Tiger install not needed?

I have OS X 2.8, but needed MPEG-2 for some dvd work and it's not in 2.8, but is on Tiger, so I bought Tiger but looked at the install procedure which is pretty massive and I really don't want to disturb my FCP files, etc. So I'm wondering if all I really need is to get MPEG-2 on it's own and just keep 2.8 for now as it works fine for my purposes. Also not sure if there's any issues upgrading from 2.8 to Tiger? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

thanks, that's what it seems like, I haven't opened Tiger so can return it to Amazon for full refund, but I'll wait till I try it with my OSX 2.8 and mpeg-2 download to see if it works. I don't particularly like Streamclip as it's hard to figure out how to use and there's no support as it's free.

I, too have the same problem with Windows 8.1, only it's 12 updates, not 11.
The following will not install (It says they were installed.  It also says they were "not needed")

The update settings were set to automatically install, but I changed them to download automatically and install manually, and deleted the SoftwareDistrubution/Download folder contents to re-download the updates.
They don't re-download.
The log says the last updates were installed 1/24/2015 (which should be correct), and no new updates have been installed for this cycle.
Windows Update is running correctly.  This is the only Win 8.1 machine in the network with this issue (Mixed OS network with about 8 Win 8.1 machines).  All other Win 8 machines have installed THESE UPDATES successfully.  There are no known
differences in configuration between them.

• Tiger install not recognizing hard drive

G3 desktop/400MHz/512 MB RAM/20 GB Western Digital EIDE HD/ OS X 10.4 retail install DVD.
My friend gave me the aforementioned Mac, minus the HD which he kept, but with the 10.4 install disk. The computer was working fine before.
I had a blank NTFS-formatted HD to use in it, and from reading Mac forums I knew the Mac wouldn't recognize it, so I used a PC to format it in FAT32 before the install.
Install Steps:
1. Booted, holding down the C key.
2. Selected English as the language, but didn't click Continue.
3. Went straight to Disk Utility, and the only drive it shows is the DVD drive
and the DVD itself. System Profiler shows everything but the HD.
While installing the OS I reached the "Select a Destination Volume" step, and the HD is not listed. The "Options" button is greyed out as well.
I went to the Terminal option and typed in "df -k" as a friend suggested, then went back to the "Select a Destination Volume" step, but the drive is still not listed.
Thinking it could be the drive (which was Windows-formatted and found zero errors on) I popped in another drive, with the same results. I also replaced the IDE cable, to no avail.
All cables are seated properly and the HD is receiving power.
This is my first Mac since 8.1 and I had planned on using this one to refamiliarize myself with the platform before buying a high-end model, so I'm pretty much flying blind here.
Any ideas on how to get the HD recognized?

Okay, a bunch of things.
The Blue & White model comes in different flavors. The Rev. 1 is very conservative about hard drives it will accept. I believe it was known as the "Heartbreaker"

If the drive isn't being seen at all then that's something fundamental since even a Windows drive should be seen in Disk Utility. Are the jumpers set correctly on the drive? You might need to take this particular question over to the hardware forum.

• Tiger install workaround needed

I want to install Tiger on Laptop but the Install Discs are not working - I have read that is because the Install Discs are not retail
I am therfore considering a work around option - using an iMac hooked up to the Laptop and running the installation using Pacifist
My question is this though - Will the OS still function on a Powerbook - I don't see why the OS should be any different for a Laptop or an iMac
Has anyone any warnings or advice on this issue
Are there any known issues on this subject

