Time Capsule permanently saying '5 seconds remaining' since Lion upgrade

I've seen that this question has been asked once before and the answer was "just wait". I've been waiting about 5 or 6 weeks now, and it's still always saying 5 seconds remaining even though the amount backing up grows and shrinks. This can't be right. I've rebooted my Mac and TC a number of times just to see if that solves anything, but no.
Another mac seems to be fine - maybe it's because I'm on a mac book pro from 2008?
Anyone got any ideas?
Steve

OK, I'm fixed.
Thanks to Pondini for leading me to look in the right places (I'm a little annoyed with myself for not trawling the logs anyway!)
So, full disk encryption is still enabled, I have not had to turn that off. When I went through the logs, I did notice a number of errors on the Time Capsule. After googling these error messages, it suggested that there may be a problem with the Time Capsule. Using Disk Utility I verified and repaired the Time Capsule Disks, and now it appears to be OK (so far so good.) One word of warning, the first time I tried to verify it told me that the Time Capsule was corrupted and that I needed to salvage what I could before wiping and starting again. I was not keen to do this, but after rebooting the TC, walking away from the mac (for a really good curry!) I came back, and then kicked off the verify/repair successfully. So, it seems to have been working fine for about a week now, no more 5 seconds remaining messages and the backups seem much faster.
Thanks to Pondini and to my local curry house (Chilli Nights in Haslemere, Surrey, UK)
Please let me know if this works for everyone else (the fix, not the curry)

    Hello,
Mac OS X 10.4 Help, I forgot a password in my Keychain

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

  • When I try to set up my time capsule it says that the PPPoE Server is not found... What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thanks !

When I try to set up my time capsule it says that the PPPoE Server is not found... What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thanks !

You are using PPPoE but there is no server to authenticate against.. or the modem is already connected and nothing else can join.
    Is this ADSL?
Do you have the modem in bridge?
How does it work with the modem working as router? ie what type of connection does your ISP supply.. eg PPPoE is only one.. PPPoA is another.. IPoA or ETHoA.. and sever other more specialised.. PPPoE can only work where it is supported.

Hello, no experience with TC, but...
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

  • Hi trying to set up new Time Capsule, it says I need a newer version of Airport Utility, how do I get this?

Hi trying to set up new Time Capsule, it says I need a newer version of Airport Utility, how do I get this?

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher

Reset the TC to factory and start again.
But do not be surprised if the v5 utility no longer works to do the setup.

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

  • Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue.

Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue. Help

For anyone following this thread, I've found a solution to my problem. Turns out that a cute widget called FishTank appears to be the culprit. With it running in Dashboard (even when I don't see Dashboard) the Screensaver and Sleep functions don't work. I turned it off, not because I'm clever, just because I tired of it, and voilà, Screensaver and Sleep are now working. It can stay in my widgets list without any problem, it just can't be turned on. I'm going to delete it anyway, however.
Hope this points the way to solutions for some of the rest of you!
    Cheers!

  • My time capsule sparsebundle says error message resource temporally unavailable since I updated my software, Im currently using OS 10.7.5

I did the update when the new update for my Iphone to 7.0.2 came out, so I runed my MacBook Pro software update and updated it, since that day my back ups started in another folder, the space on my time capsule is still taken but I can't acces the old back ups, I have read several forums and followed all the instructions to get to previous backups and it just has been imposible, my back ups are done wireless and they should be under the sparsebundle file that appears on finder when I select my time capsule displays the mesage Resourse Temporarly

  • Time capsule backups say I don't have access privileges

I just reinstalled operating system on my macbook pro. Went to Time Capsule and found that all of my documents were not available to restore. Applications seem to be fine, but I went into the backups and found the documents with little red circles (with minus signs) in the bottom. When I click on them, it says I do not have sufficient access privileges. I have brought the files in using the gear in Leapord to restore them... putting them on my desktop, but they still appear with the little red circle and it still says I don't have access privileges. Is there any way to access the files? Pretty desperate here... it's all my work and I thought the were backed up by my time capsule.

