Thinkpad s540 wrong resolution

Hi!
The minute i got my hands on this computer I swapped the harddrive to a SSD. By doing so I Iost most of my drivers which i quickly downloaded and reinstalled. But ever since that hdd swap my resolution has been stuck at 1336x768 instead of 1920x1080. I've downloaded and installed graphic drivers from AMD and Intel but nothing seems to work.

I have enabled the "High performance" in the switchable graphics menu, but that doesn't seem to work. I also get this error http://i.imgur.com/nrZEhAo.png sometimes when trying to open catalyst control center which seems weird.
Help would be much appreciated

Anyone running windows in the same laptop can check the same issue of battery drain due to WOl being enabled by default - in the Device Manager under the network cards, opening the settings menu for the ethernet wired card the default for Wake-on-LAN on my computer was set to enabled. This can be changed to disabled, and you may need to also disable the setting for Wake on Magic Packet. Also in the Power Management tab it is possible to uncheck the settings for "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer"
In my laptop these were all set to enabled by default.

  • Thinkpad S540 restarts when i shut down

    Hi
    I have had this laptop for 7 months now, but since about 4 weeks ago when i click on shutdown i realised that it looked like it was shutting down... and 30 seconds later would fire up again.  At first i thought it was me clicking the wrong button, but it has happened daily now.  Only way to shut it down is my removing the power cable and then shutting down.
    Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
    Thank you!

  • Mac mini displays the wrong resolution

    Hi everybody.
    My Mac mini recently began starting up in the wrong resolution (1024x768, instead of the usual 1280x1024.) From my experience with older, 680x0 Macs, I reset the PRAM. This fixed the problem, but I find that I have to do it every time I restart the computer.
    Is there a battery inside the mini that needs to be replaced?
    Thanks.
    Intel mini (1.5GHz Core Solo)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Mr E,
    Try using the Finder to search for files with the name 'windowserver' (no quotes of course. You should find 2 or 3, including one with a string of additional alphanumeic characters. Move all three to the trash and then reboot.
    These are the files that control screen properties, and the system will recreate new ones in the absence of the originals. Startup may produce an erroneous resolution if your screen is not tightly connected and thus not properly recognized, but if so, aside from checking the connections are firm and tight as suggested, you should then be able to set the required resolution and have the system retain it correctly.

  • Thinkpad S540 possible BIOS bug concerning WOL

    I have had a Thinkpad S540 for a few months, and have it installed as dual boot Windows 8.1 and arch linux.  After completely shutting the machine down from linux I found that the battery would be down to around 70% charge after three days unused, and decided to investigate this problem since it was not reasonable for a new battery to lose charge at anything like this rate.
    By chance I came across a piece of information concerning the issue of disabling WOL (Wake on LAN) on the network interface, since I had seen one report that by default WOL is enabled and this requires power to be going to the network interface even when shut down in order to be able to respond to magic packets to start the machine up when it is shut down.
    First I checked the BIOS WOL setting and found it was set to "AC only" by default. So I changed it to disabled. This machine has the latest available BIOS version 1.54.
    However on investigating this after rebooting in linux I found that
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    enabled
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: g
    So WOL was still enabled despite it being set to disabled in the BIOS!
    I learned that I can make sure that in arch linux the WOL setting can be changed to set to disabled after bootup by using a udev rule:
    # cat 70-disable_wol.rules
    ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", KERNEL=="enp3s0", RUN+="/usr/bin/ethtool -s enp3s0 wol d"
    Then rebooting the machine I checked the WOL setting and it really is disabled now:
    # ethtool enp3s0 | grep Wake-on
    Supports Wake-on: pumbg
    Wake-on: d
    # cat /sys/class/net/enp3s0/device/power/wakeup
    disabled
    So I then ensured that the battery was 100% charged and shut down the machine and left it two and a half days - rebooting this morning the battery was still at 100% charge and no longer discharges unnecessarily when the machine is switched off,  so this is a clear indication of a bug in the BIOS for the WOL setting - it is still enabled despite the BIOS saying it is disabled!
    How do I report this to Lenovo so that they can fix the BIOS and release a new one that is working?
    I am aware of other users with different Thinkpads who seem to have the same problem, so this may be more widespread an issue than just on the S540.
    It is also not just an issue with the battery running down when fully shut down but will likely also be a problem for a machine in suspend mode since the network interface may be consuming a watt or so of power when in suspend, which will again run the battery down at an unacceptable rate.
    I cannot imagine any use case where it would be necessary to have WOL enabled on a laptop that is mostly going to be used mobile - so having the default setting to AC only enabled, and having a BIOS bug enabling it when it is explicitely disabled is a serious problem.

    Anyone running windows in the same laptop can check the same issue of battery drain due to WOl being enabled by default - in the Device Manager under the network card, opening the settings menu for the ethernet wired card the default for Wake-on-LAN on my computer was set to enabled.

  • I am stuck on the wrong resolution and have tried everything. Please help.

