Third party utilities

I have a new MacBook and would like to protect it with the appropriate utilities. Disk Warrior X has been recommended and reviews indicate that Drive Genius for Mac is worth having. Tech Tool Pro from what I can gather is problematic. Can someone advise me on whether I need both Disk Warrior X and Drive Genius. And how often should I run them? Are they for prevention or strictly reparative once I have a problem?

Hi, babitsm. Welcome to the Discussions and congratulations on your MacBook purchase.
1. Neither DiskWarrior (DW) nor Drive Genius are available as a Universal Binary, and hence won't work with your MacBook. To date, of the apps you cited, only TechTool Pro (TTP) is available as a Universal Binary for Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs.
I do not regard TTP as "problematic" but I have yet to test the new Universal version on an Intel-based Mac. There are both "Gold" (4.5.1) and "Beta" (4.5.2) versions of TTP available: beta software can be problematic as the "beta test" is used to shake out the bugs, with you, the user, playing "Test Pilot." It's important to know the version someone was using if they report it as being "problematic." I would shy away from using the beta version of a disk utility on a production system. For owners of PowerPC-based Macs, I recommend having both DW and TTP.
2. re: Prevention or Repair? Most disk utilities have both monitoring and repair functions. Their disk repair functions are primarily for repair when Disk Utility cannot fix a problem with a volume's directory, and may be their best attributes. The monitoring functions, such as checking the SMART diagnostics, may be of value to you. A reading of the sales literature for each should give you a better picture of what functions are "preventative" in sense of fixing problems before they arise vs. "preventative monitoring" in the sense of alerting you to impending problems so you can then use the utility's repair functions, if needed.
3. As to "when should I run them" this largely depends on you. For example, you can make their testing functions part of a maintenance routine, such as the routine I recommend in my "Maintaining Mac OS X" FAQ. If you enable the monitoring features of the utility, then they are always running to monitor the functions they track, but you'd still use the tools directly when troubleshooting or repairing problems when they arise.
Good luck!

  • Deploying Common-utilities and Third-party Classes

In your documentation you state that several jar-libraries (containing
utilities, third-party classes, jdbc-drivers and also I suppose classes for
custom realms) needs to added to the Java system classpath.
This probably also means that they will not be distributed from the
administration server to the managed servers as applications does. Since
most non-trivial applications include startups, custom realms and so forth
it renders the distribution feature (ie. from admin server to managed
server) virtually useless. Installs needs to be made on all nodes anyway.
One example on a solution for this is to distribute these jar-libraries to
the new node-manager which then starts up the server with these jar-files on
    the classpath?
Also one could include the startup and shutdown-classes in a
weblogic-specific enterprise application deployment-descriptor so that these
are run in the same classloader as the enterprise application. Most
non-trivial startups probably needs to run in this classloader anyway. (If
they for example access ejbs etc.)
An alternative implementation would be to specify a servlet with a
load-on-startup, but I'm not sure at what time the servlet will be loaded.
Is this a recommended strategy for startup-classes that needs to run in the
    application classloader?

  • What are the best third party compression utilities

What are the best (and hopefully free) third party compression utilities that are compatible with FCP7 that I can use to export and compress Quicktime reference movies, instead of using Compressor. My files are always very large and I am looking for an application I can use to customize the size of the final file according to my needs. I would like to do this while skipping the need to go through compressor first as this usually take so many hours to finish.
    Thank you.

Thank you for the response. I didn't know MPEG STREAMCLIP can accept Ref QT files. I have that so I will try to use it in my workflow and see the results.

  • Are third party disk utilities really necessary?

Are third party disk utilities [such as TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior] really necessary on a G5? Does the Apple Disk Utility perform all necessary repair functions?

need a DiskWarrior for sure - buil-in utility is not very powerful for real nasty file corruption.
most important is to back up files regularly to another drive - if drive fails no utility will fix it.

  • Itunes - third party creations/utilities?

is there any third party software to help clean up your music library. I've somehow totally f'ed my up when trying to back up to a usb drive. my lib lost all of my music even though the files were still there. so i replaced the files so now my library is entirely duplicates and even worse the music files that play are the new ones (obviously) and do not have star ratings - no way do i have to redo over 4000 ratings? So those are my two probs - duplicates in general and duplicates with no ratings.
Somebody out there must have written something to let you mess with your itunes music library?

yes, consolidate lib and show duplicates were my first choices for a solution. But it turns out that while they're related to the problem, they cannot address it directly.
i just downloaded the trial of itunify. im guessing that if it doesnt have a fix, nothing will. thankyou for the suggestion. im optimistic that it will serve my needs just fine. cheers

