Time Machine - Date & Time format problem

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I was unable to find it. Following a change I made to the Date & Time prefs in order for the complete date to show in the menu bar I am now unable to determine the time a backup was made or anything else for that matter.
I made the modification via the International Preferences - Formats pane, but this did not display as I wanted and I have since gone back to how it was originally or so I thought! Now all the time stamps are showing as a five or six digit number. Does anyone know have to change this back!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Do you mean in the TM Interface +(Enter Time Machine)?+
If so, try turning TM off, selecting the "none" drive, quitting System Preferences, then going back and re-selecting the drive.
If that doesn't work, try a "full reset:"
Turn TM Off, de-select the drive, note any exclusions in Options, quit System Preferences.
Delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (in your top-level Library folder, not your home folder).
Re-select your drive (and re-enter any exclusions).
Do a +Back Up Now+ or wait for the next scheduled backup.

How can I remove all Time Machine data from an external HD, while retaining the other folders/files on the disk?

I recently replaced my old Macbook Pro with a new Macbook Pro Retina.
The original MBP had Time Machine set up on an external HD, and I also had some manually saved/backed up files (stuff that didn't need incremental backups; very old stuff) on the disk as well, in folders. This worked fine and well for the life of the original MBP.
When I set up the MBPr, I did not elect to transfer everything over from a Time Machine disk, as I wanted a Fresh Install; I chose to just re-download/install the apps I needed from the App Store. Much cleaner, more stable. I updated to Yosemite immediately so, it gave me more of a clean install.
The problem is, Time Machine now won't read any Time Machine backups from that disk. Migration assistant can pull data from it, but it's a bit wonky. It was easier to just manually copy over what I needed.
Now, I just want to "reset", and completely remove the old Time Machine data from the external hard drive, since it is completely useless to me now (I can't access it on this computer, and it's taking up space). I want to remove the Time Machine data, as if it were never there, but keep my other folders/files that are on the disk (so, a format is not feasible).
I will then set the disk up as a new, fresh Time Machine disk for the new MBPr.
What is the proper method for removing Time Machine data from an external disk (which doesn't seem to be associated with this machine anyway)? I know a simple rm -rf will cause problems.

I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
* Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
* I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
* I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
* I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
* Select 'Erase Destination'
* Select 'Restore'
* I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
* I enter my password
Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
* Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
* I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
"Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

If i use time machine and then format my macbook will i find back everything i have on my external drive once i have restored the content on my macbook like itunes library, folders and all?

I would like to format the computer but before doing so, I'd like to be sure that all my files will be there when i restore the time machine on my formatted macbook like my iTunes library and all that.

How to restore my time machine data

well apparently it restored my applications and took up almost 40GBs but my mac still doesnt look like my previous one which i just replace today , so how do i restore my computer back to its old time machine data and get my GB's that were wasted back ?

I would recommend a couple of things to help you. First is complete your profile we have no idea what machine you have or the OS X version you're using. Because we don't know that no one can accurately give you any information. Next I'd recommend going to the Time Machine FAQ that is located in the version of OS X you are using. If you are on Leopard, go to that forum, if your are on Snow Leopard go to that forum. TM is part of OS X so it's logical the forums are part of the OS X section.
My last recommendation is to read the TM FAQ where you will learn more about how it works.

Time Machine is not an archival backup. It keeps backups of what is currently on the volumes it is backing up. If you delete a file off of your hard drive, at some point, Time Machine may delete the backup copy of that file to make room for backups of what is there. If you don't run out of space, it may never delete them, but you shouldn't depend on it.
If you are archiving those files on other hard drives, and Time Machine is backing up those drives, then it will always keep a backup of those files that are on the other drives.
You shoul always keep at least two copies of your important data files, each on separate backups. So, if you archived the files to other drives, you need at least one backup of that drive, along with at least one backup of your internal hard drive.
If you want an archival backup, you might consider a second backup system like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper, or one of the other backup options. They will make an exact copy of your drive, then add changes as incremental backups. Everything that ever was on your Mac will still be in those backups. But, keep in mind that backup may contain the only copy of the files you are deleting off your Mac, so you would only have one copy of those files.
It sounds like you are moving those files to other disks, so that is good. But, if you are not backing up those drives, you don't really have a backup of those files.

Move old time machine data

Hi all
I want to move a large amount (about 150GB) of old time machine data from one external hard drive to another so I can use the hard drive for other things. The time machine data is not part of my current time machine backup but an old one (from the same computer) that might come in handy one day
When I try to copy it tells me that I have 13 hours to go. I would like some ways to copy/move the data so that it the copy is interrupted I can resume at the same place.
Any ideas

That sounds terribly long, depending on the speed and connection of the drives involved. If they're daisy-chained, or both on the same USB hub, try connecting them separately (and both directly, if at all possible). If either is USB, be sure it's connected directly to your Mac, not a port on a keyboard.
Also exclude the drive you're copying TO from Spotlight indexing (System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy), and both from any anti-virus scanning.

