Tiger 10.4.11 to SL...What am I up against?

I'm a bit confused. I have a MacBook running 10.4.11.
Can I even do an "upgrade" install from Tiger 10.4.11 to SL or do I need to do a "clean" install? If so, how does one go about a clean install?
How do I backup my Mail if I need to do a clean install? That is really the only thing that I'm concerned about. I can backup my iCal database and all my other data is stored in my user Documents/Music/etc. folders so backing that up isn't a problem. I have all my installers/discs for applications and software codes so that isn't worrisome either.
I've checked at the Snow Leopard Compatibility link given in a message with tips on upgrading and most of my software is ok. I'm a bit nervous about MS Office 2004 (not that 2008 looks like it would be any better) but there are other options there like iWork or OpenOffice if need be. Is Rosetta that is needed for some software to run in SL part of SL or does it need to be downloaded? Upgrading Adobe Illustrator CS2 and Quicken 2005 might be in order but we'll see what happens.
Sorry for the goofy questions but I've never upgraded a Mac before.

1. Tiger users do not need to buy the Box Set unless they want iLife '09 & iWork '09 products in addition to Snow Leopard. The OS product (the DVD & the license to use it) is the same whether bought by itself or as part of the box set.
2. The standard (& only directly provided) Snow Leopard "upgrade" install option works equally well if it is upgrading a Mac from Tiger or from Leopard.
3. The standard install option will automatically install Rosetta if the installer detects any apps on the target drive that require it. The same is true for QuickTime 7 Player if it detects a QT Pro licence in a folder on that drive. It even runs the equivalent of Disk Utility's Verify Disk step on the target drive & won't try to do the upgrade if it fails that check.
4. Apple recommends that the Repair Permissions step be done while started up from the volume with the items to repair on it. IOW, don't run Repair Permissions on the normal startup drive while booted from the installer DVD unless there is no alternative. The value of doing this repair before installing Snow Leopard is dubious anyway: the actual install (done after the Mac restarts from the DVD automatically) is done in single user (root) mode, so it really doesn't matter what the permissions are set to.
5. While the installer works well enough if you start by booting from the DVD directly, it is better to follow Apple's instructions & just double-click on the "Install Mac OS X" application icon on the DVD while started up normally. This allows that app to use the network settings on the startup drive to connect to Apple's database of incompatible items to check for updated items & if found, move them to the "Incompatible Software" folder it creates automatically if needed. If you boot directly from the DVD, only the DVD's own list of incompatible items is referenced & doesn't include the several items aded since the DVD was released.
Basically, the "Install Mac OS X" application is a pre-install preparation utility that does several different things & then causes the Mac to reboot into the the DVD's installer app, which does the actual install.

What can I do against the Identity Check from Entourage???

Looks like you may have stumped the members. Can you explain in more detail? I've used Entourage for as long as it's been out and don't remember encountering an "Identity check" issue.
    What version of Entourage? X, 2004, 2008, 2011?
Also --please modify your equipment line to correct your OS version. "iOS" is not a Mac computer operating system. It only runs of iPods, iPads and iPhones, not real computers. Do About this Mac from your Apple menu; that will show your OS version.

What has Apple got against Flash, and can anyone tell me when 4G will be available on UK Ipads please.

Flash : http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ . And as Adobe have also announced that they are stopping development on all mobile versions of flash it's unlikely to ever happen. You could try third-party browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon which 'work' on some flash-based sites, but judging by their reviews not all. Also some websites, especially news/media sites, have their own apps in the App Store.
In terms of 4G here in the UK, there aren't currently any 4G networks services available here - and I'm not sure that the auction for the 4G spectrum here has even happened yet, so it probably won't be any time soon. But I don't think that the current iPad will be able to work on the UK's 4G spectrum which is different to what is being used in the US.

  • I have a unwrapped copy of Mac OSX Tiger and i don't know what to do with it

    Hey everyone,
So i don't have a Macpowerbook and i have a copy of mac osx tiger. It was originally my mom's dad's. How ever he has passed away and my mom's mom wants us to sell the osx tiger. What should i do?