  • How to install third-party SSD as boot disk in MacPro 5,1

I had so much trouble with this that I thought I'd post a recipe that others could follow.
The first thing you should know is that it's not possible to get a non-Apple SSD recognized in a sled slot of a MacPro 5,1.  It just doesn't see them at all, even if (as some suggested) previously partitioned as a GUID partition (which works in a MacBook Pro, but not a MacPro 5,1).  This is true even with the most up-to-date EFI firmware.  You're going to have to use a PCIe adapter card.
The next thing you should know is that not all PCIe SATA3 SSD adapter cards are bootable on a MacPro 5,1.  For instance, even though the Sonnet Tempo SSD is advertised as working for a boot drive in a Mac Pro, it actually works in any Mac Pro *except* the 5,1.  In a 5,1 drives on the card do not work as boot drives, either with option boot or if you select it as the startup drive after booting from something else.  Also, EFI boot is extended by about a minute -- not the end of the world, but an annoyance.  The Tempo card does work well for add-on drives, its very fast.  I am pretty sure the Tempo Pro variant of the card also does not work, as the Sonnet support guys told me that they have to use use rEFIt for booting 5,1 MacPros in their lab.  I imagine if the Pro worked they would have pointed me at that instead.  (Note that rEFIt has been superseded by rEFInd, http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/.  I didn't try using rEFIt or rEFInd because I found a better way, but if you want to dual-boot to Linux those utilities are apparently Da Bomb.)
An Apricorn Velocity x2 Duo card *will* boot, and does not have a long EFI boot delay.  That card is a little more expensive than the Tempo SSD (but not the Tempo Pro SSD) but it works properly.  It's worth the extra money, especially since it's the only card I could find that explicitly claimed to work as a boot drive on a 5,1 MacPro.  And it does.
One caveat: With the Tempo SSD the SSD drives were invisible until repartitioned in GUID format, which also happens if you try to use a third-party SSD inside a Macbook Pro.  I found that I could repartition one drive, a Crucial MX500 960GB, using a run-of-the-mill USB SATA2 adapter.  Unfortunately this solution did not work with a Samsung Evo 1TB drive, I had to use an external USB3 enclosure.  Moreover, the enclosure supported both FireWire and USB3 but FireWire did not work.  This FireWire issue might be due to the super-cheap enclosure I was using, so YMMV, but keep in mind that it's possible that you'll need either a USB3 expansion card in the MacPro, or a different Mac, to perform the initial repartition to GUID format.
It's possible that SSDs would be visible on the Velocity card even before repartitioning, I don't know as both of my drives had been repartitioned prior to trying the Velocity.  So, it might work ... but you might need to partition externally.
I don't know if pre-partitioning is necessary with the Velocity card, as I only ever tried pre-partitioned drives with it.  If you try the Velocity and the drive isn't seen, that's the problem and you'll have to use an external SATA adapter of some sort to repartition before installing on the Velocity card.
After partitioning the drive and installing on the Velocity card, it worked fine.  Yosemite installed properly and with reboot it blazed.
Next up, TRIM support.  For some reason known only to Apple, the Apple AHCI driver refuses to enable TRIM support for anything other than Apple drives.  It's possible that there are or were bugs in some of the early SSDs and Apple is just playing it safe, although I would have preferred to have the option to enable TRIM or not if that's the case.  Unfortunately there is no such option, you have to use a substitute AHCI driver.
Unfortunately if you're using Yosemite you cannot use a substitute driver without disabling kext extensions, because Apple will not sign anyone else's driver (at least not at the time of this writing).  That's unfortunate, I would prefer to have signed extensions if I could, but realistically speaking you're no worse off in terms of security than you were with Mavericks so it's not the end of the world.  With a little luck Apple will either start supporting TRIM on third-party drives or starts signing third-party drivers sometime in the future.
So: Before you can start TRIMming drives, you first need to run this command, or something like it:
    sudo nvram boot-args=“kext-dev-mode=1”
I rather like seeing the boot process, rather than just the Apple logo, so I use this:
    sudo nvram boot-args=“-v kext-dev-mode=1”
I tried both Trim Enabler (http://www.cindori.org/software/trimenabler/) and Chameleon SSD Optimizer (http://chameleon.alessandroboschini.com/).  As of this writing the Chameleon driver is more up-to-date, and comes with some additional utilities that are pretty nice.  Take your pick, though, both worked fine in my experiments.
With a TRIM-enabled AHCI driver, kext signing disabled, a Velocity card, and your favorite SSD you are in business.
The only weird thing after all of this is that non-boot SSDs on the Velocity card (or on the Tempo) are ejectable.  As far as I can determine there’s no way to mark them as non-ejectable.  That’s a minor annoyance compared to the performance you get out of the SSD, though.
Because, with this stuff in there, yowza is the MacPro 5,1 a fast machine.  You Will Like It.  Enjoy!

