Thinkpad edge 0578 possibly incomplete recovery disks

My gf said her lenovo is getting slow so I decided to get her an SSD and do a fresh install of win7 on it. She has 3 DVDs created which I believe believe from the lenovo Rescue and recovery software. They are
DVD1) lenovo recovery boot.
DVD2) lenovo recovery data1.
DVD3) lenovo recovery data2.
I swapped in the SSD  and booted with the DVD labeled as "recovery boot" and i enter the lenovo recovery screen with 3 options
1) quick restore (grayed out, cant be selected)
2) full restore
3) rescue files.
I chose full restore and select DVD/CD to locate backup , but it didn't find anything. I subsequently put in DVD2 and DVD3 , it didn't find any backup and prompted for a "final C" DVD. At this point I'm thinking GF didn't create her recovery disk properly. I popped in her original HDD and try to create another recovery disk but it says it can only be done once.
Do you think she's missing a final C disk?
Is there a way to move forward with installing win 7 on her SSD besides recovery DVD from lenovo?
Her laptop model is thinkpad edge 0578 , win 7 home edition. she bought it 2 years ago and it's probably out of warranty.

Hi,
I"m surprised that your recovery media didn't install all the original drivers.  It should have AFAIK.
If your recovery media is old enough to pre-date SP1 _and_ youve installed an advanced format drive (most HDDs are these days) that could explain the windows update problem.
In that case, this KB should help: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Windows-Update-Fails-After-Installing-New-Hard-...
Once you get win update running try again to get ThinkVantage System Update installed.  That should get your drivers updated.

  • Thinkpad W530: Questions about creating recovery disk

    Hi there.
My machine is thinkpad W530. Recently I had several problems with it so, I decided to recovery the system to the factory setting. However, it didn't work when the OS restarted and entered to Rescue and Recvery screen. I did follow the lenovo official instruction but I got a eorror happened, it said "recovery failed" and the recovery process was stucked.
In addition, I tried to create a recovery disk and it failed, too. The lenovo said I could have only one recovery disk but I don't rember I had created a disk before. I checked the doucments in driver Q:\factoryrecovery, I also didn't find the "service done_ini".
Anyone knows pls help me and your assistance is really apprecated.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with OS on ThinkPad W530.
As you have done all the troubleshooting steps to perform system restore and you are not able to complete the process because of error.
This kind of issue occurs when you have done changes in the HDD partition before creating the recovery disc. Hence the system factory restore option will not work.
Since you have mentioned that the recovery media has not created for the machine, the only option is visiting the nearby authorized service center for the further assistance.
Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,

  • Thinkpad T430 Cannot Boot from Recovery disk

    Dear Community,
I recently purchased a Thinkpad T430 with Windows7 Pro edition preinstalled.  I want to replace the installed SSD drive with a larger SSD drive (samsung 840 pro).  I have no files on the laptop yet.  After careful reading of several posts and the Thinkpad manual, I created a recovery medium (boot and data) using the Lenovo installed tools onto a 16GB USB flash drive.  I then removed the lenovo SSD drive and replaced it with the Samsung SSD drive.  I connected the flashdrive to the USB port and attempted to boot from this flash drive.  In the boot menu, both the Samsung drive and the USB drive show up, but if I select the USB drive nothing happens (the boot menu reloads).  After reading more posts, I went into the BIOS menu and tried some suggested changes but nothing seems to work.
I am an ordinary user, I am not an IT professional and embarked on this adventure thinking it should be straightforward enough.
    Can someone help me please?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and welcome,
Was the flash drive properly prepared before creating the recovery image?
New or used USB memory keys or USB flash drives require an active partition created from within Wind...
Sometimes a non-booting flash drive can be fixed by setting the partition active.   Use the instructions in the above link but don't clean, create, or format - or do anything that might corrupt the data.  Just select and set active.
If there's something else wrong with the drive prep (wrong format, for example), you may be able to get it working by doing the prep on a 2nd USB drive and copying the contents of the first drive.
You only get to make the recovery media once so if neither of these work you'll need to call support and request DVDs.  In a case like this where the recovery drive creation has failed they may or may not charge for the media.

