TIFF JPEG conversion bug

built-in JPEG converter, when used to send TIFF files to a .Mac screensaver or when used to export TIFF files to JPEG, results in distorted images on certain kinds of TIFF files, resulting in portions of the image displayed in vertical stripes across the screen... this seems to happen mostly to landscape-oriented photos which were scannned from 8x10 prints at 48-bit 600dpi (5960x4699) with a file size around 100MB... but does not occur on similar scans in portrait mode (4699x5899)... indicating a possible horizontal resolution limit around 5000?
tested these same problem files with GraphicConverter and the resulting JPEGs did not have this problem

OK, it's not loading the file that I'm having problems with, it's in the encoding:
JAI.create( "encode", image, bos, format, null ) ;If I change the format to encode it as a TIFF file it returns the whole image. But I need to get it in a JPG or PNG format. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

    Hi David Turner,
    What is the exact error message which you are facing while converting the file from .tiff  format to PDF format.
    As per my knowledge, PDF Pack supports conversion from .tiff format to PDF Format -Different File formats that Adobe PDF Pack supports.

    Just upgraded to Mavericks. Now I cannot access scans from my hp scanner. After it complete the scans and I try to save as tiff, jpeg or pdf I get a either a grey blur or a message that says cannot save because the file cannot be written to. I did not have any problems before the upgrade. I would greatly appreciate any light shed on this.

    Go to the HP site and look for drivers for your scanner. It apparently needs an updated driver to work with Mavericks.

  • Is it possible to save metadata to both files in an imported pair?  (Tiff & Jpeg).

    I imported many files that were tiff & jpeg pairs (with the import preference box checked 'Do Not treat as seprate files when file names are the same') into LR3.  Since then, i have been unable to write new metadata, such as captions, keywords, etc., to both the JPG and Tif files.  LR3, and now also LR5 both only seem to want to write to the tiff files.  How do i get the metadata easily saved onto the jeg files as well?  (preferably without re-importing as separate files).  Thank you.

    To separate them:
    0. Make sure the 'Treat JPEGs separately' box is ticked in Lr preferences, and
    1.   Invoke the 'Separate Jpegs from Raws' feature of RawPlusJpeg, *iff* it recognizes your tiffs as raw, or
    2.1   Rename the jpegs temporarily (to an invalid extension), then resync the folder(s) (that will force Lr to forget about the sidecars).
    2.2   Rename the jpegs back, and resync again, reimporting the jpegs.
    That way, you won't need to re-import your tiffs, thus losing photo standing (e.g. collections, publish services, ... ) and edit-history...

  • JPEG conversion for printing

    Hi All
    I teach a photography class at a local college where the students have to submit assignments regularly. Our requirements are that they hand in a print and an unedited RAW file. Because we are focusing on their photographic technique, they aren't allowed to edit the photos at all.
    They then print the photos at local photo labs (fuji fronteir machines) but the printing results are inconsistent and sometimes shocking.
    to cust down on possible workflow problems, I have advised them to build a relationship with their printer, use calibrated monitors (which we have at the college), etc. etc. However, I am starting to suspect that the problem lies with the RAW to JPEG conversion and possible the color spaces they are using. Most of them shoot in Adobe RGB and use that in their computer workspace.
    So far I have told them to make sure that they convert the files to sRGB before printing - to save the RAW as a PSD file and convert it to a JPEG using image processor with the "convert to sRGB" option turned on.
    I am now at a point when I am going to arrange a workshop so I would love any help or advice that you may have.
    I look forward to all the great suggestions I know I am going to get.
    Regards
    David Ceruti

    Correct.
    The Fuji Frontier printer won’t do any gamut conversion.
    It just prints "by the numbers", expecting sRGB.
    To put it simple.
    >> Our requirements are that they hand in a print and an unedited RAW file. Because we are focusing on their photographic technique, they aren't allowed to edit the photos at all...
    Most of them shoot in Adobe RGB ...<<
    It is fairly impossible to print from an un-interpreted / unedited Raw file. Editing is the name of the game. Sounds as if the students were shooting Raw + JPG (nothing wrong with this). Only the JPG will be subject to the in-camera setting to Abobe RGB. Should be converted to sRGB before giving it to the Fuji Frontier. If it is really Raw + JPG shooting, it may be easier to set the camera to sRGB. Nothing lost here, because you always have the Raw file to resort to in ACR.

