Time code finder to auto sync separate video and audio

Hi All,
Trying to see if FCP has a tool that would allow me to type in the time code from my digital slate to instantly sync separate video & audio. Shot a low budget feature on a RED and digitally recorded audio. We did setup the RED to get reference audio but now I need to sync each scene and take up to the primo audio.
As far as I know, FCP doesn't have any such option but I hope someone proves me wrong.

This is kind of off the top of my head, since I usually sync using the "dumb" part of the slate, but here's a workflow I'd try. I'm assuming here that the timecode from your digital slate matches the audio timecode.
1. Select an audio clip in the bin. Choose from the menu Modify/Timecode...
2. Copy the Source TC value into the Aux TC 1 row. You might have to turn on some checkboxes on the left side. Make sure the format and the rate are the same for both.
3. Open the video clip in the viewer and find a frame where you can see the smart slate clearly.
4. Select Modify/Timecode... and enter the timecode value you see in that frame in the Aux TC 1 row. Again, be sure you're using the right format and rate.
5. Select the two audio and video clips that you want to sync. Choose Modify/Merge Clips... and synchronize using Aux Timecode 1.
You should then have a new merged clip with the audio and video in sync. The scratch audio that came with the video file will be there too, so pay attention to your audio patching and be careful about which tracks you actually cut into the timeline.
I can't say for sure if this is faster than just marking inpoints at the clap on each clip. Typing in all that timecode could be hazardous to one's health.

  • Syncing separate video and audio

My audio was recored separately from my video. (We used a clapper on set similar to a film shoot) After I have synced the video and audio on the timeline, is there a way I can marry both so whenever I open my video clip from the browser, the audio stays constantly sunk.

Merge Clips works most of the time but I have found the only dependable way to make sure audio and video stay together forever and ever is export it self-contained. For me, using DV, that's not a big deal.
Also to consider, your audio file may drift over time which may require breaking things up into 30-90 second clips.

  • Sync of Video and Audio streams

I got a main project to make a video conferance system. And i'm not sure how to sync the video and Audio streams. (Audio need to have higher priority than video)
Video is all moust real-time but audio is around 0.5 sec delay at the fastest.
I realy need to find out how to sync them since its one of my main subjects in the project.
So if anyone know how to, plz let me know.

    Hello,
I try to implement a videoconference in Java with JMF. At the reception, audio and vido aren't synchronizing. I'm looking for a solution to resolve this problem because i think in this kind of application, audio and video tracks must be synchronized. I'd like to know when and how can i do the synchronization : at the capture, before transmission, or at the reception ?

  • Here is a Tutorial on How to sync Multiple Video and Audio Clips

Check out my Tutorial on How to sync Multiple Video and Audio Clips http://vimeo.com/28972315

Very true ! My main point was to show how easy it was to sync. I still think apple has a way to go to make this a great tool. It was fast to edit but when I want to send somthing to AE 5.5 it was a nightmare. I do  I love how it organizes keywords and the color correction tools are good if you want to do it your self (check out this site http://www.colorgradingcentral.com/final-cut-pro-x-color-grading-table-of-conten ts ) it will be a great program if apple listens to all the comments but does not make it too complicated the you cant create quickly.

  • Combining Separate Video and Audio tracks

Hi, what's the best way to combine a video and audio tracks into a single file? We will be given the video and audio from 13 volleyball games, and each game will be coming as a file.mpg (mpeg2) video and an mp3 file.
We're looking for a way to either manually bring it in, or bulk automate a way of combining the two tracks for each game to have one file that is in a format that doesn't need to be rendered in FCP.
    Thanks!

Seems like there should be some way to combine clips somewhere though? < </div>
Not if they're form separate devices or in different codecs. the MPEG2 files are the big problem, next time, have your people shoot conventional DV and use the audio interface to bring in a feed from your announce booth or radio station or whatever so it's in sync.

  • Syncing/Merging Video and Audio, Getting rid of production audio

I'm driving myself crazy over here thinking there must be a simple solution I am overlooking. I have clips with production audio that came from the camera. I also have separate audio wav files that came from the dat tape. I want to sync the video with the wav sound, lose the bad camera audio and create a new clip that references back to the original material. Is this possible? So far, all I have been able to do is create a merged clip with all of the audio files (from camera and dat). Thanks for any help.

