Thunderbolt - FW400 professional audio

Hi, has someone tested a Digidesign digi 002 FW400 audio system with double adapter FW400-FW800 and FW800-Thunderbolt?
Thank you

You probably should post this question at the Digidesign site.
The only way to find out if it works is buy the adapters and try them yourself.
If this doesn't work,  I would think you would be able to return the cables ASAP and get your money back.

  • FCP X and Professional Audio Post

I use FCS3 and have just bought FCP X, Motion5  and Compressor 4 but I also work as a professional audio sound designer/editor/mixer.
As FCP X won't export to any DAW, not even Apple's, now old, SoundTrack Pro or provide OMF for programs like ProTools what professional post production facility is really going to choose this application for it's workflow.
It may be wonderful for the all-in-one producer for the web but post houses and broadcasters won't be making the jump to this software.
I'm sure Apple will make money selling this to iMovie users who want more but they have totally ignored most of their professional user base with the critical omissions in  this release.

Do you understand what I mean by "split tracks?" A typical delivery for me requires the following isolated split tracks as either a Quicktime file or as stems:  1) mono Dialog, 2) mono VO, 3) mono FX, 4) mono music 5&6) Full Stereo mix, 7&8) a Music and FX stereo mix.  In FCS that was simple. How exactly am I supposed to do that in FCP X with no independent tracks to build on or isolated channels to export out to?
Tell me, how am I supposed to do that?
Man you're so old school it s****. Like dude, who needs that? I do great stuff for YouTube and got paid for my last gig, the guys thought it was great! iDVD OK, but same thing! I'm an f******g pro editor man, and you old guys with your last century ideas need to get a life cos this is where it's all going and you're gonna be toast cos this UI is amazing! What are you on man? FCP X can do sound! Some stuff there about stereo or mono or whatever that I don't get but it works, first time. I brought my last project in and it's all there. Cuts, and wicked FX - the wipe thing I did, all there. This rocks!
OK, I should have un-spellchecked it a little, txted it up a bit...

Thanks for the update although this I had personally worked this out myself. Surely this card is to be released globally soon as it has started to pop up in stores available for pre-order. Any ideas on the release date and what will be the differences?
I have tried to compare it to the <span class="text">Fatalty version to find no difference other than cosmetic. I even went into the FAQ page only to get this:

  • Thunderbolt to hdmi audio inconsistent

    I have the macbook pro 2010 i7 2.66G 15" with 8g ram osx 10.9.2
connect the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter, video is perfect, but the audio quality is inconsistent,
the way I set it up,
turn on the samsung tv to hdmi input source
    turn on the macbook pro
set the sound output to samsung hdmi
play the video in vlc, quicktime or youtube.
sometime it is good, but when I stop and play again, either same video or another video, the audio will drop out, noise etc.
if I do the same in another MBP 13" 2011, 4G ram, os x 10.7.6. everything is fine.
would it be some driver program on mbp 2010 that is not 100% compatible to hdmi audio?
base on this, I can assume the hdmi cable and hdmi adapter is not the issue.
    please suggest.
    thanks.

I believe so.  See this writeup about a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable, and, in particular, its reference to audio.

  • Two Thunderbolt Displaysand USB Audio Issue

I have a brand spanking new Macbook Pro 15" Retina (2.7 Ghz, 16GB RAM, discrete graphics chip).  I also have two thunderbolt displays, one is about a year and a half old, the other is pretty new.
I also use an Apogee Duet 2 USB sound card.
If I plug the USB soundcard into my Thunderbolt USB, after a few minutes the audio is all distorted.  I've so far resorted to using a USB port on the MBP itself, which fixes the issue.
Is there a "Best practices" guide for how to connect up these displays?  I currently have them daisy chained, so I have just the two cables going into my Mac which I wanted.  Is there a better way to hook this up for reliability sake?

I have this exact same issue.  I wish there was a fix but I have been looking for a while.  Apple must know about it!

  • Thunderbolt to HDMI audio issues

I apologize in advance if this has already been asked in some way that I didn't see in my previous searches for answers.
Why is it telling me this? I have been pushing audio through perfectly fine, then yesterday it started to display this and was no longer pushing anything. Anyone know how to fix? I have changed nothing on my physical display or my prferences to bring about this change.

I posted a picture on there, but it appears it didn't go through. I shall attempt to get it up again.

