ThinkPad Updates Annoying :S

i have several questions about Updates about my machine - ThinkPad Edge 13 - 0196-2zg
1. in the lenovo site downloads drivers link , when i write my type number and operations system choice i see the list of drivers but there are many and also some of the same drivers but old versions dont they delete the older ones ? i was usually checking there to keep updated my machine but when i checked yesterday i realised that some drivers FRU numbers changed and i m not sure if they are for my machine exactly anymore ..

I think we're definitely in the "different strokes for different folks" territory here
If you want the latest drivers, you're stuck with the matrix - or the individual manufacturer's drivers. That's purely up to you. Do keep in mind that when you run TVSU, you get to select which drivers and apps get downloaded and installed. You don't have to accept everything it suggests.
As to trash and crufft, I always run disk cleanup before doing a backup. Get rid of trash, shadow copies, restore points, and everything else I can find. It _may_ also be possible to exclude things from the backup image. I've never tried it in R&R, so that's just a WAG. Certainly other backup tools like Acronis can do that. Acronis also has the advantage of browsable backup images. It can sometimes have trouble saving and restoring a full Lenovo disk image - the service partition bootability can get damaged, but for vanilla Windows installs, it should be fine.
Not sure about EE. Last I read, it only comes w/the original install image. Someone else here will know for sure.
As to ThinkPad themes, I can't help you there either I _do_ know what you mean, though. I liked the old IBM rebus screensaver so much, I extracted the parts and installed it on an Acer laptop.

[Solved]Thinkpad T410: Annoying button problems

On my Thinkpad T410, the light on my keyboard speaker mute button won't turn on, and the light on my mic mute button won't turn off. I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?
EDIT: Upon further investigation, I have also realized that my microphone is stuck on mute
Another Edit: I'm not qiute sure why, but adding acpi_osi=Linux as a kernel parameter, rebooting, removing it, then rebooting again fixed it.

Improvements to mac OS updates interface

Does anyone else find the interface for Mac OS updates annoying? Here are the problems I have.
1. When an update is available I get a notification that I must do something about - even when I do not want to pay attention to updates.
2. The notifications gives me two options that I don't want: install or later. I don't know what the updates are so I don't know if I want to "install" now or not.
Later just kicks this annoying question into the near future.
3. In order to make a decision about the updates I need to open the App store and navigate to "updates". This is a slow operation and always an interruption to my work flow.
I would like to be able to see what the update is directly from the notification and then make a decision as to when to install it. I would like an easy way to kick it into the future - a distance of my choosing.
I just semi-solved my problem by turning off automatic updates. I don't think this is what Apple wants, but automatic updates are just too intrusive.
I hope Apple takes this feedback.

Acrobat reader updates

Adobe should really work on the user-friendliness of those updates!
Those are quite frequent, and every single time
- you have to agree to install the update (annoying popup#1)
- shortcuts are installed on the desktop
- now McAffee is installed...

Thinkpad S540 restarts when i shut down

Hi
I have had this laptop for 7 months now, but since about 4 weeks ago when i click on shutdown i realised that it looked like it was shutting down... and 30 seconds later would fire up again. At first i thought it was me clicking the wrong button, but it has happened daily now. Only way to shut it down is my removing the power cable and then shutting down.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system not shutting down on your ThinkPad S540.
Is the issue persists when you try it with safe mode option?
Have you done any update for your system, may be with Windows update or with ThinkPad update?
Go to BIOS and press F9 to set the BIOS to default option and F10 to save and exit.
Please let us know the status after performing the above troubleshooting steps.

Chinese Word List Update has been updated on July 29, 2013 from version 1.7 to version 1.0. What go wrong?

Yesterday, July 29, 2013, Appfresh app show that Apple has released one more time Chinese Word List Update. the size is 143 KB. But this time, it show itself as version 1.0!
Last update to this Chinese Word List Update is version 1.7 last month. What go wrong? Why apple update Chinese Word List Update from version 1.7 released last month back to version 1.0 on July 29, 2013?
Any friend here can help clarify what happen with Apple.
And this update annoy me many times because there is no way I can control it.

T61 - New NVIDIA driver disabled OpenGL (NVS 140M)

After recently updating my NVIDIA video driver using the ThinkPad update tool, my OpenGL drivers were disabled! Everytime I try to run an OpenGL enabled application, I get the following error message: "nVidia OpenGL Driver: Driver components mis-match. Exit is the only option". I tried reinstalling the drivers (version 7.15.11.7597), using the binary found on the Lenovo website, and rebooting, but it doesn't seem to help. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this issue?

