, Moto G and Moto X devices would be getting the Lollipop updates within a month’s time.Apart from that Sony’s Z-series smartphones and tablets will be receiving the update as well. “We’ll be making Sony Mobile’s Android L upgrade available for the entire premium Z series: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.” Sony announced on its website.Similarly, HTC confirmed that it will be rolling out the Android L update within 90 days of receiving the final software from Google. However, it has only announced the update for its HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 devices as of now. Other select HTC devices will receive the update later on.For those of you who already own Nexus devices and can’t wait for the Lollipop update notification can manually check for one. Just head to Settings>About Phone>System Update>Check Now.

Hi supercujo What's the rush? I have a sony Xperia Z1 and I will wait until Sony and Telstra approve the up grade. My phone is working fine on 4.4.4. In 9 months time when my contract finishes I'll buy the lattest and by them we'll probably be saying Lollypop what? I can't understand why people must have the latest update only to find it does precious little to their out of date hardware of their existing phone. My phone is not a toy as I use it for business and some private work. JMHO Cheers

  • The wait is over. MacBook Pro is now available.

Got an email tonight saying that the MacBook Pros are shipping...
And the Apple Store reflects this also...
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa
That's all fine and dandy, but my MacBook Pro is still shipping on the 20th. Meh.
Figured it was worth posting the shipping change, or shipping not change, news.

    cdb2,
I understand your difficulty as I too am very eager
to upgrade from my aging system! (Actually, the
system is adequate for my needs but I would like the
    better screen for my photograghy.)
    Maybe this will help:
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may
be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
    The Epistle of James 1:4
    God Bless,
    Carl
    Carl,
If only I could live by the Gospel when it comes to computers!
Just now I am in a state of **** for the MBP and am feeling a great deal of Envy towards those who have them!
But that through God's grace I may be perfect and entire I will pray for patience - one of the seven contrary virtues (contrary to "anger" according to Prudentius, but I've not - I promise - felt anger towards anyone (not even the corporate entity which is Apple!) during this waiting game)!
"...we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience." - Romans 8:25 (RSV)
That shall be my verse of the week!
And I, too, need the speed (and the screen) for photography purposes... I have gigabytes and gigabytes of photos to go through still... my excuse for not ordering the MBP when it was announced was that I was in Antarctica and I filled 17 1 Gig cards! A lot of color correction needs to be done!

i tunes repeatedly asks for my password when i attempt to purchase a song/movie etc.  anyone else have this issue??  the password works fine for everything except buying something....

Same issue. I complete one purchase and on the next one I get stuck in an endless loop of it asking for my password over and over. I have to close iTunes, reopen and it's fine, but that is ridiculous to do for every purchase.

