ThinkPad External DVD Reader / Writer USB 2.0??

Hi, one of the largest online selling and buying website in New Zealand, trademe, has listed via a buyer a ThinkPad External DVD Reader / Writer USB 2.0. One of my friend bought it and found that it is shown on the computer hard drve as a Philips DVD RAM SDVD 8821 HUSB. The buyer claimed that it is a genuine product bought from IBM shop. I am asking if there is a possibility for that to happen? If it is a fake product of IBM, is my friend liable to buying fake stuff. I think she was duped to think it is a genuine product. I asked this question via the IBM Australia. The respondent told me the model number was "Part Number - 43N3264". I had a search on google and the part number of the leveno external drive is not similar to the one I bought from the online shop. Mine one has got the logo of "thinkpad" on the bottom right hand corner. Whereas the external drive with the part number 43N3264 had the logo of leveno on the bottom left hand side. That's why I need to ask you in this inquiry. Intuitively, I don't think "thinkpad" has manufactured external drive. It has only been used as laptop models. Thanks for your attention.

there are several fake ones on the market, some are well made while others are not.
AFAIK the genuine one don't have a thinkpad logo, but rather a Lenovo logo.

Jin Li

  • External DVD reader/writer?

im looking for a compatible DVD writer/reader with a normal tray (not slot loading). anyone know if a small and light one that would be good? possibly one that can be pwered off of the USB port on the unibody macbook pro alone? or FW800 port?

I'd recommend a Sony model, something like the DRX 840U. I does need it's own power supply however (most do).

  • Install windows 8.1 on windows 7without external DVD-reader? - thinkpad Yoga

    Hi!
Just entered the community as i recently bought a lenovo thinkpad S1 yoga. i am very satisfied with it overall, but right now there is one thing that bothers me. It came preinstalled with windows 7. Now, i did get recovery CDs with windows 8, but i do not currently have an external DVD to make use of them. Now, my first thought was that there must be a way of installing windows 8 without the discs, because of the windows 8 sticker at the bottom of the Unit that basically says it has (had) windows 8 at some point, but i havent yet found a solution.
Would anyone know how to move on from this point? except from bying the external dvd-reader and use the CDs?
    cheers

not 100% but don't believe bootcamp support that or even if windows itself does
thing is that if the usb drivers are loaded later then the bootcamp come into play the bootcamp bootloader can't detect the hd

  • Can I use a USB superdrive DVD reader/writer with a mac pro?

The internal CD/DVD read/writer in my macpro (2 x 2.66 ghz dual-core xeon) broke, so I purchased an external USB superdrive, thinking I could use it as an external drive. It does nothing when plugged into the mac pro, I cant even insert a disk. It seems to not even have power.
Anyway I now see the device (superdrive) is intended for a macbook air or mac mini.
Am I toast? Is there no way I can get this thing to work with the mac pro?
I dont think I can return it, I've already discarded all the packaging.
    Thanks for any advice.

I agree it would not take a lot of time, 2 minutes perhaps for the world record holder, for me more like 10 perhaps, not including the time involved in purchasing the drive, figuring out how to recycle the old broken one that comes out, etc.
However the key point is that if I can get this drive to work, the cost will be $0, as I've already paid for it. So I would be most interested in doing that, if possible. If it's not possible, then I'll have no choice to pay $30 or however much, for a new one.

  • DVD read/writer Question

I'm so sorry if this has been asked, but here I go anyways. I got my iBook G4 as a gift a bit over a year ago, therefore I didn't really have any control over certain situations. My CD drive does not allow me to burn [write] DVDs. I know this is because it was bought without that feature. Is there anyway to send my iBook to Apple and have them replace my drive with a DVD read/writer? How expensive would this be? Would it just be cheaper to buy and external one from LaCie? Thank you so much for any info!

No doubt it would be cheaper to add an External like a Lacie or one from any number of manufactures
You can if you choose have a new CD/DVD Drive and burner installed and there are several different vendors that will do this for you or you can do it your self.

  • Looking for compatible external dvd-r writer

have a late 2009 27" imac, running osx 10.6.8; internal optic drive is not working (have been trying to burn dvd-r of photos/music for siblings), altho can still burn CD's.  have gotten "medium write error."  have repaired permissions on HD.  have tried memorex, staples brand dvd's.  actually purchased a samsung model thru amazon; it crashed my computer.  then i bought a GE lens cleaning disc which screwed up my itunes because it was an "audio" disc.  my most recent decision to buy a "superdrive" was also nixed because my imac (having originally come w/optical reader) is not supported w/superdrive.  i'm resigned to buying an external dvd-r writer/reader but am overwhelmed with all the info out there; i just need one that is compatible w/my imac.  if someone could just tell me which model to buy, i would greatly appreciate it; if you need further info, other than what i've supplied, would be happy to provide.  thanks to all ...

have tried memorex, staples brand dvd's.
Macs are notoriously finicky about the media you use. I only use Verbatim, never an off brand or store brand. So, that may be one problem. The other problem is that the Superdrives are super slim drives installed vertically where the media can shift 1/100th of an inch and cause a problem - in other words, they are not very reliable. I've had two replaced under warranty even though I have used an external DVD burner most of the time for years. I had a LaCie for about 14 years before it malfunctioned and just bought a new one from OWC. It is doing great - I've burned about 10 DVDs so far.