  • Seeking solution for RAW to jpeg conversion on 1TB disk[s] of images

    Please read fully
    Greetings,
    I have a bit of a dilemma as most might have as well. I have about
    3.5TB of RAW images in various directories and seeking an automated
    way to convert RAW to jpeg on numerous directories...and go get a
    coffee while the process is working (maybe have a nap or two lol)
    For many months I have searched for a solution that takes the source
    disk (yes disk and not directory by directory) and implements a NEF to
    jpeg conversion placing the destination directory on another hard
    drive or a separate directory keeping the same source directory
    structure. So at the end of the day I would have full sized jpegs and
    PSD's in the same directory structure as the source. That make sense?
    I have been in other forums and asked but the solutions were using the
    typical Photoshop solutions and it does not make a dupe directory
    structure as the source.
    Any solutions? Ideas?
    Thanks,
    D.S. Hathaway

    This is what I'm trying to do. It seems the Image Processor does not handle multiple directories at once.
    MainDrive (source)
    |
    |
    1234_flag_images
    2345_ball_images
    3456_table_images
    etc
    In the directory 1234_flag_images contains
    1234_flag1.nef
    1234_flag2.nef
    1234_flag3.nef
    WIP <---directory Work in Progress contains
    1234_flag1.psd
    1234_flag1.jpg
    What I am seeking is the above source to be converted to jpeg and
    placed onto another dirve/folder/directory with the SAME directory
    tree. It should look like:
    Another Drive/folder/directory etc (destination)
    |
    |
    1234_flag_images
    2345_ball_images
    3456_table_images
    etc
    In the directory 1234_flag_images contains
    1234_flag1.jpg
    1234_flag2.jpg
    1234_flag3.jpg
    WIP <---directory Work in Progress contains
    1234_flag1.psd
    1234_flag1.jpg
    Make sense?
    Isn't there anything out there to handle multiple
    (read 100s) of folders/directories and make a conversion as stated
    above?
    Thanks again,

  • Camera Raw Preferences- Tiff / JPEG Handling -CS 3

    In the Camera Raw Preferences > JPEG + Tiff Handling Section I have " Always open TIFF/JPEG Files with Settings Using Camera Raw" UNCHECKED. Yet, when I double-click on an image in Bridge to open it, it opens the Raw window. I want the image to open directly in Photoshop. What do I need to do?

    There are other preferences to be UNchecked. Carefully examine Camera Raw prefs, Bridge prefs and Photoshop prefs.
    Then relaunch Bridge and Photoshop.

  • TIFF/JPEG storage format

    Cheers,
    Using TIFF/JPEG-12 (Photoshop CS3/CS4) for long term image storage format  - are there any cons? Images will be in both RGB/CMYK/gray tagged/untagged and subsequently used in printed advertisements (layouted using InDesign)  - high image fidelity is not the goal.
    Thanks.
    Best wishes,
    Rasmus Olsen

    Gentlemen, allow me to explain:
    I have a partner with somewhat low bandwidth. This partner will receive images with layers/transparency and return images with layers/transparency. I started with lossless formats like PSD and TIFF/ZIP, but this takes way to long to upload/download. TIFF/JPEG seems to be the only feasible way to solve this. Besides, preliminary tests show no visible difference when comparing highres JPEG with PSD on printed paper.
    When I wrote cons I wasn't thinking of image quality degradation (JPEG is a lossy format - I allready know that). Obviously TIFF/JPEG is supported by Adobe and InDesign, but are there be any compatability issues regarding for instance TIFF/JPEG-embedded ICC's? Any possible trouble with TIFF transparency? Etc?
    BTW When working with advertisements you will inevitable receive untagged material. Later in the workflow these images will have a profile assigned.
    Best wishes,
    Rasmus Olsen

