Time capsule newby help...

i am a complete idiot when it comes to computers...i bought a time capsule in october, 2008 and have never even taken it out of the box...until tonight...and i am at a loss...i want to add it to an existing network, i installed the cd and supposedly had the computer ready, plugged in an ethernet cable from my modem, qwest wireless pk 5000, from the ethernet 1 spot to the back of the tc in its internet WAN port...the light originally went to green, briefly, and then to amber where it was solid for a few seconds before constantly flashing amber...i have tried a reset, to no avail...my phone line is plugged into the back of the modem where i thought it was supposed to be for setting up the tc to an existing network...what am i doing wrong? any help would be greatly appreciated...

I believe that your "qwest wireless pk 5000" modem, is actually the Actiontec PK5000 wireless DSL router ... which is a combination modem/router or gateway.
With the Time Capsule (TC) connected by Ethernet, you actually have two routers in series. As such, you will want to reconfigure the TC as a bridge. This will allow the Actiontec to provide the required network services for the entire network.
To set up the TC as a bridge, either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
Internet - Internet Connection tab
o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
o Click Update to apply the new settings.

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.

Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

Mac Crashes in the middle of Time Capsule backup --HELP!

Been using time capsule for several months without any issues. In fact, it has been great until recently. A week or so ago, my MacBookPro began crashing in the middle of a time capsule back up. Just suddenly the MAC curtain comes down and tells me I must restart. When I restart I get an error message which I have copied into this message. I tried erasing a whole months worth of backups but still get the same problem........is it possible my MAC has gotten a virus?? Anyone who can help, your comments would be greatly appreciated!!!

Got this problem fixed. It seems the 10.5.3 update corrupted the update somehow. You can perform a disk image repair on the existing backup or just delete all your old back ups and start from scratch which is exactly what I did. Good luck!

Time Machine getting real-only error on 2TB Time Capsule --- Please Help

My MacPro is running 10.6.2. I bought a 2TB Time Capsule on August 1st, 2009. The TC has been running okay, but painfully slow. On Tuesday, Nov 24th, 2009, the Time Machine reported that the TC is read-only now. I've spent 5 days, including Thanksgiving Day, researching and trying to resolve this problem. To my surprise this problem goes back several years.
I have tried all the solutions without success. I cannot afford to lose the sparse bundle on TC --- it's 1.56TB in size.
My home/office LAN includes a Linksys BEFSR81 Router, 2TB Time Capsule, an iMac G5, and my MacPro. That's all there is. The router is connect to the Internet through a Comcast Cable.
The TC was configured using the Airport Utility. The password is set at the TC level. The password is also set "Guests" (something I found in my research). Wireless is turned off because I'm using an Ethernet LAN.
Now the following is very Strange!!!
(1) Click on MacPro in the side bar. The Data disk is shown with a "lock" in the icon. It has only one permission: Everyone "No Access". I'm unable to change the permission.
(2) Click on the boot drive and make invisible files visible. Expand Volumes. Get Indo on the Data "folder". The permissions are:
everyone - read/write
don (Me) - read/write
admin - read/write
everyone - read only
There are 2 "everyone" entries!!! I can't remove either of them. I wonder if the second "everyone" is the problem?
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this read-only problem?
Is there a bug in the firmware? My TC version is 7.4.2.

Disk Utility didn't report any errors. I checked the log too.
The disk "Data" in TimeCapsule can be opened using the Finder.
The sparsebundle for the MacPro can be opened and each backup folder is accessible and can be written to. But TimeMachine still says that the TimeCapsule is read-only.
The sparsebundle for the iMac G5 cannot be opened from the Finder. The error message is that I don't have sufficient privileges. Trying from both the MacPro and iMac G5. TimeMachine still says the TimeCapsule is read-only.
I tried using fsck_hfs to try fixing the permissions. But I got the message that the disk Data was not a character device; whatever that implies.
Tomorrow I'm putting a call into Apple Support.

Time Capsule Connection Help Needed (Flashing Amber)

I've been trying to troubleshoot my Time Capsule connection for a week now and I have had zero luck.
I have a Imac with OSX 10.6.8 that uses AirPort v 5.6.1. I have a Cat-5 (ethernet cable) plugged from my Time Capsule port (looks like this <-->) into an available port in my cable mode/router. My Imac is also plugged into this router. The two cat-5 (ethernet) cables are side by side.
So....
Every time I plug in the Time Capsule I get the following prompt via AirPort.
AirPort Utility found a Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation) that is
reporting problems.
Time Capsule's Name : My Capsule
          IP Address: 10.0.1.1
          Versino: 7.6.1
          AirPort ID: 12:88:93:CC:FF:72
If this is not the AirPort wireless devise you want to setup you can select another from the list on the left. If you don't see it make sure.... Blah blah blah....
To make a long story tollerable I do see my Time Capsule on the left at the top. Its the only one and its selected by default. So I do the next logical thing right? I click "Continue" and AirPort reads the Time Capsule's configuration.... and then...... I get the error
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged
in and in range of your computer or connected via
Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
Can anyone help me understand why I can grab the Time Capsule's IP Address but AirPort can not read the hardware's (Time Capsule) config?
I'm at a loss.
Could my ethernet cable be the issue?

