  • Third Party Repair vs Apple Store Visit (weird situation/question)

I have a 24" intel iMac that recently went kaput. I turned it on last night and it could no longer find any startup volume. It was as if my hard drive just vanished. I tried rebooting, I tried holding the option key and booting, I tried holding c and booting, etc. to no avail. There was just no longer a hard drive. I booted from the install cd and ran disk utility, but there was no volume to repair or reformat/reinstall on, so I finally called Apple. We went through the whole troubleshooting procedure and the rep came to the conclusion that I would have to bring my iMac to the nearest Apple Store or dealer to have the hard drive replaced...
Now, here's where my situation gets a little unique and where my actual question comes in. I live close by to an Apple Store, but I am currently receiving high-dose chemotherapy and it is HIGHLY inadvisable for me to drive, let alone expose myself to mall germs for the next few weeks. I told the Apple rep about my situation and asked about having someone come to my house to repair the computer. He obliged by hooking me up with an approved third-party dealer. They will apparently call me to set up an appointment, come to my home and replace my hard drive. Now, this is great, but I had a question about this which the Apple rep could not answer and I have yet to receive a call from the third-party repair company. My question for the rep was whether or not this third-party repair company would do anything at all to attempt to retrieve the data on the defective drive. The Apple Rep said he did not know what, if anything, they would do to help me retrieve the data currently in limbo. That pretty much stinks because all of my personal info is on there, including tax returns, e-mails, photos and music. I have some backups, but definitely not everything. This is long, sorry....wow...anyway, here is my question for this board:
Would I be better off waiting and just going through the Apple Store for this process? I have AppleCare and my PowerBook, so time is not really an issue; but would they go above and beyond in the effort to retrieve my data? I have no idea what this third party is going to do, but I'll find out eventually; however, if I'm armed with the knowledge that the Apple Store will do everything they can to get my data and this third party ends up sounding wishy washy about it (or worse - they flat out say they won't do anything beyond the repair), I'll just tell them to forget it and wait until I can travel and take my iMac into the Apple Store. This information is vital because the one thing the Apple rep made crystal clear is that there is no way I will be allowed to keep the old drive, which would allow me to attempt data retrieval at my leisure.
Also, this is an additional minor question: the Apple Rep said that the old drives are destroyed when received by Apple, but can anyone here confirm this? Is it 100% assured that these drives are not just given a cursory wipe and then refurbished (if it turns out they can be fixed that is)?
Thanks for listening and any info you can provide.

"but would they go above and beyond in the effort to retrieve my data?"
It has been my understanding from reports here by other users with the experience, that the Apple stores generally charge a fee (I think $75) for transferring hard drive data - it's not part of the service that they're performing. Don't assume that before you leave without your Mac, anyone will even inquire whether or not you still have data on a drive. There have been reports from some users who simply made the assumption that data transfer would be taken care of, only to find it all gone. As for an Apple authorized dealer, I'm not sure why the situation would be any different at all. Best to use caution.

Hi there is no SAP standard process for this. I can give you work around for that.
1.. Receive the repairable product in the warehouse from customer - Normal customer returns or customise a movement type to receive it with our without value as per requirement
    2. Do the inspection in warehouse - Normal inspection
    3. Create a service PO with the vendor.
    4. Send the repairable product to the subcontractor to do the repair - Send using 541 movement type to vendor or use the copy of 541 movement type to send to vendor.(you can refer PO also system does not validate)
    5. Receive the repaired product from the subcontractor - Reversal of 541
    6. Send the repaired part to the customer.
    7. Bill the customer

  • Third party repair shop voided warranty?

    Hello!
My elderly aunt bought a MacBook Pro and experienced a situation where it stopped taking a charge. She took it to a repair shop, and because it was an "Authorized Apple Dealer", she thought it was an Apple store. The gentleman there voided her warranty by opening the laptop and telling her she had moisture damage. When she said she didn't want to pay 1000$ for the repair, the man said " Welp, your warranty is voided now, you have no choice."
Does my aunt have any recourse? Her warranty is still active, and because I informed her that that place was a sham (not a real Apple store), she wants to send it off to Apple.
    What can she do?
Thank you very much for your insight!

She can talk to Apple, but their general policy is that if you or anyone opens the computer or services the computer and is not Apple authorized, then the warranty is void.

  • MBP Damaged by AppleCare Third Party Repair.... Help?

