Time Capsule No Longer Backs Up First Computer After Adding Second Computer

I'm new to this forum and I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere.
I have a 1 TB TC. I used it to begin backups on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.5.6). I did the first backup on 1/4/09 and, up until today, it has been working very well, with hourly backups, as it is supposed to. Today, I added my wife's PowerBook (also 10.5.6). After the first backup (by ethernet link), it now performs hourly backups on hers. On my MacBook, however, it reports "preparing to backup" for hours, with nothing happening. Again, everything was fine on my computer, until I added the second one.
Any idea what might be happening?
Thanks,
Marty Hewlett

Problem is solved. It turns out that I had three events that occurred, only one of which caused my problem. As you suggested, adding a second computer had nothing to do with it. A second, unrelated issue had to do with my Cannon scanner driver. An old driver version was producing the Console readout about vendor and device. The real issue was that I had experienced a screen freeze and had to to a forced restart. That likely produced the "deep transversal" discussed in the link to which you referred. In any case, waiting an appropriate length of time finally produced the back up. Everything seems normal at this point. Thanks for the help.

I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. There are many computers within my department. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but was unsure of which option to click. I clicked "I want to create a new wireless network". At the onset the instructions said I needed to connect with an ethernet cable, which I did. But I have no desire to connect to the internet, print from it, or have others access. I did deselect guest options, and I did put in passwords. But at the end of the process I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to continue."
I was worried this would shut me down and I wouldn't be able to continue to work. I don't necessarily need to connect wirelessly. It is connected via ethernet cable from machine to device.
Can you advise me how to continue? Did I choose the wrong options?

I bought an external hard drive called "Seagate Backup Plus" From the Apple store to back up everything on my computer and anything new on my computer. It came with Time Machine. The external hard drive disk had 1 or 2 Terabytes. Time Machine says "next backup: When disk is connected." "Oldest backup: July 2, 2014." & Also "Latest back July, 2."

  • After lion upgrade time capsule no longer backs up

Time capsule no longer will back up after lion upgrade is anyone else having this problem?

The Time Machine application is part of the Lion operating system, so you will likely get a faster and more informed response if you post in the Lion support area for Time Machine. There are a number of posts there with issues similar to yours.
    Mac OS X v10.7 Lion
Click on the Refine This List button under the Lion and then click on Time Machine to get to the support area.

  • Time capsule no longer backing up after 10.6 upgrade

After upgrading to OSX10.6 my time machine (through time capsule) is not backing up anymore. I can connect to the disk through finder and also through the time machine application. I can also see my backups from 10.5 and there are no issues with the wireless or router.
During attempted hourly backup the error message is:
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Latest successful backup: 27/09/2009 at 15:29
it seems that i am not alone in this post OSX10.6 problem but have not found any solution yet - anyone help?

Just thought i would update after finally resolving this.
Tried many things after trawling the internet, eventually including reformat.
Established it was an error 11 via 'TM error log' and final solution was to change the names of one of my hard drives which had a '-' and a '/' in it.
These names had not caused any problems for 6 months under 10.5 but seem to be the issue under 10.6......
Time Machine has done a full backup and regular hourly ones for the last 2 days
still having a couple of spurious issues with 10.6, cannot force a shutdown from my account if my wife is logged in - i have to log her account out before i can shut down.

  • Time Capsule Disappears from Radius Base Stations List after adding

I'm running a Mac Mini with 10.7, Lion Server, and Server Admin Tools along with a Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Generation).
After I add the base station (you can see my steps below) the base station restarts and then disappears from the list. The base station is then ignored:
Sat Jul 23 11:47:41 2011 : Error: Ignoring request to authentication address * port 1812 from unknown client 10.0.1.1 port 65530
This is because it's not listed as a known base station in the radius config (as far as I can tell). No other errors (than the one above) listed in either radiusconfig Log or radiusd Log. I cannot figure out how to add the base station to the list! Do I need to just manually add it to the clients.conf? If I do that, I feel like I probably won't get any of the special features that come with the Server managing the base station. Has anyone else experience this?
The base station does get the configuration from the server when I set it up, it switches from WPA 2 Personal to WPA 2 Enterprise with a shared secret, the correct IP and port 1812.
The server does not have a firewall configured or enabled (for simplicity while configuring this...)
Here's how I set up Radius:
Selected the Time Capsule from the Hardware list in Server.app
Checked the box for "Allow user name and password login over wi-fi"
Opened up the Server Admin.app and selected my server
    Expanded to choose RADIUS
    Chose Configure RADIUS Service
    Allowed all users
Selected my Base Station and entered the password
    Used my default certificate
    Accepted the default options
    Let the Time Capsule restart
After the Time Capsule was back online, Base Stations lists 0 base stations.
Clicked on the Base Stations Tab and Chose Browse, selected the base station, entered the password, let the Time Capsule Restart, it shows up in the list, but when the list is refreshed, the Time Capsule no longer appears in the list.
Clicked on the add button ("+") and Added the information manually, set a shared secret, and let the Time Capsule restart, it shows up in the list, but when the list is refreshed, the Time Capsule no longer appears in the list.
Using Terminal, manually tried to add the Base Station: radiusconfig --capture-base-station 10.0.1.1 10.0.1.254
    Entered a shared secret
Time Capsule restarted, was never listed in the radius config

Hello, I am having the same exact problem. Have you figured out a solution?
    Please let me know!

