Thinking of getting an iPad but have a few questions

After using the iPhone 4 (3GS previously) and really liking the OS on it, I am thinking of purchasing an iPad to make reading ebooks easier, also, having the iPad would be more convenient for me to quickly go on the net in my home (or other wifi area, but mostly home use) to seek information and also check, send emails, rather than having to switch the computer on all the time and then having to wait for it to load up and also with the iPad, the larger screen would make email, internet use and ebook use more pleasurable due to the iPad's larger screen when compared to using my iPhone.
I have a few questions that I would like to ask to iPad users, who could perhaps answer them for me?
In my household we have 2 iTunes libraries, one for my iPhone and one for my girlfriend's iPod. I created a separate iTunes library for each of the devices so that each one would have a totally separate library and therefore the possibility of having one overwriting the others library would be impossible.
Now ideally I would be wanting to create a separate iTunes library for the iPad, but I would want to add the music and apps, email accounts, bookmarks that I have on my iPhone and add them onto my iPad. Would this possible?
Also. I believe some apps have specific versions for either iPhone or iPad, so would the iPhone versions of the apps run on the iPad, or would I need to download the iPad versions of those particular apps?
Also. I have a number of DVD's that I have converted and then dragged and dropped the video off of them into iTunes. If I am correct, would I need to reconvert those videos/DVD's again, as the video size (screen size) would be for the iPhone and therefore a smaller screen, which would not look very good on the iPad's much larger screen. If this is the case, can anyone recommend a good video converter for converting video for the iPad and what settings need to be used for the iPad?
I also would be wanting to have a number of photos on the iPad. To get them onto the iPad, is it just a simply matter of selecting the pictures I have on my computer that I want added to my iPad, and then just dragging and dropping them into iTunes, then connecting and syncing the iPad to get them added on to the iPad, or is there an easier method?
Thanks in advance

Funny you should mention Macs, but I'm thinking of my next computer been an iMac, and using the Parallel Desktop software so that I can have functionality of been able to switch to Windows when needed to run the programs that are not Mac compatibly. I'm swaying towards Mac has I have heard their OS is more reliable and secure compared to Windows, and the need to have anti virus and anti spyware programs on a Mac is not really needed, but I figure if I can run Windows on a Mac then I have the best of both worlds, anyhow back on to topic
I do indeed take backups of the various libraries and related data for them.
I have used the Dropbox app and was impressed, but I did prefer an app called iFiles which allows me to carry various files/files types around with me on my iPhone, such as PDF files, Word doc files etc.
The reason I use the method of having a separate iTunes library for each device we use on the computer, (my iPhone, girlfriend's iPod, and soon maybe an iPad) is because I accidentally replaced the music I had on an iPod I had at the time with my girlfriend's music. So from then on, that's why I have created a separate library for each Apple device, and so far I have never accidentally messed up another devices contents.
Thanks for the help its much appreciated.

  • Thinking of getting a iPad, BUT

I think I may get the 2nd gen iPad but,I was wondering if there was a way to transfer work back and forth from my Mac to the iPad and iPad to Mac? There is no USB port so it can not be done that way. How are people doing it who own the first gen.

    Yes.
Plug it into your computer and transfer the files through iTunes. Or use DropBox or some other similar app.

Same way they will do it with the 2nd gen.

  • Looking into FCE but have a few questions first

Hi. I currently use iMovie HD (can't stand iMovie 09. I need a timeline) to edit my movies and it works well but I want to move up to a more powerful editor with some more bells and whistles. I think FCE is a good fit but I had some questions before I make the leap.
    1. Is there going to be a new version of FCE soon? I know no one can say 100% but are there signs that Apple is getting ready to release a new version (as in prior release history or other signs of a new version on the horizon?)
    2. Will FCE work well on a Intel 20" iMac with 4 GB or RAM (white model right before the new ones)?
    3. Will the system be able to edit in full HD or does that require more horsepower than I have (the 20" iMac asked above)?
    4. Any problems with the Canon HG-20 camcorder? Is there a better one to consider that may work better/easier with FCE?
That's about it. Thanks for the help.

    nflp,
FCE4 is a very, very powerful app. It's almost Final Cut Pro 6, missing a few features (probably most notable is the three way color corrector. There are only two wheels in FCE4. ANd no native 24p support...)
    1. Even if you were to buy FCE4 today and FCE5 came out tomorrow, you could sell your license to someone else (albeit for a small loss. I sold my license a few weeks ago.). I just got Final Cut Studio (it's a coupla years old), because the owner didn't want it anymore. Someone can always take the license off of your hands and you can just get the newer version. But, the new versions may not be suitable for your needs and computer specs (see how you didn't use iMovie '09?).
    2. I used it with 1.5 GB RAM and it flies on an Intel 20". I worked on FCE4, listening to iTunes, using Safari, and blogging while it renders. Takes me about ten minutes to render per minute of footage, but multitasking while it's not rendering is a piece of cake.
    3. I think you mean HDV...if so, it does fine. I use an HV20 and it's works great.
    4. I haven't used the HG20, but prefer tape (for now). The Easy setup presets make everything a breeze: Format: HD, Use: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, Rate: (all rates) and that's it.
    Hope that helps,
    Scott

  • Want to switch from PC to MAC but have a few questions first.