    Then you should read these.

This was strange but has to do with how startup disk and nvram interact
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1795765
I think your problems were solvable and not that the Sonnet card and 5,1 is not bootable, in fact the 5,1 is easier, there are more supported cards.
I have the 1,1 where the Sonnet Pro is recommended but for data only and are not bootable because of the 32-bit EFI firmware. NOT the 4,1 and 5,1. The 2008's are problem child and have a mix of PCIe 1.1 slots, first implementation of EFI64 that also has problems. Also the 4,1 has two PCIe 2.x slots 3 and 4 that share a controller but that simply limits bandwidth.
I would have left the TRIM support and NVRAM changes in Yosemite to a separate thread if you wanted to focus on the Sonnet Tempo Pro support in Mac Pro 2010-12 5,1s.
Also the make of SSD can vary and they also have their own firmware as do bootable controllers along with the EFI of the Mac, all of which have to work together.  Meaning it might be that Samsung 840 va 840 EVO vs 840 Pro will all be slightly different but my experience is Samsungs work well (as do others like Crucial with the proper firmware - and there was/is an issue with the firmware of the Samsung 840 but not with booting).
The PCIe card gets seen and treated as external and therefore 'eject' but of course you can't when it is the system boot drive.
One thing I found last week and meant to mention:  After installing or changing PCIe cards, RESET SMC made all the difference in the world with the long boot delay. Some PCIe cards will add a few seconds, system has to search the device tree which now shows another controller with multiple devices - and sometimes NVRAM and SMC are what I will call "dirty" and need to be rebuilt and reset.

  • My third party applications keep de-activating. How do I fix this?

    Hi everyone!
I am wondering if anyone can be of help to me. I am desperate.
I upgraded to Mavericks and am currently on version 10.9.5.
I have numerous third party applications...to name the two important ones,
most of them are video effects from New Blue FX and the other ones are just like converters etc.
I have had no problems with them in the beginning when I upgraded to Mavericks and
certainly no problems before Mavericks. Now all of a sudden, every time I try to use
these applications, it keeps saying that I am running on trial version and that I need
to activate the product with the activation code. This has never happened before and
it certainly has not got to do with a certain app as it is happening with all my applications
that require an activation code. I have to keep activating the apps everyday so that I can
use them and it is becoming really annoying and I don't know how to fix this.
I am sure it is something simple as my computer has been absolutely GREAT since
I have updated to Mavericks. Everything has been so much faster and just amazing until
this new problem. This is the only problem I have. I have checked and I have done ALL updates.
I am a video editor and I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and these continuous activations are
really not helpful for me when I am trying to concentrate and use my effects.
But like I said, it cannot be just the effects I use for adobe as applications that
are not associated to adobe at all are being affected as well.
If you guys could help me, it would be greatly appreciated!
I am really desperate! By the way, I am working on an iMac with Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5.
    Thank you so much!
    Jess

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    HI Mike,
If you have third party Document Management System, then you can post two different message, i.e. service order in transaction details of the third party tool with link to document which would be posted to third party Document management server.
If you don't have third party document management system and what to use sap infrastructure, then you don't need to maintain attachment, maintain the link between the third party tool and SAP document repository, with some login utilities.
    Best Regards,
    Pratik Patel.

              2.56 GB          Page-ins
              1.59 GB          Page-outs
    Any Input?  Thanks.

Symptom:  You have a very large number of pageouts for having been up for only 2 days since your last boot.  that averages out to 2 pageouts per minute, and since you most likely are not using your Mac 24/7, you most likely had some very high pageout rates while you were using your Mac.
A high pageout rate generally results in slow performance.
Why you have a high pageout rate is unknown, but you should look for memory hungry apps.  Activity Monitor can help there.
Carbonite can add to your disk contention if it is doing backups while you are using your system.  If it is doing backup during the middle of the night while you are sleeping, that is not an issue.
You could consider either running fewer memory hungry apps concurrently, or adding more RAM to your system (Crucial.com and MacSales.com are highly respected RAM vendors by this and other Mac related forums).
If you suspect 3rd party additions affecting your performance, you could boot in "Safe Mode" which will not load 3rd party stuff during boot and login.  Boot holding the "Shift" key to enter Safe Mode.
You could also run 'sar -g' to monitor your pageout activity over time both in "Safe Mode" and booted normally
    Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    sar -g 60 100
which will report your pageouts once a minute for 100 minutes (adjust the numbers to suit your tastes).  Now use your system as you normally would, and go back and review the sar output when you notice you are experiencing performance issues.  What you really want to see is mostly zeros, with an occasional blip of a few pageouts.  Sustained pageouts or huge runs of high pageout numbers is an indication that you are using more RAM than you have available and should look for why, and if the app you are running really does need lots of RAM, then think about buying more.