Thanks man... Yes, I plugged it into the circle symbol with no joy. I also went to Wal Mart and baught a new seven foot cat-5 for $10. Again I still have the flashing amber light.
After plugging in the ethernet cable into the circle icon port AirPort returns the following prompt.
I reset the TC (ball point pen to the reset hole untill fast blinking amber light occurs) and entered the needed params and it returns this error.
An error occured close the configuation window and try again.
It must be a config parameter that I'm setting incorrectly. There's a bunch so who knows what I'm doing wrong.
I just need the to talk to my Imac so i can get a backup executed. A wireless connection will take too long.
FYI: The cat-5 is brand new and is 100% functional (green light on the TC and router.)

Time Capsule: Need help accessing my video surveillance DVR from the Internet.

I am using the latest 4th Generation Time Capsule attached to a DSL Modem. My 4 video Survilance DVR is connected to a switch then to the Time Capsule. How or what is needed to be able to access the DVR via the internet. I am able to access the DVR from within the home network only. Would appreciate some guidance.

Is the modem bridged?
If not and working in router mode then the TC should be bridged.. this will never work if you have double NAT.
Whichever box is the main router will need to forward the required ports for the camera dvr.. does the software use port 80 ie html?? That means you just forward port 80 to the IP address of the dvr. But find out the port.. the dvr instructions should tell you. Port forwarding on the TC.. ain't hard.. just google for the instructions. If the dsl modem is router, read its manual.
You will need to lock the ip of the dvr so it doesn't shift. Do that in the router if possible but I am not sure you can on the TC. You will need to do it on the device using a static ip.
The other thing is public IP .. do you have a static public address.. if not you will need to run dyndns. this is not available in the TC.. as most things are not available. So you will also need to check the dvr remote access instructions as it might have a dyndns client.. or you will have to use dsl modem as router even if you currently bridge it.
Sorry this is making it complicated.
Give some feedback and we can go from there.
What is the main router?
What modem is it exactly?
What make and model is the DVR? A URL to the pdf manual will help if it gets complicated.
What port do you use to access the DVR?
Is there a dyndns client in the dvr?

Time Capsule 500gb Help! Trying to set up

I just received a Time Capsule 500Gb model # MB764LL/A It should be working with my iBook G4 which is running on OX 10.5.8 and has the Time Machine software. I am connected wirelessly with the flying saucer Airport Extreme Base Station. I printed out the instructions which seem pretty easy except I do not have the 'set up' CD but my Airport Utility is 5.4.2 so thats current. I have 14 days to return this item and I don't think its broken, I just could be missing something. How important is the Cd? Thanks for any help in advance!!!!

There are a few steps to take when this happens.
Disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer to the TC for a moment and power down your computer.
Make sure the TC is powered up and then hold in the reset button until the amber light begins to blink quickly. Hold a few more seconds, then release the reset button.
Now connect the ethernet cable again and restart your computer to see if that helps.
If that does not do the trick, the next step is to try a Factory Default Reset as follows:
Power down your computer, etc as above.
Pull the AC power plug from the TC
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AC plug back in
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
This is a bit tricky to do and you almost need 3 hands.
Then connect the ethernet cable and power your computer back up, etc.

Time Capsule newly - HELP!

I don't know whether I am being really dull so I apologise in advance!
I work at the bottom of our garden in a shed (smart tho ). I have a DLink wifi extender which runs through the electricity supply into the shed and I connect my Mac wirelessly to the internet located in the house (BT home hub). I have an Airport Extreme and now a new Time Capsule (the intention of which is so that the whole family can back up their macbooks and my Mac to the Time Machine). All Macbooks in the house now configured however my Mac (in the shed) often does not 'see' the Time Capsule.
When I go to TIme Machine preferences it appears under the 'Remote Airport base stations' however it then says it cannot read the settings?
Does my Mac (in the shed) have to be on the same network name as the Time Machine? Although my wifi sees the network configured on the Time Machine wifi it won't connect?
Am I doing something very wrong or does somebody have any top tips?

I believe so. You need to have them both on the same network in order for the shed Mac to access the time machine. Does the DLink wifi extender give out network addresses? If the Time Machine is on a network as 192.168.1.# and the shed Mac is on a network as 192.168.0.#, where the "#" is the individual number for each device, then they can't talk to each other as local network devices. The first 3 numbers need to be the same, with only the last one different.

Time Capsule (NEED HELP!)

Have had it up for about a week and today it suddenly is not working for past 2 hours.
Time Capsule is connected to a router that is being fed DSL. The DSL is working. The router is working.
Nothing was changed and suddenly it can't be found, etc. when trying to connect wirelessly.
I tried Airport Utility and it says it can't find it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Setup is as follows:
DSL > Linksys RV082> Time Capsule
It goes from being found to not found. The speed of the wireless when we have been able to connect in the past 2 hours from 184kbps down to 2mbps down (we were getting 5.1mbps down).
Checked the dsl connection and that is right where it has always been 5.1mbps down.
Time capsule just stopped working.

