TIme Capsule can't find backup disk!!!!

Just installed a new Airport Extreme.
My wifi is working normally.
But, I cannot "see" the Time Capsule as backup disk.
Everytime I try to start the backup, It tells me to configure a new Time Capsule.
Tryed to reset and everytihing, but nothing so far.
Need help.
Tks

I don't follow ..
Just installed a new Airport Extreme.
Do you have a time capsule.. ?? Extreme and Time Capsule are different units.
There is no hard disk in a AE. You can use a USB on the current Gen6 AE for TM backups but none of the previous generation are actually reliable doing TM backups.
Everytime I try to start the backup, It tells me to configure a new Time Capsule.
Again because you do not have a Time Capsule if you are using an Airport Extreme.

  • Time Capsule can't find it's own hard disk every week and a half

I purchased the 2 teirabyte Time Capsle and received it in the mail around the 5th of this month.  Aproximately every 11 days or so, Time Capsle can't find its own hard drive.  I have to keep going into the Airport utility and manually selecting it.  I thought this was suposed to be automatic?
    My set up:
Time Capsle is the only wireless router in my house.
Backups are set to be done to Time Capsle only
I have an external hard drive attached containing movies and things on it so i can access them wirelessly.
The network itself is password protected.
I do not understand why it is easier to backup to an external hard drive then to Time Capsle.

Because the TC and Mountain Lion is buggy.. 11 days is great.. loads of people have to do it every day.
ML has the network ability of tin cans with wet string.. every now and then the string snaps and you have to rejoin it.. ie reboot everything.

  • Having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

Usually a simple reboot will work.. Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough.. Restart the whole network from off.
Mountain Lion and to a lesser extent Lion.. have network issues and lose track of the TC.

  • I am getting a time capsule error that the backup disk image can be accessed (error -1) - what does this mean?

When my time capsule tries to perform a back-up - i get the following error message.
The backup disk image "/volumes/data/myname's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be acccessed (error-1).
Is this something that can be resolved or is time capsule dead?

That error is caused by different reasons. Have a look at this Pondini's page > http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html

  • Time capsule stuck on making backup disk available

I read the tread below that should fix this issue:
"What I did was start up disk utility and use it's repair feature on the bundle. The first time, I got an error saying it could not be repaired, but I tried again a couple days later and it seems to have worked.
    How to:
    1. Disk utility it in the Utilities folder in Applications or use spotlight to find it.
    2. You want to repair the sparsebundle that is on the time capsule or external drive. It's at the top level and named something like Liz M's MacBook_123456789abc.sparsebundle.
    3. If it doesn't show up on the list in Disk Utility, use Finder to find it and then drag it into the list in the bottom half of the pane.
    4. To run the repair, clicke the sparsebundle and then the "Repair Disk" button.
    5. The first time I tried, it didn't take long but did repair some key things. The second time, it took 9 hours! But it completed and looks good.
    6. If you get an error that it's in use, go to Airport Utility and:
    - click on the time capsule on the left
    - click "Manual Setup" at the bottom
    - click disks icon at the top
    - if anyone else is backing up to the time capsule right then (or using the disk for anything else), wait for their backup to finish
    - click "Disconnect All Users" at the bottom
    - retry the repair disk and it should work; if someone else does backups to the same time capsule, they can continue while you're repairing though it might be slow.
My backups seem to be working just fine now. I have noticed that if you have the sparsebundle mounted in Finder, Time Machine seems to have trouble starting up, so eject it before starting a Time Machine backup.Hope this helps! I typed this on my iPhone which is a bit tedious. And nearly impossible to proofread. So, take care following these instructions and post here if you find a mistake. Thanks. "
My issue is that I can not seem to locate the sparsebundle as stated. In my Disk Utility only my 640G Hitachi hard drive and my DVD reader are listed. Time capsule is ethernet wired with green light on back. Green light on front and the signal dies work but it does not appear to be reading the drive. I turned it off and back on, it did show up as an available drive in system preferences and is switched on but then the System preferences shows "not responding" immediately after trying to open time machine preferences up.
Software up to date, hard drive permissions repaired, stuck.

oh i already did that. Im working on my imac and looking into this on my macbook. Was able to reproduce the issue again by trying to open TM. Locked out the finder again and had to restart. I checked the serial number and it was an early 2009 purchase with no coverage.
If you bought a Mac and got AppleCare with it, within 2 years of buying the TC, the TC is covered, too.
I have to admit that this $500 unit was the first to apparently junk out. The western digital that had my main data on that is my daily external that I store about 2TB of data on is still perfect and the new technology TM appears to already be cashed. Love the computers, not to big of a fan on the externals of the apple TV's. No life expectancy. Neither here nor there.
suggestions before I either get this looked at or scrap the HD on it and move forward.?
Reset the TC. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If all else fails, take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location, they may be able to determine whether the disk is dead.
If it is, they might replace the TC for you. If not, they won't repair it, but if the electronics are ok, you can replace the HD yourself, if you want to. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542983

  • Time Capsule can't find AirPort

    Hi there,
I have just got an airport to back up my Mac OS 10.6.8 and have successfully connected it to the WiFi, and it is seen through ststem preferences but I want to use it as a back up tool too and when I go through Time Machine it can't find the device - any help would be great!