  • Factory Recovery Disk

May I know there is a way to create more than one Factory Recovery Disk?
    Below is my current situation:
As soon as I bought my new thinkpad edge, I created Factory Recover Disk and saved it into my external drive ( not into DVD).
Unfortunately, my external drive was crashed. I tried to do Factory Recover Disk but the message showing that we can only have one copy of the Microsoft Windows Operation.
In my unfortunate situation, what should I do?
    Thanks,
    AMT

    Hi,
from the law perspective you can ave only one copy of the OS, that can be crated from our system.
In csae your system is not that old, you can call support and ask for a set of recovery CDs.
Or maybe if you have some other system and the recovery CDs from that one, then you could use those and recover your system
Let me know the options, that you have.
    Cheers

  • Thinkpad R52 Recovery Disks -- HELP!

I recently bought a set of Thinkpad R52 Recovery Disks from "ThinkpadRestore.com," and they sent me an incomplete set!
I have all the disks except "Product Recovery CD #2." They won't answer my emails or their phone or the voice messages I've left them. So I'm dead in the water here. I'm going to have to dispute the purchase through Paypal.
I have tons of work to do, and I can't find any way to get this one CD.
Can anyone help me on this? I've looked on the web and don't see any other alternative suppliers. Could someone possibly help me? Does anyone have this one CD? Dropbox? Something?
Thanks for any help you can suggest.

    Hello and welcome,
There's a fairly recent conversation about that vendor over here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/Is-this-a-legitimate-company/td-p/880009
    Doesn't look too good
I don't know if Lenovo support still has R52 media available.  Give them a call: 1-800-426-7378, 24 hr / 7 days
That's where I'd go first for legit recovery media in the US.

  • Thinkpad edge s230u twist can't access bios by F1,bios recovery

When I tried to update win8.1 updates KB3000850, it failed via auto-update or installation. Follow the Microsoft guide to restart laptop into safe mode, installation failed also. Then I chose safe mode with minimum way to restart laptop. Then laptop halted down at Lenovo logo.
At first, I thought bios is modified by windows8.1(x64) and it can't load any hard disk to boot. With a couple of days test, I found a way to flash BIOS at very beginning of laptop boot. BIOS can be updated. But there is still no startup option to set boot sequence. My laptop is still halted down at Lenovo logo, same as BIOS update. I can only access bios by keeping real clock error which I generated by clearing BIOS.
if no real clock error, i can't access bios. And f1 and f12 doesn't work. At the lonovo logo screen, Enter doesn't work also although it hints me to press Enter.
In my laptop bios, there is no startup option even I udate it.
can somebody help me on this? Lenovo service center just aksed me to change board.
Here I share the bios crisis recovery solution for s230u, may also for other models.
Laptop: ThinkPad edge s230u twist 3347-3QC
    Bios: 1.67, UEFI.
    OS:windows 8.1 x64
How to do BIOS crisi recovery:
    1. Download bios(exe version) from Lenovo website
    2. Run it, and release file. Uncheck the installation at last. Remember the release location. You can get the bios in .fl1 format, mine is in ..\gduj21us\GDETA9WW\
    3. Rename it as BIOS.cap and copy it into a new formatted USB stick with FAT32 in root directory.
    4. Shutdown Laptop and disconnect AC cord. Insert USB stick.
    5. Hold Fn+R, plugging in AC power. And power-on.
    6. USB stick is blinking, then you can release key. A short while, after a lenovo logo, flashing screen shows.
    7. After flash, laptop will restart or shutdown.
In BIOS, it shows new version. If new bios is new one, flashing takes a longer time than a very short time for same version flashing.