If it is a grey colored disc then it is machine specific and only useful to somebody who has the machine model for which it was made.  If it is black then it is a retail install disc.
2 years ago you could have sold a retail disc at a premium price.  Now I am not so sure.  Tiger is now 4th generation behind Lion, Snow Leopard and Leopard.  Apple stopped supporting Tiger years ago and fewer and fewer other software packages are being issued that still run on Tiger.  Firefox stopped supporting Tiger, Flash (used on just about every web site out there) is no longer being updated, etc.  I think the writing is on the wall.  One of my favorite web sites that uses Flash stopped working for me yesterday.
A machine specific disc is really handy for somebody who has that machine and completely useless to anybody who doesn't.
The best thing to do is go on e-bay and see what is actually being paid (not asked) for Tiger, remembering to make sure it matches the copy you have.  If you do decide to sell it, make sure you tell the purchaser exactly which model disc it is.  We've seen many people on here who bought a disc only to find it wouldn't install on their computer.

  • What Does Apple Have Against Panoramas?

There must be a reason for the lack of a "photo stitch" feature to create panoramas or "wide angle" composites in iPhoto and Aperture. Not even the download section of the Apple web site has such an "add in" listed for Aperture let alone iPhoto. I know there are programs available such as Photoshop and Kekus Digital available for the Mac but what is wrong with these photo tools that leaves them out of the feature sets sponsored by Apple?

I generally assume that anything an Apple program won't do is explained by the notion of the 80 Percent Solution, in which Apple advises other developers that generally it is better to skip a feature that <20% of users will want, in favor of keeping the program easy to use for the other 80% who really need the basics.
"If you try to design for the 20 percent of your target audience who are power users, your design may not be usable by the other 80 percent of users."
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/A ppleHIGuidelines/XHIGDesignProcess/XHIGDesignProcess.html
It makes me less annoyed to think that missing features are the tradeoff for ease-of-use--all I have to do is look at Photoshop, which can do everything but I find beyond un-usable, to recognize the value in this.
Although in this case, while I visit many stunningly beautiful places, and possess all the necessary tools, I have never actually bothered to set up a panorama.
Plus, of course, Patrick's excellent point that iPhoto is NOT a photo editing program.

  • Compiling kernel: what are the cons against arch kernel?

    As the title

I don't see drawbacks, only advantages.
Don't forget recompiling things that need the kernel like nvidia. That's what's been keeping me from trying it out.
It only takes a few minutes for me to install nvidia drivers to any new kernel that I make. I don't use the Arch nvidia driver, I use either the stable or beta driver offered from this page: http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606
Basically, after building my new parallel kernel I restart/reboot and then log into the new kernel from my edited GRUB list, then of course I will be greeted by my console login prompt. I log into my username, change directory to my downloaded nvidia driver and run this command:
    sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.06-pkg2.run
Then click yes and ok a few times and it builds my kernel module and also the 32libs, then it finishes in 1 minutes, then "sudo reboot -n" and now my nvidia work for my new kernel.
..... and I always have my stock -ARCH default kernel as a backup that can either use my downloaded nvidia driver or the Arch one.
What took the most time for me was learning which way to use for building a seperate kernel to install along side of my -ARCH default one. Perfecting the PKGBUILD and preset/install scripts took a bit of figuring out.
The actual compile time isn't that long, 15-25 minutes..... maybe even less? I use the "-j3" option for my MAKEFLAGS in /etc/makepkg.conf file.
The "make menuconfig" way can take anywhere from less than 1 minute to an hour..... if you read about every single thing available (which is a good learning experience even if you don't have that hardware or experience).

  • Just so we know what we're up against...

Votes please for the best or most popular web games (especially java applets) which don't need the big downloads that most people, however strongly we feel about it, just don't make.
Most of the Java stuff is sprite puzzles and retro clones - fun, often quite clever and creative, but I haven't seen one that really stands out against the others. Searching the forum, I get the impression your answer would be Tailgunner. Again, fun for a bit, but surely not the best in the world!
    Thanks,

Because... well, the clue's in the Subject line :) More reasons?
    * This forum seem a smart, creative bunch - hopefully web games programmers on the whole are. I'm curious to see if they've managed to excel without all that higher Java stuff to make life easier.
    * A yardstick to measure against - how good at this challenge do we have to be to rival the best for the world's attention?
    * When games programmers start debating favorite games, interesting discussions appear about how to make games fun and sticky.
    * How much are you limiting yourself if you still want to be accessable by the majority?
This subject seems to be a hornet's nest on this forum, but please lets not have yet another debate on that, this was meant to be a light-hearted topic to contrast all the bug-fixies!

