Thunar as default file manager for firefox

i am using xubuntu 9.04..
I'm using Openbox as windows manager[pure openbox session], it's working great, but i have a problem ...
open containing folder doestnt recognize Thunar as my only file manager, it keeps asking to open with...
how can fix this problem?
thank you in advance

I am having a similiar issue... when I hit open folder it pops up sometype of file search program
EDIT: Perhaps this works for you... for some reason it doesn't for me...
http://rubylution.ping.de/articles/2007 … nder-linux
Basically navigate to about:config and create the following three:
network.protocol-handler.expose.file = true (Boolean)
network.protocol-handler.external.file = true (Boolean)
network.protocol-handler.app.file = /usr/bin/thunar (String)
The program that runs instead of thunar has a title "Find Files" -- I did a quick search of installed programs related to "search" and I only have catfish installed and I know that is not the program... How would I go about determing what this application is or what it is a part of? Is there a way I can click on the program and it output the PID so I can then match it up with the entry in top/htop?
SOLVED : figured it out... it was pcmanfm search program... for some reason it was not opening the folder but instead opening its search program... removing pcmanfm from my system fixed it and now folders are properly opening with thunar

  • Thunar as default file manager

Hi, i've installed today kdemod and now the default file manager in gnome is konqueror. I used thunar and i want to put it back to default file manager. I've found this tuturial but i can't execute the command sudo. i've already add my user trought visudo but i doesn't apear on /etc/sudoers so when i try to run sudo when it asks me the password even if I put the root password it doesn't allow me to execute the command.. Any sugestion to solve the problems?? I really want to get back thunar to default manager.
    cumps

What is your user name and the output of cat /etc/sudoers ?
With sudo you should use your user password not your root password
You can also use the "su" command built-in linux,
typing "su" or "su root" prompt a root password query dialog and then gives you a root terminal
sudo is a mean to gain root privilege that's all, you can follow the tuto without it.
Edit : I haven't see that actually sudo is called in the scripts
you can edit the script removing calls to sudo. and run them as root
the part with aptitude is ubuntu specific, it's their package manager like pacman is ours
    so adapt the command accordingly
Also maybe archlinux doesn't put gnome .desktop like ubuntu
use the locate command to find it
example "locate nautilus" or "locate nautilus |grep /usr/share" (to limit the result to /usr/share if you have too much result)
if you had just installed something and want to look for it don't forget to run "updatedb" beforehand

  • How to make nemo default file browser for Firefox

I use Linux Mint. When I download some file and then click on "Open Containing Folder" button it opens Nautilus file browser. Default file browser on my computer is Nemo, so I would like to always use it.

It is possible to [[Set how Firefox handles different types of files]]. Please open the following options to find that menu:
    # Open Options/Preferences
    # Open Applications
    # Select the action desired
However if the item is not there, Is that file explorer the default explorer on the linux machine?

  • PCManFM2 is now the default file manager for Lubuntu (LXDE ubuntu)

Just to let you know that probably PCManFM2 is going to be ready in the near future.
    http://lubuntu.net/tags/pcmanfm2

There are, as I understand it, three big issues keeping Btrfs from hitting its final "stable" release:
    1) No true fsck (as of November, a fix is due "any time now")
    2) The logic used for subvolumes (a sort of "virtual LVM" setup) in Btrfs is wholly different from that used in Ext*, JFS, NTFS, HFS, etc; because of this, there isn't yet a single script/program that will accurately display space consumption.  Instead, the user needs to run a couple different commands and extrapolate.  A little annoying, but it doesn't affect stability.
    3) A bug in the COW aspect of the defrag command which, if run with an incorrect flag, can cause a doubling in the amount of metadata on the filesystem (and thus the amount of space it consumes).  Again, it won't wreck anything, but would make management tedious if one needs to restore a snapshot to get rid of extra cruft.
These are all mentioned in the FAQ's on the Btrfs wiki, though the wiki doesn't give priority to any of them.  I'm guessing that, if Fedora 16 will be using this later in the year, the Oracle folks have told the Red Hat folks that they're planning on plowing through these issues very soon.

  • Changing Default file manager Nautilus to Thunar

I am running Gnome, but want Thunar as my default file manager. Last time I did this my desktop froze. I did it with some Ubuntu script https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DefaultFileManager. Is there someway I can do this without my desktop freezing?

    Maybe these methods:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=692238 (just replace pcmanfm with thunar)

  • Changing the default file manager in XFCE

How would I go about using Nautilus as the default file manager in XFCE instead of Thunar? I know it can be started up with 'nautilus --no-desktop', but how do I make this the default when opening folders from the desktop, menus, etc..?
The main reason I want to do this is because Thunar doesn't seem to remember a folders last setting. For example, there are folders which I would like to permanently view as a list, sorted by date; but there are plenty of other folders where this is not suitable. Nautilus remembers settings for each folder, Thunar doesn't, and it gets annoying changing the view mode each time. Also network browsing is easier in Nautilus, and I also like the way it tells you how fast file transfers are going.
    Thanks very much,

Well, it might be considered a dirty hack but it has worked for me in gnome before so it should also work in xfce.  Just edit the thunar.desktop file in /usr/share/applications and replace the Exec=thunar to Exec=nautilus --no-desktop and save the file.  Then any time thunar is launched, nautilus will be launched instead.
Otherwise, you can edit the menu with the menu editor and change the File manager command and do the same in the panel icon properties.  Both methods will work.

