Time Machine and Airport Express

Got Time Machine to work with a Mini and my AEBS after the 7.3.1 upgrade. Did the full initial backup with no problem. However, I then had my Macbook backing up to the same AEBS and USB drive for several hours and the Mini's Time Machine tried and failed to do an incremental backup. Now I get a "disk is read only" error when I tried do perform a Time Machine backup and the error message recommends reformatting the drive. I'm now verifying the disk with Disk Utility.
1. Has anyone been able to have two Macs share an AEBS drive for Time machine without conflicts?
2. I initially set up each Mac on a separate partition on the USB drive. Is that recommended or should they share a partition?

In theory it should work, but I don't think you need to partition the drive as TM should manage each drive's backup separately.

  • Has anyone had had success with Time Machine and Airport Express 6th gen?

For the last six months I have attempted to use the Time Machine product to provide first level backup for my two MacBook Airs and iMac.  Tryed a number of powered USB drives, tryed all of the current 10.8, 10.9 OSX software.  The Time Machine product seems to work for about a month to six weeks and then fails with message about the file integrity or access problems.  In all cases I can acess files on the drive and the only application that struugles with the AE usb drive is Time Machine.
You would think that if it works for a month it should work for a year?
I have purchased Carbon Copy Cloner and it seems to function without a problem and I think that I am probably better off with a once a day clone than a Time Machine with data integrity problems.
Has anyone had long term success with Time Machine and AE sixth gen?

You are connecting a USB hard disk to the new 802.11ac AirPort Extreme, not an Express, correct? If so, it works fine with both bus powered and self-powered drive enclosures, and I have no immediate explanation for what's going on.
You would think that if it works for a month it should work for a year?
Yes, besides the passage of time the only thing that is changing is the amount of available space on the backup volume, which could be a factor. Are you using separate drives for each Mac, or are they all being backed up to the same drive? If it's only one drive, is it partitioned or are they all sharing a single partition?
Are you sharing backup volumes with other, non-Time Machine files? That shouldn't cause the problem, but it's not a good idea.

  • Question about Time Capsule and Airport Express co-existence

I have a new 3TB ME182LL/A Time Capsule attached to my wired home LAN, in bridge mode.  It works fine both as an access point on the upper floors of my home and as a Time Machine device. I also have an Airport Express, whose function in my network is solely to control my whole-house audio system from ITunes. I don't need, want, or use the wireless networking features of the Airport Express. I just have an audio cable running from it to my stereo, and an Ethernet patch cable connects it to my wired LAN.  The network mode in the Airport Express is set to "off".  Historically, the Airport Express has worked fine in this wired lan mode.  However, I unplugged it at some point while having some initial trouble deploying the new Time Capsule and only turned it back on today.  After turning it back on I observed something strange. My speedy wireless connection upstairs via the Time Capsule became slow. And when I launched Airport Utility, it drew a network diagram which showed my Time Capsule as a CLIENT of the Airport Express. In other words, the network diagram showed Internet at the top, then a vertical line down the the Airport Express, then the Time Capsule below that.  The correct / desired diagram would be the Time Capsule and Airport express as peers.  I connected to the Airport Express and verified that network mode was set to "off" but the incorrect network diagram persisted (as did poor wireless performance) until I unplugged the Airport Express.  After I did that, the Airport Utility drew the network correctly, although of course it showed a yellow caution sign next to the Airport Express, since it was down. And my wireless speed / reliability returned to normal. What is going on here?

The automatic setup in the airport utility has changed something.
Is the line down to the TC from the express dotted.. in other words is wireless??
    Funny stuff happens.
Please post the screenshots of the 3 pages from the airport utility setup for both airport express and TC..
Make sure wireless is set to off in the express.
Both should be set to dhcp on the internet tab and both set to off bridge mode on the network tab.
So for example the bridge on the network tab.
The summary page can also be a help.
There is a half summary page when you click the item in the airport utility.
There is also a fully summary page, when you hold option key and double click the TC icon for example.

  • Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0 & ...

