this morning my PB G4 would not get to the password screen after power on. I have rebooted many times and very loud noises (like a HD spinning/rubbing) emits. Tried the Install disk and it cannot find the hard drive. Ran HW test and got a "Mass storage Error Code" message.
Did my HD just crash and unrecoverable? Time to replace my notebook?

I believe your hard drive has failed. Hope you have a backup.

N9A2 Platinum, Installing XP Pro, SP2, Cannot find SATA Hard Drives

I am lost here. I cannot get the bios to recognize the HDs as SATA drives, and XP Pro does not find the HDs (of course), and I do not know why. Do I need a SATA driver floppy for the Install Win drivers <f6> ? I thought not from the other threads here. I am not using Raid.
I have downloaded and read the manual from the support site, Support knowledgebase and every thread that I could find here in this forum.

Ports 5 and 6 ,the red ones ,are for the Promise Extra RAID controller ,which as per BIOS settings was turned off ,thats why the HDD was not detected .You can use that Promise controller with HDD-s ,even if they are not in RAID config ,but drivers are required.

Cannot find my hard drive connected to my extreme

Hi - I am using a Windows 7 PC and cannot find the hard drive connected to my airport extreme. I have gone into manaul set up on the extreme and asked it to share the files which it has confirmed, yet when I go into windows explorer I cannot see the drive at all ...... can I please ask for some assitance?

Just want to be sure of three things first if you don't mind:
Does the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) have a Base Station Name that includes a space? For example: My AirPort Extreme. If it does, rename it so that it does not have any spaces or use the underscore character between words.
Does the shared HDD have a volume name that includes a space? If it does, again, remove them or add underscore characters.
Is the HDD formatted in NTFS? If so, the AEBSn does the best job of sharing HDDs formatted in HFS+, then FAT32. It will NOT work properly with HDDs formatted in NTFS. If the HDD is very high capacity, you may want to borrow a friend's Mac to format it in HFS+ or get a utility that lets your PC format/read/write to HFS+ volumes. Regardless of it being formatted in HFS+, the AEBSn will share it out using both the AFP (for Macs) and SMB (for Windows/Linux) file sharing protocols ... so Windows PC should not have any difficulty accessing it.

The system cannot find my hard drive - is it broken?

I recently updated to OS X 10.4.4 and everything was fine. But today the system froze and I couldn't do anything but press the on/off switch to quit. After that I couldn't boot the system normally. If I start from the System-DVD and open the disk utilities the Hard Drive is not displayed so I cannot check the volume. What can I do?

Hi Berndt, thank you very much for your advice. I think too it's something different and not the HD. After resetting the iBook (vram, pram, pmu etc.) and after a while waiting the system started yesterday without any problem. So I could make a backup. But this morning I had the same phenomenon - frozen Screen (only the cursor worked) and I have to reset everything again. I think I will give it to gravis for an inspection. But I don't want invest too much. A new (bigger) HD would be fine but I don't know what else could be broken and how much the components are. What do you think?
Ronda. I bought my iBook with an OEM Version of diskwarior 2.1.1 which doesn't work with OS-X. I looked at Alsoft but there is no download update available - I have to buy an Upgrade tp Version 3.0 for 39 quid and it takes 3-4 weeks shipment. Do you know an alternative?

This morning, both my Macs would not go on line.

My MBP and iMac would not go on line this morning, the iPhone , iPad and Windows computer all connected to the internet just fine, but not the Macs. I restarted both Macs and the problem was fixed. Does anyone have an idea what happened. The problem was specific to the Macs, and had never happened before.

Disk utility can't find iMac hard drive

I had to power off my iMac by Pressing the power key and holding it several times over the last few weeks. The last time it wouldn't reboot - I'd just get an apple icon. When I tried a safe boot I'd get the icon and it would change to a no entry sign.
Next I started up from the snow leopard installation disk with the intent of repairing the iMac disk. The installation disk worked but when I opened disk utility it only found the installation disk. It didn't find the iMac disk.
Do I need to make a trip to the Apple store or is there something else to try?

