ThinkPad T530 - 3 External monitors

Hi, I don't manage to get the third external screen working on my pc. I manage to have two external screen and my laptop screen, however, I want to have all three external screen to work simulatenusly, and the laptop closed in the docking station. Does anyone have a quck fix here please? It makes me mad, it says that T530 supports 3 external screens.... Best regads Pete

Currently running T530 - with Intel HD Graphics 4000 &  nVidia NVS 5400M - with three external monitors and the laptop display. Should have a good tan by the end of winter!
All three external monitors are connected to the dock:
- Monoprice 28" UHD monitor 3840x2160. Currently 30 hz until I can get DisplayPort 1.2 cable. $400 on Black Friday sale. Couldn't resist.
- HP LP 3065 30" QXGA 2560x1600. Old device, connected via USB-powered DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter.
- HP LA 2405 24" 1920x1200 LED. Had to use VGA cable for this one. Image is a bit fuzzy, have to get higher-quality VGA cable
Turns out the Intel video can talk to only the laptop screen and the VGA ports. The Intel couldn't see the other displays, even after I disabled the nVidia video controller.
Also, the nVidia card can only run two monitors at a time, though it can see three (3) ports: the two DisplayPort/DVI connections on the dock, and Mini-DisplayPort on the laptop. No apparent performance difference between the laptop Mini-DP and DP on the dock.
I installed nVidia's latest video driver from their website, not sure whether it was necessary to success.
Hope this helps.

    Hello community
I have installed arch on my T420 integrated HD 3000 and i have the Problem that when i start arch and the boot messages comes i can see the deamon starts ok,ok,ok who should be on the right side but on the NEC they was displayed 5 cm inside. Also when iam on the console and i type dmesg all the output scroll down and broke 5 cm from the roof. And when iam on openbox and i will maximize one window it would be maximized on the size from the Laptop LCD.

    @trilby
i use my Laptop at home 95% and at work 5%
so my first choice would be to have the perfect resolution on my NEC external and when i opened a window it would display there and i dont have to open my Laptop to move the screen to see it on my external or is it so that you must have opened the laptop display to move the windows?
And when i would take it at work it would be perfect if i see it on the laptop with his resolution 1600x900
i hope i explained it well.
    @anoknusa
i change your config to this
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x900 --rotate normal --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
when i start firefox it was displayes well on my external but when i opened xterm or thunar pcman i have to open my laptop and move from it up to the external do i make a mistake?
anoknusa wrote:I stuck that in a script to run when I start X; if the external monitor isn't plugged in, only the laptop display is used.  This sets each screen to act as a seperate display; I can still drag windows between them if I wish, as well as assign windows to open on one screen or the other through DWM's configuration file.  As mentioned earlier, this is also the only way (I think) to get each screen to display at its native resolution.  Note that I specify the resolution for both my T520 LCD and my external monitor, and specify their positions (my external is mounted to the wall above my desk, directly above my laptop); change those as necessary.
what has xrandr to look like for my external monitor and laptop?
and what would the script look like for me?
    external 1920x1200
    T420 1600x900
and thank you for your patience and have a nice day
ps: i know iam very close to find a solution for my problem

  • T530 - 2 external monitors via VGA Splitter

Is it possible to connect 2 external VGA monitors to my T530 via a VGA Splitter? If not; what would I need to make 2 external VGA Monitors possible?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

In which case (and if you want to keep the internal LCD on even with 2 VGA LCD connected).
Cheapest solution: get a usb2vga converter.
More expensive but better responsiveness on large LCD, get a series 3 dock with 2 displayport and get 2 displayport to vga converter (one dp2vga converter and run one LCD from your onboard vga may also work, but never tested it).

  • ThinkPad with 2 external monitors

Moved to ThinkPad T400/T500-series discussion board

    Hi, this is a dejavu
Look at my post a few days back
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-on-dock-doesn-t-recognize-two-external-mo...
Anyway, after a lot of time it seems I figured this out. It helped to reconnect the cables. Try this:
    - your lenovo in dock, both cables attached to dock
    - boot to system
    - set output to "projector"
    - reconnect monitor cables on dock
Somewhat it seems that you have to re-initialize them after install. I was frustared as hell and now they seems working. Hope it stays that way.