Wow. That sure is a lot of geek for an average user. Since posting my original question, I did poke around (in a terminal window) and found that pesky invisible file. I didn't think of changing permissions, I simply moved it to a different, temporary location. Time Machine worked after that, and it created a new invisible file of the same name, so I just deleted the original file that I'd moved.
I have another followup question so stay tuned to this topic!

  • Installation of OS X Mountain Lion does not move on even though it says o second remaining. It has been taking at least 4 hours. Help!!!!!

I wanted to restore my Mac before I give it out to my brother. After cleaning it, I have been trying to reinstall the OS X Mountain Lion but it does not work; it just takes forever. It is so frustrating that the installation stops when it says "about 0 seconds remaining." Help please!

Restart while holding down the Command + R keys so you can verify and if necessary, repair the startup disk.

  • Using Time Machine/Time Capsule bu to restore second machine

    Simple question, hopefully simple answer.
I have a PPC G5.(Machine 1) Good machine. (Thought I had an i/o error -36 but turned out to be spare drive--not the Time Capsule. Installing system on THAT drive resulted in flashing icons.) But still, as I will be moving soon, my girlfriend and I will have a total of 3 computers and for space reasons I may need to give up the oldest one and keep my MACBOOK PRO (Machine two) So my question:
    1) If I make sure all the original programs on machine 1 are on machine 2 (at least the essential ones), can I take the backup for machine 1 (PPC) and restore it to the nearly empty machine 2?
    2) In other words, can I take a backup from an old PPC machine and, using restore, can I thus create a pretty similar replica of what was on it on a new machine (INTEL)?
    Thanks.

I did a restore using Application manager and it hung for two hours with one minute remaining with unsatisfactory results---some stuff not making it, some programs not working. I want to rinstall a new system over the new machine and bring over stuff I need by hand.
Presumably some folders under MAC HD
But what exactly MUST me moved-->
Library (at first level inside HD)
    System (anything in there?)
And then IN users, I want to move stuff too (from one of two users)
    MOVIES
    Yet ANOTHER LIBRARY????
    MOVIES
    MUSIC
    DOWNLOADS
    DOCS
    PICS
    All selectively?
Thanks for advice and any caveats
    Old machine PPC G5 Tower
New Machine Intel Mac Book Pro
Also, the new machine has a slightly lower space so I MUST be selective.
Both machines will be same system (latest)

  • Time capsule permanently delayed

Ive been using my airport extreme's usb port to hang a 1TB Lacie drive to use with time capsule among other things. It's been working fine, but now after I've been away a week, I've returned to find it always says it's "delayed" for it's last backup. When i open the preferences, i try re-selecting the drive but it still produces the same fault.
I can still mount the drive and browse it no worries from the finder. Any ideas ??

As a test, can you turn off wireless on one of the Macs and connect to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable....then watch it for a few days to see how it performs?
A plus to this test is that backups will occur probably 4-5 times faster than wireless.
Post back on your results in a few days. If you have no problems with Ethernet, that likely narrows things down to a potential wireless interference issue with another network, other electronics, a nearby wireless camera/security system or cordless phones.

  • Time Capsule permanently connected as a wireless hard drive?

I am having an issue with my Time Capsule as a hard drive. I have weekly backups scheduled to backup to the TC, but I find that unless I go into Finder and select the TC and then Connect to it so that I can see the Data drive, it fails to back up.
Surely there is a way that the data drive is always connected, ala my iDisk. Seems a little pointless to have a "hassle free back up solution" when it is far from hassle free.

I don't think that's really going to solve his problem. It sounds like the OP has a regular (non Time Machine) backup schedule, and if his TC isn't mounted it doesn't work. At the moment he has to do what you're saying every time he restarts or his system goes to sleep/loses wireless connectivity.