Error 997

For reasons unknown to me, CFMX Server service won't start
(had been auto-starting fine for years). When I attempt to start
it, I get "Error 997: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress."
I've not installed any new programs since the server last worked
fine, and I find no solution from a Google search on this. Can
anyone offer suggestions?

assume you are referring to a command line, but I can't find a path
to jrun.exe. Can you help?
CF server is supposed to start automatically with machine
boot, but doesn't, and I can't start it manually from services.
As far as OS updates, Windows XP performs automatic updates
(annoyingly frequently).
Since I can't start CF, I can't tell you exactly which
version of CFMX I have, but it's older. It shipped with Dreamweaver
MX version 6.0.

Firefox security settings will not save any of my passwords even when i click on the check box for saving passwords. please help.

When a pop-up comes up on the screen it will ask to save my password or not, well, I click on save password but it doesnt save any passwords even when I have the check box checked for remembering my passwords for certain sites it will not save any type of passwords at all. What am I doing wrong? I am using linux-mac OS user.

Simply because I don't think about using this option that takes more time to close... I always close ALL my windows with the X.
Firefox doesn't hang at exit also...
Using Firefox / Exit doesn't always save the bookmarks also... let's say there is 80% chances it will but not always... I noticed the first time I open firefox after booting the computer... Bookmarks won't be saved... But if I close firefox and re-open it, then it might save it... 50% guess...
I tried the safe mode, but since its closing firefox and re-open it... new saved bookmarks sometimes work, sometimes don't... it's pretty unstable...
Hopefully there is a solution to this problem in a near update, annoying... else I will simply reverse to firefox 3.6.16

Save the file on your desktop, UNCHECK "if no extension is provided, use .txt"
Go copy paste this saved file there overwriting the original com.google.keystone.agent.plist located in Harddrive/Library/LaunchAgents/
This is it. No more KSURL.

sudo chmod 700 /Library/LaunchAgents/com.google.keystone.agent.plist
Open the file with Apple+i

T61p has awful static/clipping from left speaker

Hello all,
I just got a T61p (6457MM1) today and love it (well, I love it after I turned off the "Beep" driver that was making the keyboard beep every time I typed "around".)
The only problem with it is that the sound out of the left speaker is, well, crap. It clips, there's a static sort of sound, it generally sounds awful.
I have the latest version of the sound card drivers as listed on the Lenovo site. I have run Windows Update and installed all of those.
I searched the Internet and found some people [http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=261186] who are reporting this same problem and that it occurred due to a BIOS update. Given that this system is brand new (and that I've run through the ThinkPad updater too), I'm confident it has the latest BIOS.
Is Lenovo aware of this/is there something I can do?
The easiest way to hear the problem is to open the Sound Control Panel. click "Configure", then click Test. You can hear that in the test tone, the left speaker sounds substantially worse than the right. This occurs at any volume.
Also, I wanted to set up the password reset service questions, in case I ever forgot my BIOS supervisor password. I set it up in the BIOS, but the help text then says to run the "Create Recovery Media" program from Windows? I ran that program and made the CD, but it didn't ask me to set any questions and if I look in the BIOS again it still says the status of the password reset service is "In Progress".
I wanted to burn a set of recovery discs, but I can't, every time I try I get an error message that says "The files required for creating the rescue media cannot be found," then "An internal error has caused this process to fail." I am talking with my sales rep to try to get a set of recovery discs sent to me since the program to make them isn't working.
Is there some other way to establish the password reset service questions?

I own a T42p since 4 years now and has always been working like a dream, except for a harddisk failure. Since I did create a backup to CD/DVD I was able to restore my Windows XP environment without much trouble. I subsequently updated my laptop with WIN-SP3, updated BIOS etc etc, and updated all Thinkvantage software (e.g. RnR 4.2, Client Solution 8 etc etc).
I also 'updated/repaired' the MBR, based on a Lenovo defect based on the same error, but didn't solve the issue.
Problem: I have not been able to create a new complete CD/DVD backup set. The error message from RnR is "The files required for creating the rescue media cannot be found," then "An internal error has caused this process to fail", as StarmanDX excperienced.
I can continue to create the backup, but I cannot create the corresponding boot disk.