  • Thinkpad E540 Dual External Monitors

    Hi,
I'm looking to purchase the Core I7 E540, and see it comes with the Nvidia 740M chipset.
I've found confirmation that the core I5 with intel 4600 graphics supports muliple monitors over both HDMI and VGA simultaneously - giving 3 seperate displays, one on laptop monitor, one on vga, one on hdmi  but cannot find any info if the 740M also supports this.
Can anyone confirm if this is possible on the nvidia 740M aswell?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK we went ahead and bought one of these. Can confirm you can extend your desktop to hdmi and vga simualtanously on the E540 with Nvidia 740M, and still use the build in screen, so can have 3 separate desktops.

  • External monitor not detected on Thinkpad W530 intel-virtual-output

I'm having problems with connecting my ThinkPad W530 to external monitors since a few months. I'm using NVIDIA Optimus and bumblebee/optirun since the VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are only wired to the NVIDIA card om this laptop. For a long time I have executed:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
Then I have started the Screens GUI tool in Gnome to setup the placement of the external screen but now the external screen is not present in the GUI tool and xrandr gives me:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
    LVDS1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm
    1920x1080 60.00*+ 50.00
    1400x1050 59.98
    1280x1024 60.02
    1280x960 60.00
    1024x768 60.00
    800x600 60.32 56.25
    640x480 59.94
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
If I select "Discrete mode" and select startup screen as VGA in the BIOS the BIOS and the Grub screens shows on the external monitor but the screen locks on the screen that shows that the system is booting with the linux-ck kernel. This has never worked for me in Arch Linux so that is no surprise. In Ubuntu everything everything worked fine the last time I tried.
How can I debug this? Why is the external screen not detected any more?

Thanks, I am not sure exactly how to read the logs but I cannot find anything that is obviously wrong
Below is my log with an external screen connected via Mini DisplayPort and after running:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
a few times, no more logs seem to be added when I connect/disconnect the monitor or when I run the above two commands more times.

  • 3 external monitors + built in LCD Problem

    Hi Everyone first the setup:
W540 docked to the ultra docking station
    has the nvidia K1100M card
Monitor 1: VGA to the back of the ultra docking station
Monitor 2: HDMI to the back of the ultra docking station
Monitor 3: DVI to the back of the ultra docking station
When I try to enable the built in LCD it will turn off one of the other monitors. There isn't a specific one just takes away from one of them.
Is there a way to get the Built in LCD to be active with the other three monitors?
All graphics drivers are up to date. Bios is updated and the Docking port Firmware is up to date.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    dont think its possible:
    I asked at bottom here....
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Three-external-monitors-own-LCD-in-W540-with-n...
I found this myself in the W540 manual: "For the ThinkPad Ultra Dock, if you connect two displays to the DisplayPort connector and the DVI
connector, the DVI connector is inactive.
For the ThinkPad Ultra Dock, if you connect two displays to the DisplayPort connector and the HDMI
connector, the HDMI connector is inactive."
Kinda stupid the MiniDock allows it in their older models, but the newer UltraDock doesn't?
I've only been able to get 2 external monitors and the monitor display working.
Might be able to get daisy chaining working to get >3 monitors as I mentioned at bottom of thread, but seems much more expensive (cheapest is that eVGA hub but have to have DisplayPort monitors)

  • T530 - Dual boot not displayed on external monitor when docked

    Hi,
I just got my new T530, loaded all my applications and data from my T61. The T530 is connected to the 4338 docking station.
I have Win 7 on the internal disk, and Win 8 on the ultrabay disk.
Dual boot works fine when undocked, but when docked and the lid is closed I don't see the dual boot selection on the external monitor and the PC boots into Win 7 (which is my default OS).
When cold or warm booting I also don't see the Thinkpad splash screen.
I did not have this problem with my T61 when docked. There the splash screen and dual boot selection was displayed and I was able to select which OS I want to boot into.
Any ideas whet I can do here?
    Thanks

As I came across this it's a matter of the two graphic cards and how they are shared.
The Intel always drives the Laptop-Display and the analogue port, the digitalports at the docking are all driven by the Nvidia Card.
The splashscreen will always be displayed with the intel card and therefore not be visible with the digital ports at the docking.

