Time Machine disk
I have a Macbook Pro attached to a 1TB back up disc. From the start, time machine would only use 80 GB and then begin deleting the oldest.
How do I get it to recognize that there's alot more space on the hard drive?

Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.
Here is what I see:
(Window 1)The disk was not properly ejected. if possiblem always eject .....
(Window 2)The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
Suggested Backup Software
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
All systems are running 10.6.8.Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

Two computers backed up on the same Time machine disk, one computer is dead. How to access data?

I backed up two different computers on the same time machine disk. Now, one of my computer is dead. I can see the backups on my time machine disk. How can I get the backup data that belongs to dead computer. When I enter time machine, I only have access to corresponding backup. I do not want to destroy the backups. My timemachine backup structure looks like below:

Now, my Computer-1 is dead, and I am using Compter-2. If possible I wan to know a way of accessing Computer-1 data without destroying any other backups/files etc. Than you!I loathe sending people offsite for information except WRT time machine. Hi,
I'm currently having an weird issue with Windows 7 x64 on my Macbook Pro.
I'm getting a bluescreen of death each time my USB Time Machine disk is connected.
Any other HFS+ disk doesn't make Windows crash, it's only the Time Machine disk.
I've try with Bootcamp 3.2 and i'm getting the same issue.
The only think I can see is the upgrade of Lion who modify my Time Machine disk.
Cheers,The version you have downloaded is an upgrade one, and you need a PC with Windows to download and burn it to a DVD or USB drive. You can't do it with your Mac, as it's a EXE file. Also, you can't use it legally unless you have already Windows on the computer

Copy error -36 when copying from Time Machine disk to Mac
Since using OS X 10.6.(.6), I can't copy certain files from my Time Machine disk to the Mactintosh hard disk without getting a copy error -36. The error doesn't occur with all files: for example pdf files will copy without problems, but Filemaker Pro files and iCal files don't. May be it's important to mention that when I retrieve files from the Time Machine disk, I have to mount the "sparse bundle" with my user files first and then drag the files to the desktop or an other place. This is because I'm running File Vault. If I try to retrieve files that were backed up under OS X 10.5, I get no copying errors at all. So it looks as if Snow Leopard has something to do with it. Is there anybody who has seen this problem before and knows how to solve it?
Ok, I finally was able to complete the Disk Utility Repair, and it says everything is ok. Still the problem in restoring presists.
One thing I noticed is that most files that Time Machine restore chokes on have an added set of permissions added to the file or folder with the same user name as mine, and the permissions level says "Custom". Thus it has 2 sets of permissions defined with the same user name, one with Read/Write and another with the same name that says "Custom." Am I explaining this well? Maybe this is a clue? -
How to Move a Shared Time Machine disk to another Mac?
Hi,
I have a network with three macs. Initially, I had a Time Machine disk connected via USB to Mac A. Mac A and Mac B used that disk for TM backups.
Now I have coupled the Time Machine disk (via Firewire if that matters) to Mac C.
Mac B can't find the Time Machine disk anymore (as well as Mac A I guess), although the TM disk itself has still the same name. When I explicitly open the TM disk on Mac C in the Finder on Mac B, Mac B does not recognise it as its original TM disk.
After I clicked Change Disk in the Time Machine preferences on Mac B, I was able to reselect the TM disk. However, it doesn't see that there is already a long history present from Mac B and Time Machine plans to back up from scratch.
How can I tell Mac A and Mac B that the TM disk that is now connected to Mac C is still the same disk?

Time Machine Disk on One Machine Backing up a Second

I have an iMac with an external hard drive I use for time machine. I am going to get a MacBook Air and want to use the same hard drive for Time Machine. I know you can store 2 different computer time machine backups onto the same drive, however I do not have an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule. My question then is, is there any way to have the MacBook Air backup to the time machine disk plugged in locally to the iMac via the Network or would I need to get a Airport Extreme or Time Capsule? I'd prefer not having to disconnect/reconnect the time machine disk every time I want it to back up each machine (kinda defeats the point of it doing things automatically). Is this possible? See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. I'd strongly recommend that you partition the drive, as noted there.
The backups made over a network will be stored differently than the ones done locally; in a disk image sparse bundle. -
Time machine disk permissions changed to read only
Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive.This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.