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop FAQ

    Android 5.0 Lollipop FAQ
    Hi all forum users!
I have put together an list of questions with answers that we often see in regards to the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
This FAQ will be updated whenever its needed.
Please check this topic first, your question may be listed and already have an answer.
Why am I not able to update to Android 5.0 Lollipop?
The Android 5.0 Lollipop just as many other of our software updates rolls out gradually over regions, networks and time. Therefore it is not possible for us to tell you exactly when it will arrive for your specific device but stay up-to-date with our product blog for the latest information about software roll out and devices.
You will receive a notification in your Xperia device when the Android 5.0 update is available for you.
If the Android 5.0 Lollipop update fails this can be due to server overload so I kindly ask you to just try again later. This happens from time to time whenever we release a new software update.
Why can’t I see any lock screen notification?
When going through the setup wizard of Android 5.0 you will be prompted with a setting for lock screen notifications. If you miss this you can configure it later via Settings > Sound & notification > When device is locked > Show all notification content
NOTE: If you have configured any Exchange Active sync account with the Android native client it may run policies which restrict the feature of having lock screen notifications.
I’m not able to use ”Swipe” or “None” as screen lock
If you previously had a screen lock such as PIN or pattern password set to your device before the Android 5.0 Lollipop update you may experience problems changing the screen lock back to Swipe or None.
To fix this simply go to Settings > Security > Clear credentials.
This won’t delete any personal data such as contacts, calendar messages etc.
Where did Bluetooth and Face-unlock go?
The lock features Face-unlock and Bluetooth unlock has now been moved into the menu called Smart Lock. In order to activate Smart Lock you will need to first set a secure screen lock such as PIN or pattern password. In order to activate Smart Lock you will need to first set a secure screen lock such as PIN or pattern password. You can do this and find Smart Lock via Settings > Security.
    Where is Location based Wi-Fi?
I our Android 5.0 Lollipop update the developers have worked hard on improving the power management, including Wi-Fi scanning. So there was no longer any reason for keeping Location based Wi-Fi since Android 5.0 has such improvements made to the Wi-Fi scanning.
Where is the Update Center application?
In the Android 5.0 Lollipop update the Update Center application has now been replaced with the What’s New app. What’s new will notifiy you about all our media application updates and help you download them to you device.
System updates will now be managed via the native menu found, Settings > About phone > Software update.
My messages are gone after the Android 5.0 update?
After you update to Android 5.0 the system will need some time to index all your messages and depending on how many you have this process can take up to 30 min. So no worries, they are still with you.
Various applications crash after the Android 5.0 update?
After you’ve installed the Android 5.0 update you may experience that some of your downloaded applications may crash suddenly or not work at all. The reason for this that you may be running an old installation of the application itself and you may need to reinstall the application or contact the application developer to check for Lollipop compatibility.
How do I clear several notifications at the same time?
In Android 5.0 the notification panel has two steps. To be able to clear all your notifications with just one press you will need to access the second layer of the notification panel. You can do this by swiping the status bar down twice or use two fingers when swiping the status bar down.
Where did all Chrome tabs go?
In the latest version of Google Chrome all tabs are by default merged with recent apps.  If you want the old school way of switching between tabs just open Chrome > Press the three vertical dots > Settings > Merge tabs and apps.
How do I make my Xperia device visible for Bluetooth networks?
In Android 5.0 some changes has been made to Bluetooth visibility. All you need to do is go to Settings > Bluetooth > And enable Bluetooth.
As long as you have Bluetooth enabled and stand in this menu your device will be visible. When you leave this window your device will not be visible any more.
Some fields turn turquoise from time to time?
The reason for this is because some applications and themes are not yet fully optimized for Android 5.0 and therefore the system will display a fall back color, which in this case is the native turquoise Android Lollipop color.

I'm beginning to like Android 5.0 features, but it can be a little intimidating at first. Just take a few minutes (or days for some people) and  security is not really a big issue.

  • I am trying to download the new OS Mavericks. It has been saying 'Waiting' for over an hour? How can I fix this?

I am trying to download the new OS Mavericks. It has been saying 'Waiting' for over an hour? How can I fix this?

with a little patience - people all over the world are downloading mavericks.
alternatively you could restart your computer and try again

  • HT204370 I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to restart, it has said "waiting" for over an hour.

I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to complete the download, the "waiting" message has been on the screen for over an hour.  How can I complete the download?

I recommend purchasing lion on a USB drive at Apple Store. This will avoid all of the downloading hassles.
Also, be sure you clone your hard drive first. A lot of people want to go back to Snow Leopard and if you choose to do this cloning will make the process very easy.

  • Restore new iPad Mini from iPad 1 backup. Ican update new apps from Apple store but most of my apps have been showing the Waiting status for over 12 hours. Store shows them as installed. What gives?

Restore new iPad Mini from iPad 1 backup. Ican update new apps from Apple store but most of my apps have been showing the Waiting status for over 12 hours. Store shows them as installed. What gives?

If the downloads are stalled or "waiting" - try these suggestions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.
If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

i have been waiting for over an hour for the iOS8 update (from 6) to complete. something wrong? disconnect or continue waiting

Do a reset hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release.

  • Why can't I download the waiting songs on my iTunes? I have over 2gb storage free

why can't I download the "waiting" songs on my iTunes ? I have 2gb of free storage

I'm guessing because the servers or part of the network is still overloaded by millions of other trying to do the same.
Some seem to think this helped:
Adding Open DNS servers to network preferences (2012) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/17806286
Changing DNS to Google on a wireless device - https://discussions.apple.com/message/17806308

  • How can I get someone to answer the phone? I'm ready to give VERIZON my business. I sat on the phone for over 20 minutes only to be transferred to "Sales." I then sat on the phone for another 15 minutes!!!! I finally hung up.