I think I finally figured it out. (Yes, I am very determined) A few steps, but worth it if everything
links back to original material and makes editing easier...
So, what I figured out is:
    1. Put take with video in the viewer and select an in mark. (I used sticks) Cut video only into the timeline.
    2. Put audio wav file in viewer, select the in and cut audio into timeline.
    3. Check sync.
    4. Select both the audio and video in the timeline.
    5. Command L to link the audio and video together (important step I
    missed earlier in my travails)
    6. Now select and drag the audio and video from the timeline directly into a bin.
This creates the clip I have been tearing my hair out about....with only the audio that I want, no extra tracks.
Thanks to Jerry for his help and suggestions.

  • Separate Video and Audio tracks

After I've opened a new project and dragged the clips into the timeline, the Audio and Video tracks suddenly are separated. Their pôsition is changed an the video track is on track 1 while the audio is to find on track 6. (see image attached) There is no way to drag them together, also by first having them disconnected. Does anybody know how to bring them both together on their track 1 as it use to be and as illustrated on the second attached image ?
    Joined tracks

    Thanks Bill,
How do I get acces to the main forum ?
But isn't it so that if you import clips containing 5.1 surround, automatic a 5.1 channel audiotrack is added to the project.
When I do this, the audio channel is created on track 6, although I have the preset of the standard timeline by starting a new project put on 3 audio and 3 video tracks.
    Tracks 4 and 5 don't exist.
When I load an old project with the normal timeline, i still can add clips by the usual way. Everything works normal.
When I try to drag the audio track to the track Audio as it use to be thits place, both tracks jumps two tracks higher.
I compaired the old and the new project and find no difference in the presettings.
I am desperate because it's useless to start new projects with this failure.
Many thanks in advance to help me anyway.

  • Is there a way to separate video and audio?

I'm new to iMovie 08 because I've always used FCP. But for this particular project I'm working on, I think FCP would be overkill and I've always wanted to try iMovie anyway. So I'm use to having two different timelines for the audio and the video. iMovie only gives me one for both. Is there a way to unlink the audio and video channels? I would have thought this concept would be pretty universal for all video editors. What if you want to drop an insert clip over the audio or unsync the audio and video altogether?

Scroll down here: http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie ..to "Advanced Techniques" at lower-left, in particular "Working with Audio Clips" and "Working with Background Audio"..
..all you need to know is there in the Tutorials..

  • Detaching separate video and audio tracks

If I import a video file without audio, and then a music file, why does FCPx snap them together in a way that, if I want to move the first 20 seconds of the clip further away, when I move it forward, it takes the audio track with it?, how can I detach it?

As you can see in the image attached, theese green lines seem to keep united both tracks (or track sectors)

  • Recording Video and Audio at Same time with simultaneous sync

I want to record a keyboard performance into garageband and at the same time record the playing of that performance with my video camera. Then I want to create a movie using the music from garageband and the video from the camera. I was thinking that if I can sync the video and audio when I'm recording the session, then that part is taken care of. Or, maybe this is easier than I think it is?
Is there a way to do this so that I can use the garageband record performance and have it synced to the video on the camera?
I don't want to use the audio from the video camera because the performance that is captured in Garageband will be much better and I can do editing of the individual notes in GB.
In the end, I just want to make a movie and/or podcast of the performance.
I'm a newbie regarding this, but I did search the forums and couldn't find anything specific. Mostly it was about importing video into GB3 and then syncing new audio. I'll basically have audio and video from the same performance in two separate locations and I want to bring them together perfectly in Garageband.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Okay. I got the video and audio all together. I told you I'd link to it when it was up.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxssYpUNJm8
There's also a copy of it at http://www.myspace.com/bonjimmy/
And as a quick side comment, even though I uploaded the same video to both YouTube and MySpace, the MySpace version is much better. YouTube must do something to the video after it's uploaded.
What I learned doing this project:
I recorded the video first (which gave me the sequencing of the piano performance) and then I dubbed the audio in later. However, there wasn't a good way to sync the video and the prerecorded piano, so there are some spots where the dubbed audio vocal isn't accurate to the video. I'm not sure what the pros do for this. I was hoping I'd remember how I sang for the video but when a couple weeks go by before re-doing the audio, it's about impossible. I tried, though.
I remember working with an old 4-track and smpte to a sequencer a long time ago. With the way it is now, it's pretty cool that you can record digitally and mix and match and everything falls together perfectly as long as you have a place to match the video and the audio. It's pretty cool.
    What else???
Does anyone have suggestions that would have made it better? Also, if you have suggestions on my performance or whatever, I'd love comments, but you can do that on the linked page.
Thanks again for all your help. (The point of the video is because I'm thinking about getting back out there and doing some more playing... I'm looking for a band or something else interesting...)