  • Tiff to jpeg conversion question

    Need help.  I created a .tif file by scanning an image using VueScan software.  It is rather large, too large to send via email.  I opened it in PSE 9 and tried to save it as a jpeg in order to make it a small enough file to email.  When I do a "save as", PSE 9 does not give me the option of saving as jpeg.  Any suggestions?  I need the large tiff file for archiving purposes, so I am working with a duplicate.
    Robert

      Possibly the tiff is 16 bit.
    In Full Edit click Image à Mode à 8 Bit/channel
    Then save as jpeg.

    In Full Edit click Image à Mode à 8 Bit/channel

  • Suspected bug with RAW  to jpeg conversion

    When clicking done on a RAW image (or double clicking it) in iphoto, why is it that sometimes it works and other times it doesn't?
    It seems to work if you make changes to the image but if you merely want to turn it into a jpeg so that you can export it to something like flickr it doesn't seem to work.
    This means when I drag my images to flickr export it only accepts jpegs so half my album is not publishable to the web - or viewable by anything outside of iphoto.
    Any suggestions?

    This is the adjustments in "Basic" and "Detail" including the "Before RAW"
    After that I hit "Open Image" and then saved it without further adjustments as JPEG, Quality 10. The result of the JPEG when I open it from the Photoshop Organizer is this which I find very noisy.
    The disturbing part though is, that the JPEG looks as follows when I search for the JEPG file itself and open it through Picasa viewer. It has way fewer image noise I think.

  • Any format to jpeg conversion algorithm required

    Hello,
    Can anybody help me out in finding image conversion algorithms for converting images from bmp to jpg, tiff to jpg, png to jpg, gif to jpg etc.

    look up the JAI (Java Advanced Imaging), once you load a file, you can save it back as any type that is supported--including JPEG.

  • TIFF & JPEG renders of RAW files appear different when viewed in Bridge

    I am working with the demo of Photoshop CS6, with ACR 7.1. CS6 System Info will appear at the bottom of this post. Summary: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T, 16GB RAM, Win7-64bit, nVidia GTX 460 video w/1GB RAM, approx. 2.5 TB free space on multiple internal physical drives, Canon 50D, CR2 files. I have a camera profile generated through Profile Editor, and the monitor is calibrated with i-1 Match.
    I have been practicing with the new Basic Panel controls (Process 2012). When I felt that I was getting the hang of them I started saving JPEG and TIFF files and noticed differences between what appears in Bridge and ACR. I worked on this for some time and searched out some other discussions in the Forum which seemed to talk about similar results. I have now tried Image Processor via Bridge, Save Image in ACR, and Open>Save manually in PS CS6. By whatever route, the TIFFs and JPEGs are different (lighter in the following examples, but this is not always the case), while PSD saves seem to be close, but not identical to the CR2 when viewed in Bridge or Photoshop. Here is a screen capture of Bridge thumbnails which show the differences.
    I hope the labels come through legibly. The two images on the second row are CR2 and PSD respectively. What is really odd to me is that when I resaved the PSD file as a TIFF, the same sort of difference shows up in the TIFF. (See _MG_7960_via_PSD.tif above.) I have uploaded the CR2, its XMP, a TIFF and a JPEG on Sendspace (107 MB). I did this earlier in my experiments and regret that the file naming is not as informative as might be.
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/t0lhko
    I have run a few other ACR adjusted CR2 images through Image Processor and seen a variety of differences between the rendered files and the RAW versions. The differences seem to be in Exposure and Contrast. Most of these looked somewhat darker, unlike the examples above.
    I will happily provide any other information on request. Thanks!