I have a question regards Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0 & AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n* Firmware 7.3.1
I have a new (Feb 2008) Mac pro with the airport card internally installed. Do these updates apply to my card & should I install them?
    Thanks,
    Harris

if it shows up in software update, it can be installed. If you are not using Time Machine on a disk connected to the Airport, you can probably skip it, but these updates USUALLY work.
There is always somebody that comes in and cries that "Update YYY Broke My Computer" but generally they go pretty smoothly

  • Apple TV Inference with Time Capsule and Airport express?

I have recently bought an Apple TV 2, which seem to be working fine, however since installing it on my wireless network both my Time Capsule and Airport Express can't be found. Following some fault finding it seems that when I unplug the Apple TV I can reconfingure the TC and AE.
The TC and AE are configured to join my existing network....and have happy sat there for a few years.
I would really welcome any ideas.
    Thanks
    R

    Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds like you have the basic configuration covered correctly.
You might want to check some settings on the TC:
Wireless Mode would be create a wireless network
"Allow this network to be extended" should be checked
The AX should be set to "extend a wireless network"
The "allow wireless clients" box should be checked
In this configuration, the ethernet port on the AX is active so things should work.
A minor point...Although the TC is a dual band device, the AirPort Express is not. Can you make sure that that the Express is connecting to the "main" network on your TC? The "guest" network cannot be "extended".
If you place your laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key while you click on the AirPort icon, some connection information will be displayed. The MAC address of the device that the laptop is connecting to will be indicated. Make sure that that this is the MAC address of the AX, and not the TC.
Another note...If you have not changed the default "main" network, the radio mode is broadcasting 802.11n only at 5 GHz. These higher frequencies are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, if you AX is some distance away, you may not be receiving a strong signal for the device at that location.
If you have a signal strength utility on your laptop (the "bars" at the top of the screen are not a very good indicator of actual signal strength), turn off the AX and take a reading to see what kind of signal the Express is receiving where it is located.
Please post back with your results.

  • I'm trying to install Time Machine and Airport Update V 1.0 but installer

keeps returning error message: You cannot install Time Machine and AirPort Updates on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer.
I am in fact running 10.5.6. Would the fact that this update was dated in March of 2008 have anything to do with it? I think it's the latest update for TM and Airport.
    Any suggestions?

Kappy, how'd you get so smart. On further investigation I discovered that I had already downloaded and installed that update. I will follow your advice in the future, not risking showing off as a fool.

  • Recent Time Machine and Airport Leopard update causes Kernel panic

I had 15 iMac's in a classroom that were all updated to the new Leopard update for Time Machine and Airport. When they restarted, they all gave a kernel panic error. Successive restarts continue with the screen starting with the kernel panic error message and asking for a shutdown.
I am extremely sure that it had to be those updates because they were all fine before that. I doubt 30 pieces of RAM could have gone kaput all at once. Since we have a dual boot setup, if I press the alt key when I restart, I can boot into the Windows side without any problems.
If somebody has had a similar problem and found a way to do something about the kernel error, please let me know. Thanks in advance. I did the usual zapping RAM and stuff. It didn't help.

    From Maxtor's website:
Cannot Erase External Disk Drive Errors in Mac OS X (10.5) - Leopard
    Description
When trying to Erase an external drive in Mac OS X (10.5) Leopard, I get the error, Cannot Erase as seen in this video. How can I resolve this problem?
    Answer
*Leopard (Mac OS X - 10.5) seems to be having problems reformatting external drives. This seems to be a common issue on Leopard that is seen on most brands of drives.*
Note: This is not a problem with the External Drive. Rather, it is an issue with the Disk Utility found with Leopard.
Suggestions - If reformatting the drive in Disk Utility fails, there are two options:
Note: If you got to the point where you attempted to use disk Utility to Erase the external drive and it, failed, you may have to take the drive back to a Windows System to repartition and reformat. Click here to launch a video showing how to prepare an external drive using Windows Vista.
Reformat the drive on an older version of Mac OS X.
Boot off of the MacOS 10.4 DVD, access its Utilities Menu and prepare the external drive using Disk Utility
Backup any data first, take the external drive to another Mac, launch Disk Utility and reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
If another version of Mac OS X is not available:
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Select the external drive and click on the Partition tab
Click on the Current Volume Scheme drop-down menu and divide the drive into 2 (or more) partitions
Click Options. From the Partition Schemes provided, click on the GUID Partition Table radio button. Click OK.
Click Apply. The Partition Disk screen opens.
Click Partition. At this point, the volume dismounts from the desktop and the drive is partitioned and formatted into multiple drives with GUID Partition Table scheme.
Note: When Volumes are created, Time Machine may open asking if you would like to use the volume for backups. Click Cancel to proceed.
When finished, select the Disk Utility from the Apple Menu and choose Quit Disk Utility (recommended)
Relaunch the Disk Utility, select the external drive
and click on the Partition tab
Click on the Current Volume Scheme drop-down menu and select One (1) partition.
Click Options. From the Partition Schemes provided, click on the Apple Partition Map radio button. Click OK. Select other options as desired (e.g., Volume Name, Install Mac OS 9 Drivers, etc.).
Click Apply. The Partition Disk screen opens.
Click Partition. At this point, the volume dismounts from the desktop and the drive is partitioned and formatted into multiple drives with Apple Partition Map scheme.
Note: When Volumes are created, Time Machine may open asking if you would like to use the volume for backups. Click Cancel to proceed.
When finished, select the Disk Utility from the Apple Menu and choose Quit Disk Utility (recommended)