How can I get someone to answer the phone? I'm ready to give VERIZON my business. I sat on the phone for over 20 minutes only to be transferred to "Sales." I then sat on the phone for another 15 minutes!!!! I finally hung up.

It takes an enormous amount of patience and time to get through to a qualified person.
My Samsung S5 was locked out and needed a factory reset. Including attempts to achieve this locally, it took over an hour before my problem was even addressed.
You may be interested in my journey to a very good technical support person.
First I called the local sales person who had given me his personal business card with the friendly advice to call me with any questions. No answer at about 8:30 am when the business was open. His voice mailbox was full.
Then I called the local store where I had purchased the phone. The person who answered the phone had learned all the proper stock phrases, but was not familiar with the issue, stated that there were no customers in the store, and I should go there in about an hour when there would be more staff. He suggested dialing *411 from my phone (which was locked). Then he gave me a number to call Verizon, which he had to look up, and it took a minute or so. The number was (removed). That is an internal number for employees and contractors and requires a code to access, obviously not designed for customers' use. He finally cut me off by stating that there were a number of customers in line waiting for his attention!
After researching all my papers I found 800-922-0204 on my bill. The automated message suggested a hold time of 5 minutes, it took 20 minutes for a Customer Service Representative to pick up, and then I was referred to technical assistance. The hold time was announced to take 5 minutes, after 12 minutes I finally was connected.
Fortunately I had my computer set up for Skype on a loudspeaker, and was able to do some other paperwork while waiting.
Persistence was rewarded by having the good fortune to be connected to a very experienced, qualified and patient technical support staff with the name of Thomas (removed). He solved my problem, answered my questions during the process of resetting the phone, and gave an example of courteous and kind customer service that I had never experienced before when dealing with any major internet company.

  • How do I take all the bookmarks on my android tablet and sync them with my desktop, if I've had to change my recovery key?

Anciallry to my profile becoming corrupted on Desktop Computer A (windows 7), and a subsequent sync of the corrupt information to Desktop Computer B (OSX 10.6), I'm left with all 1400ish bookmarks residing on Mobile Device C (Android Tablet).
During my attempts to restore, I had firefox services generate a new Recovery Key, prior to my knowing that my bookmarks were stored in "C".
when attempting to sync now, on the desktop, i see:

the android device logs arent as friendly to export, but i see similar complaints about crypto.

It sounds like your desktop profile is (still?) corrupt; it's failing to process the wipe on bookmarks. So let's be super thorough: we'll clean up the desktop, then reconnect so the Android device's data will replace it.
My suggestion is to do the following. Read all of the steps before you start. I recommend that your Android device is on wifi.
    # On your Android device, go to Settings > Accounts & sync. Remove your Sync account. Your Firefox profile will be unchanged.
    # On your desktop, create a new profile.
    # On the new profile, assuming you want to re-use your Sync account, follow the instructions below.
    # Re-pair your Android device with the new desktop profile, and wait for it to finish syncing before syncing the desktop.
Connecting to an existing sync account:
    # Set Up Sync
    # I have an account
    # I don't have the device with me
    # Enter username and password, choose "I have lost my other device"
    # You'll get a dialog with a new recovery key. Choose "Change recovery key".
Let me know if you have any problems!

  • How to fit image to the screen of an Android device?

Required to load the image from the gallery (CameraRoll) and fit to the screen entirely.
Tried a lot of ways - completely unable to fit. Always cut off the edge of the image.

You won't be able to write LabVIEW code that runs on the phone to return the data. What you would need to do is look to see if there is an Android App that can publish the data of the phone's internal sensors over TCP/UDP/bluetooth(?) and you can then write your LabVIEW VI to read that data using an appropriate method (e.g. TCP).
I don't know of such an App - maybe you would have to write one which will be non-trivial. I tried a quick search of "sensor data tcp" and "sensor data" and there are some data loggers etc. for the phone sensors so maybe one of those will point you in the right direction.
There is a little bit of information here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18107148/real-time-wireless-sensor-data-transfer-wifi-or-bluetoot... and here http://onlinepresent.org/proceedings/vol4_2012/50.pdf