It is possible to find used Tiger retail discs. Yes maybe but I have always - and will continue to always buy direct from the source or not at all. I do not trust resellers who are dubious and not authorized. When I find websites that claim to be official Adobe Resllers of CS5 I am not tempted to buy from them because they are generaly 100% fake frauds and thus need to be avoided.
ask us to help you break the law - That's just not true is it : ) I never made such a request and since Apple claim they have no involvement in these forums as they are meant for user to user discussions I deem Apple to be irrelevant in such discussions. I am not asking Apple Employees or Reps. I was asking for help and advice from other users. I needed help and workarounds to get Logic Studio working since the install discs created problems. Other users helped me with that and I used Pacifist to repair the installation, that is not illegal and from that I was able to help other users who encountered that same problem. This issue is exactly the same thing.
circumventing protection Apple has put in place to protects its products - it no longer offers this product so there is nothing for it to protect anymore - Apple deem the products to be obsolete, no longer supported, apple do not care about these products - they are effectively dead and buried as far as they are concerned.
Secondly, it is turning into a topic discussing Apple policies and practices which is also in violation of the TOU. WhichSir is the direction that you chose to take the topic and I have politely responded - I merely could not understand why the discs would not install and wanted to know how I could solve the issue, that is why I asked other users for advice.
justify breaking the law - I did not justify breaking laws - I merely pointed out a little Irony about the matter which was meant to be light hearted but let's remember Apple did make the admission that they had been guilty as charged and that is a fact. The point is that if I could buy the discs from Apple then I would but I can't and so . . . rather than throw away an expensive machine I merely wanted to find a way to keep it useful and working effectively and that's just common sense basics.
Even if you stole from a thief, you would be a thief too - Well I can assure you I have never stolen anything from anyone and that's just a hypothetical event you chose to use to insult me and that's just a cheap shot.
And it's not their fault, it's yours for buying equipment before you investigated the limitations to what you could do with it and how. You Sir are so wrong. Apple choose to support or not support, to sell or not to sell, to enable use or destroy it and in this case, they decided to make the OS unavailable and they chose to ditch PPC and hence kill off these products. No one asked Apple to drop support, they do so to maximize profits just like any other business does and they are well within their rights to do so.
When we buy Apple products we never know how long they will be supported and none of us know what Apple plan to be doing next. I did not know that Apples Mirror Agent would cause my iMac Hard Drive to crash and burn at great cost and expense to myself and nor did I expect to pay £800 for a Lab Data Recovery bill but that happened. Apple denied all blame and treated me with utter contempt and I did not know that would happen either but it did. When I subscribed to MobileMe I never knew it would never operate as it should and I never predicted that I was just going to be wasting my money for services not supllied but that happened. I never knew that some of Logics features would fail when I purchased the Studio but they did and yes, I had to live with that failure like many others do.
Also you assume knowledge that I bought the Powerbook and you are wrong on that count as well. It was a gift for which I was grateful, regardless of its limitations Sir.
It honestly wouldn't surpise me if this whole topic got taken down - Fine, let it be, no one would care anyway and if that's the case then no further discussion is needed or neccessary.

• To install Tiger, some Macs need internal DVD drive, or CD version of Tiger

Some Macs while they have Firewire, don't support Target Disk Mode, nor Firewire booting. These Macs if they came with no DVD drive, and only a CD drive or CD-RW drive (as opposed to combo or superdrive), can only install Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) if you:
1. Install a compatible internal DVD drive from which supports http://www.patchburn.de/ or other firmware that supports Mac OS X booting.
2. Find the original retail CD version of Mac OS X 10.4 that was available for a limited time called the Media Exchange Program CD.
These Macs include the Blue and White G3 desktop (non-iMac), and the PCI PowerMac G4 described below:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
The iMac G3 with built-in Firewire, iBook G3 with built-in Firewire, and AGP PowerMac G4 with built-in Firewire at least support Firewire booting and Target Disk Mode which would allow them to use an external optical DVD drive that supports Mac OS X booting.
If they didn't have an internal DVD drive.
Port #4 in this image below is a Firewire port:
Notes: Macs released on or after April 26, 2005 need to install Tiger from the discs that came with them, or a newer retail release except Intel Macs. Retail release of Tiger is a black disc with a white X logo and does not say Upgrade or Update.
Intel Macs could only install Tiger from the discs that came with them.
Macs released on or after October 26, 2007 can't install Tiger.

What happens if the firmware isn't updated?
The display may stop working, even for OS 9. It is not easy to fix.
I just installed 10.2 on one of them and it seems to be working. Should I uninstall it and upgrade the firmware and start over?
Check the "Boot ROM version" with System profiler. If the firmware is updated it will be 4.1.9
It is not necessary to remove OSX to install the updates if OS 9 is still on the hard drive. If not, and the OS 9 drivers are there, OS 9 can be installed without affecting OSX.
The update won't install if it is not needed.

• I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. After a few weeks the HDD failed. New Leopard install reports: "insufficient memory". I need Tiger install disks so I can install

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

• Late 2009 Mac Mini EFI 2.1 Firmware update not needed/already factory installed?