It's A1470, air port time capsule 802.11 ac.
Bit worried that it's not safe or time machine as that is the exact reason I bought it and was recommended it in the apple store?!
That is fine.. it is just you posted airport, not Time Capsule.. and what most people mean by airport is the extreme.
    Next problem..
The TC must not be properly setup. Indeed it is not possible to setup an AC model TC or AE using 10.6.8 OS so please tell us how you set it up.
I have just got an airport to back up my Mac OS 10.6.8 and have successfully connected it to the WiFi
How?? The 5.6 utility in SL cannot do it.
Are you using an iphone/ipad with the latest airport utility.
Once setup the older OS should be able to use it.. but it cannot do the setup.
Let me suggest you give us more details.
A few screenshots helps no end.
What are you seeing in the finder and airport utility?
Does the TC show up in Finder?
You said you can see it in system preferences.. sorry but I am not sure how.. please screenshot that as well.
As a setup method.. if you really have joined the TC to the existing wifi (unless it is an apple router) that is the worst possible seutp.
Please plug the TC WAN port into the main router LAN port by ethernet.
Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Time Capsule can't complete backup

I have been using a Time Capsule to hold files for multiple computers in my office to access. The Time Capsule randomly one day stopped backing up and I am now getting this error: "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "TimeCapsule". The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/MyMac.sparsebundle" could not be created (error (null))."
I have tried the tutorials on http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html (renaming everything like it says for this error, deleting the .plist file, etc) but nothing has fixed my problem.
I am also having a strange issue where files that were created and saved to the Time Capsule while backups haven't been working (Since the end of August supposedly) will flicker in their folder and appear as a blank paper icon. They were working yesterday perfectly fine, but now it tells me "Application cannot be found" if I am quick enough to click on them before they disappear again.

Ok.. this is where you need to make a decision.. do you wipe and start over.. or do you try just a delete of the old backup and see if the Mac and start over doing a backup.
This is not an unusual problem.. So let me just run through the list to make sure you have everything as right as possible.. if none of it works you really have no choice but to wipe and start over.
    1. Factory reset the TC and do the setup again. (sorry if you have already done this.. but it is standard procedure when the thing corrupts itself).
No files are lost doing this. BUT Apple now says you should use names, less than 27 characters, no spaces. Pondini is more explicit.. 25 characters no spaces pure alphanumeric. I will be even more specific.. since Mavericks is using SMB networking by default. Use names that are really short.. max 20 characters.. less than 10 even better. So TCgenx as base station name. X being actual Gen of the TC.. wireless name, TCwifi. Keep the wireless password to 10-20 character pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
    2. IPv6 is now essential and should be set to link-local only in the computer.. whether wireless or ethernet set both if used to that setting.. eg wireless.
    3. Manually mount the TC in the computer using Finder, Go/Connect to Server.
AFP://TCgenx.local (replace with the name you used.. local is default domain you cannot really change so it should be correct).
    or
AFP://10.0.1.1 (If the TC is setup as router or with static IP.. which is always better btw, even if the TC is bridged, then use IP address.. it fixes the name problem).
The disk will be discovered and you will be asked for the disk password.. apply that and don't forget to save in the keychain.
    4. Redo the setup of the TM.. using the new TC name as the target. Don't worry if it says it is going to create a new backup, once it starts and finds the backup it will do a normal incremental.
    5. No luck with the above.. do a verify of the backup (A5 in Pondini troubleshooting).
    6. Still no luck.. wipe the backup for your computer and start over with a new backup.
    Q12 here http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
But if you are backing up several computers make sure you delete the right sparsebundle.
When you do a clean fresh backup .. use ethernet.. wireless off.. this ensures the first backup at least is as good as possible. Wireless is dodgy.
None of this will totally guarantee success.. but it has good chance.. if it fails.. as with Mavericks TM is not wholly reliable. I recommend you buy Carbon Copy Cloner.. and USB drive and plug it into your computer and make a bootable clone. Once you have seen bootable clones in operation.. ie the internal disk dies.. plug in the USB and select it as boot drive.. and you are back to whenever the backup was done.. you will consider TM great for incremental backups and stick to clones for getting operational again.

  • HT3275 I am received an error on my Time Capsule   which states the backup disk image  "Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro. sparse bundle? is already in use.  so time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsule - any suggestion

I've received an error message    Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule,   the backup disk image  /Volumes/Date/....MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it?

I've got mine working again by deleting a partial backup that was on the Time Capsule.
I mounted the backup sparsebundle, and then browsed the content and found a filestucture named <timstamp>.inProgress. I removed that and the followed the tip to disconnect described above. That did the trick for me.

