Time machine cannot complete backup  sparse bundle already in use

I'm getting an error message: time machine unable to complete backup, sparse bundle already in use?
Please advise, I need to find the "yellow brick road", guess it wouldn't be cool for a guy to click red slipper heels together?
Help? Much appreciated....

What constructive purpose do these smart mouth answere provide? I have been through the "more like this" discussions and the mostly have answers referring you to  "more like this". The troubleshooting links refer to old and outdated systems. After all these years, doesn't anyone have an intellrgent suggestion? Is there any way to make the Time Machine backups dependible? It's not worth the trouble to have to reconnect by USB, reboot the time machine, etc. every couple of weeks.

  • Time Machine cannot complete backup

My time machine backup cannot complete because it thinks there is not enough disk space.  After trying a number of things, I decided to start over by reformatting my backup disk (I have a secondary backup).  I have a 2TB external disk.  I have a 2TB internal disk that is 95GB full.  Certainly there must be some overhead for the backup process, but it can't double the backup.  I'm trying to do a full backup on an empty, newly formatted disk.  The message is:
The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly.  Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup.
    I'm using OSX Mavericks 10.9.4

  • Time machine cannot complete backups - please help

I hope somebody can help me - my Time Machine has been unable to complete backups for about six weeks or so.
Having read some useful information on the support forums yesterday, I verified both my internal HD and my external disk. The external disk appears fine, yesterday my internal disc needed some 'minor repairs'. I booted from the Leopard disk, but could not find where to repair disk so simply verified disk again and it was apparently fine.
I have verified both disks today and they are again fine. However when I try to back up I get this message:

    one thing you can try
Open system prefs and go to spotlight, in the privacy section add your Macintosh HD and any other drives you back up.  Give it a few seconds then remove your Macintosh HD and any other drives you added.  Close system preferences.  Watch the spotlight symbol on the top menu bar "looks like a magnifying glass".  It should have a dot in it as in is indexing all your drives again.  When the indexing is over (it can take a long time of your drive is big) now try to create a new backup with time machine...."
As usual, it's gonna take a couple days to see if it works.  I'll let y'all know...and y'all should try it also, and let us know.

  • Time Machine Error cannot write to sparse bundle -- file in use.

We're having trouble with a Time Machine backup. Twice in the last three days, the backups failed with the error message that the backup disk image is already in use.  I noticed that the partition containing the backup sparse bundle is mounted twice in /Volumes -- /Volumes/X and /Volumes/X-1. The error message refers to /Volumes/X-2.
The icon that appears on the desktop has not cleared as if it's still doing a backup.
Looking at the sparsebundle directly gives me the "verificationstate" as 1 -- I recall reading that this is supposed to 0. Other values:
    verificationdate == 2012-06-05, and VerificationExtendedSkip == false.
Note that the backup drive is attached to another Mac still running Leopard. This is run fine for years over a gigabit network.
    Any ideas?

OK, we fixed this for now with the simple, but common Mac way of
    throwing something in the trash.
In this case it seems to be a temporary network connection to the remote Time Machine partition. When Time Machine balks, the icon for the temporary mount gets stuck on the Desktop. We threw it in the trash (unmounting it) and then Time Machine can resume.
Apple networking is annoying, but then on the other, it's easy. We lose printing in a similar way.
Anyway, although we seem to be OK, I'd like to understand this a bit better. I can see in the "/Volumes" folder (in Terminal) three Time Machine mounts, not one as I would have expected, and they all appear to point to the same place:
    drwx------   9 root                   wheel  264   Jun 22 10:23 TM-2
    drwx------   9 root                   wheel  264  Jun 22 10:23 TM-1
    drwx------   9 MYUSERNAME  staff   264 Jun 22 10:23 TM
On the remote machine, the disc TM appears only once.
If you look at the listing of all three, they are identical. What gives?
Is this a consequence of the fact that we are putting the time machine backups on a remote machine (that is not a Mac OS server). We have to mount the remote disc before Time Machine will run, but from that point it works perfectly -- or as perfectly as any mac networking thing seems to work.

  • Does Time Machine make complete backups of Virtual Machines?

I am new to the forums, so forgive me if this has been asked before.
I have a MacBook Pro and have VMWare Fusion 3 installed.
I have Windows 7 and XP installed as virtual machines, and use an external hard drive to back up into using Time Machine. I have been given conflicting information regarding the backups being created by Time Machine.
I have been told that I should use a Windows backup program such as Acronis to back up the Windows installations separately from the Mac backups on the separate hard drive.
Someone else has told me that if I use Time Machine, then the Windows installations will be backed up automatically, as the Windows installations are effectively folders and files within the Mac software.
Just to confuse things, I have read somewhere that Time Machine cannot back up Boot partitions of Windows installations, but I can't remember where I read this.
I don't want to lose my Windows installations through not understanding the backup capabilities of Time Machine, so I am hoping that someone here can advise me as to what the best course of action would be please.
Can I trust Time Machine to back everything up and to be able to restore my whole machine, including Windows installations, from a Time Machine backup, or do I need to back up the Windows virtual machines separately by using Acronis.
    Thanks
    Kevin

    1. TM will not backup a Boot Camp Windows volume.
    2. TM will backup a VM disc image every time it changes unless you have excluded it via TM's Exclude list.
    3. If the VMs change often then TM will backup each change thus consuming large amounts of space on the backup drive which is not recommended. Thus, it's best to backup VMs separately from within Windows using a Windows backup utility.
    4. TM will not backup individual files and folders of a VM disc image. It will only backup the entire disc image.

  • Time machine: cannot access backups

Time Machine seems to backup correctly: it reports the correct time of backup and I can see the right timestamp in Finder.
However I cannot access any backup in the Star Wars interface: when I open it I see some time indications  by the timeline, one second later I see the timeline without any time indications except Now and Today. Thus I cannot access my backups.

How can I fix this issue with Time Machine?:
    "The+backup+disk+image+“%2FVolumes%2FGoFlex+Home+Backup%2FJohn’s+MacBook+Air.spa rsebundle”+could+not+be+accessed+(error+(null))."

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

Disconnect the power from your backup device, wait two minutes, then reconnect the power. This usually solves the problem.

  • Time machine cannot complete follow-up backups

I reformated  my USB 3 external drive and after 16 or so hours, my Time Machine backup completed without giving off an error message. However, I leave 'Auto Backups' turned on and subsequent backups fail with a useless, uninformative error message (Backup Failed). This has happened several times with at least two separate disks.
AppleCare tells me the backup was corrupted. But having to endure another 16 hour backup is not ideal, everytime I change data on my computer. I store one external disk offsite in my safety deposit box at all times.
Should I just put time Machine 'in my rear view mirror' and use Carbon Copy Cloner, which I own?