No way. A set of Time Machine backups is like a database -- the backups are all intricately linked together, so can't be copied in stages.
Do you really need all the backups, or just the final one? If just the final one, try restoring it (to the new drive instead of your Mac's internal HD), per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

This is really difficult to the point of not really worth it.
Keep the old TM backups in archive.. and start afresh on the TC.
Time Machine has a different way of backing up on Network drives cf Local drives.
Pondini does have a method to do it... but I would not recommend it.

Migrating Time Machine data to Synology NAS

I have a new Synology NAS and want to migrate my existing Time Machine data from a Western Digital external USB drive.
I have set up the Synology shared folder for Time Machine and it appears as an option in Time Machine settings. But I do not want to start over with Time Machine backups and want to reclaim the external drive used for Time Machine today.
Any advice?

I was actually get things up and working towards the end of January. Somebody replied with the link below to one of the forums I posted to. Since I was already using SuperDuper, I had what I needed.

I had not seen this article on my many searches.
I have things now working...finally. Though I'm not using Time Capsule, I'm using Synology, I followed the spirit of the post and was able to figure things out along the way. And it took a short 45 hours to move nearly 1TB of data to the NAS. I now have TM backing up to the NAS which has all of the backups which go back to May 2010.

Time Machine and Time Capsule don't seem to work well together?

I get the feeling there are some serious problems with the combination of Time Machine and Time Capsule.
This is extremely disappointing, as the idea of a centralized backup device on the network (instead of disks attached to each and every computer we have running Leopard) seemed like such a good idea and a good way to supplement our tape-based backup that takes place with Retrospect.
In reality, it's a disaster on both Intel and PowerPC systems. All systems and the Time Capsule are fully up to date with software updates from Apple. I have two 1TB Time Capsule units. It goes something like this:
1. I have a few systems (mainly Intel) that work perfectly with the Time Capsule. There are no complaints and no issues at all. These systems just quietly run their backups as they should. They are the definite minority--maybe one or two have worked properly.
2. I have some systems that complain from time to time (mainly PowerPC) but will back up with a little encouragement. These too are the minority.
3. And finally, I have systems that are nothing but pain. These are both Intel and PowerPC systems. They are also the majority of the systems I have. The most common problem is sudden loss of the credentials needed to access the Time Capsule hardware--a user will be going along about their business when the Mac OS asks for the Time Capsule user name and password--after it's already been supplied and backups have been running. This should simply never ever happen.
Another charming behavior I've seen is corruption of the sparse disk image file that each computer creates on the Time Capsule. Time Machine will complain that it can't perform the backup, and examining the disk image file with Disk Utility shows it to be severely damaged. Turning off Time Machine, deleting the corrupted sparse image file, and starting over fixes it. For a while.
Finally, there are the machines (again, both Intel and PowerPC) that just can't seem to actually get through the first backup run. They either go so far and can't continue, or never actually manage to get started. I've checked the disks in these computers and found no problem with the hardware or file system. The installations are fresh and fully up to date.
Meanwhile, I have computers running Leopard with directly attached disks configured for use with Time Machine. One is a QuickSilver that isn't even officially supported by Leopard, with a Firewire attached disk. It doesn't skip a beat. The other is an Intel Mac mini being used with Mac OS X Server 10.5.4 and a USB external hard drive. These machines just do their thing, and I never have to babysit them.
These problems with the Time Capsule have been so severe that I've just given up on most of the computers and shut off Time Machine entirely. We have tape backups that run over the week, so it's not a huge loss. But that's not what really made me throw up my hands and say "enough"...no, that was the speed. Even with just one computer backing up to it, the Time Capsule seemed terribly slow. Watching the progress indicator was just painful.
I put in a word about all of this to my independent Apple dealer, and they say I'm definitely not the first to complain about some or all of these problems. In fact, they told me they were going to set up a test lab in their shop to see if they could duplicate these findings. I have no doubt that they can.
There are a total of seven computers backing up to one Time Capsule. They all store maybe ~40GB worth of data including the OS. There are about six computers on the other. Because of the way the network is laid out, the Time Capsule is connected to a Gigabit switch (and that is the only thing it's connected to). It cannot be used as the router, although I know Apple suggests this. The Airport section is disabled--I have no need or desire to use it. Some computers link up at 100 megabits, others at 1 gigabit. There are no network problems--we have no problems moving large amounts of data across the same network to our tape backup machine.
Is anyone else seeing these kinds of problems? Am I doing something wrong or expecting too much from Time Capsule?