Time Machine disk not recognised
My G5 PowerMac has been away for repair; it's needed a new logic board. It was away for nearly two weeks. Now Time Machine doesn't recognise the external drive which contains the Time Machine backups from last November. It wants to do a backup from scratch and says there isn't enough space on the disk.
Is there any way of getting the Time Machine to recognise the previous backups and start adding to them?
I'll be very grateful for any advice.To TM, it is a different computer. The logic board includes your Ethernet "Mac Address", which is a unique number that TM uses to be sure it knows which Mac is which.
There is a fairly elaborate way to attempt to persuade TM that the existing backups really are for your "new" Mac: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It is very easy for the inexperienced user of Terminal (and the not-so-inexperienced as well) to make an error with Terminal, get no error message, and have it not work, so try it at your own risk.
But there is an alternative: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar. The +Enter Time Machine+ option changes to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+ That's a bit misleading, but it will take you into the normal TM interface where you can see and restore from the old set of backups.
Even if you're successful with the Terminal work, your first backup with the new logic board may be a full one -- every file and folder on your system. If TM decides to do that, you cannot prevent it.
So if your TM disk/partition isn't at least 2.5 times the size of the data it's backing-up, your best bet may be to just erase it with Disk Utility and let TM start over. -
Time Machine Disk can be attached to LAN and still be used with TM?
I had many Time Machine's Backups with an external Western Digital USB Drive.
Now I had purchased a LaCie 2big Network. I use it for my Windows XP Network.
This Lacie has 2 Usb ports. It can be configured to use external disk also with time machine.
I would like to know if I can use my disk without lose my last TM backups.
I asked to Lacie support team if I could use my Western Digital without lose alla my previous backups.
They did tell me that they do not offer support for Time Machine problems.
I would like to try, but I quit fear to lose everything...
Did anyone tried to connect an "already time machined" disk to network and use time machine again directly from LAN?
Thank you...first, i should mention that TM backups to NAS devices are not officially supported. the only exception is a Time Capsule and it also works with drives attached via USB to an Airport Extreme Base station. some 3rd party NAS devices claim to support TM backups. your does claim it which means that it should work. however, if you move your current TM drive to be plugged into the Lacie NAS you'll have to start a new backup sequence. that's because directly attached backups are stored differently from remote ones. directly attached backups are stored directly in a folder on the drive and remote ones are stored in a sparse bundle.

Time Machine, Disk Utility, and clearing out corrupted snapshots
Hi, all. I've been having some troubling issues with Time Machine and could use your collective insight.
I have a 500GiB external USB2 disk that I've been using for Time Machine since December (the oldest snapshot in Backups.backupdb is named 2007-12-13-222250). Everything worked fine until sometime in late January, when Time Machine decided to ax 2/3 of my Applications directory. Time Machine's logging is terse, so I wasn't able to determine what caused the corruption. The fact that this error wasn't caught and flagged by Time Machine bothers me.
Especially because I discovered this in the process of needing to recover from a crash on my laptop's hard drive -- I had to roll back to a previous, complete snapshot to get all my applications back.
After that I had to engage in some jiggery-pokery to get Time Machine to re-snapshot everything, but things proceeded normally until I received my new copy of DiskWarrior 4.1 last night (although DiskWarrior is an innocent bystander here). I tried to use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory on the Time Machine disk, but it failed before trying to write anything.
(For those who care: after some back and forth with Alsoft tech support, we determined this was likely because my Time Machine volume has 6.2GB of catalog data, and DiskWarrior works by rebuilding the directory in memory, so it has to be able to fit the whole catalog into virtual memory.)
I was a little paranoid that something might be wrong with the disk after that, so I fired up Disk Utility and told it to repair the disk. It churned for about 6 hours and repaired an extraordinarily large number of hardlink reference count errors, but completed by claiming that the disk had been repaired.
When I next told Time Machine to run, instead of copying over a couple GB of data like it usually does, it started copying 38GB! ***? I took a look at the previous Time Machine snapshots, and discovered that Disk Utility had totally corrupted every snapshot I'd made since last month's fandango. Most of the root-level directories in the snapshots now look like this:

That is clearly, completely wrong, and it alarms me that Disk Utility could cause so much damage to a Time Machine volume.
Since I also use SuperDuper! to regularly clone this disk, it's not as big a nightmare as it could be, but this means that I'm going to have to clear out every snapshot for the last month by hand, both because I obviously can't trust them anymore, and because I keep getting messages like this in the logs:

I'd like to keep the old snapshots if I can. What's likely to happen if I just go and clear out the b0rked backup sessions by hand?
(Hmm... it appears yes, because I just deleted them all and the disk didn't recover the freed space.)
Here's the important question: has anyone else had issues using Disk Utility on a Time Machine volume, and does anyone at Apple have any plans to add integrity checking to Time Machine? As it stands, I don't really feel like I can trust it in its present form, as convenient as it is...I have trouble with disk utility on my new (1 TB Lacie) as well as on my old (500 GB WD) drive. After doing a backup, du tells me a never ending list of errors like
HasFolderCount flag needs to be set (id = 599567)
(it should be 0x10 instead of 0)
Everything was O.K. before doing the backup; so is the disk to be backupped, according to du.
Up to now, no other problem occurred, but I´d like to clear this issue before my trust in time machine is restored. -
Time Machine disk corrupt. help!
Ok, so I have had time machine up for about 2 or 3 months now, and it's gone pretty smoothly.
But a few days ago my power went out. I have a BACK-UPS, so it was no problem. But ever since my Time Machine disk has topped appearing on the desktop, and updates are not being made.
Disk Utility sees the disk, however gives me these errors when I try to EITHER verify or repair…

I have tried booting up from my OS X: Leopard disk and using its Disk Utility, but with the same result. I also can't back-up the disk to an image (on both OS X's and OS X Installer's Disk Utility).
If possible I would like to try and save my data that's on the drive…
I don't know too much about Terminal and what not, but I can try anything you guys want me to if you tell me how to.
Thanks in advance!Which version of Disk Utility are you using? You must use version 11 or later (supplied on the Leopard installer DVD & installed by it) to repair a drive with TM file structures. Otherwise you will get unpredictable results.
Do not use any version of Disk Utility supplied with Tiger on any volume used with Leopard. It will damage the new file structures Leopard enables. -
Time Machine Disk Crashes Windows
Hi everyone,
When booting into Windows, I have been getting a blue screen and crash. I noticed that this problem goes away when I remove the Time Machine disk from my machine. The disk is mounted internally in my Mac Pro, so it is a little inconvenent to have to remove it everytime I boot into windows. Any ideas?

Yup, that's the sort of thing that happens sometimes in this scenario.
You might be able to improve that by, of all odd things, changing some names. See #P1 in the same place.
Another possibility is the external HD going to sleep and not waking up quickly enough. Check with the maker for firmware updates or ways to adjust it's sleep (or "spin down") performance.
But if I click on "Manual Setup," it will time out. If I try to restart the router from the menu bar option, it will time out. The only way to fix it is to manually unplug the router and restart it that way. Is anyone else having a similar issue, or know how to prevent it?
That, I suspect, is a different problem (and mostly out of my area).

Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues
I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents? -
Time machine disk not ejecting
I'm having trouble ejecting my Time Machine disk from my mid-2012 retina MBP since installing Yosemite. If I control-click on the disk image and select EJECT, the image grays out a little but won't eject. If I try to start Disk Utility, it hangs and won't start. However, if I first start Disk Utility and then select the Time machine drive and select Unmount followed by Eject, the disk will eject.
Anybody else having this problem? I don't recall having this issue with earlier versions of OS X.Well, nobody replied but I'll post what solved the problem: installing an app called "Mountain." I also noticed that a recent Yosemite update including a fix for Time Machine problems but I don't know if it address this problem. In any event, since installing Mountain, I never have a problem ejecting discs.