  • IMovie lags when editing video and audio

I just bought iMovie yesterday from the Mac App Store. I recorded a DJ set and wanted to edit my Video with better quality audio that i recorded seperately. I find that when editing my video and audio (Matching up audio), there is alot of lag. Especially when scrolling through the video to drag the audio to a certain point to get the audio in sync. This is very frustrating and i feel i just got cheated paying for iMovie 11 when it cant even do a simple job. Please help me resolve this. Thank you!

    Hi
This is not easy in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 -
What and how did You record the extra audio ? With what tool ?
To be able to keep audio in sync should be recorded with a device with TimeCode. Else it will be near to impossibly. Or extremely tedious even if FinalCut is used.
I would use FinalCut and keep original audio on track 1 and 2 - and the extra on track 3 and 4. Then Show Wave-form - then see if they can match up to each others.
But doing this in iMovie - is nearly impossibly.
IF AUDIO HAS - TimeCode - and there are no drop outs on video or audio then You should be able to exchange original audio with the extra recorded one in iMovie and even move it frame by frame (1/30 sec or 1/25 sec) - in FinalCut audio can be moved much more exact eg 1/100 sec or within a frame
(my miniDisc recorder - is FAR away from exact enough for this)

    Hi
    In iMovie'11 (version 9.0.x)
    on top menu row - Apple/iMovie/File/Edit/Cut (Can vary dep. on language - in Swedish Apple/iMovie/Arkiv/Redigera/Klipp . . . )
down Cut menu - Slow playback/Raspid Playback/Re-play in Slow Motion and onvards
Here one can select the Pre-Set speeds
Are you familiar with getting 'inspector' to run?
No - but I guess that Double Click on clip/sequense or ctrl-Click on it might open it.

  • How do I find out which computer I sync music, videos and photos on?

I am about to update my iPhone to iOS 4.2 but it tells me that to preserve my media, I should apply this update on "the computer where you sync music, videos and photos". How do I find out what that computer is?

You should be regularly backing up then you can just move your library to a new computer and sync there.
If you don't have one then you will have to transfer purchases (grab a 3rd party program for non-purchased content) and then sync to the new computer

  • Video and Audio not in sync after capture

    Hi there,
This is probably a common problem, I have trawled the site but can't seem to find and explanation for it.
I'm capturing vide/audio into final cut pro from my SONY DVR. The video i have streaming into the sony DVR is from a small covert video device which records video/audio onto an SD card. SO I'm running that into the DVR and then DVR is outputting that as DV PAL firewire (uncontrollable device).
I'm capturing the 40 minutes of video as one clip, and when i drag it into the timeline the audio and video are WAY out of sync. Is there a simple reason for why this is happening?
It's almost as if not capturing it right.
    I hope someone can help,
    Thanks in advance.
    Jamie McIntyre

It is interesting that you are having this problem. I recently purchased a brand new Mac Pro (a week ago) and I am using Premiere Pro and it is doing the exact same thing. I mean this video and audio is REALLy out of sync. I tried capturing an hour at a time, and 30 minutes at a time. Still, no luck. I was debating on getting Final Cut, but after reading this post I am rethinking not only Final Cut, but using Apple all together. Part of me thinks that it is not a Premiere or Final Cut problem but a Mac OS problem. But hey, what do I know. I only edit for a living.

  • N95 Recorded Video: Video and audio is out of sync

Audio and video is out of sync when I play videos recorded with N95 on my PC. If have used different PC applications to play the video, but all exhibit the same problem.
In the beginning of at video it seems that the audio is about 400milliseconds ahead of the video - you hear the sound first. The different in audio and video is not constant. In a long video (30-50minutes) it is quite unpretictable how video and audio is out of sync in the end.
To experience the problem yourself record a long video sequence with a N95.
1 .Record something where it is easy to see if video and audio is in sync.
    2. Transfer the recording to a PC.
    3. Play the recording using VLC (www.videolan.org)
Another way to experience the problem is to convert the recording to AVI format at play it in MediaPlayer or WindowsMovieMaker. To convert a N95 video recording to AVI format use Mp4Cam2Avi.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/
The video recording settings I use on my N95 are:
    Best Quality
    No Video Stablisation
    Firmware version 21.0.0.16.
I think the video quality of N95 recordings is quite good, so I would really like to be able to view and edit the recorded vidoes on my PC.

I've seen this issue, but it's not so critical for me. It doesn't happen 100% of the time or in most situations it's very hard to see.
You can edit videos on your PC, just converting them to AVI then using any Video Editor on the PC.
Yes while editing separate the audio channel from the clip and reinsert at the begining of the clip. This will minimise sync issues. To get accurate sync increase the timeline so that you are able to the see audio squiggles as a waveform.