  • Thinkpad tablet 10 maximum external monitor resolution

    Hi,
The max resolution that I'm getting on the external monitor either using the docking station or the micro HDMI port is 1920x1080. The native resolution for the touch panel is 1920X1200.
    1. Is there any way to get alo least 1920X1200 on the external monitor?
    2. If not, what could be the technical reason if the video card in theory supports even more than 1920X1200.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm afraid that this limit of resolution looks to be by design; the Lenovo spec in the PSREF documents state:
"Intel HD Graphics in processor, supports 1080p video out via micro-HDMI connector, HDCP-compliant"
The Intel Atom chipset used in the TP10 apparently doesn't deal with higher resolutions than this. See:
    https://communities.intel.com/thread/55056?start=0&tstart=0
Baytrail processors from the Core range can go to higher resolutions, but I don't think that this applies to the Atom architecture.

  • Thinkpad T60p with Win XP - Lost color on external monitor (only black & white)

Hi, I have a ThinkPad T60P, and a couple of weeks ago, I lost color on my external monitor (connected by VGA cable)
I have done a lot of testing, and found a couple of strange things around this:
    *  when using docking station with two monitors, only monitor nr "1" inCatalyst Control Center shows colors, but not "2".
    * When using external monitor (or projector) I don't get color
    * When showing video on the external monitor, color works(!) This is only on some type of videos, I think. Flash videos (ie. YouTube does not show colors)
    * When getting a bluescreen, the external monitor displays bluescreen with colors. When rebooting after bluescreen, colors were working while booting (windows logo with colors), but as soon as XP was up, colors were gone(!)
    * I have tried updating to the latest graphics driver (79d533ww.exe), and all the settings in Catalyst Control Center /  Control Panel
As a result of these findings, I beleive it must be a software problem, but since upgrading the drivers didn't work, I don't know what to try next.
I see also that there are other people experiencing the same problems, but I can't find any solution to this problem.

Hope someone can help me here!
    Best regards,

Cats seem to have a strong affinity for that display mode — remarkably often we hear that they've typed in the correct keystroke combo for it, and yet they never seem to set it back to normal after using the computer. Not very considerate, but you know cats: consideration isn't part of the package.

  • Thinkpad T420 with Dock 4338 Dual External Monitors won't work

    Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a T420 with Dock Model 4338 and am trying to connect two external monitors.  I want to have my desktop visible on my primary monitor with laptop closed and that desktop extended onto my second external monitors.  Both external monitors are Dell 19", one is being ran through the VGA port on the dock and the other is a VGA cord that I put a VGA to DVI-D adapter on to run off of one of the DVI Ports on the dock.  I can get my desktop to display on the main external monitor, and everything detects the other monitor fine, but the extended monitor remains black.  The screen is on, and recognized as the button light on the monitor is green not yellow and i can scroll my mouse over to that window and i lose the mouse so it's extending just not visible.  I have made sure that both monitors work by checking each individually in the VGA port and they are operational, but the DVI-D port doesn't seem to work on my second monitor.
I have done some pretty extensive searching and can't seem to get this to work.  At my job I have a T430 with the same dock and dual monitor setup that took no time and works great.  Does the T420 just not support this?
    All help is appreciated.
    Thank you all,
    NickG
    Solved!

DVI-D don't support passive dvi to VGA adapter. You are better off with a displayport to VGA adapter, as they are cheaper then a dvi-d to VGA converter.

  • X240 - Thinkpad Ultra dock Problem with external monitors

I have tried to connect my two external monitors to the dock (the one connected to the vga port) but it was only able to detect one of them (though at a low resolution) and not the other. i have tried using a replicator to connect the screen to the dvi and the usb  ports but nothing seemed to work
Did anyone face the same problem and how were they able to resolve it - any recommendation for a port replicator brand / usb to vga display adapter to use that would work?
    Thanks

Seems that there is no solution now, because DP MST should be implemented in Linux: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72795

  • Problem to work on ThinkPad T430 with Autodesk Revit 2013 models on external monitor

Did anybody from the community experience problem to work with Revit 2013 on external monitor, which hooked up to Lenovo T430 laptop with hybrid (Intel/Nvidia) video card? When I double click on any a model element on external screen this element jumps to unpredictable direction  and I am getting an error message   “can't keep elements joined”. It happened only on external monitor, when I am using the laptop screen nothing happened.
Is there any way to fix this issue? Thanks

have you spoke to Autodesk about this issue?
Try to update the Nvidia video driver to the latest version, and see whether that helps.

