Thumbnails on Import Window

You know how, when you import images from your camera (Rebel XTi), thumbnail previews of those images show up on the import window?
Well... I'm not sure what happened, but they don't show up anymore. I don't know if it's a software problem or if it's my camera. Or is it because I'm using Aperture on a MacBook...?
Anyone know how to fix this?
- Thanks.

Firstly, I don't think the issue is a corrupt plist, but it's any easy thing to check.
plists hold the application's user preferences and can be trashed with impunity, provided you know the settings (you'll have to reapply your preferences).
Why plists get corrupt is beyond me, that they do is factual and seemingly more common that we would expect.
If the plist is missing, Aperture will create a brand new default one. So...
Make a note of your preferences in Aperture.
Quit Aperture.
In Finder, go to user/Library/Preferences/ and delete com.apple.Aperture.plist
In Finder, go to your Aperture Library (usually in Pictures folder).
Double-click the Aperture Library.aplibrary file to launch Aperture (this will set the library file in your preferences for you).
Reapply your preferences.
Try importing and see whether the thumbnails render.
This issue has been mentioned before so you are not alone. Maybe do a search on "thumbnails"
I would still try using Canon's Imagebrowser to migrate the RAW's from the camera to a folder on your disk. Then see if Aperture import sees the thumbnails successfully when you import them from disk.
Best practice is to use a card reader .... no chance of batteries going flat part way through an import and no chance of dropping your SLR on the floor because it was perched precariously on the desk by the side of your display. Also card readers are faster, much faster if it is a firewire one ... and cheap.
Best practice would also IMO be to copy from card reader to a folder on disk and then burn to DVD. This cuts down the data movements to a minimum before you get a stable archival backup. Then after burning to DVD, import from the folder into Aperture. It adds a few minutes up front, but you already have your backup finished.

  • Thumbnails in Import Window Empty for Nikon D90

I recently acquired a Nikon D90 and it is working well with Aperture except in one regard. When I turn the camera on and the import window appears the thumbnails are always empty (just the dashed outline shows). I don't see this with my other cameras. I had hoped yesterdays update to Camera Raw support might fix it but it did not.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have the same problem but it seems to be linked to whether you shoot in RAW or RAW+JPG. If you go for the later you get the thumbnail preview. For RAW only you get nothing. I'm assuming the thumbnail is only referencing the JPG.

  • Blurry Thumbnails in Import window on LR5

LR-5 is showing blurred thumbnails in the Import window.  They look great when I click them open to large view.  Is there a fix for this problem? I'm using Windows 7.

  • No thumbnails in LR3 import window

I no longer have any thumbnails in the import window for LR3.  The options to "Check All" & "Check None" are still there but with no thumbnails to reference...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried with that option checked and unchecked. In neither case was a higher-res thumbnail generated when I changed the thumbnail size using the slider. So far, Aperture insists on providing a thumbnail that is perhaps 150x150 and then resizing that thumbnail—pixellation and all—when the thumbnail size is increased.

  • Increase size of thumbnails in Import screen

    Hi All,
When I import files from disk to import into iPhoto, the thumbnails are too small to distinguish what the photo is. The slider on the lower right hand side of the screen, is not part of the import window, so it does not affect the thumbnails in the import screen.
Would someone be able to tell me the magi sequence to get these larger so I can determine whether to import the picture or not?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi Steve: I see the issue you are referring to. What type of disk are you importing from? CD? If so, this might work. With the CD in the drive, open finder, navigate to the CD in question within finder. Select Icon view, then in the Menu bar, select View > Show View Options. From within this little window, change the icon size to something larger, IE: 150.
I notice you are using Leopard 10.5, so options may look a little different than mine.
If you are using some other type of disk, post back
    Hope this helps

  • No Video Images Appear In iMovie Import Window

My Vixia hv 30 mini DV is connected and recognized, and when I choose to import video manually, and hit the iMovie Import button, the video plays on the camera screen but not in the iMovie import window on my iMac. Nor does the counter move, although a large message in the iMovie window says "importing". The camera's counter in the upper right hand corner of the window counts off, but not the counter next to the controls at the bottom of the window. A file name is created in the Event Library, but there is nothing in the file when I click it.
I have tried importing segments of all sizes and lengths to see if there was an issue there but no video appears on the iMovie screen, and there is no message that thumbnails are being created.
I have watched tutorials online to see if I am missing something but I have found no answers. I was able to import a one-minute segment automatically a few days ago when I first got the camera, but now Automatic does not work. It begins to import, with no images appearing in the iMovie import window and no movement in the counter, then after a few seconds the "Importing" message changes to "Stopped"
In my 'Save To" window, it says I have "5.7GB free/25 min.)" on my Mac's HD.