    Thanks very much for that lead, NormanPCN. I do have Auto Tone checked, though the rendered files in the example above do not have XMP sidecars. I will try unchecking Auto Tone even so, and post back when I see what happens.
    Thanks again,
    Kieren
    EDIT: Bingo! I took Auto Tone off in ACR Preferences (in Bridge) and the non-RAW files immediately regenerated thumbs and previews. They now are indistinguishable from the PSD. There is still the very slight difference which I mentioned between the PSD and the CR2. While that seems odd, it is small enough to be relatively trivial.
    Many thanks!

  • Why do the colors in images embedded in word (TIFF/JPEG) export off-color from Acrobat?

    I chose this forum as opposed to the printing and pre-press forum because I have a very limited existing knowledge of color space and profile matching and I didn't want to be (1) shunned and (2) overwhelmed by the level of technical detail.
    When I attempt to PDF a word document that contains a TIFF image, the TIFF image appears SIGNIFICANTLY off color.  I was able to substantially correct the problem by extracting the TIFF image within the Word document and resaving it as a JPEG, but it still isn't 100%.
    Here's what I know:
    I'm using Windows 7; Word 2010; and Acrobat X.  I also have Photoshop CS5.1 and InDesign CS4.
    My color SETTINGS are matched in each application to be tied to my monitor, and my monitor is set to the system default, which is a system default: :sRGBIEC61966-2.1"
    I'm using the document for professional purposes, so color matching is important to me, but I'm working with what is available to me at a nonprofit, so that means an Acer X183h monitor and a Canon iR C5185 networked office printer and no real color management policy or equipment.
    I'm looking for the best possible solution to maintain color performance between the monitor and the printer.

    Incredibly as I posted this the solution came to me - I leave it to the moderators to determine whether this should be preserved or deleted.  I wasn't able to find any help on this and it might be valuable to other users.
    The image itself that was embedded in the Word Document had a CMYK color profile. It was displaying appropriately in the software, but wouldn't convert to PDF or print. I opened the source file in Photoshop and converted it to my working profile, then re-added it to the word document and it is now reliably reproducing in the right color.
    Since dropping outside images into word is a common (if also poor) work process for people creating documents in the nonprofit sector, I think this kind of information could be valuable in the knowlegebase.

  • JAI TIFF - JPEG colour problem

    Hi all...
    I want to use JAI to convert from TIFF to JPEG. Here is my test program:
    import javax.media.jai.JAI;
    import javax.media.jai.RenderedOp;
    import java.awt.image.renderable.ParameterBlock;
    public class Test {
         public static void main( String[] args ) {
              String srcFile = args[0];
              String dstFile = args[1];
              RenderedOp op = JAI.create( "fileload", srcFile );
              ParameterBlock p = new ParameterBlock()
                        .addSource( op )
                        .add( dstFile )
                        .add( "JPEG" );
              RenderedOp saveOp = JAI.create( "filestore", p );
    }It works fine, except the colours in the output are all wrong.
    After running
    java Test NEC_LCD3000+Soundb_R.tif bad.jpg
    my output looks like
    http://xtuml.jdns.org/bad.jpg (if you can even see it. Firefox refuses to display the image. Gimp and KView can open it though, but all the colours are messed up)
    The output should look like
    http://xtuml.jdns.org/good.jpg
    The original was ripped from NEC's website:
    http://www.nec-display-solutions.com/coremedia/download/18634/LCD3000-ProductPicture-Soundbar-Side-R-TIF.zip
    I suspect it's a problem to do with Color Models or something, but I'm way out of my depth in this area.
    Can anybody suggest a solution?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    James

    Maybe this is the problem... the original image has an alpha channel. When I used the GIMP to flatten it back to RGB (with no alpha channel), JAI works fine...
    Does JAI support RGBA? Am I posting in the wrong forum? Is the whole world against me? :P