  • 21.5" Imac with 2.8ghz Quad-Core i7, 16gb ram and 2 TB hd to use for professional audio recording with Logic 9?

Does anyone have any experience with this exact conifguration? I would like to purchase this and use it for 5-10 years of solid audio production. Any shortcomings?

Ok. So I now I found a local seller who is selling a 2008 Mac Pro. Does anyone want to advice which would be the smarter route to go. This is used, but they are guaranteeing that it is in incredible shape. It's a bit old:
This is a gently used, mechanically sound and tech tested Apple Mac Pro. I am only selling due to our business upgrading, otherwise I love this machine, and would not be selling it. It comes fully loaded (both hardware and software), and is ready for the most robust tasks.
Included with the Mac Pro is 2 brand-new sealed 20.5" Lenovo LCD monitors, Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard. Currently, the Mac Pro is setup for dual monitors on the 512mb NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video card.
The memory on the Mac Pro has been upgraded to 16GB and an Apple OEM 256 GB Toshiba Solid State Drive (SSD) has been added to increase boot up speeds to mere seconds.  The SSD can be configured to run either OS X Lion or Snow Leopard and will also house all of the applications.  The combination of 16GB RAM and the applications residing on the SSD enables this machine to perform at amazing speeds.  It can seamlessly render video and run other ram intensive applications with ease, making this a perfect addition to anyone's video editing studio.
In addition to the 256 SSD, the Mac Pro has a total of 4 TB of storage space with two separate 2 TB hard drives for storing massive amounts of data. (2 open bays if you wish to add more storage).
    LOADED SOFTWARE:
MS Office 2011 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Communicator
Adobe CS5 Mastersuite (Photoshop, Encore, Flash, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, FireWorks, Catalyst, Contribute, After Effects, Bridge, and much more!)
    Final Cut Pro 7
    iLife 2011
    Aperture 3
    Adobe Acrobat X (PDF Editor)
All applications have been freshly reinstalled with their appropriate activation keys. The machine comes ready to go with no administrative password for either operating system (Lion or Snow Leopard).
Thanks for looking and if you have any questions feel free to ask! This Mac Pro comes with a 30 day warranty against DOA.  Buy with confidence.
If you like the machine, I have a little room to work on the price if you do not want the SSD. Otherwise price is FIRM. This machine is a powerhouse!

  • Best printable and reliable CD-R for professional Audio - Burnspeed

    Imation (sells AppleStore)?
    Verbatim?
    Burn-speed?
    Burn with WaveBurner or iTunes?
    Should RUN on ANY Audio-CD-Player
    Thank You!

To a certain extent I have to disagree with the previous posts regarding burn speeds.
If the disc is being used as a general listening copy then the burn speed is not much of an issue provided you are using decent discs and listening back on a player with robust error handling.
However, I visited a glass mastering facility a while ago and was shown comparative error reports between discs that were written at low and high speeds. There is a massive difference in favour of disc rendered at low speeds. Discs being sent for production should either be written at the lowest permissible speed or, if you have the facility, send a DDP file.
An interesting test is to write the same content (preferably a full length cd's worth) to two discs. One at the lowest possible speed and the other at the highest. Have a look at the surface of the two discs. The disc written at the higher speed will have a graduated shade. The lighter the shade the more error correction will need doing when the disc is being read. The disc written at the slower speed will have a consitantly dark shade - fewer errors. While this experiment is a bit like Nigel Tuffnell telling you to listen to the sustain on his guitar without strumming it, this visible representation will follow any error reading ouput using the relevant test software.

  • Any information on EMU Professional audio drivers for Vista x6

I was just wondering if someone could shed a bit more light on this subject as TBA (from the driver chart) isn't very hopeful ?

  • Using Professional Monitors (Audio) with a 24" iMac

I would like to use a pair of high quality professional audio monitors with my iMac for listening to music at my office. I'm wondering if the analog audio output from the iMac is up to the task or if I should find some way to use the 5.1 DTS digital output and convert that signal to standard audio 2-channel SPDIF (I have a DA converter I could use) before sending the signal to the monitors.
    Any advice?