    Hi
It's time for me to upgrade my old computer and I am seriously considering switching over to a Mac but I have a few compatibility concerns that I would like to address before making my final decision.
I use my PC for business and regularly use Excel, Word and CorelDraw. I have numerous documents that I have created using these programmes. I was wondering firstly if I will have any problems loading CorelDraw onto the Mac and then will I find that I cannot open some of my old documents?
I also have several other programmes that I have downloaded from the internet (for a fee) such as SiteStudio6 and I also have a webpage hosted by Windows Hosting. Will they by usable by the Mac or will I have to download them again for the Mac version (and presumably pay for them again)?
    Many thanks
    Nicole

So if I understand correctly, I can use my Windows CD to load Windows onto the Mac and continue using Corel Draw and Site Studio 6 that way.
It may need to be a retail Windows disc (the type that is sold separately) to do a fresh installation onto a virtual machine. If it's the type that comes with the PC, it often only works on that PC. But yes, that's the way it works. And as I mentioned, VMware Fusion has a feature that imports your current Windows installation from an existing real PC, so if you use that feature, you would not need to reinstall Windows or those apps. I'm not sure if Parallels has that feature. VMware Fusion is $70; Parallels Desktop is $80. Those are retail prices, so look for specials.
I won't have any difficulty with my Word and Excel documents - Mac should be able to open them using one of its programmes. But do I have to purchase the Mac equivalent of MS Office or is it pre-installed?
If you want Microsoft Office, you have to purchase it separately. There are different versions from the +Home and Student+ edition, to the business edition. iWork, which is Apple's office suite, can open typical office documents; you can download a trial version (it may be pre-installed) that is good for 30 days, so you can see if it will work for you. Even the built-in TextEdit app can open basic Word documents. iWork '09 is $79 retail (you can probably find it for less), which is less than any of the Office editions.
I currently use Outlook to receive mail from my Windows Live Mail account. Is the Mac equivalent of Outlook bundled with the machine and can I import Windows Live Mail into it?
Office for Mac includes Entourage, which is Microsoft's Mac equivalent of Outlook, although it is not exactly the same. I don't know how it would work with "Windows Live Mail." The next version of Office for Mac is supposed to have Outlook. The built-in Mac OS X email program is called Mail. It can connect to standard POP or IMAP email services. Again, I don't know enough about "Windows Live Mail" or "Windows Professional Hosting" to know how it would work with it. If it uses Exchange, Snow Leopard has built-in support for Exchange.
It's a big decision as I doubt I will be able to purchase another computer for at least another 5 years or so
You should probably buy AppleCare with the Mac. Then you are protected against failure due to manufacturing defects for a total of three years. You also get phone tech support from Apple for those three years. The standard warranty is for one year, with 90 days of free phone tech support.
And keep in mind that current Macs are Intel PCs. Some say Intel Macs run Windows better that most "real" Windows PCs. At worst, if you cannot find a Mac solution that is acceptable, you can keep using your current Windows solution. And since you seem to be a creative professional, your actual work will be on what is usually the platform of choice for the creative types.

  • HT1296 I get my email on my on my phone and iPad but have to delete on each one. Is there a way to connect this?

I get my email on my iPhone 4 and the new iPad but have to delete on each is there a way to sync this together

This is most likely because you have a POP account rather than an IMAP account. You cannot change unless you set up new account such as Hotmail, Gmail etc. Google POP AND IMAP ACCOUNTS for a bit of background reading

  • I'm thinking of getting an ipad

    Hi
I'm thinking of getting an ipad coz my mac is dying but I don't know if it will do the same job. I have been online trying to find out but can't find a definative answer. I need it to be able to use web design software and word processing. Also will I be able to replace it completely and not need my laptop for syncing. Also I will be needing to print as well.
Does anyone know if I will be able to purchase one or if I need to go back and purchase another laptop.
    Thanks

well..... an ipad is great but if you use your mac for work it won't be great why not trying taking the mac to the apple store you can get an appointment at the genius bar and take your mac and they can tell you if an ipad will replace your mac or not . maybe they can fix your mac easly try it.

