Time Capsule external HD slow after joining an existing network.

Hi all,
I have recently moved and had to reconfigure my TC accordingly. Previously my TC was connected to the internet and an external HD which hosted my iTunes music (amongst other files). After moving home, I was required to join the existing wifi so changed the configuration of my TC. Now I am unable to play music from the external HD as the performance is so slow. I'm also assuming backups will have lousy performance too as I havent yet seen evidence that a backup has successfully concluded.
The house has a netgear DGN2000 connected to ADSL. Internet access from my mac seems OK. I'm using Remote with Client Association in the configuration, adding the TC's MAC address to the netgear router.
Any ideas why disk performance has gone down so much ? I can discount iTunes as previewing photos in Finder from the same HD is also painfully so.

Hello Shogododo. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

I don't think this Netgear feature is supported by the TC. How do you have the TC configured? That is do you have it so that the option "Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network" is selected?

  • Time Capsule set up, how to join a existent wifi

The Time capsule was working, then I had to change my router  and now I'm just able to connect through Ethernet cable.
A step by step how to set up TC to joining a the existent wifi network and work wirelessly will be highly appreciated .
    Equipment:
    TC 2Tb router
    Mac mini
    Router Linksys EA 4500

It is not good to join wireless network with the TC..
I would strongly recommend reset the TC to factory.
Set it to bridge mode and plug it by ethernet into the Linksys router.
You can either turn wireless off or leave it to auto work.. but you will be able to access by either Linksys or TC wireless or ethernet.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as a backup drive on an existing network?

Sorry of this is an obvious question - but I have a WiFi network here (based on a Netgear Router) and want to be able to back up to a hard drive that's kept in another room.
(That way - if burglars steal my computer - they won't also steal all my backed-up files sitting on a hard drive next to my computer!)
1: Can I put a Time Capsule in the next room - get it to show up on my netwlrk - and back up to it?
2: Or is there a better / cheaper way to do this? Are there other hard drives you can hook up to a network? (I tried this a few years ago and the options weren't good...0
    Thanks a lot,
    - Greg

Just tried turning on the wireless in my TC - couldn't get it to connect to my router's wireless network. Status stays amber.
There have been several posts recently about people trying to get Airports/TCs to talk wirelessly to non-apple base stations and having problems.
You could always try turning off the wireless on your router and creating a new wireless network using the TC as the wireless base station. You'd have to connect the router to the TC with ethernet. Maybe you could move the router to the bedroom (or anywhere else that has a phone line, assuming that you've got an ADSL modem/router.

  • Mountain lion and time capsule. Extremely slow after upgrade...

After upgrading to the new system, I was trying to copy my iphoto library to my timecapsule, but at this rate, it will be completed within 20 hours... And I´m only transferring 11 gb... I also checked my connection speed to the timecapsule and it´s at 450mb... So, why is it going to take 20 hours??? This is an issue that needs to be adressed... I have the brand new Timecapsule. It´s also not doing a backup while I´m transferring...
Hoping this will be resolved immedately...

I noticed that Time Machine erased all of my previous backups and started fresh.  I woudl be willing to bet that the sluggishness you expereinced was because Time Machine was making a full backup.  It proably became more quick once it finished this since it could perform incremental backups thereafter.

  • After installing Time Capsule internet connection slow

Since I installed Time Capsule on my Mac, my internet connection started acting up. The web browsing is VERY SLOW, and applications that are web-based no longer work properly. For instance, I have an EyeFi Wireless Explore SD card and the related EyeFi Manager software that allows me to wirelessly transfer my photos on the eyefi card to the eyefi website, as well as my photo service (Kodak Gallery or Flickr) and also transfers the photos to my Mac. Before I set up my Time Capsule, the eyefi system worked flawlessly. Now the uploads hang up and do not complete. I also have very slow progress trying to use my webmail, or loading webpages in general. I use the Safari browser.
My Time Capsule is set up as a separate wireless network, so I access the internet thru my original home wireless network. Is anyone having the same issues after installing Time Capsule, and does anyone have a solution?

Try doing a Safe Mode reboot by holding down the Shift key when you hear the start-up tone. When the progress bar appears you can release the key. A Safe Reboot will clear some of the caches, it's possible one became corrupt. If that doesn't work do both a SMC and PRAM reset, you may need to do each 2-3x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Time capsule setting up problem after factory reset

What's the next step after factory reset to set up my time capsule again???
i did factory reset for 4-5 times and i cant use my time capsule to create a network, join an existing network or anything else.
i also tried normal reset but still nothing can be done.
There is always a message at the end " an unexpected error occured. Try again"

Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet..
Make sure the computer has no other network running and nothing else is plugged into the TC.. just TC Lan port to the computer ethernet.
Now press reset and open airport utility.
Generally you will have no issue once it is isolated. Do the setup and then you can disconnect and put it back in the network.
If it doesn't work, is the LED on the TC flashing amber or what??
Is the ethernet port connectivity LED on?