Thanks for the information. One concern I have is that the studio audio monitors I will be using, which are active, are designed to receive a professional balanced +4 dBu line level signal. I doubt the analog output of the iMac is at that level. It is certainly not a balanced signal. Hence, I fear I may experience a signal to noise ratio that is not quite optimum. I can certainly give it a try, given that it will only require some cable adaptors and patching.
I am interested in the digital output of the iMac. I do not understand what Apple means when it states that the Toslink digital output is 5.1 DTS using SPDIF. To my understanding, SPDIF is as 2 channel format, capable of a variety of bit depth/sample rate settings (ranging between 16 bit/44.1 Hz to 24 bit/96k Hz) and is essentially an unbalanced version of the balanced AES3 (AES/EBU) format.
I have a rather nice Lucid DA 2496 digital to analog converter that accepts the standard 2 channel SPDIF and outputs a healthy +4 dBu balanced analog signal - which is exactly what my Quested F11 active audio monitors expect.
    Any advive on these issues?

  • Why doesn't the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock relay sound from it's audio out port?

Posted to Belkin Support community to no avail
    =====================
Why can't my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock operate my desktop speakers?
    Options
    07-14-2014 01:48 PM
Bought a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock at the Apple Store to use with my new MacBook Pro.
When I connected it to my
    -20" Mac Cinema display,
-Various USB connected hubs and devices,
    -Various Firewire hubs and devices
-My ethernet network from my Cable Modem
Then made the last connection from the Dock to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro...
    All was fine.
But when I made that one last connection - to my desktop speakers via the audio-out port on the dock (earphones icon) nothing happened.  The dock did not pick up the audio from the laptop playng an iTunes song or send it to the desktop speakers.  When I unplugged the audio cable from the Dock and plugged it in to the MacBook Pro directly, the desktop speakers kicked right in again.
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
Of for some reason, can that signal not be carried by Thunderbolt?
Will I have to get used to the onerous task of unplugging 2 cables from my MacBook Pro when I want to more it to another location in stead of just 1 cable?
But stay with me.  Here's the thing.
When this happened I called Belkin Customer Support to ask if they could help me.  After taking me through their steps, they agreed that the unit must be defective and agreed to ship me a replacement Thunderbolt Express Dock.
The replacement arrived over the weekend and when I shut down my system and then plugged everything from Dock I purchased into the replacement Thunderbird Express Dock - - - - - the same thing happened!
No signal to the speakers from the dock.  Perfect signal when the plug moved from the Dock to the computer itself.
    Hence my question:
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
    Can it accomplish that function?
Am I really that unlucky to have received 2 defective new Belkin Thunderbolt Express Docks in a row?
Or is it simply a matter of the Dock not handling audio throughput in the manner I am expecting.
Then again, if this is the case, why did the Belkin techies not know this when I called them in the first place.
Yes, I'm going on and on here.  But I really don't have time for this.
    What's going on here?

OK.  No reason to be playing games here.  Just surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up here on the community boards as well.  Here's the simple solution

After reaching a Level III technician in Belkin customer support today and having spent approximately 4-5 person hours on this issue, we figured out that the Sound/Output preferences in the Apple System Preferences should not be set to "Internal Speakers"  but rather set to "USB PnP Sound Device".
Worked like a charm.  Simple, elegant solution to a real problem, one likely to be encountered by 90% of the people who buy a Belkin Thunderbid Express Dock off the shelves of any Apple Store to use with a current generation Apple laptop or desktop computer.
But the Level III Belkin technician admmtted that this critical little piece of simple, straightforward information should have been readily available to their Level 1 techies who began helping me 5 person hours ago.  Would even have saved Balkin loads of customer service support time.
    And so the saga ends
Belkin owes me for helping them learn this precious lesson.

  • When playing any audio the audio quality on my Thunderbolt display steadily worsens over an hour period and becomes garbled. Restarting the media player fixes it. Does not occur when MacBook Pro is undocked.

When playing audio/video on my MacBook Pro docked to Thunderbolt display the audio quality steadily worsens until it is garbled beyond understanding. I don't know if it occurs when using the MacBook undocked. It takes about an hour to become noticeable and steadily worsens. Simultaneously when the computer speaks the time this is also gargled. As the problem develops it sounds like there is a static halo around each spoken word.

    Hi GeoChester,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are experiencing some sound issues on your Mac that worsens over time. In this situation, the first troubleshooting step that I would recommend would be to reset your computer’s PRAM. To do this, please follow the instructions in the following attached article.