    Hello all,
Ok this has escilated all the way to "Executive Relations". I am really lost as to what to do. Last week I called because my brand new MacPro failed, and fried my MBP 17" (two years old). Long story short, the repair company came to pick up both machines, and then dropped my MBP on the asphalt. (out of the box). Pretty much everything on my MBP has failed now, and Apple refuses to replace it.
I dont want to be liable for any future problems secondary to the damage, and it really hacks me that they are replacing the new MacPro, but the MBP, according to Relations, will be "repaired". How can I take responsibility for the damage to the MBP in the future?? I mean really?
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
In theory, once you had handed it over to the courier company, any damage in transit should be covered by their insurance however, I don't believe this has to be replacement as new. You might find you have some coverage in your domestic insurance policy ...

  • Will apple service my iphone if it was repaired previously by a third party

I have previously had the home button replaced by a third party repairer. This now works fine, but I'm now having problems with the power button and proximity sensor. Every thing else works fine.
Would Apple still agree to service my phone

Apple won't touch it if it's been opened by a 3rd party. Sorry. You'll have to buy a new one or take yours back to a 3rd party repair shop if it needs service again.

  • Third Party replaced Motherboard under warrantee, did a great job. Serial Number issue

IdeaCentre B500 Serial Number is reflected in bios as not matching since the MB changed today. Is that going to cause any issues with future warrantee work (which I don’t expect) and will it effect any other functions such as recovery is needed

No, not a refurbished phone. Brand new in the packaging from Vodafone. I am currently researching the alleged "third party hardware" and believe it is the dock connector that Apple claim they didn't put there. These retail at about £4.99. Believe me, if I had had a third party repair of a £4.99 piece of kit I would just do it again not take it to Apple to try and fix. There is no logic to it. I'm not going to go down the cynical route of the fact that this "intruder discovery" was made whilst the phone was out of my sight being worked on by their repair staff!?!?
I have also discovered there is no one to email at Apple to complain. The only suggestions appear to be phoning or the Genius Bar. Obviously, I've been to the Genius Bar to be told that they won't do anything because of this mysterious intruder in their phone.
Further, I am now in a position where I cannot dispute that the phone has been opened as it now has; by Apple. The staff admitted that before they opened it "it didn't appear to have been opened before" but they stuck by their "we won't do anything" stance upon their discovery.
I've got a photo of the inside of the phone and to my untrained eye everything appears immaculate. None of of the screw heads, numerous of which would have to be removed and replaced for the "intruder" to get in there, are marked in anyway. Can't see why anyone would go to the trouble.
The phone isn't even under warranty so it's not like I'm trying to get a new for old - I just wanted it fixed by the "experts".
Rest assured, I will get to the bottom of this.

  • SAFE thrid party repairs

Some of you may have read my other thread about how my 5g 30gig iPod's headphone jack has been shorted out. I found out that apple charges way to much to fix that. I have been looking at third party repairs that have fairly decent prices, but how do i know they aren't going to just sell my iPod or something? If anyone has gotten their iPod repaired successfully by a third party, please share.
    Thank you,
    Jeremey Thomas

Have sent off a couple of iPods here, plus there are threads here from other people who have used them:

  • Will apple sort my phone out if it has previously been repaired by a third party?

I broke my phone and couldnt afford the £244 costs of apple replacing it, so I paid £90 to get it fixed in a local phone shop. The phone is playing up and I want to just get it sorted but I have been told that apple wont have anything to do with my iPhone now a third party has been invloved... is this true?

Jailbreaking is hacking the device to allow use of software from sources other than the iTunes Store, or access to settings or capabiliites not supported by Apple. That your son said he did nothing doesn't mean that someone didn't, but it wouldn't be an issue with serial or IMEI numbers differing internally to externally.
Apple told us the serial number listed on the IMEI was different from the number listed inside on the phone chassis.  They would not show me, so took it back to the store where it was purchased.  Store says the phone was new when we bought it. Remember watching the sales guy unwrap the plastic from the box......They did nothing for us!
That the box was shrinkwrapped means nothing. When I worked retail we had a shrinkwrap station where we could easily rewrap a box. We never did so to resell a returned or used device as new, but that doesn't hold for other stores. Many do exactly that.
Anyway, it seems that your issue has been solved. Glad you were able to work it out.

