Thousands of Duplicate items in iTunes

I have duplicate items in itunes library that were transferred over from external harddrive. Is there a formula that I could use to delete them?

I have that add-on installed and have none of your issues. What Thunderbird version?

The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

THOUSANDS of duplicate songs in iTunes. How do I get rid of all the doubles

With the iTunes update I hit the organize my library button and this caused iTunes to find the same songs in several different folders, so that now I have thousands of songs in iTunes with doubles, triples and quadruple copies. Is there a program or setting which will allow me to consolidate my library down to the single original copies of each song. I normally have like 12 gb of music but now I have 27 gb with all the doubles. Hope someone can help.

When you are editing the songs - are you just chopping to top and bottom off? using the start and finish options?
If you do, it might be that for some reason iTunes is forgetting the settings.
You could always create an mp3 copy within iTunes and delete the other.

Apple removed that feature along with several others in the first release of iTunes 11 but returned it in iTunes 11.0.1 (today). Update with Software Update.

I now have iTunes ver 11.0.4.4 under Windows 7. I lost all iTunes stuff when updating to Windows 7. I have loaded thousands amd thousands of music files from backup disks, but there are many duplicates. I am attemping to re-establish my old library. How do I delete the duplicate items in my library on the new iTunes?

I just backed up my library on a new external hard drive and noticed that all my media is doubled up. Aside from going through each item is there a way to do this on the latest version of itunes. There use to be a way via the file and clicking on duplicates items....Please help I have over 20000+ items!!!

Until then you will have to resort to sorting by a particular label such as artist and manually scanning, third party utilities such as Dougscripts Dupin to deal with duplicates, or revert back to iTunes 10.7.
Somewhere you're not doing something correctly. Backing up a library should not produce duplicates. There's no way it can.

I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to find and remove duplicate items under the New iTunes 11? Its not as user friendly as in previous versions. Does anyone know how to figure this out?

ITunes won't let me select show duplicate items on my iPhone 4s.

I can see the option but it is in faded font color and I cannot select it. Pressing shift, or alt, or control does nothing to remedy the problem.
I'm using an iPhone 4S, under the most current iOS (7.1)

I wish to remove duplicate songs from the music selection on my iPhone. While in iTunes, I select the iPhone and go to "On This Phone". From there I go to "View>Show Duplicate Items". But the option is hollow-texted, as in:

Show Sidebar
Show Duplicate Items
Video Playback
Show Visualizer
When I click on Show Visualizer, nothing happens. I need help to remedy this situation. I posted the topic in the iPhone section, as I don't care about duplicate songs in my iTunes, just the phone itself.

I recently purchased a new window9.1 computer. I tried to move the library to the new pc by using an external haddrive. The songs and other items all transfered, but the mudic remsined on the externalmedia informaiton files, I had to connect the drive to listen to music.. I worked with tech support and copied themusioc files to ITunes. When I reopened the media files and copied music were on the system. ITunes recognzed there was missing information on the media data file and corrected it, so oe I have 20,000 sonfs in a 10,000 song library.How do you delete massive duplicates without individually deleting10,000 songs?

How to remove duplicate songs from Itunes

I've consolidates my music in Itunes 11.01. Playlists are just getting crazy with duplicates.
I want to eliminate duplicate music files, as well as eliminate the references in the interface.
Then sync my new IPad.
When I manually erase a duplicate in Windows Explorer, I'm left with a "!" indication in Itunes that the file cannot be found... duh.
I want to find either an easier way to eliminate duplicates without Windows Explorer, or
a way to select all the "!" references in Itunes interface and delete.
Help please from a completely organized person who hates Apples "intelligence" at thinking it knows what I want, and not providing
adequate help under "remove duplicates" in its help index.

I would do it manually. As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes. It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

and it was never answered so I figured I'd make a new thread to try and get some help. I have the same problem in that when I extracted the backup files from my external hdd on my new macbook it created 3-5 duplicates of all my songs. So like the quote above I have 3-5 duplicates of ALL songs from EACH separate artist.
Is it possible to somehow purge all of these duplicates at once, on a macroscopic level? It would take forever to modify individually, as I now have over 27,000 files (originally around 5,500 songs).
