Time Machine backups slowing down after 25 days

I am experiencing a peculiar kind of behaviour from Time Machine under
Mountain Lion (10.8.2). In the multiple threads on Time Machine issues,
I could not find this exact problem described so I am wondering if
anyone else has seen the same thing or even has a solution.
Like for many others, the basic symptom is that Time Machine becomes
extremely slow. In my case this always happens about 25 days after the
last reboot. I am using a Mid 2010 27-inch IMAC and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro,
both connected to a Time Capsule via ethernet. Both are showing the
same behaviour.
Originally I was letting Time Machine do its regular hourly backups,
this has now been changed to twice a day using TimeMachineEditor. The
change has made no difference, backups are still getting slow after
25 days. This is accompanied by kernel_task gradually ramping up
its CPU usage, from below a percent to several percent.
Here are the backupd entries from a "normal" backup:
This takes 3-4 min, which I find tolerable - although I
am always surprised by the rather large number of files that
are backed up even if the machine has remained idle:

I have now rebooted the machine, and things are back to normal.
In about 25 days, I fully expect that things will start to grind to
a halt again. On the MacPro, which has now been running for 16
days, things should be fine for another 9-10 days.

These are the messages from the first slow backup. This one was only marginally slower than a normal backup, but a sure sign that things were going awry nonetheless:

  • Time Machine backups slow down TC internet connection

I'm having a problem with my TC internet connection slowing down dramatically. When I connect my DSL modem directly to my Mini, it's fine. When I connect it to the TC there are big slow downs off and on. I'm wondering if the backups done by TM slow down the internet connection and the network as a whole.

Over ethernet no, it would have almost no effect.. over wireless yes.. it can have a big effect.
How big are the backups generally? These should only be incremental and relatively small.
Measure your actual speed of copying a file to the TC.. if you can put numbers to it, that will help. Use the Activity Monitor and see what is the average speed copying a file or when TM is backing up.
Any improvements to the wireless speed will reduce the time the backup runs and how much time your internet is slow. Wireless is highly range and signal dependent. You might find a network rearrangement where you use the TC close to the Mini can solve the issue.. especially if you can connect to it by ethernet.. and then wireless bridge if you need to.

  • Time Machine WIFI slows down and Fine after I unplug it?

My Time Machine WIFI slows down to an absolute crawl and then after I unplug it and plug it back in, it's back to normal. Can someone help me?

My Time Machine WIFI slows down to an absolute crawl and then after I unplug it and plug it back in, it's back to normal.
This is a classic case of the effects of wireless interference from other networks around you. See the link at the bottom for more information about this.
It might first help to understand why things improve when you unplug the Time Capsule and then power it back up. When you do this, the Time Capsule will scan to find the best available wireless channels to use at the time.
Unfortunately, other wireless routers are doing the same thing all the time, so after a few hours or a day or two, the channel(s) that the Time Capsule was using become overcrowded and the wireless slows down to a crawl. Cordless phones can also create interference issues for a wireless network as well as any number of other electronic devices.
Unless you can convince other users around you to turn off their wireless routers, there is not much that you are going to be able to do to come up with a permanent fix. For now, locate the Time Capsule as far away from any outside walls in your home as possible and use the 5 GHz band for as many connections as you can.
A friend of mine who recently moved into a new apartment complex has the same problem. He has to restart his wireless router at least twice a day, sometimes more on the weekends.  Too many wireless networks.....not enough channels.

  • Time Machine backups only work after restart

    Hi
Getting frustrated as Time Machine backups only work after a restart. Work for a few hours and then get stuck with Backing up: XXMB of XXGB. I have left it on this for many hours ie overnight without completion
    I have a Mid 2014 MBP 13 in running 10.10.2
I backup onto an external USB via a hub.
Things I have tried with review of Pondini great site which has helped with different TM backup problems.
Disk permissions and repair of SSD on MBP (were errors but did not solve issue)
    Direct USB connection
    Backup via Airport Extreme
    Re-index spotlight
    Reformat USB disk
    New USB disk!
Below is log (backupd filtered) of latest backup attempts including final completed occuring after restart.
    Any help gratefully received

    Backup completed successfully.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1295 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1536 450 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!

  • Time machine backup slow

A few days ago I upgraded to 10.7.5. Since then I am NOT ABLE to complete a time machine backup. Last run was 12 hours and only 20% of the changes were backed up. In addition suddenly spotlight started to reindex and this also takes forever. Plus an important utility "EOS Utility" for managing pictures coming from Canon EOS cameras don't work any more. As soon as I plug in a camera the application quits.
All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
    What's happening?