  • Good file-manager for OpenBox? (with icons)

I tried rox with the magickthumbnails and videothumbmails, but havent got it working yet.
I am now trying thunar, but it has dull generic icons.  Everything looks like a piece of paper.  I'm sure it'd look good if I was running XFCE.
Is there a standard/common file-manager for use with openbox?  Preferably one with icons for different file-types.

    in my ~/.gtkrc-2.0.mine:

    # stock["gtk-help"] = {{"help-icon.png"}}
    stock["rox-show-hidden"] = {{"filter.png"}}
    stock["rox-show-details"] = {{"view_tree.png"}}
    # stock["rox-select"] = {{"select-icon.png"}}
    widget "*" style "normal"
    it's quite self explanatory .

    Could u also elaborate this line < pixmap_path "~/.icons/panel_icons/icons_2" > ?

  • Change default file manager in linux

After upgrading to Firefox 10.0 for Linux "Open containing folder" in downloads opens in nautilus and not my default file manager.
I'm not finding how to change this behavior.

File associations are a mess right now. Many programs (Opera included) handle them their own way. There's a project underway to handle associations in a standard way (see MIME actions, shared MIME info, desktop entries, all at freedesktop.org), but not all software uses it; KDE is a notable holdout (3 at least, not sure about 4).
Note that that first spec link, MIME actions, is currently "in the requirements-gathering / early-planning stages." That means there is no spec for that. As I said, a mess.
Most likely, Opera and Thunderbird detected you were running KDE and special-cased their association-finder to ask KDE instead. Now that you aren't, they're falling back to their normal behavior: use the first .desktop file to claim the MIME type. As I recall, both applications offer ways to specify associations in their preferences; you might just want to stick to that for now. Or use a desktop environment.
The kernel-level MIME support is designed to allow execution of strange files using interpreters. For example, you could directly execute Windows applications (as in "./notepad.exe") by setting the kernel to "interpret" application/exe files using wine. No applications use it for opening files.

  • How do you set the default file manager in kde?

I'd like to set dolphin as the default file manager in KDE, how would I go about doing that?  I have an installed working copy of dolphin on my comp right now.

    pressh wrote:

kde components -> file associations -> inode -> directory
Thanks, but for some reason when I go in there and change it as a user, it doesn't save the setting, and it doesn't work.  However, when I do the same thing as root it works, but of course, it only works for root then.

actually i think konqueror is more powerfull in kde3. However, the dolphin version in kde4 trunk is shaping up nice and looks promising.
Dolphin is a little bit less cluttered, and seems to be faster too.  Most of the features in konquerer I never use.

  • Failed to execute default file manager (Input /Output Error) [SOLVED]

I'm having an issue in XFCE where the default Terminal, Browser and File Manager launch correctly - but with this error:
Failed to execute default [file manager] [terminal emulator] [browser]
    Input /Output Error
I have the requisite  "Preferred Application" set as Chrome/Thunar/xfce4-terminal.
    If I run
    exo-open --launch FileManager
    From terminal, it says:
[1]    4281 segmentation fault (core dumped)  exo-open --launch FileManager
Remember, it launches the app successfully - and the apps themselves launch correctly, it's only exo-open that I have a problem with!  Everything else works great on this system.

Tried downgrading glibc from 2.21-3 to 2.21-2 as this is the package which contains libpthread.so, and on my other arch workstations I don't have the issue, but to no avail, same error box pops up when using exo-open, and my IDEs are not starting.
I'll try comparing installed packages versions on both workstations.

  • [transmission]default file manager.

    Hello!
I've installed transmission-gtk,downloaded some stuff, and when I clicked "Open Folder", showed a window with "Failed to execute default File Manager.".I tried to run update-alternatives, but found out that it never had been in arch=)

  • Chromium default file manager

Some time ago I was screwing around with the Chromium file associations, for reasons I do not recall. It must have been to do with implementing torrent file associations because since then every time I try to 'Open in Folder' or click an entry in the downloads bar at the bottom, a dialogue box appears: 'Failed to execute default File Manager / Failed to execute child process / "transmission" (No such file or directory).'
It's recently started to quite bother me, so I've decided to get it resolved at last. There is no transmission entry in any of the xdg-related files as far as I can see, so I have no idea which backwater file I edited to cause this problem. Any ideas where to look, or what to reinstall?

Nope, nothing in that thread worked. Thanks anyway.
However, I did find this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115647
    exo-preferred-applications -c
Show in Folder now works. But other file associations are not working. On my other Arch installation, clicking on PDF and torrent files from within Chromium automatically sends them to the appropriate program. Instead, here I get a dialog, presumably spawned by Nautilus, telling me the destination is not a folder.
At least it's now quicker to get to the directory and open the file manually.

  • Set default file manager to ranger on arch

On ubuntu based distributions I would use exo-prefered-applications. In arch I created a desktop file containing "exec=terminator -n ranger", added it to mimeinfo.cache, and added the line inode/directory=ranger.desktop to mimeapps.list. However, when I run "xdg-open ." it opens the directory in firefox... So what is the process to use a terminal application like ranger as a default file manager in arch?

cfr wrote:xdg-mime or one of the alternatives, I think.
Yeah, that is basically what I did. I just realized the problem was that I mixed up "-n" with "-x." It is working now!