    Hello all,
I can't open a PP project without this error message appearing:
"The preset used by one or more sequences in this project requires third-party components that could not be located. These sequences will be modified to use a custom sequence setting instead. To continue editing using the original preset, quit the application without saving the project, reinstall any third-party components that are required and reopen the project".
What I had been doing before this occurred was editing a PP project using ProRes sequences and multi-camera editing. Multi-camera was not working very well and after a few attempts to fix that I gave up and finished the job cutting 3 layers of video instead. AME refused to render the three finished sequences of over 1hr duration so rendered final videos from the PP sequences.
I tried deleting plists for AME, PP and QT, repairing disc permissions and rebooting but there was no improvement.
Client is satisfied for now but will want to come back to this job at a later date so decided to uninstall and re-install AME and PP in the hope both would be ready to work properly when needed again. AME works fine in conjunction with a different PP project but now I can't open the PP project in question without the above error message appearing.
Having searched the net it would seem that the problem may be caused by ProRes but I haven't been able to find a definitive solution for the problem. Does anyone know either:
    1. How to fix this?
    2. If I chose the "modified using a custom sequence setting", can I be sure that my sequences will look the same even if they don't use ProRes? The final deliverable format will be mp4 so as long as the overall look doesn't change then I can  afford a change in the edit codec. It's just that with three sequences over an hour long, I don't want days of work to be ruined.
Other older PP projects of mine open and work fine.
    Premiere Pro CC 8.2.0
    Media Encoder CC 8.2.0.54
    OSX 10.10.2
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Duncan.

Adobe web chat come up with a solution.
    Open the PP project.
Export your sequence or project as a Final Cut Pro XML file.
Set up a new PP project.
Import the Final Cut Pro XML file.
This will get you back up an running.
Since getting back to editing this project I have found that some things will be lost or change in using XML:
You will lose position key framing, black video clips, dissolve fx, audio levels, audio dynamic fx, the ability to open a multi camera clip and change the camera view.
You will keep cut points, crop fx.
Not perfect but only took a couple of hours to save 3 days work.

  • I purchased my iMac using the same (and only) Apple ID I use to purchase apps. Third-party apps update fine, but the apps that came with my iMac (iPhoto, iMovie, etc) bring up a message saying I have to log in with the account I used to purchase them.

I used my only Apple ID to purchase my iMac (Intel-based one).  I've never been able to update core apps that came with it.  I can update third party apps I've bought (like Coda), but when I try to update Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie and so on, a popup message appears saying "You have updates available for other accounts" and "Log in with the account you used to purchase this app in order to update it", or similar (see screenshot above).
The OS seems to get its updates fine - it's just the core apps from the App Store.
I've only ever had one Apple ID, so I have no idea what to do.  I went to ask the Genius bar at my local Apple store, and they couldn't help, and insisted that I must have purchased the iMac using a different account, but I definitely didn't.  There are a few posts on non-Apple forums of this happening to other people, so it must be a rare bug.
I'm a little concerned it may affect my ability to update from Lion to Mountian Lion.  Can anyone help?
    Dan

Have you done a Disk Repair and a Disk Permissions Repair?
If that doesn't resolve the problem I would suggest calling customer support about this issue as it is most likely on their (Apple's) end that the problem exists.

WIndows 8.1 64bit, Windows Installers stalls with any install, updates or third party programs. Third party program installations work if I restart in safe mode. Updates don't as they cannot be installed in safe mode and require normal mode.
Been happening for months now. Some installations after a long time finally proceed, others dont.
Already trying uninstalling antivirus (Bitdefender) with no result.

Could you check this issue under clean boot?
Also try this fix tool it repair corrupted registry keys.

  • Computer won't access or stay registered with third party accounts after new hard drive installed

Had a hard drive crash a a few months ago on iMac. Took it to an Apple-certified repair place, and they installed a new hard drive. (And I think updated the OS as well.)  iMac is working great, but have run into an odd issue with signing into accounts -- such as stores, banks, etc. Each time I try to sign in I need to reregister the computer or in some cases, I simply can't sign into the account at all, despite using the correct user name and password. Tried calling the third party accounts customer support and got "It's a Mac - we don't have anyone who does that." One other place said it "might have something to do with cookies."
Can anyone help out with this one? It is extremely annoying!
    Thanks!!

Thanks. This seems to have worked.
I ran the reinstall and then upgraded back to 10.6.8 via software update, and App Store and iTunes both work now.  I was able to log into my iTunes account and my old purchase of 10.7 was there.  I'm downloading it now as I type this.
I still have to deal with the fact that iLife and iWork and Xcode aren't working (and probably other things too), but the biggest hurdle seems to be crossed.  I'll deal with the other apps tomorrow.
    Thanks again!