All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
Yes it was. Now it's not:
    time machine slow in 10.7.5
Time Machine backup very slow in Lion
Summary: the upgrade broke Spotlight, which manifests itself in absurdly slow Time Machine performance.
We just have to wait for Apple to fix it.
Don't know if your Canon EOS utility is related or not. Probably not I would think.

  • Time machine Backups slow

It is best I describe my setup first.
I have a mid 2011 iMac and a late 2008 MBP that both backup to Time Machine.
The Backups are on a HD attached to the iMac. The Hard Drive is partitioned, one for each Time Machine Backups. So the iMac backs up directly, and the MBP backs up over my wireless network, and "through" the iMac.
This setup has run fine for nearly a Year under Lion. After upgrading to ML on both machines, the Time Machine Back ups on the iMac are fast as before, but the MBP backups are very much slower than before. As I had swapped the HD in the MBP for a SSD about a Month ago, I wondered if all these changes had caused some problem with Time Machine, so I reformatted the MBP backup partition & did a brand new backup. This took about 36 Hours for 90GB, and the subsequent backups still seem slow, though a little better
I understand the Apple do not encourage this way of backing up, but as the problem did not exist before, any suggestions on a fix, or just a matter of waiting for Apple?

Take a look over at the Lion discussion area.. there is a huge bug in the Lion update that just came through.
Everybody is struggling with TM and Spotlight.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190305?tstart=0
There are many more threads but at 29pages and counting this is the biggest.. 100,000views suggest a lot of people are in your boat .. if that is of any comfort.
At least you can sink together!!
This is what comes of trying to keep two OS up to date at once.. they manage testing on neither.

  • Will Time Machine backup still exist after fresh install of Lion?

Hi all. I have a MacBook Pro and I've come to the conclusion that I need to do a fresh installation to solve several problems I've been having. My question involves my Time Machine backup. I have a complete, current backup on a USB drive.
After I do the fresh installation, rather than copy everything from the backup (and possibly bringing the problems with it) I would like to just selectively restore certain things. I know how to do all this.
The question I have is, after I set up my new system, what will happen if I activate Time Machine and point it to the same USB drive that has my current backup? Will it erase the backup, or will it create a new backup alongside the old one (there's plenty of room on the drive) or will it simply append the backup, treating it just like a new checkpoint in the incremental backup? I guess I'm hoping for the third option, because then I would be able to go back into Time Machine in case I forget something or want to copy something from my old system, even after I finish setting up the new one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you erase a drive, it gets a new UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier).  That's what OSX uses to keep track of drives, not their names.  So it's treated as a different disk.
If you do a full system restore, or use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer the data from your backups, that leaves a "trail" that Time Machine uses to figure out what's happened, and "associate" the "new" drive with the old backups.  The next backup will be only an "incremental" one, of what's new or changed, and the new and old backups will all be treated as if they'd been done from the "new" drive.
However, if you restore things "piecemeal," there's no trail.  Time Machine will make a new, full backup of the "new" drive.  You can still see and restore from the "old" ones, via the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
But if you use the exact same short user names (home folder names), then you may be able to force Time Machine to "associate" the "new" drive with the old backups.  See #B6 in the Troubleshooting article for instructions.

  • Time Machine backup slow (not first backup) - Why?

Hi, I recently purchased a new 3TB backup drive to backup my iMac system (10.9.4).
I set up a Time Machine backup of my system + external HD, and began scheduled backups about a week ago. As expected the first backup took several hours (overnight) since it was backing up  nearly 1TB of data. Subsequent backups were fast and everything seemed fine.
Then, last night I ran a backup and Time Machine began to copy ALL the data again. The backup took 6-7 hours. Why would it do this if it uses a cumulative system where most of the data is already on the backup drive? Did this occur because I manually started the backup (by selecting"Back Up Now" in Time Machine on the toolbar). Or is something wrong?
    Thanks
    Tom

Open Time Machine Preferences>click "Select Disk">click on the appropriate TM disk under the bottom window titled "Available Disks." Force a backup and see if it works. If this doesn't fix it reboot your iMac and/or Time Capsule and try forcing a backup again once the iMac and/or TC have fully booted up.

  • Time machine backup files disappeared after moving from Osx 10.6 to 10.8.2 .

I had moved from a 6+ year old iMac to a new one with 10.8.2

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I don't think that they have disappeared. They are just "hidden" in your Time Machine drive because Time Machine detects your old backups as for a different Mac than the one you are using right now.
In order to see your old Time Machine backups, read > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html

  • Time Machine backups not available after Lion upgrade

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion a week ago. Today I went to my Time Machine (backups on a Time Capsule), and can't access old files. Past dates are shown in purple, with dates since the Lion update in the usual gray. However, none of them show any files. Any ideas?