I tried 1.02, it will try to read USB stick, then shutdown, restart, read again, laptop would be in this cycle. It's same when i changed one Bit by hex-editor of 1.69 version. I also try to use PhoenixTool 2.59 to rebuild BIOS after change one or two Bits of extracted roms. same status also, it took the changed bios as wrong input, enter the above cycle also.
I tried 1.53, it can show lenovo logo, and flashing screen, but it hints that BIOS should be qual or newer.
I still wait for some on guide. Thanks in advance.

  • Thinkpad Edge E520 Recovery Nightmare

I am having a nightmare trying to get my laptop going again after a hdd failure.
Fortunately I managed to burn the necessary disks from the recovery partition before the hard drive gave up.
However with a new hdd installed and upWindows 7 back on via the recovery disks I have got a limp and useless machine. It appears that the recovery disk doesn't include all the original drivers as the display is using a bog-standard generic driver and some unknown devices show in device manager. My main issue though is Windows Update since reinstall is disabled and I have tried allsorts to get it up and running with no success. I've also tried to update the lenovo toolkit to automatically update the drivers and that will not update either - claiming it needs .Net 4 and .Net 4.5 running to do so. I have tried to install via Microsoft website but .net 4 fails during install and 4.5 wont install without 4. So I cannot update Windows 7 nor the installed Lenovo software. I have tried to manually download drivers from the lenovo site but my Internet is so slow and some of the drivers are so large (200mb+) that most downloads are stalling or timing out before they complete. Any help or ideas please - otherwise its a new laptop purchase for me and it won't be a Lenovo.

  • How to create rescue and recovery partition for my thinkpad edge 11

    Hi,
I'm using thinkpad edge 11 with win 7 home Premium 32 bit.
Before, i tried to restore to factory setting, there is a drive partition of rescue and recovery in my thinkpad.
But, when I was trying to restore to factory setting, I missed the steps and made the drive partition of rescue and recovery formatted.
So, now, I don't have it again in my thinkpad.
Then, after that, appeared another drive partition  in my thinkpad with name S: Sytem, beside C: WIndow7 and D: Data.
So, I need the solution from you all as knowing more about thinkpad edge in this forum.
    1. How I remove the unkwon drive, S: System from my thinkpad?
    2. How I can create again the rescue and recovery partition on my thinkpad(wih Win 7 Home premium 32bit installer inside plus all the drivers)?
    Thanks...

    Hello mate,
To restore the Q: partition you have to use the Lenovo Recovery Discs. Hope you burn them before erasing the partition, otherwise you have to order them from Lenovo.

    Hi,
Can anyone please help me with the system recovery of Thinkpad Edge S430. I just created a recovery DVD and tried to install the windows back to factory settings. But suddenly my PC has formatted all drives, including my recovery drive. Can anyone please help me with the recovery of my laptop? Please.....

IT WORKS!!! I just received my Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter and connected it with a RME Fireface 800 Audiointerface. ASIO Low Latency is perfect and the recording also works flawless!
The Device is recognized as a standard OHCI LSI IEEE 1394-Controller in Windows!
The Pity is I forgot to order a HDMI Adapter for my second screen, which was connected via thunderbolt before.

  • T500 with recovery disks 45M3789: xp pro possible?

I am trying to figure out if I can use this recovery disk to get back XP Pro:
Mfg part #                    FRU part #          Description
    45M3789                       00000000       XPPW7PW7RCVUSE:BOMS,
                                                                     NOT SHIPPABLE ACROS
T500 model  2082-bku originally came with XP but  was upgraded to windows 7 which wiped out hard drive. No backup disks were separately burned from the XP hard drive before the upgrade.
Unit came with this recovery disk but I cannot find any reference to it anywhere. I am reluctant to go thru wiping out hard drive until I have some idea what I will end up with. Anyone have this or know what it does, and specifically if it will get XP somewhere where I can end up using it?  Any help appreciated. (I have to go back and reuse some obsolete software which is incompatable with Win 7.)