  • RED Workflow questions with Mac Pro (including third party plugins)

    Hello all,
I’ve been searching many forums for the better part of a day trying to get some workflow questions sorted. I’m experiencing (very) slow export times, and mediocre playback for a machine that should be screaming fast.
Here is what I’m working with:
    2014 Mac Pro
    -2.7 GHz 12-core intel xeon E5
    -64GB Ram
    -Dual AMD FirePro D700 6GB
    -1TB Flash Storage
Editing all footage off 96TB Raid 6 mini-sas server (getting about 1100mbs read/write rate according to AJA system test) which is faster than any Thunderbolt/TB2 drive array I have.
Media I work with is footage from the RED Epic (normally 5K) as well as DSLR footage from the 5d.
    Software:
    -PrPro CC 2014 (8.1)
    -Magic Bullet Looks 2.5.2
My question(s) pertains to RED post-pro workflow in combination with third party plug-ins and the different approaches to make it more efficient.
Right now, majority of the clients need a 1080p HD master, and they are generally anywhere from 2-8 minutes (usually). So my sequence settings are as follows:
    Video:
    Editing Mode: RED Cinema
    Size: 1920 x 1080
    Audio: 48Hz
    Video Previews
Preview File Format: I-Frame Only MPEG
    Codec: MPEG I-Frame
    1920x1080
    Maximum Bit Depth unchecked
    Maximum Render Quality unchecked
    Composite in Linear Color checked
    Export Settings
    H.264
    1920x1080
    VBR 1 pass
    Target Bitrate 12mbs
    Max bitrate 12mbs
    Maximum render quality/depth/previews unchecked
    Issues I have:
-Playback is fine at 1/2 or even full, but once effects (especially magic bullet looks) start to go on the clips, it’s very choppy and has difficult playback at 1/4
-Export times (especially with magic bullet looks) will take the better part of 1-4 hours for a video that is 3-6 minutes long. This doesn’t seem like it should be the case for a maxed out MacPro
    So my questions are:
Do these seem like the right sequence/export settings for mastering at 1080p? If not, what would you suggest?
Would using offline editing help at all?
Do you place your effects on adjustment layers?
Is there anyway to improve export settings when using an array of filters?
Have you stopped using third party plugins for their inefficiency in unreliability and switched to more integrated applications like SpeedGrade?
Is there any other tweaks that you would suggest for RED workflow with PrPro?
Should I consider switching to FCPX or (besides the iMovie-likeness) does it carry problems of its own?

The biggest issue is that most people have is that updating OS X causes certain folders to be set to Read Only. See this blog post: Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, and later).

It's a nice base system. How about an additional speedy disk for media cache files. You also did not mention which version of OS X you are running.

The Red Giant website does not indicate that this software is yet updated to work with Premiere Pro CC 2014.1 (8.1). Proceed with caution here.

I would not use this plug-in until you get the OK from the manufacturer.

    Again, I suspect your plug-in.
Keep in mind that exports are largely CPU based but you can make sure that GPU acceleration is enabled for AME at the bottom of the Queue panel.

    It's OK.

No need when you should be able to edit natively. Relinking might also be an issue.
    thisisironclad wrote:

That's one way you can do it with the benefit of being more organized.
    thisisironclad wrote:

    I do. Of course, that's a preference.

    Try the following:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write(Hopefully you checked this out already)
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
    Disconnect any third party hardware
If you have a CUDA GPU, ensure that the Mercury Playback Engine is set to CUDA, not OpenCLYou have AMD GPUs.
    Disable App Nap
    Reboot

I really shouldn't answer that question.
    Hope this helps.

  • Third party issue

    hI,
I placed a third party order. The final cusotmer wants to return the material back. I want the material to come back 1st scenario to me. 2nd scenario send it back to the third party vendor. Those which are repairable shall be received back by me. Those that are totally damaged shall go the third party.
Please give me the process how to customize this issue in sap sd.
    Thanks,
    Pintoo.

    Hi,
First of all to track the stock of materials returnd back by customers, you should have a separate Storage Location as "Returns Store"
    Now follow the below procedure to get back the material stock from customer;
    1. VA01 - Create Returns order w/o reference
    2. VL01N - Create Delivery and do PGR (Stock will get received in "Returns" Stock of Customer, view in MMBE)
    3. MIGO - Transfer Posting > Others (Transfer stock of materials from Returns to Un-restricted if to be used by your organization or
Blocked Stock if to be returned to vendor as per requirement)
    Use follwing Movement Types;
453   Transfer posting to own stock from returns from customer OR
459   Stock transfer returns to blocked
    At this stage following A/c Entry will get generated;
    Stock A/c - Dr
    COGS A/c - Cr
    4. VF01 - Create Credit Memo w.r.t. Delivery Document
    A/c Entry generated will be;
    Customer A/c - Cr
    Sales Revenue - Dr
    Now follow the below procedure to return back the material stock to vendor;
    1. ME21N - Create a Returns PO (Activate "Returns" indicator for PO line item)
    2. MIGO - Goods Receipt > Purchase Order (Returns PO) (Here system will hit Mvmt type "161" and you can also select Blocked stock from
where you want to return the stock to vendor)
    Acounting Entry generated will be;
    Stock A/c - Cr
    GR/IR Clearing - Dr