Time Capsule please help

Hi,
I have just set up my time capsule, after quite a few drama's. It's seems to be finally working.
The only thing is that when I search the content on the TC, it shows that the storage space has been used but I can find all the info.
When i search the pictures I had on the mac no content is shown in the TC. Am I doing something wrong? Or do I have reset the TC to factory settings and set it up again?
Also I have to upgrade my operating system to install an application and I have been advised that I should do a clean install. Will I have access to the content on the TC with out restoring the info back to the mac?

If you are asking about the iPhoto library, Apple removed the feature that allows you to "browse" the backup library in Time Machine some time ago. You have to "Restore" the entire library to another destination....like your Mac's desktop....and then pick out the individual images that you need.

Sorry, I have not ever done a "clean" install when upgrading the operating system.....(this sounds more like Windows).....so cannot help on that one. If you elect to do a clean install, Time Machine will likely view your Mac as another "new" Mac and backup the entire contents of the Mac on the first backup that runs.

Time Capsule password help

I have a new laptop and am trying to connect it to my time capsule. It is asking me to put in the password and I don't remember it.
How can I access the password?
The time capsule connects to my old computer. Perhaps I can retrieve the password from there????? Help!

Do you have the Mac that you used to originally configure the Time Capsule?
Do you remember your administrator password for the Mac?
If yes, post back for more instructions.
If no, you will need to reset the wireless password. See this Apple support document....in particular, the information about a Soft Reset.

Time Capsule, DynDns Help

Hi everyone,
I switched to Time Capsule not a long time ago.
I am traveling quit a lot and I used to work with my belkin router. I setup Dyndns at my belkin router, which was important to know my ip adress.
With that ip-information I was able to turn on my home computer through wake-on-lan(WOL), when I was on trip.
Now, since it is not possible to use dyndns with time capsule,
does someone know how to get my ip adress when I am out of house and my home computer is off ?
What I have found out so far is, you can use dyndns-updater.Dyndns-Updater updates my ip online, so I can check it out on the dyndns website, but as I know it updates only when my home computer is on.
My goal is to have my home computer off all the time, unless I need something so I can turn it on where ever I am.
Any solution ?

I don't understand how Apple can do that by skiiping to implement dyndns, since every cheap router offers dyndns ?!
MAybe there is another way and someone would like to share it with me.

I don't want to pay extra money to my ISP just to have a static ip.
The reason actually why I switched my router was because I had many problems with my wifi.
Now it seems to work perfectly with time capsule, but I will miss dyndns once i am on a trip again.
I know I could use my old router with time capsule, but I don't want to have more stuff pluged in next to my computer.

Time Capsule Ethernet Help

I'm trying to set up a Time Capsule to connect to the router via Ethernet and let me do my initial backup through Ethernet to my computer and then be able to do wireless backups after that. And I will be able to connect to the internet wirelessly.
Now my problem is Everybody tells me that if I plug my router(NETGEAR) into my Time Capsules WAN port via Ethernet and set it up to extend the network that It would work. But When I plug it into the WAN port and choose that option it gives me a list of available devices(routers) that are connected via ethernet. My router is not there. All I see is "Previous Time Capsule Config".
Now what? No matter what I do I can get it to pick up my router via ethernet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to bridge the Time Capsule.
Go to the top menu Internet and select connect using ethernet and then below that, connection sharing.. choose bridge mode.
Now it doesn't matter what port the TC is plugged into the main router. And wireless can be setup as you like.. but you are not extending the wireless. You are using it as a simple AP.
Does the Netgear have wireless? If so you can use manual channel setup in the TC .. just use a different channel to the Netgear.

Time Capsule Issue Help!!!!!

I had a time macbook for 3 yrs! About a week ago it got liquid damage and was replaced. I used time machine for backup and wireless connections. In the past I have looked multiple times and seen my content was back up. Today after setting up my new macbook pro and time capsule back up to it. I went to go transfer files from time capsule and there was nothing but the current back ups from todays date. I had to perform a soft reset to set up a new password. From my understanding a soft reset doesnt erase previous backups it just allow seeting changes to be made. I need someone help because all my photos, video and import information is in that time capsule (or not). HELP SOMEONE PLEASE!!!!

How did you set up your new Mac? The best way is to use Setup Assistant to load everything from the backups. See How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC?
Depending on how you set it up, and what you've done since then, the reason you can't see the old backups is because they're for a different Mac. Time Machine normally only shows the backups for the Mac it's running on. To see backups for a different Mac, you need the Browse... option per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17.

Time capsule usage help?

I find a multitude of info and help regarding time capsule setup.
I must be searching incorrectly but I am now trying to use the time machine to restore a couple of files.
Where do I find restore help?
PS I have the fles on my camera chip, but I'm now concerned that after being diligent with religous use of the time capsule, that I can't really use the data saved for a restore which after all is why I do this in the first place. I must really be dense. An

Finding files depends on how and where you saved them.. generally you cannot find a single photo in iphoto for example.. it is a single database.. and can only be found by restoring the whole database.. so don't abuse yourself.. it can be difficult if you don't remember a raw file name to find it.