  • What in God's name is it with Safari 4.0.3 Tiger and iTunes 9.0.1?

This concatenation of "maybe-it'll-work-THIS-time" software crudpacks has been the most time-wasting, anti-productivity experience I've had in 20 years of owning Macs. I now have iTunes 9.0.1 working, but I have no idea how I got it to happen. None of my THREE installs of iTunes 9.0.1 has included an "iTunes Media Folder," don't know why, but thank God. My latest joy has to do with the System Requirements Apple insists upon for iTunes 9.0.1 running on Tiger 10.4.11:
    iTunes 9.0.1/Safari 4.0.3 Tiger/Quicktime 7.6.4/Security Update (the latest one)
I have everything installed EXCEPT Safari 4.0.3 Tiger. Why? That's what I'm trying to find out.
FOUR times now I've downloaded -- from Apple's download site -- the dmg of Safari 4.0.3 Tiger. FOUR times I've gone through the entire install sequence with no error messages or glitches, FOUR times I've restarted to "finish installing the software, and FOUR times no Safari application or related files has shown up on my drive. Could someone explain this?

I'm terribly sorry to have taken up your valuable time, but many "Upgrades" install the entire program, whether a previous version was installed or not (just today, I upgraded Photogrid X, for which I have a license, WITHOUT a copy of the previous PhotoGridX anywhere on my drive. A miracle of modern science!). Many "Upgrades" that require a previously-installed version either tell you so in the documentation (Apple says NOTHING on their download page* about requiring a previous version of Safari), on the install splash screen, or at some point in the install process. Pretty stupid of me, but even more stupid (and arrogant) of Apple, who apparently operate on the belief that if you use a Mac, you use Safari. I loathe Safari, which has been a crippled browser from the get-go, in my opinion. In addition to that, even before the dreaded update, my example of Safari was locking up all over the place, and refusing to display, for instance, eBay photo galleries created in Vendio -- which is the image-hosting service I use. Why would I keep Safari on a limited-space notebook hard drive if I didn't use it? If Apple required it for the installation of the latest "upgrade, " why didn't they say so in their "requirements*" blurb?
No, "'FOUR times' does not count as troubleshooting facts, nor was it intended to do so. Losing a week in downtime isn't a troubleshooting fact, either, but that's hardly the point. To have a piece of software that can't install without a previous version being present, and not having a warning in the documentation, is an unnecessary waste of my time, and--I know I'm not the ONLY moron that uses a Mac -- the time of many other people.
*Apple's Safari 4.0.3 DL page REQUIREMENTS:
    Macintosh Requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 or Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Security Update 2009-002
Mac with an Intel processor or a Power PC G5, G4, or G3 processor and built-in FireWire®
    256MB of RAM
Top Sites and Cover Flow on Mac OS X Tiger require a Quartz-Extreme compatible video card.
Do YOU see anything in there about requiring a previous version of Safari to install?
Here's a deal -- next time you see a post from me, just ignore it. I'd hate for you to waste your time on a rant.
And OH YES, I realize you're volunteers here -- sometimes it's painfully obvious. Do you realize that MY time is valuable -- though obviously not nearly as valuable as yours?

  • What is the best database freeware for Tiger?

    Hello,
I try to learn to create database on my G4 running Tiger.
Anyone can tell me what is the best freeware to begin with?
Do I need to install a database server as well?
    Thank you
    Benny Lee

    Got it.
So you can scratch AppleWorks and possibly LibreOffice off your list.
If you want to make a web form, then you will need to resort to your Dreamweaver connected to any database (again, you Mac OS X already has MySQL installed, it is jsut not turned on by default.
    An important question is:
Where will you host this site?
If you are hosting it locally on your machine, you'll need to take into account the webserver (OS X uses Apache by default) and most certainly will need to deal with lousy upload network speeds, firewall, port forwarding on your router etc... I'd strongly recommend you install MAMP becuase it has some great maintenance and setup tools bundled in.
If you'd be publishing this form via some web hosting service (FatCow, GoDaddy, etc....) you'd need to make sure your service provides MySQL access on their servers and set it up.
If you really want to do this fast and already know some SQL basics and want to use rapid development tools, Oracle's ApEx is IMHO the easiest way to do that.
You can register for free @ apex.oracle.com and get 25MB of free space - all would be done via web browser, creating tables, queries, users, etc... Form would be created using their application builder tools. It would at least give you an idea what what it is capable of and if you'd like it, you could install Oracle 11g XE for free. It has a limit of using only 1 CPU, can have only 1 instance running and has a limit of some 11GB in size I think, but other than that, it is a mighty powerhouse which bundles database, webserver and front end website building tools all in one package, with no price tag.

  • Kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?

kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?
Or What Cameras are available for Macs ?
This question used to come up for Macs that did not have Internal Cameras and the User did not have an External iSight.
Since the advent of Intel Mac and the Internal iSight and OS 10.4.9 (late Tiger) the question has broadened from "What can I use with iChat ?" to "What cameras can I use with My Mac ?" and from there into the current Question this User Tip plans to answer.
On the whole it is a case of matching a camera for the type of application you are going to use it most with.
A web cam can be used in iMovie to create Email or Video Blogs although Camcorders do a better job. Camcorders can be used as web cams.
    Camera Types
These fall into three main categories that themselves have subsets.
Your choice is going to be influenced by the Applications you want to use it with.
    1) Firewire Cameras (Plug an Play)
    a) The iSight (External) made by Apple and several other similar cameras have mostly disappeared off the market. (Although iSights seem to be still doing well on Ebay - See Version and Mounts).
    b) Firewire Camcorders. These vary as to which apps that work with dues to the different Signal outputs they can do.
Apple Article TA26556 Highlights some that have issues due to their proprietary DV Format.
    2) USB 1.1 able Cameras. (Not Plug and Play)
This includes most cameras pre Vista (more on that later)
Most of these will need a suitable Mac Driver either from the Manufacturer or from one of two Generic sources (macam and IOXeperts). Some manufacturers will include a Mac Driver on the CD that comes with the camera some will supply it as a download from their Site.
It is worth while saying at this point that iChat will also need this reasonably cheap iUSBCam Utility as well.
This Utility was originally designed for getting the External iSight to work on computers less than the G3/600Mghz spec for iChat. Then it included the ability to get USB cameras to work with iChat.
You will need one of these three options listed so far if you are OS 10.4.8 or below or have only USB 1.1 ports/sockets on your Mac.
    3) USB 2.0 Cameras. (Plug and Play in most cases)
    a) Those that are UVC (USB Video Class) Compliant (Also listed as Vista Certified)
Apple added a UVC driver to the OS at 10.4.9 but your Mac also has to have an USB 2.0 port that you can plug such a camera into (Some keyboard ports are not USB 2.0). This means that the camera is Plug and Play although it may not have all the features it has on a PC
    b) Those that are USB 2.0 but are not Vista Certified/UVC compliant. (You are going to need Mac Drivers again)
This site about Apple Compatible cameras may be of some help.
A Note on quality of Pictures.
Firewire cameras of either sort are best with Camcorders being the best of all. (Generally more pixels delivered faster to your Computer)
The Newer USB 2.0 cameras are tending to exceed the 640 X 480 pixels that earlier USB1.1 cameras use with some currently giving 1.3Mp resolutions. It should be noted though that not all applications will use this format.
Look closely at the maximum Frame rate (fps) a camera can produce. You may not get it is every applications but something that starts with a max of 15fps is going to give you no leeway.
    Applications
You may get some more insight into what to go for by asking in one of these forums:-

Versions and Mounts Which Version Am I Buying ?
First off I will not say so much on Buying a second hand External iSight other than making sure you use a reputable Selling site or an Individual Seller so that you have recourse if the device turns out to be faulty. Try and get to see the camera working if you can, preferably seeing it plugged in and working or by iChat and seeing the Pic it produces (Get the person to show you live Screen shots (or Screen Share in Leopard/iChat 4) of System Preferences > Sound > Input as the iSight will be listed)
What I will list here is info about the different versions.
There were three versions before the External iSight was discontinued. There is little outward differences as the main change is the mounts that are included with each version. They all function the same way.
The versions are distinguished by letters (Revision A, B or C) in addition to the base part number and an added slash (M8817LL/).The Last model included different mounts for Laptops, Desktop Stand, Magnetic mount and one for a Flat Panel iMac (the Lampshade one). See pictures in this PDF on page 6.
Apple no Longer sell the External iSight or the Apple M9314G/B iSight Accessory Kit either but you may find it at other places as well if the mount you want/need does not come with the camera. Pics of Box and Contents
It appears that individual iSight mounts and other items can be purchased though this iSight Service FAQ page
Remember the youngest External iSight is likely to be at least 4 years old. Current anecdotal information suggests the cost of an Apple Repair to a faulty External iSight exceeds the cost of a USB Replacement (Or the value in real terms, of the camera itself - although higher prices seem to be quoted on Ebay and Amazon)