Here has been my issue of trying to figure out if Mac Mini can handle (and fully use) 8GB of RAM with my current EFI version.
I want to upgrade to 8GB on a LATE 2009 Mac Mini that currently has Boot ROM MM31.00AD.B00 and was told to update with EFI Firmware update 2.1 but it does not install saying "This update is not needed on this machine".
I found various contradicting posts saying that I need my Boot ROM to be MM31.0081.B06 or my machine won't utilize the 8GB fully
and will slow down in performance and/or crash after the Apple recommended 4GB.
But here's what I found interesting. Some users have mentioned that the Late 2009 Mac Mini's shipped with updated firmware and don't need this update but could not find a concrete answer as to yes it did ship with it or not.
Apple doesn't even list a Late 2009 Mac Mini as needing a Firmware update in this list of Firmware updates:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 . Should I just assume that my machine shipped with said update and is capeable of the 8GB? I use this for Logic Pro 9 as a somewhat portable workstation that I can take with me so maxing out the RAM would be ideal for me.
Any help or clarification would be greatly apprishiated,
Nelson

Actually a Late 2009 can take 8GB of RAM and only the Early 2009 needs the EFI update.

I cannot answer regarding compatibility, but there is no download available for PSE6 if you would need one for this.  You might be able to copy the installation files from a disk to some other removable media that the machine accepts.  Upgrading to PSE7 would not be possible mainly because Adobe does not sell older versions of their software.

• You may not need to install the Run Time Engine...

I know this has been mentioned before, but after a long search of the archives, I couldn't find the right person to give credit to - sorry!
If you have a simple exe, you may not need to install the runtime engine on the target machine at all - all you need to do is include some of the engine's files with the exe for it to work. Try it out: copy the following files & folders into the folder containing your exe:
..\National Instruments\shared\nicontdt.dll
..\National Instruments\shared\nicont.dll
..\National Instruments\shared\LabVIEW Run-Time\your_version\everything (including all sub-directories)
so, using 6.1 as an example, you exe's directory would like something like:
..\AppDirectory\MyApp.exe
..\AppDirectory\MyApp.ini
..\AppDirectory\My_Apps_DLLs,if_any
..\AppDirectory\nicontdt.dll
..\AppDirectory\nicont.dll
..\AppDirectory\lvapp.rsc
..\AppDirectory\lvjpeg.dll
..\AppDirectory\lvpng.dll
..\AppDirectory\lvrt.dll
..\AppDirectory\mesa.dll
..\AppDirectory\serpdrv
..\AppDirectory\models\heaps_of_stuff_in_here
..\AppDirectory\errors\more_stuff_in_here
..\AppDirectory\script\and_some_bits_in_here_too
Take all of this data to a machine without LabVIEW or the runtime installed, and try to run the exe - all going well, it will execute without any problems. This exe distribution method can be really useful, especially when distributing autorun presentations on CD-ROMs.

Yes, this method is not supported. However, this method is good if you wish to write your own installer for a LabVIEW Application. (Note: The method above does not install DataSocket, NI-Reports, or any of the 3D Graph controls.)
I would still suggest running the LabVIEW Run-time Engine installer so that more than one application can use it.

There is a bug in SL. Rosetta sometimes asks to be installed although it is not needed (e.g. for running Flex Builder 3). Hit no and the stuff will work anyway.

Are you actually installing these apps by dragging their icons onto the Applications folder alias (at the bottom of the window in this example) or are you just dragging the .dmgs you've downloaded into your Applications folder and launching the apps by double-clicking on the icons in the .dmg files you've downloaded? If the latter, then that's your problem.

• Itunes install wizard launching when not needed.

Hello,
I have the latest version of Itunes successfully loaded on my windows XP laptop. I recently needed to use the USB port that I keep my IPOD plugged into for a USB thumb drive. Now when I connect my IPOD to my laptop the install wizard pops up. When I click cancel ITunes successfully launches. How can I get this wizard to stop poping up as I do not need it?
Thanks.
Burke D.

I am a PC Tech and had a customer with this issue. Ran across this post in my search and ended up finding the solution on my own. The problem isn't with the iTunes software but the installer for the GEARAspi drivers. Really the issues is with the file type asssociations in the windows registry. On the system I was working on the HKCR key for .exe should point to the exefile key but pointed to nothing. To fix it create a new txt document and paste the following in (only paste what is in between the

tags):
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"
Now change the extension from .txt to .reg. Then right click and select merge. iTunes should now install properly.