    My Mac Mini is stuck on the wrong resolution, and I have tried resetting my Mac's PRAM, I tried booting into safe mode, and I tried resetting the SMC, but none fixed the problem.

    Never mind. I should've done this before, but I had to get the Apple Support people to call me. Since none of the other ways to fix the resolution worked. I just had to get to Displays in System Preferences by using the keyboard, and then I had to change the settings using the keyboard as well.

  • ThinkPad S540 AMD GPU PROBLEM!!!!

    Good day! I recently (2 days ago) purchased a brand new S540 laptop. It worked fine, until I discovered a problem with AMD GPU.
    So I have 2 GPUs: Intel HD 4400 and AMD Radeon 8670M. I have the Windows 8 OS. The problem is: any time the laptop is switching to AMD GPU the screen goes black for a fraction of a second, and then I have a notification "driver failure" in windows tray. I installed ALL possible drivers, nothing helped. The AMD GPU doesn't seem to work at all. Moreover, I updated to Windows 8.1 through Windows market, and this caused huge new troubles: when I try to install the GPU driver I have a bsod with a message "thread_stuck_in_driver", something like that, and OS restarts; after restart I can't even see the login window, seems like windows is trying to initialize AMD GPU and I have same blue screen and another restart, only disabling the 8670M video adapter in safe mode helps, but again, exactly until I try to install/enable it again.
    I did a factory reset, restored Windows 8 back. Disabled OS update to ensure that I have a laptop "exactly as designed", and again, same problem.
    I assume this is a hardware problem, am I right? The laptop was in a brand new box with factory stickers.
    Thanks!

    Ok, no response
    Is this thing official, can I hear a feedback from Lenovo support guys?
    I sent the laptop back for diagnostics.
    I'm afraid that seller will tell me to repair the laptop; for free of course, but I'm not happy to pay full price for repaired device. In such case I can ask to reduce the price, but can't find how much the AMD 8670M costs. Maybe someone here can help? In % for ThinkPad S540 - how much would that be? 10%? 20%?
    Thaks!!

  • My web page uses svg images, but when the svg's are printed by Firefox they are rasterized at the wrong resolution.

    I have produced a web page which uses svg images. One of these is here:
    http://donwagner.dk/JZSS5.4.svg.
    The svg's are produced by Adobe Illustrator, version CS5. Viewed in any browser the images look good at any magnification, but when I print the page in Firefox the image is seriously blurred, seemingly because the rasterization uses the wrong resolution.
    The same happens in all browsers, not quite so bad in Chrome but still not perfect.
    Do you have plans to fix this bug, or do you have a workaround?
    Regards
    Don Wagner

    In my experience, print quality settings such as dpi/ppi are hidden in your printer driver settings and not directly available through Firefox's UI. In the print dialog, if you click the Properties button, you hopefully will gain access to this setting. Obviously native web resolution (96ppi) can give disappointing results, so hopefully you can find a place to increase it.

  • Thinkpad S540 : Cannot Disable Microphone for real (even if disabled in BIOS)

    Hi,
    I have an uncommon problem. Usualy people have troubles to get their devices working, mine is working to well...
    I got a wonderful Thinkpad S540, working very well from scratch under the last Ubuntu 14.10
    I went to the BIOS to disable all the devices I don't need like WAN, Bluetooth, camera AND MICROPHONE !
    But this last one doesn't want to leave from my configuration.
    And it is VERY sensitive and powerfull, I've tested it a bit at work, at home and I manage to catch conversation very far away from my place with the microphone with simple software like arecord, example :
    arecord -D default -f cd toto.wav
    next, try :
    vlc toto.wav
    you will be upset by the high quality of the record. I made some test, the entire metal LCD panel is used "as" microphone amplifier. I tried to cover the mutiple holes at the top of the LCD panel, it still works Great...
    The problem is : I would like to switch it off...
    I flashed the last BIOS Revision: 1.63
    I disabled the microphone in the BIOS, I restart 5 times, with and without the AC adaptater, it doesn't change anything...
    Does someone know how to switch microphone off for real ?
    Is it a Bug in the BIOS ?
    Can we have some support contact to get a new working BIOS release ?
    Regard's

    Sorry guys,
    problem sorted, my BIOS supervizer password was different than power on password, always when I was promt to put in password, I was putting there the one for power on and it let me go in BUT when I wen in BIOS, I wasnt able to access settings.
    after I put in right supervisor password everything is working how supose to.

  • Thinkpad S540 and NGFF SSD

    I am planning to buy a S540 the next days.
    If I'm right, the 16GB NGFF SSD option is based on SATAIII and not PCIe.
    May plan was to replace the 500GB HDD with a Samsung SSD, which I use at the moment in my old laptop.
    Now the question.
    Does it make sense from the performance point of view, to buy a larger NGFF SSD for the OS or should I use the classic SSD ?
    Because both are based on Sata-III, I would expect no difference, but maybe I am wrong.
    thanks,
    Markus

    Does your SSD + USB adapter work on other computers?
    When you say it "doesn't find the drive" are you referring to BIOS, Windows Explorer, Disk Management, or ???
    If you can see it in disk management, but not explorer, it probably needs to be initialized (in disk management).
    It could also be a power issue.