  • External DVD Re-writer.

    Hi (again!) folks,
My iMac doesn't have a Superdrive, so I'm looking to add an external DVD re-writer to my set-up.
Can anyone recommend brands/models which work well with the iMac G5? I know that they're not split into PC ones and Mac ones, but I'd like to know which brands offer the best performance with the iMac before I splash out.
    Cheers.

    Thanks macthew,
In this months MacFormat, they received the new Lacie LightScribe d2 DVD writer. Specs are:
    Read: 40x(CD), 16x(DVD).
    Write: 40x(CD), 8x(DVD), 2.4x(DVD+R DL).
    Rewrite: 24x(CD), 4x(DVD+RW).
It got 3 out of 5, and it's a lovely looking drive.
    For:
    Great Optical Drive
    Dual Layer
    Nice Design
    Against:
    Slow to etch
    Pricey media
    Single colour
Not a great deal in the Pro/Cons to put you off either way, but since DVD writing is new to me, I'd appreciate if you could give me your thoughts on those specs I listed?
The drive retails for £129 which isn't too bad I think.
    Cheers.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

  • Boot Camp - External DVD Reader (Mac Compatible)

    To all,
I am not able to get Boot Camp to load vista from the external CD-ROM since the internal one is totaly disconnected. It does nothing. It spins the CD when it restarts then continues on to loading the login screen.
Bare with me - this is the fun part -
I got a 24" white iMac. CD-ROM was stuck and refused to take in new CD's. Took it to Apple, they replaced it. I bring it back home 2 days later and the screen is dented. They fix that in 4 days. Now I am finally able to start installing Vista.
Put the CD in - nothing happens - it kicks it out!!!! Well - its brand new - its even a different brand than what was in there before.
I take it back to apple, i give the lady all the **** in the world because this is not supposed to happen, etc.
They decide to give me a new iMac. While I am waiting, the manager approaches me and give me the 13 cents which were found in the cd-rom drive (thanks to my kids)
So I appologize - totaly ignored her wanting $450 to replace it, so I went and bought a Sony external DVD reader, burner.
    -- Problem --
Boot Camp, Front Row + the DVD player software won't work off the external drive.
I took the mac appart - disconnected the dvd-drive from the motherboard thinking that if its not there, then boot camp will attempt to run off the external drive.
Put it back together - and rebooted - everything came up fine until using front row or the dvd player.
Boot Camp still won't read the external drive - no errors nothing - it attempts then quits and moves to the login screen.
Guys - I need help - i make my living off Windows so not having access to it - its killing me.
Please do not recommend parallels or anything else like it.
I am willing to try anything at this point. Before I go and spend $450 i will rather buy a new machine.
    HELP!!! Anyone Please!!!!

I doubt there is any way to get the external to work with the Windows install. It's magic that the internal works! However, since you are not afraid to rip the iMac apart, a Google of 'imac internal dvd drive' shows that you can get a replacement for well under $450.

  • I need a DVD reader/writer to connect to my iMac

I need to add a DVD reader/writer to connect to my new iMac.
Any suggestions or good things to know?
    Janice

You can buy cheap optical drives or more expensive ones that may or may not last longer.
I prefer tray loading drives over slot loading drives as the discs don't jam in tray loading drives and the loading mechanisms in slot loading drives can have issues and be problematic.
I would look at various optical drives from the OWC ( macsales.com).

  • Trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3 with external dvd reader

    Hi everyone.
    I have a bit of a question.
I have two macs; one is an iMac, 500mhz running 10.2.8 which I bought used off of Craigslist as a backup computer for whn my home PC finally dies. and the other is an eMac running 10.3.3 (this eMac is use at my photography studio, in a isolated non-internet accessable enviroment).
My PC recently died, and so I took the iMac home to use as my replacement.
I wanted to take the dvds with 10.3 on it and upgrade my iMac at home, because it is still on 10.2.8.
However, the iMac only has a cd-reader tray on it.
So I thought that I could take my external DVD drive, hook it up to the USB on the iMac, and I coudl read the dvds that way, but it won't work at all. The dvds are read, but when the computer auto-reboots it isn't reading the drive until after the computer fully boots up.
Is there any way I can get this to work?
    Thanks everyone

    iMac/eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

    A few issues to consider:
    A. What you are doing is illegal and violates Apple's software license.
    B. You cannot use the special system installers that come with one computer to install OS X on a different model. They usually are special builds intended only for the Mac model with which they came.
    C. You cannot boot the computer from USB device, you need a Firewire device.
    D. Panther generally doesn't take kindly to installing from an external drive, it usually prefers installing from an internal optical drive.
    E. A legal version of Panther comes on CDs. You can purchase it at www.applerescue.com.