  • Time Capsule no longer backing up either of my Macs

I have two Macs. A MacBook Pro and and iMac. The MacBook Pro is a replacement of an older MacBook Pro. Both were backing up fine for two years prior to my replacing the MacBook Pro. The new MBP has not backed up since I incorrectly chose "Create a new backup" when I first brought it home. Now it thinks that it is a third Mac to backup, and there is not enough space on the TC. iMac had been continuing to backup fine on TC. Yesterday though, on the iMac I moved around a ton of files (while organizing) including emptying a folder that was on my iMac desktop that contained hundreds of files, videos, etc... and moving those files to my Documents, Photos, Movies folders in my Home folder. Since I did that the TC will not back up the iMac either. So now I have two Macs and TC will not back up either. In both cases I get the message that TC does not have enough space to backup the computer. I have no idea what to do next. Is there a way to start over and erase the entire TC? Is that the best course of action now? If so, is there a place where that process is explained step by step in non-technical terms? I have no idea what bundled files means, sparse this or that, etc... Thanks.

Between having a whole extra sparse bundle, and moving lots of things around so Time Machine backed-them up again, yes, you've no doubt filled-up your TC.
First, turn Time Machine OFF on both Macs.
The simple solution is to just erase the TC and start over.  See To erase everything on the Time Capsule’s internal disk in #Q5 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.  Connect one Mac at a time to the TC via Ethernet (1-3 times faster than WIFI) for the first backup.
    For something a bit less drastic, but more tedious, connect the iMac via Ethernet (same reason), and do the following;
Delete the sparse bundle for the old MacBookPro, via the Finder.  See To delete all the backups for one Mac in the above article.
For the data you rearranged on the iMac, delete all backups made of it in the old location, per #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
In addition, consider the size of your TC vs. the size of the data on your Macs.  If the TC isn't well over twice the size of the total used on both Macs, your best bet might be to connect a USB drive to the TC's USB port.  Continue backing-up one Mac to the TC's internal HD, but back the other one up to the USB drive.

  • Time capsule no longer backing up

I recently got this error message:  The backup disc image "/Volumes/Data-1/"my computer name's" macbook pro.sparsebundle" is already in use."
anybody see this or have advice.
It backed up fine last night but wont back up again.
    Thanks in advance

This is a common bug in Lion and Mountain Lion.
Often, simply powering off the Time Capsule, waiting a minute, and powering it back up will get things going again.

  • Time Capsule gives MobileMe/Apple ID password error after adding Express

I have a 1st Gen Time Capsule at the top of my network plugged into my cable modem.  I just purchased one of the new Airport Expresses to extned my network.
I plugged the Airport Express in and used the iOS "Airport Utility" app to set it up.  The utility (both on the the iOS and on my Mac) show the new Airport Express with a green light and connected.  However, my Time Capsule now has a warning error with an orange light.
On the iOS device, it says "Unrecognized Apple ID or password--An Apple ID or password is incorrect.  Enter the correct Apple ID and password and try again."  Of course, on the iOS, there's no way to enter it, so I went to the Mac's Airport Utility (I have both 5.6 and 6.0, but I used 5.6).  On the Mac's Airport Utility, the error says that the MobileMe member name or password is incorrect.  (Note, wireless continues to work--I just have the error).
Since the Mac's utility asks to correct the MobileMe username/password, I type those in and let it update.  I know that I am typing the correct username/password, but the error continues to occur.  I could click "ignore this issue" on the iOS Airport Utility and all lights so green, but the issue shouldn't be there to begin with.  I'd like to figure out what is causing the error.  Is there another location that I should be entering the information?
I do have a separate Apple ID, but it's asking for my MobileMe credentials (which migrated over to iCloud).
It's bizarre that the NEW device has no errors and my wireless is still working.  But the original Time Capsule which was working fine with no errors, now has an error after adding the new device.

Crazy, but attempting to fix the information in Airport Utility 6.0 worked fine--but it wouldn't work in AU 5.6.
It does seem odd that I couldn't attempt to fix the username/password issue from within the iOS app to begin with.  It told me what the error was, but didn't seem to give me a place to edit the information.