I found that this was due to my tape having been recorded on an older DV camcorder rather than an HDV. You'd think either iMovie or the Canon Vixia would simply tell you that in plain language, rather than give you the kind of cryptic meaningless message that the camera displays.
If you have this problem, go into the camera menu and make sure the format —DV or HDV— matches the content on your tape.

  • Stuck on generating thumbnails for imported footage

I've got a problem with importing DV footage from a camcorder using Firewire. In my preferences, I have selected all analysis options. It's my understanding that FCP is supposed to automatically analyze the footage as it's being recorded to disk.
So, after the import process from tape completes and I close the import window, I don't see any evidence of analysis having completed, or even begun. There are no smart folders for People and Synchronization as evidence. When I go to view the background tasks, I see that Transcoding and Analysis is stuck at 0%, while Rendering (specifically, Generating Thumnails) is shown as an active task, but no progress percentage is displayed. And it seems to be stuck like that forever, even if I leave my speedy new quad core alone for hours. I don't know how long this process is supposed to take (I only import up to an hour of DV clips at a time), and whether the analysis is supposed to start after rendering thumbnails is complete, but FCP is giving no indication that it's making any progress at all, which is disconcerting.
The only remedy seems to be to close FCP, re-open it, and then manually choose Analyze and Fix on all the clips in the event browser, which then seems to work. And without a generating thumbnails phase.

Solution for Me: Follow all the above and then open and leave open, iPhoto before opening iMovie.
Background: Attempted to open iMovie-11 after a three week break, only to see it freeze after authorising it to make new Thumbnails of the videos in iPhoto. Allowed 15mins in case it was actually working behind the scenes before 'force-quitting.'
The pattern was repeated many times despite meticulously following all the advice on this thread and several others around the forum. Nothing seemed to fix the snag with many valuable hours wasted.
Usually when solving issues, I close all programmes not directly related to the problem app. (I resaon that memory and resources are better 'concentrated') I recalled that  iMovie initially grounded when trying to make thumbnails of my iPhoto videos I think after an update. So out of curiosity I opened iPhoto and iMovie loaded safely. iMovie did stumble one more time after replacing the suspected errant folders from my desktop into the Users / iMovie folder, (as in Bruce EBonus excellent suggestion above) but another 'repair permissions' and re-boot and everything has been fine since.
I hope this helps anyone suffering the same issue.

  • HT4589 FCP X 10.0.7 blank thumbnails on import

I don't know if others have noticed this issue but on the new release (10.0.7) I sometimes don't see the thumbnail preview of the media in my import window (usually after importing some parts and then reopening the window to import more.. and no, it's not because I have hide imported clips checked off). The card is loaded but the thumbnails are all blue (no picture showing). If I click on the blank thumbnail then it will show the preview but as soon as I unclick then the thumbnail preview goes blank again. I have both stills and video on the same card (haven't tried to see if it's different if I only have one kind of media.) This media is from a 5DMKiii on a 600X Lexar CF card with Firewire connection to my MBP RD. This would happen occasionally on 10.0.6 (the nightmare update!) as well but never on the previous versions. If I exit and restart FCPX and restart the app then the problem is solved; but if I import and then come back and reimport I will sometimes see this problem. Anybody else has seen this problem? Is it just a bug? Have to wait for the next version again?!!

Yes Tom. That's the strange thing with the 10.0.6 update on. These problem occur with some folks and not others. After the 10.0.6 I had the same problem on my 3 MBPs that date back for each of the past three years including the brand new MBP RD with SSD. Since the problem was happening on all three it can't be computer based. However, because it happens for some folks and not others it would mean that some folks have software configurations that clash with FCPX's new code. Whether it was only due to the plugins or even possibly the presence of other applications on the whole system that interfere is anyone's guess. And that's been the frustrating part, the fact that some folks have the problems and others don't. I don't think anyone has yet found a common denominator. Of course, plugins were immediately judged to be an issue. But I don't know if anyone has come up with anything else yet. So, we'll see. Hopefully we'll get some resolution at some point. All I know is that 10.0.5 was the best editing software I have ever used. It was amazingly stable and everything worked beautifully. 10.0.7 has been a lot better than 10.0.6 but it still crashes occasionally and has these little quirky things.
Oh well. Hopefully we'll be back in track soon again.
    Thanks again.