  • Can I upgrade to Tiger on my iBook G4 with a PowerMac G4 Install Disk?

I am currently running Mac OSX 10.3.9 Panther on my iBook G4 and I want to upgrade to Tiger OSX 10.4. I could possibly upgrade to Leopard, but it may be too much for my system according to Apple's website.
My father purchased a used copy of Mac OS 10.4 Tiger from eBay and the person told him that it was an original base version of Tiger and would run on any Mac. But when the disk arrived it says that it is for a "PowerMac G4 Software Install and Restore Disk 1 of 1". So I am not sure if this is only designed for the PowerMac desktop computer, or if it can be used safely and 100% compatible on my iBook G4 laptop.
I took my laptop to the Apple Store and asked the Genius Bar techs who told me that the "firmware" is different on the PowerMac than on my iBook and the disk that I was sent was only for the PowerMac.
When I read the "read-me" file on the disk, it did not indicate that it was only for a PowerMac only or whether it would work fine on any Mac computer or laptop. So my main question is this: Will this disk work and be compatible with my iBook G4, or was it designed only for the PowerMac?
Has anyone had any problems with compatibility on an iBook if they used a different computer's OSX 10.4 Tiger install disk?
If there are problems, where can I find a generic in-the-box version of Tiger or an iBook specific version of Tiger?
If I install a "used" original version of Tiger am I still eligible for all of the software updates from Apple for OSX 10.4, just like I have been with my current OSX 10.3 Panther?
    Thank you for your help!

    Aaron:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Computer specific install disks are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and even if you manage to install it without incident, you may end up having issues post installation.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger.
Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from AllMac or FastMac. You can also purchase Tiger on eBay if you know what you are looking for. Read all documentation carefully, ask questions of the seller to be sure that you are getting the Full Retail Version. Here are some current offerings on eBay.
    Good luck.

  • Panther or Tiger for a PB G4?

I am installing a new HD in my PB-G4 and I am considering running it with Panther instead of Tiger. This is because while recently using Tiger and running CPU intensive activities (videos or in Safari), the computer would get very hot, the fans would run at high speed and ultimately the computer would go to sleep. I assume that Tiger demands more power from the CPU than Panther and that the PB should run cooler with Panther (is this correct or am I dead wrong?). Or is it possible that my failing HD was making my PB get hot? If this is a possibility, I would go to Tiger...
I only use this PB top check my email, surf through the internet, so Panther should suffice.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
    Interesting question!
I have a G4-15", came with Panther... still has it. Runs around 132-144 degree's on the CPU with my activity. My daughter has a G4-12", came with Tiger...still has it. Hers runs around 135-145 degrees with her normal use. She brings it over to use my high-speed and I play around with it. Both are original equipment plus all the updates Apple has offered and the temp difference is marginal. Her's is a plastic case, mine is aluminum... one may remove heat better then the other but they seem pretty equal. I have 1.5 G Memory (use 300-500 normally), her's has the original 512 Meg and uses about 300-400 normally, she shut's hers off more often and the memory use comes back down, I leave mine on (in sleep) more often, and the mem use keeps going up slowly, until I shut it down.
We both are looking to upgrade to Leopard when it comes out... Apple has some slick software and uses memory a lot less intensely then Microsoft does. Leopard should be no different, only better.
And, yes, I have not upgraded to Tiger because Panther does suffice for what I do with this machine. But even Tiger has some neat things I do not, but, do not need now either. Leopard has the time machine (which I am doing manualy now with my software updates, in case the new one has a problem I can back-up one notch) which does the same thing in auto.
    It's your PB... Enjoy it.