  • Time Capsule won't mount after upgrade to iTunes 9

See my full post in the Time Capsule support section ("Help! Time Capsule won't mount after installing iTunes 9"). My music library is on my Time Capsule, but after installing iTunes 9, it won't mount on my iMac G5. I can use the internet, but the disk won't mount. My Powerbook hasn't been updated yet and the Time Capsule mounts fine.

To make it easier, here's the post:
"My music library is on my 500 Gb Time Capsule. I just installed iTunes 9 on my iMac. It updated my library and synced my iPhone. Now, the TC won't mount. I still have internet connectivity, but I can't access my media or print to my printer connected to the TC. I can use the computer and everything, but if I hover my mouse over the TC disks menu bar icon, I get the spinning beach ball there. If I try to connect using my Network icon in the sidebar, it allows me to log in and get to the screen to select the volume I want to mount, then stops responding. In the Activity Monitor, AFP Client & AirPort Base Station Agent are not responding. I also have a Powerbook G4 w/Leopard (10.5.8) which hasn't been updated to iTunes 9 yet. The Time Capsule mounted fine on it."

  • I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing wifi network

I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing BT wifi network even though it is there with a good signal strength. The Time Capsule is connected to a Netgear router via ethernet.

You will need to start over on the setup of the Time Capsule as follows:
Disconnect any Ethernet cables that might be connected to the Time Capsule, but leave it powered on
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 8-10 seconds and release. The reset button is located next to the AC power socket.
Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Netgear to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  The Ethernet cable must remain connected at all times.
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a setting of New AirPort Base Station
    Click on Time Capsule
The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule on your screen.
That will get the setup wizard going. It will take a minute to analyze the settings, then display a screen that looks like this, except you will see a picture of the Time Capsule
Network Name..........Type in the exact name that the Netgear wireless is using
Base Station.............Type in a name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Use something short and simple. Mine is TC, for example
Password..................Type in the exact password that the Netgear wireless requires
    Verify.........................Verify the Password again
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you automatically.  When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
That's it.  Now you have one big "extended" network.  Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

  • I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage.

  • I purchased a new Time Capsule (2TB - 2013), and I would like to use my old Time Capsule to extend the range of my wireless network.

I purchased a new Time Capsule (2TB - 2013), and I would like to use my old Time Capsule to extend the range of my wireless network. I can't get them to communicate. Any ideas?

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.
I did one post with all the pictures.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24161378#24161378
If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

  • How do I get the Time Capsule to run both 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks at the same time.

How do I get the Time Capsule to run both 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks at the same time.

Thanks for digging out the facts.
You have a 1st Generation Time Capsule.
Your model can produce two bands....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....but not both simultaneously.
You would need a Generation 2, 3 or 4 Time Capsule for simultaneous dual band capability.

  • I have a 3rd party "TPLink ADSL wireless" router controlling DHCP , Now require Airport Basestation and Timecapule to merely join the existing network. I know this was a work around once posted, but can't find it again? Help....

I have a 3rd party "TPLink ADSL wireless" router controlling Internet and DHCP , Now require my (Airport Basestation and Timecapule) to merely join the existing network. I know this can be done but it was a bit of a work around the automatic setup. The autmatic setup only offers (Create new/WDS/Extend) Does anyone know how to do it, or can point me to the post.
    Many thanks

Unfortunately, I need to connect both devices (Extreme and Timecapsule) via wireless. The ADSL router is not conveniently located to allow me to cable them directly. They are both being used to drive a bank of non networkable printers and external harddrives via the USB ports on each.
My frustration with myself is I had it setup, but failed to record for future, the trick in how to unhide the "join network option". I then had a failed firmware update from Apple and then needed to reset the routers and bang the settings were gone.
The Security setting is not an issue I know those I am using WPA2 personal.
I would be grateful for the wireless setup if you have it handy...
    Thanks do much

  • Joining an existing network as a client

I've had an Airport Express for about 3 years...recently needed to reconfigure because of upgrade to my Belkin wireless router security.
I need the steps to join an existing network as a client, including providing the WPA password. I've been throught the setup guides...have gotten as far as a) connecting to the network using the Windows utility
    b) seeing the AEBS in the Airport Admin utility
....but from this point, I'm lost.
    Windows XP Home, SP2.
    Thank you.

Hello showbizkid41. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Admin Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <type in your wireless network name or select it from the pop-up menu>
    o Wireless Security: WPA Personal
o Password: <enter your wireless network security password or key>