  • Apple TV Picture now too big for the 16/9 screen, wrong resolution ?

    Now that I've added a new Samsung Home Theatre system to my new Samsung 46" HDTV, the Apple
    TV picture is displaying way too big, cutting off about 1/2 the picture!?! The resolution seems to be set wrong ( 720 ?). The other inputs DVD and DirectTV display OK. I have the TV set for 16x9. It was working fine before I plugged the AppleTV into the new Home Theatre System. I then tried replugging the AppleTV directly into the TV's other HDMI port but the problem still remains.I can't find any way of readjusting the resolution. Any suggestions ?

    Problem solved. It's a faulty HDMI port on my TV.
    I have been plagued by intermittent random problems with my old Apple TV, especially where there was a blank screen but audio could be heard - solved by a restart. Then today I got the new Apple TV and it displayed as though there was overscan (actually - way more than overscan should cause now that I can see what it SHOULD look like). The final piece of the puzzle was trying to play content purchased previously on iTunes - no HDCP. Finally something pointing to the HDMI connection. I did a bit of troubleshooting - swapping cables, swapping HDMI ports and problem solved. Of the 3 HDMI ports on my TV - when the Apple TV is plugged into port 2 I get this massive overscan and HDCP doesn't work. In ports 1 and 3 it works perfectly. Thankfully the problem with the new Apple TV was consistent enough for me to easily diagnose the problem - unlikely the random nature of the issues I was having with the old Apple TV. Time for a new TV - hurrah! (it's under warranty...)

  • Efi detects wrong resolution - osx crashes while loading loginwindow.app

    Hello,
    I have a strange problem: Sometimes EFI loads OS-X with wrong display resolution which ends into a crash of loginwindow.app.
    Let me explain it in more details: First I had a system with rEFIt. Everything worked like a charm ... until on some day (I think it was EFI Update 1.5.1, but I don't know it exacly) my mbp rev3 sometimes decided to show EFI menue much larger as you would expect it on a 640x480 display. This happens in about 3 of 4 boots. If this happened, OS-X crashed while loading loginwindo.app and Windows crashed before showing the windows loading screen.
    Then after talking with some guys in irc unofficial support I reinstalled everything because they said all my 3rd parity software could be the reason for this error. Now I have a fresh installed leopard and the error still occures - and the error also occures when I boot into leopard disc.
    *To describe the problem in a few words:*
    - EFI detects display resolution wrong in about 3/4 boots
    - loginwindow.app crashes if EFI detected resolution wrong
    - while crashing some strange artefacts are shown on grey apple screen / on verbose mode console, sometimes screen gets orange for about 0.1 sec before artefacts are shown
    *I tried following things to fix the problem:*
    - reset vram: no result
    - verbose mode: does not show anythingnew compared to right boot, after message "loginwindow.app is loading" "login windoe application started" i get some artefacts and the orange screen
    - single user mode: did't find something in logs, but I also didn't find an efi log
    - hardware diagnostics: says everything is right
    - Firmware Restoration CD: does not work because my mac seems to think that everything is right.
    - plug off all external usb devices: no effect
    Now I really don't know what to do, I don't even have an idea where to find this error and what to try next. The mbp is my only computer, so I would find it excellent to solve the problem for myself.
    Thanks for any help what to do

    I'm not sure why you're password is wrong when you type it directly in your station, but I have found something related to remote logging.
    I had always gotten the password wrong when I tried to connect through VNC from my Linux to my Mac. The problem is that for some reason, my keyboard layout is applied twice. I'm using the colemak layout, so if I want to type 'K', I need to click on the key that is marked 'N' in QUWERTY keyboard.
    BUT, through VNC to my mac, if I want to type 'K', I need to type the key that is mapped to 'N' on colemak layout, which is the key marked 'J' in QUWERTY.
    So to type hello, through normal colemak, I would click on hkuu;, but through VNC to the mac, I need to click on hniip.
    Here's the map that can be used to generate the above:
    Qwerty -> Colemak
    k -> e
    n -> k
    j -> n
    e -> f
    h -> h
    u -> l
    ; -> o
    p -> ;
    i -> u
    My solution was to find out how my password should be typed with double-applied colemak, then after log in, change the keyboard layout to QWERTY, and then it is applied only once and I can type in normally. I'm not sure what's the cause of the bug, but at least you have something to try..

  • Media Encoder CC exporting the wrong resolution in custom preset h.264

    I have two custom presets in Media Encoder CC.  The original file is an mov Lossless 720x480 from After Effects.  One is h.264 mp4 720x480 and the other is h.264 640x480.  When I encode the resolutions are 872x480 and 581x480 respectively.  Not sure what I have going on here.  The presets worked with the same settings just fine in Media Encoder CS6 on another computer.  Any ideas?