Rescue and Recovery 4 and X31 HPA Restore Your Backups

Good morning!
Installed a new hard drive on my X31. I used a purchased set of official restore media to do a clean install of Windows XP with the HPA Predesktop Area in place.
Two weeks later all of my Windows and ThinkPad updates are complete and I am ready for a clean backup.
I installed Rescue and Recovery 4.23 and after a false start, I successfully made a backup to a USB Hard Drive that will boot into ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. The Windows software seems to be fully functional.
On normal bootup, however, if I use F11 or the Access IBM button, I am taken to the original Predesktop HPA interface -- so the partition is really there. The Factory Restore appears to now be functioning if I ever wanted to use it.
My problem (or questions) relates to the "Restore Your Backups" icon. When I select it, I get the message: "IBM Rapid Restore PC is not installed. Press the enter key to reboot to Windows and install IBM Rapid Restore PC."
Therefore, that portion of the HPA is not accessible.
And, therefore, other than a factory restore, there is no way to run restore from the HPA.
So, here are my questions:
1. Is there anyway to put the Rescue and Recovery 4 predesktop area in this HPA?
2. If so, would it wipe out the Factory Restore option?
3. Should I have made at least one backup with "IBM Rapid Restore PC" before the "Rescue and Recovery 4" installer removed it?
4. Is there any space on the HPA I can recover?
5. Is there a tool or method to delete the "Restore Your Backups" icon if it is non-functional?
This may all seem not that important but I do care about this awesome X31 and I really would like to know how all of these competing technologies interface with each other.

My experience is that if the IBM/Lenovo software supports the X32 (and RNR4 does), then it will work just fine on the X31 (example: Access Connections; exceptions: drivers that are specific to the very few hardware differences like CDC daughter cards -- Bluetooth).
The existing version was uninstalled and it was "way older" than what is covered in those special instructions (thanks, I did check it out -- no directory or utility present).
This is probably the end point for me -- good advice: "If that does not work, and if R&R under Windows works, you might create Recovery media and then boot from that if you want to restore from backups."
So, here is one new idea and one new confusion:
The last "official" RNR that supports the X31 was version 3.1 but it contains this somewhat cryptic (to me) caveat:
Consideration 12
computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed
will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and
Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents.
To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the
Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting
from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.
My thought: Should I uninstall RNR4, install RNR3.1, and then upgrade to RNR4?
My confusion: There are apparently two types of predesktop areas: HPA and Type 12.
Do RNR3 and RNR4 only use Type 12? If so, can it coexist with the HPA, can it replace the HPA on its own, or do RNR3 and RNR4 not install the Type 12 space nor update the HPA if the installer finds an intact HPA?
To recap, what I have now is an HPA as it would have existed in 2004. I have a working RNR4 in Windows. The Access IBM button and F11 boot to the HPA. What I would like is an RNR4 predesktop area that can do a factory restore.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated!

BSOD DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Nexus 4 Wifi Hotspot

My system is a T430s 2352CTO running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
I am currently experiencing a consistent BSOD with error "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" not very long after I wirelessly connect to my WiFi Hotspot from my Google Nexus 4 (LG E960) device. It almost happens immediately after I open a browser whether it may be FireFox or IE, with extremely slow browsing speeds.
I have already uninstalled the old drivers to my Wireless Networking Intel Centrino N-2200 card, and installed the newest drivers from Intel's website. I have also made sure I have all updates from Windows and the Thinkpad update utility.

T60p DVD/RW Driver Corrupt

I've spent the last 2hours looking for a repair driver for my DVDRW:
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4083N ATA Device
Thinkpad T60p / Vista32Business (Model 8743CTO)
I get a "Code 39 - Windows"
Check for solutions didn't help
I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, no luck.
I tried Windows Update & Thinkpad Update - No luck
Any ideas what I should be doing?

please run a check with Pc Doctor or Lenovo Tool Box.
After that please tell Lenovo support line about the result.
They´ll send you a new drive if yours is faulty.

Can FireFox 4.0 automatically sort bookmarks (both existing and when new bookmarks get added)?

I know that a user can right click on a list of bookmarks and select Sort By Name. This is a manual process. I am looking for a way for FireFox to do this for me automatically.
2 separate, but related issues.
Is there a way to have FireFox 4.0 automatically sort:
(1) All of my existing bookmarks?
(2) New bookmarks that get added?