    Hi bacall9y,
I'm sorry. The info i found about  Mfg part #45M3789 is more complicated than i expected. It seems to me that this package Mfg part #45M3789 has different CDs.
I suggest you to speak with Sales person as they know much more than me. Maybe you can ask for recovery media as well since you do not create one for yourself when you received the machine.
In the mean time, why don't you try out the windows xp mode in win 7? I understand you would like to run some programs that is not compatible with win 7. I also notice that you have Win 7 Professional version. Perhaps you can check out the Windows XP Mode in Win 7 and the FAQ.  In short, this feature allow you to install and run programs that are only compatible with windows XP while you're in Win 7 environment.
FYI, this Windows XP Mode feature offered by Microsoft only for Win 7 Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate version.

  • Bios protection from infection with virus or bios recovery of Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545

I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545 laptop. Among downloads there are no bios images but only backup cd iso file. Does laptop bios somehow protected from beeing infected with virus when OS installed on laptop is infected? If not, is there a way to recover bios from usb flash? Or is there some other way to recover already infected bios without help of technical support center?

    Dear Wyacheslav1
    Welcome in lenovo community
Actually there is no relationship between the Virus and the BIOS also the BIOS cannot be infected such as the windows . So if you have any debut that your machine has been attacked by a Virus, you can install any antivirus application to scan for this virus and to protect the machine from such attack
    Thanks

  • Windows 7 future re-installation on ThinkPad Edge

I have recently bought a ThinkPad Edge 15 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 pre-installed.  Mindful of potential future hard drive faults, or the OS screwing itself up (I've had both of these over the years), I have
made an image of the drive using the Toolbox, and that image now resides as drive Q
burned a Rescue & Recovery Disk to CD
I found the Product Key ok, under the battery...
    Questions
Will there now be a version of the pre-installed version of Windows 7 on either of these, because having tried to have a look using Explorer, it is not obvious that there is?
The Rescue & Recovery CD has a preboot and a boot folder, but does it have Windows 7 on there?
If not, is there a way to make a copy of the pre-installed Windows 7?

Unless things have changed since I got my T400:
    1.  There should be an image of the machine as delivered in Q already.  As Duck3 said, it is available at boot time using the "Think" button.  (Or whatever it's called on an Edge)
    2. If you only burned an rescue CD, you have only the bootable Rescue and Recovery tool.  There should be an option somewhere - start menu or R&R advanced screen - to make a recovery media set.  That will include the rescue CD again, and probably two DVDs.  It will contain a factory image like  the one in Q.  The optical media guards against total drive failure where you can't boot to R&R on the HD.
[edit] The option to burn a recovery set may also be available by clicking (right click?) on the Q partition in windows explorer.
    3.  See 2.  You can also make backups (as you have I think) of the as-running system.  These can be on external HD or burned to DVDs.  It takes a lot of DVDs...

  • ThinkPad Edge hard drive replacement and OS install

The original drive has failed but managed to copy most users data.
Tried to run image backup but drive is too far gone.
Also tried cloning drive with Acronis boot disk but still fails.
Is there an ISO of the image I can download and burn a factory image restore disk?
I don't want to have to install from a Windows DVD then download all the drivers and software if that is even possible on this model.

    hi antitruster50,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Just to verify,  did you created a usb recovery drive using this method and tried to boot from it? If you did and it doesn't work, check if you see the following in the BIOS and set it accordingly:
    Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled (if applicable)
    Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Disabled / Other OS (if applicable)
Alternatively, you can also do the following:
    1. Booting from the stock 500GB, mount the SSD into the Ideapad S210 using a 2.5" SATA enclosure
    2. After successfully mounting the SSD, use Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home free trial to migrate the OS, drivers, app, etc. from the stock HDD to the SSD (complere guide here). When successful, remove the stock HDD and put the SSD in place and observe (no need to change any settings in the BIOS).
Let me know how it goes.