I may be on to something. The Time Capsules I have live in a telephone equipment room that is indoors but not directly air conditioned or heated. It doesn't ever get too hot to be comfortable in there--the highest I've ever seen the temperature was 80 degrees (F). Most of the time the temperature is between 60-78 degrees.
I happened to touch one of them the other day while it was in use, and I noticed that the casing was hot to the touch...not dangerously so I suppose, but much hotter than I would have expected.
So I turned a small fan on both Time Capsules and have left it running. And I've noticed that not only do backups seem to complete more quickly, the reliability is also better. I am going to try some of my most troublesome computers once again just to see what happens.
I know there is a fan pointed at the hard drive in the Time Capsule, but I can't see how it does much in the way of cooling things down. In my opinion, it's just surrounded by too many heat producing devices to do much good...after all, not only is there a 7200 RPM hard disk in there, but also a 500MHz Marvell processor and radio set.

Can't find this so far in APEX 4.x: presumably superseded by the Home > Administration > Monitor Activity > Page Views > By Interactive Report option?
Note however that the concensus among the wise is that accurate "logout" statistics with APEX (or any browser-based system) is impossible. How many users actually logout using using a method that triggers a capturable event at the actual time they stop using the system? How many are going to close the current browser tab? Or the entire browser window? Or press Cmd-Q? Or click a bookmark for a different location? Or type "p0rn" into the Search box? Or switch to another window and spend the rest of the morning reading Twitter? Or shutdown the machine? Or run out of battery power? Or lose their wifi connection? Or get timed-out during the fire drill? Or go home for the night after locking their PC with everything still running? Or...

Time Machine says Time Capsule Disk unavailable

     I have the exclamation point in the menubar icon and Time Machine says Time Capsule Disk unavailable even though I have backed up to it many times before. I tried unpluging/plugging in the TC, but this did not solve the problem. Any ideas?

      However, I did have a problem periodically with computers not recognizing the TC disk before I had unclicked the "Enable file sharing" box, so I might still end up using your advice if this happens in the future.
There is a bug or several of them.. losing the disk is one thing the new 7.6.4 firmware is supposed to fix.. my deeply held suspicion is that Apple are using all of us as beta testers.. as lots of people are having trouble. But who knows it may finally fix this bug.. we are awaiting confirmation. ie people saying it is now fixed.. rather than since loading 7.6.4 my TC is now dead.. or disappeared .. or broken.. or no longer has wireless output.
Lets say maybe they fixed a bug.. and added some more.
     The reason I had unchecked the "Enable file sharing" box is because I have Mountain Lion Server and wanted to use port mapping on the TC to point to my computer as a File Server. To do this I went into Airport Utility and in Network pane tried to add File Sharing to the Port Settings. However, this conflicted with the "Enable file sharing" box from the Disks pane. Do you know of a way to have time machine backups to TC but also run a File Server from a computer networked with the TC using port mapping? Thank you for any guidance.
You only need the ports forwarded to the server to get outside access.. ie remote wan access.. Did you have wan access to the TC checked.. that will cause a conflict with AFP .. since it cannot be forwarded to multiple destinations at once.
If you do not have WAN access checked then you should be able to check "enable file sharing" since that is local lan..
Try it and tell me what happens.. I have never tried the combo you are using.
I would try simply using a different method to access if that doesn't work.. eg BTMM should work fine to the Server without needing ports forwarded in the TC.. as long as the TC is the main router.. and this whole issue is only because the TC is the main router.
You can also do it with vpn.. which is more robust and more business/pro method to access a server remotely than AFP.

So the problem i solved, but i dosent understund why it works in this way. Does it indicate other problems which will make my researchprogram unrelaible ?

I checked your vi and it fails as you state.
It runs fine if: 1 Convert number to timestamp OR
2 Wire a constant to want seconds?
In labview 7.1, no problems.
I think is a job for NI engeniers.

Time machine and time capsule

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and installed Time Capsule. I connected a Maxtor external drive to Time Capsule to enable me to access my photography library wirelessly. I have a 2nd external drive that direct connects to my Mac Book Pro. I have found the following problems:
1. Time machine shows backup files for the external drive that connects to my mac, however they are old files no longer on the drive. It does not backup the current drive but does indicate backup was successful. I would also like time machine to backup the external drive connected to time capsule.
2. I tried to delete the folder containing the old files and received a message saying I did not have permission.
3. I am experiencing problems entering Time Machine. It takes a long time to connect (including when I am connected via an ethernet cable) and after a few minutes I receive a message asking if I still want to enter time machine. Once I do have access, I typically only see mail and am not able to access folders.
Help is appreciated! Thank you.

Are you sure it's not backing-up the new drive? Try the procedure in item #E3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip.* It's for a slightly-different situation, but should confirm which disks were backed-up on each backup.
If you're sure the new external is not being backed-up, and is not on the +Do not back up+ list, do a "full reset" of Time Machine per item #B3 of the Troubleshooting Tip.
I would also like time machine to backup the external drive connected to time capsule.
Sorry, it won't. TM will only back-up internal or directly-attached FireWire or USB drives.