Oh Gosh, I am having this same problem too. I normally do not shut down ever, I reboot often because I have to due to bad wireless reception. Last month, I did a full shut down and unplug due to a terrible storm coming in. When I went to boot up, it took very long and I had booted from my external bootable drive. My saving grace is that since crashing my emac in 2006, I am a rabid "backerupper" (made up my own word). I have been using lacie’s Silverkeeper to make bootable back ups just in case. So When I tried disk utility, it did not see my drive. I used my third party software "Disk Warrior" by Alsoft, it saw my drive, and then I unplugged my external and then booted again from the Snow Leopard DVD and was able to repair. All was well until this weekend. We had a storm come trough quickly and we lost power, now I have the same problem you do but this time Disk Warrior does not see the disk either. I am going to dig around for a while before I hit the Genius bar. I fear the drive is fried. And for me I am not certain this will be worth the dollar amount to replace since this is a 2006 and not upgradeable, but I will check with an outside vendor for price for the drive so I know what I want to do if in fact the Genius bar cannot see the drive either. I do hope you have a back up version, and would suggest having third party software to take a chance to see if you can find your disk. My imac is an Intel duo core 2 GHZ and from what I can tell model number A1174. To get help from the smart people here it would be useful for you to post the rest of your specs. If you don't know the exact model, you can check everymac.com and plug in your serial number. Under the computer stand you will find the serial number and the emc number and you can find out from everymac.com what exact model you have. If I find anything I will come back to this thread and report in. Good luck to you.

Time Machine cannot find external hard drive

I have just recently purchased an airport extreme and have enjoyed being able to plug in an external hard drive for time machine. I think I must have reset my laptop while it was backing up because now I get an error every time it tries to back up. The error I get is disc image cannot be accessed (error 2) I have tried everything I can think (reseting router, unplugging and plugging back in the hard drive, changing networks, and then back) but still nothing. I am not even able to enter the time machine to back up to a time before I had this problem. I can however access the contents of the drive just not successfully complete a time machine back up. Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Start by Repairing the sparse bundle that contains your backups, via #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" per #A4 there.
You do need to know that backing-up this way is "iffy" and +*not supported+* by Apple. See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

I understand you’re getting disk not found on boot.
I see you have tested the hard drive and it worked fine. Looking at your motherboard it looks like you have about 6 sata connections total. Have you tried any of the other available connections?
Also if you’re unable to load into bios it sounds like it could be a system board issue.
Try those other connections and let me know if the results change or stay the same.

Error messages when trying to install Microsoft Works 4.0 on my Hard Drive

My internal hard drive crashed (died) with all of my applications (programs) on it. I have successfully installed back all of my applications from the original program disks with the exception of Microsoft Works Vers. 4.0c. Works will not install the original software back on my HD even though I have the original Works program floppy disks. I get the following error messages when I try to run the Installer program on the Works program floppies. 1st error message: Microsoft setup was not completed successfully. 2nd error message: Setup was unable to locate a valid setup table file and cannot proceed without one.
When the crash occurred I had my system folder running OS 9.1 on my other Internal HD so I did not have any startup issues, etc. (thankfully)
I have a gut feeling that because I still have some Works files in my system folder they may be causing the setup program from running properly.
I am hoping someone knows a work around to help me get Works installed back on my HD.

And that message is exactly? I hope you are aware that you are trying to install software from the stoneage and it may simply no longer be compatible...

I am unable to open, uninstall or reinstall firefox. It keeps telling me to close firefox yet it is not open. I have rebooted many times.

Firefox will not open on my pc. When I click on it, the icon runs then nothing further happens. I tried to uninstall it and a popup box tells me to turn off firefox before it will let me uninstall. Likewise if I just try and install. Firefox is not open, I have rebooted, pressed ctrl+alt+delete. This has been going on for 2 days now. I do have gor toolbox but cannot get into the site to disable or update.

You can go to c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ (or whatever your installation is) and create a shortcut for firefox.exe to your start menu or desktop

New ipod, battery low and it makes noise, like a wheel spinning inside

I tried to charge the battery for several hours. then tried to register ipod on computer. did not get past the fromatting screen. then followed directions to reset. it did not work., went back to low battery on screen.