  • How to blank laptop screen when using external monitor/

    Hi there
I need some help with figuring out how to configure my xorg.conf for my Arch Linux 64 bit installation on a HP Pavilion dv 5000 laptop so that I can automatically blank my laptop screen when using an external monitor.  I have Arch Linux installed along with Ubuntu Feisty.  In Ubuntu my external monitor (Viewsonic 1912WB) was not detected at the time of installation but with the native 1280X800 resolution that is good for the laptop takes effect for the external monitor automatically when the external monitor is plugged in.  The laptop monitor goes blank when the external monitor is plugged in.
In my Arch Linux installation I have not been able to configure a dual head configuration using the ATI Radeon drivers (fglrx).  I have the native 1280X800 resolution set up for the laptop monitor and this resolution takes effect for the external monitor also.  However the laptop monitor also continues to function when the external monitor is plugged in.  I would like to blank the laptop monitor when using the external monitor.
I am attaching my Arch Linux xorg.conf and the Ubuntu xorg.conf below.  Thanks for anyone who can help, I am having a lot of difficulty in figuring out how to set up xorg.conf among all the things that I have had to learn so far in Linux and I am a relative newcomer to the whole thing. I have tried to compare the two xorg.conf files and edit my Arch xorg.conf in accordance with the Ubuntu one but it did not work and I keep getting errors!
I am using XFCE as my Desktop environment.

Xrandr 1.2 provides means for this. But today the only supported configuration is xorg-server-1.3 + xf86-video-intel-2.0. So for Radeon you'll have to wait for drivers that support Randr 1.2.
On my laptop (Thinkpad x60s) that would be:
    xrandr --output VGA --auto
    xrandr --output LVDS --off

  • Problem with T61 and DVI External Monitor (via Advanced Mini-Dock)

Ever since I upgraded to Vista SP1 on my ThinkPad T61 (with an Intel integrated 965 series graphics card), I've been having problems when I try to use an external monitor via the DVI port in my Advanced Mini-dock.  I'm curious if other people have experienced this problem.
The problems surfaces when I first boot up, or sometimes after my ThinkPad has been running for awhile (particularly when I do something graphics related, such as right-clicking to open display properties).  The picture starts to flicker (or disappear and reappear, like the screen does when changing graphics resolutions).  I also hear the "ba-bum" sound that you hear when disconnecting a piece of hardware, followed by the "bum-ba" reconnection sound - these two sounds happen repeatedly (sometimes as fast as once per second).  If I don't do anything, sometimes I'll get a bluescreen.
Not long ago, I found a fix of sorts: to stop the flickering/reconnecting, I just open Task Manager and stop the process called "igfxpers" (an Intel driver problem).  The problem always disappears after I do this, although I have to remember to do it every time I reboot or else the problem comes back.  So it's not an ideal fix.
This problem doesn't happen when I connect an external monitor using the analog VGA port, or when I'm just using the notebook LCD.  It's limited to just the DVI connection.  I've tried two different digital monitors (one LG, the other BenQ) as well as two DVI cables - the problem is still the same.  So it seems like a driver problem of some sort - unfortunately, the Intel drivers haven't been updated since last February.
I should also note that I've tried reinstalling my OS two or three times, and the problem always comes back.  Has anyone else had this problem, and is a fix on the way?

    Error Message:
Input signal out of range. Translation:
You will see this on an otherwise blank screen. Assuming that the data cable is plugged in correctly, the video card is feeding the monitor a signal stream in excess of what the monitor can accommodate. The two main causes for this are that the user has set either the resolution or the vertical frequency rate too high. For example, you might set a new graphics card to display at 1,280 x 1,024, but if the monitor is only capable of 1,024 x 768 resolution, you’ll get a Sync Out of Range error. This is especially common in 14-inch monitors.
    Solution:
Because you obviously can’t make settings changes from within regular Windows, you’ll need to reboot into Windows Safe Mode. When you restart the system, there is a point during boot up when the system switches from reporting diagnostics and detected components to loading Windows. This point is usually accompanied by a beep and the screen going black. Just before this point, you want to start repeatedly pressing the F8 key. This should bring up a menu of Windows boot options. The one you want to pick is Safe Mode.
From Safe Mode right-click the Desktop and select Properties. Go to the Settings tab and use the slider to drop your resolution a notch or two. Reboot and let Windows try to go into Normal mode. If this still doesn’t work, go back into Safe Mode and get to the Settings tab of Display Properties. Click the Advanced button, go to the Monitor tab, and check your refresh rate. The lowest advisable rate is usually 60Hz, although this works better for LCDs (liquid-crystal displays) than CRTs (cathode ray tubes). Apply the change and reboot.
