This computer is not authorized to play this song

This message appears to be bugging hundreds (thousands?) of Mac users when they use DRM protected music from iTunes within iMovie & iDVD - I believe Apple are working on the fix - anyone know when its due?

No clue, as I am sure most people here are in the same boat (since we don't work for Apple). But short term, the work around is to put purchased songs into a playlist in iTunes and burn them out to an Audio CD. Then reimport the songs and you should be able to use the reimported versions without this annoying pop up.
You might want to reimport as AIFF, as I have heard iDVD is a little quicker if it starts with AIFF format, although I can not confirm that and personally have never had issues using MP3s in my projects.

I tried that with one song and it charged me for it.  I've got hundreds of songs my new iMac won't play! Help!
If you purchased the song from the iTunes Store go to your purchase history and re-download it from there. You will not be charged again.

Were these songs purchased using another account?
" I opened a new iTunes account and copied the files to the new account.  "
Do you mean to a new library?
Account is a user neame and password with which you purchase content.
A library is your collection of media.

I just downloaded an album but one song won't play instead a message that "This computer is not authorized" to play the song. The prompt has a log in and when I log in it tells me the computer is already authorized. What gives? Specifically the album is Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes and the song is DMT Song (feat. Thundercat). I purchased the entire album and it even played fine the first listen through.

    Hi,
If you are in a country that permits redownloads, delete track and go to iTunes Store > purchased and redownload. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • I purchased a song on this Mac, an authorized computer. I am now getting a message that this computer is not authorized to play the song. Why??

I purchased a song on this Mac, an authorized computer.  I am now getting a message that this computer is not authorized to play the song. When I provide my username and password to authorize my computer, the song is still not authorized. Why?

iTunes repeatedly prompts to authorize computer to play iTunes Store purchases - http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1389.  If your country permits re-downloads, delete the file and re-download.

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the broken tracks only from your iTunes library, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
If you don't see them straight away it may help to restart iTunes. While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

  • "This computer is not authorized to play" (favorite song)

I opened iTunes and clicked on my favorite song, but I get this error message that the computer is not authorized to play the song.  I've changed my Apple ID and password, but my favorite song won't play.  Other songs on the playlist will play just fine, but my favorite song gets skipped over.
I got the same error message earlier today when I tried to play a movie trailer in the iTunes Store.  I had to shut down my iMac and then switch it on again just to watch the trailer.
    Anybody have any ideas?

I have the same problem! I purchased some music today from the iTunes Store and it skips over one of the songs I downloaded. I deauthorized and authorized my computer and it still gave me the error. Bit fed up with it at the moment!

  • "This computer is not authorized to play this song" How...?

This is the message that was displayed on a friend's computer when trying to play a song. A box then appeared with an email address, asking for the password. What method was this song put onto this computer if the computer is not authorized to play this song, that I assume was purchased from Itunes.

Not sure of your question. If you put songs that you have purchased from itunes on a friend's PC, then you have to authorize that PC in itunes to play them.

  • This computer is not authorized to play "insert song" ....

That message keeps popping up when I try to play songs that I have downloaded from the Itunes store. This has just happened after I downloaded the new versions of Itunes 8.1 or whatever it is called. I have had these tracks on my computer for years, so I imagining it is a problem with the the new software. I haven't try to put the songs on more than five computers. When I go to type in my password to authorize, it rejects it. It says a required Itunes component was not installed -42401. But my program says it is updated when I check. Any suggestions?

Do you have more than one iTunes account or do you/ have you shared your computer with another person who might have an iTunes account? Very early one my wife and I ran into this issue before we realized that it would probably be a good idea for us to use just one account. If you are certain that all the music on your computer is from a single account try deauthorizing your computer and then reauthorizing it.

  • Importing Video Clip: This Computer is not Authorized to Play This Song"

I'm trying to burn a DVD full of favorite segments of video. One is an m4v video file I got legitimately from iTunes music store. It plays fine. When I try to import to iMovie HD, I get the above error message, and it asks if I want to open iTunes to authorize. I tried that once, even though I shouldn't have to do that. It used up another one of my 5 allowed computers, then back in iMovie it gave the same error message and started the process over. I see others had a similar problem with songs and were able to work around the problem by burning to CD and re-importing. I don't know how I would do that with a video file if I can't even get it into iMovie or iDVD.

You have run into DRM protection. The workaround is to burn those tracks to a CD, reimport them into iTunes from that CD, save as AIFF files, and then import them into iMovie.
    Then they will work perfectly.

  • This Computer is not authorized to play "". Would you like to authorize it=

  • "This computer is not authorized to play" any DRM items from iTunes Store

My iTunes 9.0.3 Library has DRM songs (purchased years ago up thru the end of iTunes DRM) plus TV shows (purchased from 2006 thru two days ago).
I just discovered none of these restricted songs or TV shows can be played because ...
*This computer is not authorized to play "name of item". Would you like to authorize it?*
Before I use another authorization for my Mac Pro (on which everything from 2007 on was purchased), I'd like to understand what has gone wrong.

I searched the iTunes forum for help before opening this thread. Thanks, Jolly, for the pointer to the article -- it looked promising, but none of the points apply to my situation.
I did fresh search of all articles, which found the one Jolly recommended. It found a lot of other articles, most/all of which did not include "This computer is not authorized" even though I put that phrase in quotation marks. Article Advanced Search appears to be broken.