  • Time Machine backup slow in copying phase

I've had a gander through Pondini's (excellent!) site and other locations, but still can't seem to get TM to backup at a regular pace.
I've got it connected via ethernet, but with about 500GB to backup and a copying speed that managed to do only 40GB in 14 hours, it's waaaaaay too slow.  Current message says "Backing up: 44.01 GB of 499.82 GB"
I've done various things like removing Sophos for Mac, relaunching Finder, checking the Activity Monitor to see if there's anything hogging CPU, re-booted my My Book Live NAS and a few other things besides.  Nothing's helped.  Below is a copy/paste of details from EtreCheck.  Can anyone help?

In case it's useful to someone who stumbles on this some time in future, I had another look at Pondini's site and found mention of TechTool Pro causing issues, of which  I'm running v7.
I went into System Settings/TechToolProtection and Disabled protection features.  After a minute or so, I got a bump in speed, with TM now copying a GB every 4 - 5 minutes.  Still very slow, but something of an improvement.

  • Time Machine backup taking forever after 10.6.2

After installing 10.6.2, Time Machine is taking ages to back up 3.2GB to my USB external drive. It is taking so long, in fact, that it has not done a single backup since I installed the latest update on November 9 — my computer did not stay up and on long enough for it to complete one back up. Today, it has been running non-stop for some ten hours and has so far done 104 MB of the 3.2GB. This is crazy. It did happen in the past that backups took a long time after a major update, but never this long.
Everything worked fine before the 10.6.2 update. Is anyone else having similar problems?

Ok, so here’s what happened since the last post.
I did what you recommended: had the external hard drive “repaired” (the disk utility said it was ok), and started the backup again, and again it was excruciatingly slow (it had backed up 40MB after five hours or so).
At that point I decided to erase the backup volume and start anew (after formatting etc). But again it got stuck after backing up 3.5GB out of 180GB. The Time Machine widget said “Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed” and “Waiting for index to be ready”. I again stopped the backup and did what your guide recommended. I excluded the backup volume from Spotlight and restarted the process. This time it worked. The backup was complete in reasonable time and has been working fine since.
The only problem is Spotlight. After the backup, I removed the Time Machine volume from the “do not index list”, but Spotlight does not seem to have responded. It either has not indexed the backup volume or is not admitting it: searching for anything inside Time Machine always returns “no results”.
Thanx a lot for your help. If you can give me a hint on how to get Spotlight working again, I’d be really, really grateful.

  • Time machine backup takes forever after full restore

My HD went haywire yesterday but luckily I was able to restore everything from my backup (and the Mac even got a speedier, yay).
But for some reason I can take new backups. Time machine works forever, seemingly want to replace most files on the backup (250 GB, 500000+ files) and have now for more than 12 hours stood at “44 MB backed up”. The problem repeats itself when I stop and retry the back up procedure.
I have tried to create a new back up on the same Time Machine drive but I am unable to rename the old “backup.backudb” folder, so thats not a solution.
    ANy ideas?

After a restore Time Machine will back up everything again.  Because of that, if possible the initial backup should be done over Ethernet, not Wi-Fi.  See item D3 on this post.

  • Time Machine backup not syncing after changed wifi network

I have an AirPort Extreme wireless router and have been backing up over my wifi network using an added hard drive on the USB port. I recently had to restore the AirPort Extreme and changed the password for the wireless network and now Time Machine wants to completely reformat the hard drive and start over.
Does anybody know how to bypass this and just continue to add to the current backups?

Well I can have a go at answering you questions
Is it necessary to upgrade to OSX Server if I wish to use the server a Time Machine target for Mabooks running Mountain Lion?
I'm not sure about this one as it didn't check before I upgraded my server to Mountain Lion but I would be suprised if a Lion Server (10.7.4) could not back up a Mountain Lion (10.8) client
If I do upgrade to OSX Server, is it also necessary to upgrade all the Macbooks to Mountain Lion?
No, I am running a mix of 10.8 and 10.7.4 clients with a 10.8 server and they all backup with Time Machine.
Is OSX Server stable enough to bother with at this time?
This is a very subjective area - my server is running well using Mountain Lion, it's not used heavily as it's mainly for backing up a few clients, running the built in wiki, web server, calendar and contacts.  It's running fine and I like the additions enough to put up with the bugs [single sign on / kerberos is the one impacting me].  However if you search here you can find other who are having many more issues. This one is a personal choice you'll have to make.
For the server app, you have to run the same version across the server and the client to use it, you can always use screen share to get to the server and run the server app directly on the server.  This is what I do when using a 10.7.4 client.
Hope this helps with you decisions.