  • Time Capsule can't find data

    Hi
I recently moved house and with it my time capsule, the problem is I can no longer find the data I held on my Time Capsules hard drive (primarily Movies and Photos). It's a 1TB TC, showing free space of 57GB so I believe the data is there but I just can't see it.
Previously I would just go to Finder > Time Capsule > Data and it was there, the same folder exists now but it appears to be empty.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Turn on the guest account..
Make sure you connect by ethernet..
Press reset and try the setup again.
Reset will not delete files.. you have to deliberately erase them.

  • Time Machine cannot find Time Capsule after turning auto backups off

2010 macbook 7,1 OSX 10.6.8.  Brand new rev.4 Time Capsule 2TB (MD032LL/A) just bought yesterday.
Everything set up just fine and wireless is working.  Backups are working.
Issue is that as soon as I turn the Time Machine slider to Off (I can turn it back to On at this point, doesn't matter once it's been in the Off position) in TIme Machine preferences, then try and Enter Time Machine or do a backup, it cannot find the Time Capsule (says cannot find backup volume or such).  I have to reselect the drive even though it's icon is showing right on the preferences screen.  A reboot will enable it to find the Time Capsule without my input.
If I leave Time Machine turned on, the backups run fine and I can enter the Time Machine.  It is turning off Time Machine that triggers the issue.
    Tried the following:
      -Rebooted Time Capsule
-Made sure Time Capsule name is less than 27 characters (it is 19)
      -Firewall is off
      -Filevaullt is off
      -Booted into Safe Mode
      -Repaired permissions
      -Trashed TIme Machine plist
      -Updated OSX
At this point I called Applecare and they had me send them a capture of my TIme Machine data and will get back to me Monday.
Oddly, my 10.5.8 iMac G5 2ghz is working fine with Time Machine and does not have this issue.  I can turn Time Machine off and on all I want and it can find the Time Capsule with no problem.
    Thanks for any help.

Apple is still working on the issue but I have now noticed that I cannot VNC into my work PC anymore.  I get a "Could not connect to server, connection refused:5900"
I am using Chicken of the VNC and it worked fine until I got the Time Capsule.  I know that 5900 is the port used for something and this sounds like it is related to the Time Capsule.
I can't help but think this is also related to the "Cannot find backup disk" message from Time Machine.  This all sounds like the Time Capsule goofed up the works here.
Also, I now have tons of reports in the console of it not being able to count items in a file at system/library/StartupItems.  That folder is NOT there. Which is why I assume the errors.  I have seen a few other reports and people are just restoring the file from Time Machine or making it via command line with admin.  When I go back far enough in Time Machine, the file IS there but has nothing in it.
I asked Apple about that too and they checked a 10.6.8 computer and it had the file so not sure what is up there.  Not sure if it was 10.6.8 update or the bunch of iTunes, etc that I did after that.
Have not restored that file yet, will wait to see what they say about the Time Capsule mess.
Any ideas on restoring my VNC connection?

  • Time Capsule "can't be found" as a hard disk in Snow Leopard

I've had a Time Capsule for a year and a half. No problems until I installed Snow Leopard.
Time Machine seems to work fine, my backups proceed regularly, but if I try to actually mount the hard disk and upload or download files from the drive, I can't. The path "My Computer/Network/Time Capsule" shows up in a Finder window, but when I click on the icon for the Time Capsule drive, it says "The alias 'My Time Capsule' can't be opened because the original item can't be found." I can "Delete Alias", "Fix Alias..." or "OK".
Clicking on Fix Alias leads to the file selector dialog box. If I select the drive, it claims that it is already connected. So the only available option in the dialog box is "cancel".
Clicking on Delete Alias gives the error message "The item 'My Time Capsule' can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted."
Clicking on OK, naturally, accomplishes nothing.
I tried going to Disk Utility and repairing disk permissions and rebooting. Nada.
I tried connecting directly to the Time Capsule via ethernet. Didn't make a difference.
    Help!!!

I'm having the same problem. Internet connection is fine; backups work correctly. But I get a message telling me there's an update I should install for Time Capsule, and when I click to install it, it tells me it can't find the hard drive.
I also can't print, although my printer driver is installed and the image of the printer appears. My printer is connected to the Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule can't be find anymore

    Hi all,
I've a Time Capsule within a shared office WiFi.
Unfortunately the office Wifi crashed & we had to set up a new one (with a new name & pw).
    My problem:
My Time Capsule can't be find anymore over the AirPort service programm. Whether by
    wifi or by ethernet.
Does anyone have an idea how I can to update the Wifi-connection in my TC?
    Thank you in advance.

This has to be reset.. you have no choice if the setup was join a wireless network, because it is completely locked out from wifi and from ethernet.
Plug into a computer by ethernet and do a full factory reset.. nothing on the hard disk is lost just the router settings.
Factory reset method.. hold in reset then power on the TC.. keep holding in reset and wait about 10sec until the front LED starts flashing rapidly.
It is much better to plug the TC into the main router by ethernet and run it in bridge mode.