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • Can I use time machine through airport express and an external hard drive?

I want to be able to use time machine remotely. I own a WD 1TB passport external hard drive. If I connect it to an airport express, will it backup my macbook pro?

Not sure what you mean by "remotely".  Remotely on your network, or remotely over the Internet?
In either case, the AirPort Express does not support a hard drive.  You would need an AirPort Extreme for that.
Trying to use Time Machine over the Internet is incredibly slow and unreliable. Remember, you are uploading. Upload speeds are often 10 times slower than download speeds with most Internet Service Providers.

  • Networking time machine to airport express

i am trying to extend my wirelass to my barn.
i bought a 328ft cat6a patch cable and am planning to bury it.
i want to keep the time machine (A1355) in the house and have the express (A1084) in the barn.
before doing so, i plugged it into the back of my time machine in the second port (i have a microcell cellular booster plugged into the first) and then into the airport express.
ignorantly, i thought it would be that easy.
now, when plugged in, i can't use either network. i'm sure it's some setup procedure that i just can't figure out.
i unplugged so that i can beg for help. Bob Timmons, you seem to be the answer man. Please help.
    thanks

Do you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system, or a PC?
One of these computers will be needed to set up the AirPort Express A1084 that you have, since Mavericks (10.9.1) does not support the older versions of the Express.
Apple, of course, wants you to buy a new Express, which would provide about twice the performance of the older A1084....and it will ony take a minute or two to setup with your Mavericks Mac.

  • How do I connect both iMac (2011) hard drives to backup with Time Machine and Airport Time capsule?

Hi - my iMac has 2 hard drives, 250 Gb solid state and a 2 Tb drive.  I'm backing up using time Machine to an Airport time Capsule but only the 250 Gb drive comes up in hte list?  All my photos are on the 2 Tb drive (about 120GB worth) and I want a back up for these. I'm running under OS X 10.9.1 Maverick
Any help would be greatly appreaciated!

    Ok.. I am surprised..
What did you format the 2TB drive.. I find it hard to imagine you formatted an internal drive anything but Mac OS extended journaled (HFS+) .. but you could have.
Time Machine can only backup HFS+ format drives.
Of course this Mavericks.. and in Mavericks the bugs rein supreme in Time Machine.
Reset TM setup.. See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Make sure the 2TB drive is mounted when you redo the TM setup.
To be honest.. I would also buy CCC and do a full clone of the drive..
TM is great for the occasional file loss.. but it is lousy to restore a drive. CCC at the moment is $40 or so and IMHO money well spent.
    http://www.bombich.com/
I use it but just to say I have no connection to them..

  • I have a time capsule and airport express one floor lower, the signal keeps dropping. Would an airport extreme give me a longer range for wifi?

I have several computers. My equipment is upstairs in a house, apple time capsule and downstairs airport express. Lately the downstairs computer keeps disconnecting from the internet. Would replacing the airport express with and airport extreme give me a greater range for my wifi connections?

Yes.  Question is... would the difference be enough.
The extreme has a bigger & more powerful antena array. But if that alone still doesn't suffice, you also have the option to use the express to EXTEND from the Extreme.