  • Have a few questions about iPad before I get one

I have a few questions about getting an ipad before I committ to get one.
I have about 24 gb of itunes purchases in my itunes library, I am thinking of getting the 64 gb ipad. However, after you purchase the 64 gb, it will not truly be 64 gb,
    1) how much actual storage space would I have on a 64 gb ipad accounting for the os? On my macbook now I have a 164 gb hard drive but only access to about 148 gb for example.
    2) Would I be able to store the 24 gb of itunes purchases in icloud? How would I do that? Would I keep needing to go into the Purchase History tab in the ITunes store and download the song when I want to listen to it? My concern with this is that the item will no longer be "available in the Itunes store" and I will lose access to my music I purchased?
I would like to ditch the laptop and just have the ipad as my computer but want to know about these questions I have first.
    3) Can ipad and iphone now be charged without needing a laptop? Per last year's June 2011 conference when Lion and ICloud were announced, it was stated in Fall 2011 with iOS5 that people could get ipads and iphones and charge them without needing a laptop for syncing?

    1. About 57 on mine
    2. Subscribe to iTunes Match at a cost of about $25 per year - 25000 song limit I think
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/
    3. The iPad comes with a power adapter that plugs into a wall socket and that is the recommended way to charge it anyway. - not by using a computer
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html
You do not absolutely need a computer in order to use an iPad but you have to do more research to figure out if it will fit your needs that way.

  • I recently bought an ipad 2 and wanted to use all the apps on my iphone4 on my ipad but have been charged when I use my apple id. What should I have done to share the apps?

I recently bought an ipad 2 and wanted to use all the apps on my iphone4 on my ipad but have been charged for the first app I downloaded when I use the same apple id. What should I have done to share the apps and should I have been charged? 2 months ago when I got a new iphone, i was told in order to get all my apps back as I hadn't backed up my files, if I used the same apple id I would 'purchase' the app, but then would not be charged as apple would recognise that I have already purchased the app. That worked, but when I did the same thing on my ipad 2 using the same apple Id, I was charged... what should I have done and is this right as I thought the whole point of having multiple apple devices was I could share apps between devices. please help! thanks.

Using the same Apple id and Password you should be able to download purchased apps without being charged again.
I download to an iPad/iPad2/iPhone3 & iPhone4 with no problem.

  • I am thinking of buying a iPad but my main desktop machine uses Windows 7 and MS Office.  How easy or difficult is it to transfer data files between the iPad and Windows?  Are there obvious problems or the need for some form of conversion programs?

    David

You don't need conversion programs, iTunes can copy most of your content over to the iPad via the file sharing section, and some apps also support Dropbox, email attachments, transfer via your wifi network. There are a number of apps that you can get that support Microsoft office file (microsoft don't make an app versions of their software) e.g. from Apple there are Pages (word support), Numbers (excel) and Keynote (powerpoint), and from third-parties there are apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice HD

Okay, so we've eliminated the lack of space since you have plenty.
See the screenshot from my Mac here:
Page ins and page outs - post those (or just post the same type of screenshot). If you have a lot of those, that means that your machine needs to keep swapping RAM around to make the best of what is available which can result in slow responses.
Also post the total amount of RAM you have (in my case, I have 12 GB)
You free RAM of 221 MB is very, very low - I'm guessing you only have a total of 2 GB. If that is the case, I would absolutely max out the machine (if you don't know how much RAM you can put in, post your model number here so we can help with that).

  • Have lotus notes on my Ipad , but since a few days I can only see the headers of the mails on the left handside but on the right one where I should actually see the content of the mail , I can only see the header

Have lotus notes (mail) on my Ipad but since a few days I see on the left handside the header of the mails , if I choose one , in only get the header
on the right side but the mail does not open and also I cannot see any attachements? Did compare the settings with my collegues and they are
excactly the same. Would somebody know what could be wrong??

Try closing the Mail app completely and see if the email contents show when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then also try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Can I have two apple id's on the same iPad. Example me and my spouse want to share the iPad but have different id's

iOS does not support multiple users like a desktop OS does.
You can use a web interface to your respective email accounts
to keep things separate; but there is no provision for otherwise
    separating photos, media, etc.
If you wish, you can contact Apple to let them know of your desire:

Then most likely it is not caused by Adobe Reader.
Anyway, perhaps someone has some idea, if you give us some details: operating system, browser, email client, ...

I deleted my duplicate contacts one by one on my iPad but have lost over 600 contacts on my iPad they are all on my iPhone but when I sync my iCloud I only have 200 contact on my iPad but have all 820 on my iPhone can any one help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.