  • Moving third-party applications

As an administrator, how do I move a third-party application from the app Utility folder to the main Applications folder?  All I seem to get are copies of the app I want to move.  More than one copy of the app will cause problems when it is time for updates.

    Well, I stand corrected:
    I just tried the following:
    1) drag an application from the Applications folder to the Utilities folder and got this window:
If I hit authenticate, and then enter password, it is moved.
    2) tried to move an app from Utilities to Applications and it was copied (without any dialog).
I deduce from that behavior that this is a new "feature" in Lion. Regardless, I've learned over the years that it is best not to change/mess with the Applications folder. So I would not rearrange apps that have been installed in one or the other. If you have new third party apps you want to install, I would first create a new subfolder (such as "My Applications") and then direct the installer to that location.
And, the question is: how did your third party apps wind up in the Utilities folder in the first place? If you manually installed them there, I'd guess it would be ok to copy it to the other folder and then delete the original - but that is a guess. Try at your own risk.

  • Support for Shared Variables in Third Party XP embedded based TPC's?

I have deployed an application in an XP embedded based Touch Panel (Third party). The application is working fine, but the shared variables hosted on an RT (sbRIO Board) are not getting updated in the application on TPC
    1. The TPC is part of the project as Windows XP Embedded Touch Panel
    2. NI TPC Service has been installed on the TPC and the application can be deployed remotely from the development PC through ethernet. (Hence network connections and communications are OK)
    3. By using Distributed Systems Manager in the development computer, I can see that the shared variables are getting updated on the network
I believe that the problem can be solved if the following programs are installed on the TPC
    A. Support for shared variables for XPembedded
    B. Shared Variable engine
I have tried installing support for shared variables from Program Files > National Instruments > Labview 8.6 > PDA > Utilities > Variables > x86 - but am getting an installation error "Unable to find application manager for Pocket PC applications".
Shared variable engine has been installed from ve220 folder. The program is getting installed. But the Variable Engine is not started Control Panel > Administrative tools > Services in Xpe, the service is stopped and cannot be started. When I try to start the service, I am getting the following error on TPC
"Could not start the National Instruments Variable Engine Service on the local computer.
Error 1053. The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
Please suggest solutions for the above or alternate locations for the following:
    1. Support for shared variables for XP embedded TPC's
    2. Shared Variable engine installer program.
    Thanks
    Krish

    Problem solved!
Update for interested folks working on XP Embedded TPC's
Just to make sure that Shared Variables were indeed accessible to the TPC, I wanted to install Distributed Systems Manager 8.6 on the TPC. However since the TPC was having only 1 GB of DOM (Disk on Memory) and with all the software I had tried, there were only a few Megabytes left on the system. I had to add another DOM of 2 GB.
All the products of the Installation went fine, with the exception of NI Logos (Version 5.0). NI Logos installation failed repeatedly.  I tried installing NI Logos separately, with the same results. Then I had this gut feeling that NI Logos had something to do with the issue.
I then downloaded the new version of NI DSM 2009 SP1. Although this was supposed to get installed on any fresh system without Labview, the installation would not proceed beyond the setup stage. I tried installing NI Logos from the products folder on the new download separately and it worked like magic!
Once the new Logos (Ver 5.5) got installed, the Shared Variable Engine started automatically and the Shared Variables were finally unleashed - free to rise and shine! Thank God Almighty!!
On the lighter side, come to think of it - for running an application of around 400KB, we need XP embedded, NI Run Time, Logos, DSM ..........  (all around 900MB). Can we make it any simpler?!!  Inviting your comments .......
    Thanks

  • How to remove third party application from mAC

how to uninstall or remove custom application from mac yasomite. New to mac   easy and safe way
    thanks in advance

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Third party apps disappear after updates

I have several third party apps installed, including dropbox, windows office 365 suite, and google drive, among others.  When my Macbook Pro updates, those apps are automatically uninstalled.  The icons remain on the bar, but when clicked, produce a gray ? indicating that they are no longer installed.  This has been happening since I have been using this Mac (approximately 16 months).  I am able to reinstall the apps and they function as normal.  This has become a very frustrating aspect of using my Macbook.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
