This operating system had just been installed on my Mac Pro and ever since, it had caused my desktop to take more than 40minutes to start up

The new OS X Yosemite had been causing my desktop problem, it is taking more than 40 minutes to start up the computer and after managing to start it up,it take extra more than that to shut down the computer....why now?.

This is a support forum so you are certain to see people here who have had problems upgrading RAM. However, that shouldn't stop you. You definitely need more RAM. What kind of MacBook do you have? Run Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info. What does it say under Hardware > Model Identifier.
If your machine is MacBook 3,1 or later, you can support 4 GB RAM. If not, you will be limited to 2 GB or 3 GB, depending on the exact model.

I turned my mac off and ever since then it has glitched out and will not download no matter what I do. I have had it for 3 years which is out of warranty. It now has a blank bar under the launch pad and no matter how many times I try re-downloading it or restarting my computer it does not work. I use too play starcraft and other games on this computer although new patched/updates have made it that I can no longer do that now. Really frustrating having to deal with this especially after buying this computer upfront and now out of warranty.

Go to your Applications folder and find a file called "Install OS X Mavericks".  Send it to the trash and delete it.  Then try the download again.

  • Just got the new 2010 Mac Pro and the Mini DVI ports are dead

    Anyone else having this issue?
Anyone know if they need to be "enabled" somehow?

Yes, the adapter does seem to go all the way up to the plastic shell. And the the adapters and displays work fine when driven by either of my MacBook Pros. And there seems to be some sort of connection being made because when the adapter is unplugged, the monitor goes through its typical "I'm unplugged" test mode phases with color screens and so forth, but when I plug it in to the Mac Pro, it goes black.

  • Apple can be justly proud. These Nehalem Mac Pro's are amazing!

    hi Everyone,
    No questions today; just comments.
My Mac Pro, 8-core 2.66/12GB's ram (4x2 + 4x1), Intel X25 M 160GB SSD boot and apps drive plus three 300GB Velociraptors, and ATI's 4870 graphics card, arrived late Tuesday and, while other work needs have pulled me off of working on it full-time, I've managed to get enough time in to get things up and running and I have to say I am more than impressed.
You know how a curve of expectation takes place in us while we wait for some new thing to join our lives? Often, we can be quite on the mark but, in this case, I was way off. This computer is way more than I expected! Apple has more than 'done it again'. The functional design of the structural layout is awesome. So, so clean and clear. Putting the RAM in was pure fun. The way the whole mother board pulls out of the machine... smart design or what eh? The PCIe slots; how they are, where they are, how we add things into them: brilliant! And the hard drive system with it's direct connecting by simply sliding the drive trays all they way in only to be locked in tight when we close up the case with the case side's lever doing double duty with the drives and the panel. Again, brilliant.
And the performance... I've barely touched the surface but I cannot wait to have my first serious day of working in my CAD program.
The machine's very quiet too. Startup brings a rather load fan whirring out of the graphics card but that quickly settles. Adding to this the SSD's silent operation and the Velociraptors' very pleasant hum, tick, tick, tick, tick... the machine is a joy to listen to.
I will be adding a good hard drive controller card and setting up a couple of RAID 0 sets eventually but, for now, everything's just running straight up. And it is great. Added to this already great experience is the LED Cinema Display I purchased along with it. I can't say enough good about this display. It is hugely impressive and, again, has absolutely knocked the socks off of my expectations. The image quality is incredible. I quickly connected and installed my Huey Pro color calibration gizmo and, voila´, superbly brilliant imaging. The monitor makes seeing so, so easy and it delivers a level of virtual three-dimensions unlike any monitor or tv I've ever seen. Huge kudos to Apple. They've done us a great thing here. Can't wait to see what they release when they put out a whole line of these LED monitors. The 24" size is excellent but what other sizes are coming? I'd be thrilled if they put out a 27" model. And what will be the new 'big monitor' size? I imagine not 30"... No point doing that. They need to put out a 33" or so version. And for what prices? Certainly the $1,000 Canadian dollars this 24 cost feels like decent value. I hope they get it together and put decently long connecting cables on them. That's one bug-bear I'm coping with now. I need a 2 meter Mini DisplayPort extension cable but the technology's too new... No one's making extension cables for them yet!
So, while Apple made us wait longer than is more often the case, this release of the new Mac Pro's is extremely satisfying. Congratulations Apple. You've more than done it again!
    Yours in computer wonderland,
    JQ

One, going from a G5 Quad to this pci access is a dream come true. I don't have an earlier intelamac to compare it with so maybe you're right though. Still I don't see any reason why people would have a problem with this on the new machines.
Two, the storage write performance surprised me too but I'm not upset about it, the numbers for both are still very high, and I'm wondering what software and hardware changes in the future might do about that.
Three, I guess machines and sensitivities differ, but my Mac is virtually silent. The only thing I hear is the fans on the video card when I start up and that goes away in seconds. The noisy ATI card reputation is not being lived up to in this case.
After just shelling out thousands for an 08 Mac Pro I can understand your reasons for not spending thousands more on an 09 model. But overall by most tests I've seen the 09's smoke your machine, and I believe they were not just produced for their capabilities now, but for what's coming in the future.
Like me with my Quad though, you'll just have to wait a few years, with me many years, to see the benefits of getting another machine.
To Leslie... Putting blue ray into the new macs would have highly inflated their already very expensive prices. Windows machines can get by with it because they are so cheap, and cheaply made, to begin with. I'm pretty sure the program Toast can make blue ray disks, and there's a plethora of devices to attach to a mac to do so as well.
And don't be so cynical about offsite reviews of products. I've read many scathing articles about products advertised on their websites. And if you've been reading articles about Macs as long as I have, you'd realize that the toughest articles on Macs come from people who are heads over heels Mac devotees.

  • CS6 Camera Raw - I can now only crop using aspect ratio in the custom crop setting rather than being able to set the dims in cm and inches? anyone know how to revert? ever since installing new mac operating system things have been strange!

CS6 Camera Raw - I can now only crop using aspect ratio in the custom crop setting rather than being able to set the dims in cm and inches? anyone know how to revert? ever since installing new mac operating system things have been strange!

    Hi Kglad.
I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)
here is the new tutorial for CC -  my guess is they have scrapped the control we had over the custom crop settings

I am running OS 10.5.8 on an iMac. There is no security update issued for this operating system - it only covers 10.6. Is my comuter vulnerable? Do I need to do anything?

I'm still not clear why Apple only issued security updates for 10.6 and later. I assume they think we should all update our operating systems or maybe they are just focusing on the majority of users?
Apple has had a long standing policy of only supporting the current and previous operating system releases.  Whether they decide to make an exception for even older releases is anyone's guess.
You can send them feedback to express your opinion.
Or does the new Trojan not affect older OS? I'd like to know , if anyone has information.
As far as is known, it does affect older unsupported releases.  Disabling Java in your web browser is the current preventive approach (and that is a community derived approach)

I need to reinstall my operating system for 10.5 after seeing a file folder and question mark flashing on my start up screen. Can anyone help me with this?

    Hello,
That means it can find the Hard Drive, or can't find the things needed for booting.
See if DU even sees it.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