  • ACR import window position

Hi - when I open ACR from Bridge the import window showing the selected file(s) opens as it should. My windows XP pro and PSCS3 are working for a good while already without problems. Starting a few days ago all the sudden this ACR window will open on my secondary monitor not on my primary monitor where it used to open.
I was able to drag this window (always set to reduced window size) to the primary monitor but the setting apparently did not get stored and the next time I opened the window it was at the secondary monitor again. After a few times now the window even is locked in the full frame setting (or slightly larger placing the minimize and reduce buttons outside the monitor) and I can no longer reduce the window and move it.
Unfortunate because I only have the primary monitor calibrated.
Can I set or reset preferences for the position of the ACR window? I searched but did not find the settings. Bug or feature? :-P

I use Bridge in partial window mode (not maximized, but covering almost all the monitor area of both monitors). I have it set up that I see the thumbnails of one selected folder in the right secondary screen and the detailed view of a selected image together with "explorer like" ("folders" and "metadata") overview of folders in the left primary display.
When I open Camera Raw by double click on one image it opens ACR 4.41. It now covers the entire secondary monitor. It looks like full screen mode except it seems too large, just clipping the buttons on the right top to toggle full screen and reduced screen. I cannot grab the top of the ACR window to move it. ACR works fine I can use all settings.

  • I'm trying to import some Hi8 into FCPX via a Canon GL2.  Although the footage shows up in the import window, it says "Camera not controllable".  The manual import button does activate, but footage is not actually being imported.  Any ideas?  Thanks

    What Tom said.
Or you may be able to import using a different program - try with Quicktime Player, "New Movie Recording". If the camera appears as an option, it should work.

  • Preview of CR2 raw files on import window from camera

    Hi
I have this problem with my Canon XTI. When I connect the camera to the computer and open the import dialog window, I can not see the previews of my CR2 raw files. But if I copy the CR2 files to he hard disk and try tho import from it, then previews are shown on the import window.
    Can anybody help me?

Probably because the program is trying to write back a marker to the card as it "opens" the images for the preview and the camera won't let it.
It's not a good idea to import images directly from the camera anyway. Card readers are really cheap - and they WILL let you see the previews.

  • IMovie '13: Import window does not open

I can't get the Import Window to open. (Sure it worked the first time I tried)
    Anyone with same problem?
    Anyone with a possible solution?
No matter if I press Import in the toolbar or use the menu (cmd I) the main window will dim, but the overlaying Import Window will not open.
After that I can only quit the program. I can drag and drop movie files without problems.
The only way the Import Window will open is to attach my camera. The Import Window will open automatically when iMovie sees the drive.
I have tried to re-install iMovie and deleted preference files, but with no succes so far.

I managed to locate the problem
I have an Elgato EyeTV 610. It is an old DVB-C TV Tuner hooked up on Firewire.
When I remove the EyeTV 610 from the Firewireport it works fine.
As mentioned in my first posting I was able to have the import window pop up by attaching my camera.
The workaround also works when pluggin in my iPhone (Import window pops up automatically)

  • Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS has compatability with those files.

Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS had compatibility with those files added long ago. Am I missing something?

I agree Terrance. However, I was able to copy other large batches of other files (my music for example) without any issues. The issue only showed up when copying iPhoto's library and/or the photos themselves. This was repeated 3 times; I copied all my other files to the drive then it unmounted on iPhoto. And, as I said, again when I started with a fresh reformat and just iPhoto. That does not seem like hardware to me if it is only happening with one set of files.
I have managed to get the iPhoto library to work on my other external drive. It wanted a rebuild twice and a thumbnail rebuild once. I am now attempting to copy it over to the new HGST internal drive.
Anyone have a suggestion for alternatives to iPhoto? I have aperture, maybe I will try that. But from what I understand, it just shares the same library as iPhoto.