  • External dvd reader/burner doesn't show in Finder

Hi and thanks in advance for your help -
I've just purchased an external dvd burner because the pre-super drive dvd reader in my macbook is getting a little tires. It doesn't appear in the finder, but when I check with the System Profiler or Disk Utility application, it is listed there. It's a no-brand dvd burner (from the Fnac chain in France) which appears as a "Slimtype DVD A DS8A3S", am I missing something here?
    Thanks

That was the next question I was going to ask.
If your external DVD player has its own power supply, you should definitely use it. If it came with 2 USB cables, it's in your best interest to use both of them with DVD player. One will be responsible for transferring data from the DVD player to the computer, along with supplying some power. The second cable will provide the rest of the power for the drive

  • External DVD reader

    Hello,
Is there any way that I can boot off an external USB DVD reader? I would like to install Panther on my iMac but it is on a DVD.
    Mike.

No. A tray-loading iMac can't use an USB device as a startup disk.

  • How to install Leopard from an external DVD reader?

    Hi,
I've bought Leopard today. unfortunately, it's not yet installed on my PowerBook. As my SuperDrive is dead, I use now an external DVD (Lacie Portable DVD-RW), but it doesn't work. I can read the Leopard install DVD, but when it reboot, it reboot on my current installation.
I've tried the following during the boot sequence:
    - alt pressed, but I can only see my main HDD
    - c pressed, but I boot on my current installation
Can you tell me if it is possible to install Leopard from an external DVD, and how can I do that ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • No bootable device installing w7 w/ Bootcamp and external DVD reader

    Hello¡ Good night!
Lets see if anyone can help me find a solution since google, youtube and forums cant. (Wanted to call the apple support, but since my mac is from 2010, they want me to pay 19 S)
    I have a MBP 17 inch from mid 2010, with MC OS X 10.6.4.
I installed Windows 7 like 2 or 3 years ago.
Everything was working fine, didnt give a single problem. Installed it easy by doing the partition and then with the original copy of Windows 7 32 bits did it quite easy and fast. (with bootcamp)
I used Windows and mac for all this years.
Last week, I decided I wanted to format my windows partition (since it was full of trash).
I had with me my original copy of windows and the installation of mac drivers (the same cd I used to set the drivers after the first intallation. Its the original, came with the mac).
I deleted the partition from the windows on the Boot Camp assistant, and re did it. And then the nightmare started.
After I prepared the partition from the bootcamp assistant (its the 3.0.1) I select the install windows now. Then the cd dvd from my Mac Book Pro started running but after a while it shut down, pulled out my windows cd and a message on screen saying , insert an original copy of windows and click yes... .. After trying for a while I decided to put in another cd, which was doing the same. Discovery, the cd,dvd from my MBP was broken. I checked up online to see if there was a problem and I discovered that this was not something new. A lot of people was having troubles with their optical drive stopped working out of nowhere and the only solution was changing it. Thing I cant do right now, since just that costs 120 euros...
I readed in some forums that you can use an external CD DVD reader so I bought one for 20 euros (Samsung SE 208A) which works perfectly fine in all the computers, even the MC OS X reads it and I can use it perfectly.
I put my original copy from windows 7 on the CD DVD, and click start windows installation in the Boot Camp Assistant. Which just reboots the computer perfectly.
And when the windows installation is supposed to start I get a message
No Bootable device... Please insert bootable device and press any key.
I tried all the solutions I saw online, nothing worked.
Pressing Option key while startup only opens the MacintoshHD
Pressing Option key with MAC OS X installation CD and then changing it to windows. (Windows cd appears on the bootable device, I select windows and I get back to the same back screen . No bootable device)
Pressing C and selecting Windows (From the CD DVD) and restart.

Thanks for the answer, but I dont have the windows anymore...
._. I have been reading a lot of forums (which is being hard, since everyone seems to have problems and not answers).
We managed to downdload a tool called rEFIT and we are now being abled to select the windows cd, but it's giving still problems. (Changing the list data from boot camp allows it to detect other boot routes) <- starting to feel like a hacker...
    But we are still stucked.
We are trying to update my Boot camp to 3.1 (that seems to solve that problem) but for now it's being impossible, everything in the apple download website are .exe, which are the drivers ONCE you have windows INSTALLED. Clicking to Upgrade Software doesn't upgrade it.. So I'm looking into it...
I'll keep you guys informed if we manage to solve it.
    Thanks for your time!