  • Time Capsule no longer backs up since I've moved

    Hi all,
this is the second time that this has happened. My TimeCapsule was working fine, with no issues, until I boxed it up because I was moving to another apartment. I set it up on the other end, and re-established my wireless network (still with the same name) just fine, but the TimeCapsule will no longer perform backups because it says that it can't find the backup drive!
First it will say that :"there was a problem with the network username or password" and it tells me to go into the Preferences and to "select the network backup disc and re-enter the correct username and password." Which I do.
From here System Preferences will try to find the disc when I click "select disc," and one of two things will happen: it will find the disc, I enter the password, ask it to backup and it fails, OR I get the spinning beachball forever and System Preferences stops responding and I have to force quit.
I don't get it. Literally the ONLY thing that is different is the fact that I moved 16 blocks, and I changed the wi-fi password. Everything else is identical to how it was before! Why can't it perform a backup, and why does my SysPref freeze up half the time!?
    Any insight is appreciated.

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

  • Time Machine No Longer Backing Up

I have been using Time Machine since I installed Leopard in May. Before I began I partitioned the external USB 2.0 drive using Disk Utility into a 320G Back Up and a second smaller partition which I use when working with iMovie files. I occasionally [but rarely] had a failure to automatically back up but the next try always worked.
Since October 27 Time Machine has failed to back up. I have read the forum postings and am getting no results. I am now getting a message to reformat which I'd prefer not to do. Here are the specifics:
    1. The last valid back up was at 2 am. The next one at 3 am failed. No one else was using the computer at the time. There was no power interruption.
    2. Antivirus is not running.
    3. I had not added any software between the last back up and the failure point.
    4. I tuned off Time Machine and trashed the "in progress" file.
    5. I did add the Time Machine Backup widget yesterday and got the following message:
    Backup requested by user
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Main Back Up/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 816.3 MB requested (including padding), 266.65 GB available
    Stopping backup.

    Copy stage failed with error:11
    Backup failed with error: 11
[for privacy I have changed my user name to X]
    6. I then opened the named package and deleted the specified thumb
    7. I rebooted - still not able to back up
    8. I turned off Time Machine
    9. I then went to disk utility which was unable to unmount the drive to check it.
    10. Rebooted again and ran Disk Utility. It finally said it was a sibling conflict and could not be repaired
    11. Now I am getting a message the disk is a read only file and to back up/reformat.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Jean,
These suggestions have worked for others experiencing the "Read Only" error.
*_“The Backup Volume is Read Only”_*
    *Cold Reboot the Hard Disk*
First, unmount the drive from the desktop.
    Power it down.
Unplug it from the wall socket.
    Disconnect it from the computer.
    Wait 10 minutes.
Plug it back in to the wall socket.
Connect it back into the computer.
    Power it back up.
When it reappears on the desktop try backing up again. This simple step has worked for some in this situation. Regrettably, most who experience this error have had to reformat their Time Machine hard disks. So prepare for this eventuality.
If the above doesn’t work, let us know. We may have other options if you have access to another Mac.
*Use “Get Info” to Change Permissions on 3rd-Party Hard Disks*
Highlight the external hard disk on your desktop.
Go up to the "File" menu and select "Get Info".
At the bottom is "Sharing & Permissions".
Click the little lock icon in the lower right and enter your Admin Password.
Are you (Username) listed in the Name column? If not, add your user account with the tiny “+” button.
What does it say under "Privilege" beside your name?
If it is "Read only" change it to "Read & Write".
    Close "Get Info".
    Now try to backup.
    *By-Pass USB Hub*
If you are using a USB hub, try by-passing the hub and connecting the external hard disk directly into your Mac.
*Use DiskWarrior to Rebuild Disk Directory*
For some, using DiskWarrior to rebuild the backup disks’ directories was the answer. While not cheap ($100), it is definitely an indispensable tool to have at your disposal for some. This procedure make require more than one attempt, but it has resolved this issue for some.
“After a few frustrating days, I used Disk Warrior version 4.1 to rebuild the directory of the Time Capsule. It failed the first time. However, on the second try and after about half an hour process of rebuilding, it successfully rebuilt and fixed many problems in the TC directory….The Read Only error disappeared.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8386348#8386348]
Let us know if any of the above resolved your issue.
    Cheers!

  • How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and Power Book

How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and MacBookPro

It is generally better to leave the old backups and start again.. unless there is something you particularly need.
But if you desperately want all the old backups you have to copy the sparse bundles.. this will take very long time as it must copy via the computer..

Take particular note of the initial comments.. ie before you read how to do it.. don't do it.

    Hello,
Thanks for your message, I have attempted to repait the permissions as tou suggested.  The first time this produced a long list of exceptions and took quite a while, however although it said "Permissions repair Complete" when I ran it again there were still about 20 exceptions, I have repeated the procedure and this is unchanged.  The Time Capsule now does not spend hours "Preparing", but the backup attempt fails after a few minutes with the error message "The backup volume could not be mounted."  Any further ideas would be appreciated.   When I use Disk Utility I can't see the Time Capsule volume, if I could I'd be tempted to re-format it and start from scratch.
