Time Machine does not backup after using second Mac on different volume.

Hi.
I use an airport extrem with an external usb hdd. It has 3 partitions. On the first one I made an TM-backup (MBP 2.2 Leo), all worked fine. Then I made a second TM-backup (MacBook) on the second partition. Worked fine too. But now TM on my MBP is not able to backup any more. When TM starts, it just "prepares" but never actually backs up.
What is the Problem and how do i fix it?

Time Machine will only back up HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) formatted drives. Reformatting will erase the drive so make sure everything on it is safely copied elsewhere and verify a few test files before erasing the drive. Getting rid of the FAT32 formatting has been problematic for quite a few people. The directions in this article are for good for getting rid of the FAT32 formatting. They are for formatting a Time Machine disk but the directions will work just as well for your purposes.

  • Time machine does not backup anymore

    Hello all,
I've been using my time machine for a month now, I kept it turned off and only connected the disk when I wanted to make a backup. Then I just hit Back Up Now from the menu and it always backed up everything (I used to check it afterwards). FYI, I've got a 500GB drive and for backups I use a 500GB partition on an external disk, where about 100GB is still free. All of a sudden, my time machine does not backup anymore. It does its run, whether a scheduled hourly one when turned on, or an on-demand one, but it only lasts a split second as though there is nothing to backup and when I enter the time machine, the files are really missing. I can't make it backup anything anymore. What is going on?
    thanks everyone

It's not related to this problem, but that may not be large enough. What's important is not the size of your internal HD, but how much is on it (or is expected to be on it in the next year or so). It varies widely, of course, depending on how you use your Mac, but Time Machine usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up.

That sounds like the year-old unfixed bug detailed in red in #D5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine does not backup all of my files

    Hi,
If I compare my Dropbox folder to what Time Machine backups there are differences which means that Time Machine does not backup all files:
    diff <(cd "/Users/phil/Dropbox" && ls -R | sort) <(cd "/Volumes/TimeMachineBackup/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Dropbox" && ls -R | sort)
There are also differences if I compare my user folder to the Time Machine Backup:
    diff <(cd "/Users/phil/" && ls -R | sort) <(cd "/Volumes/TimeMachineBackup/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/" && ls -R | sort)
I did not exclude the folders affected from the Time Machine backup.
I have verified this behaviour on other computers as well.
Does anybody else have this kind of problem?
    Philipp

These commands solved the problem for now:
    1) Stop the Dropbox desktop application (if needed)
    - Click on the Dropbox icon.
    - Choose Quit/Stop/Exit
    2) Open your Terminal app (Located at /Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
    3) Copy and paste the following lines into the Terminal, one at a time, and press RETURN after each one. PLEASE make sure you copy and paste these commands (don't type them by hand), as getting them wrong could cause some harm. You'll be prompted for your computer user's password (not your Dropbox password) after entering the first command. Keep in mind that the password field in the terminal will remain blank as you type your password. After you type it, just press ENTER.
    sudo chflags -R nouchg ~/Dropbox ~/.dropbox ~/.dropbox-master
    sudo chown "$USER" "$HOME"
    sudo chown -R "$USER" ~/Dropbox ~/.dropbox ~/.dropbox-master
    sudo chmod -RN ~/.dropbox ~/Dropbox ~/.dropbox-master
    chmod -R u+rw ~/Dropbox ~/.dropbox ~/.dropbox-master

These are the iCloud storage options: http://www.apple.com/icloud/includes/lightbox-storage.html

    1. restoring data over icloud takes time
    2. iCloud is not designed as a replacement to Time Machine.

  • Time Machine does not show after installing Lion?!

I upgraded to Lion and now my Time Machine does not work. When I connect the disk it starts and then shuts down. It does not show neither on desktop or on Time Machine. Any ideas. I hate the thought of reinstalling Snow Leopard but...
    Thank you in advance
    Matej

No reason to reinstall Snow Leopard.
What's shown on the Time Machine Preferences window for Latest Backup?  If it shows "Error" in red, see #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Time Machine does not backup all files

I recently did a clean install and to my horror i can see that Time Machine does NOT back up all my files.
It seems to be worst in my music library which fortunately is pretty easy to rebuild do to itunes index.
But is there any way to make sure that Time Machine does in fact back up all files?
Or is it just broken and should be avoided?
I have 1,5 year old Macbook Pro Retina 15 inches 500 GB SSD

If you use the third-party application "Dropbox," you may see files in the Finder that are not present locally, but are actually on a network server. Those files won't be backed up and won't appear in Time Machine, even though they show in a Finder window. If the files in question are in a Dropbox folder, disable the software or refer to its developer for support.
Continue only if you've ruled out Dropbox or any similar product as a possible cause of the issue.
Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.

  • Time Machine does not backup home/user directory (on separate drive)

I recently installed a SSD into my Mini. Due to size restrictions, my home/user directory has to be kept on another drive. I retained the stock 1TB drive that came with the Mini for this.
Ok, installed the SSD, restored a Time Machine backups (sans user data). Used a different admin user and configured my user to use the 1TB drive for it's home directory (/Volumes/1TB/home/<user>). Restart, log in as my user, all is good. All data, settings, etc is there. Everything looks normal.
Time Machine REFUSES to backup this directory. It will backup the 1TB drive and anyting else I create in it, but not the home directory. I tried every permission trick I could think of or found online. I even tested it further by formatting the 1TB drive fresh, adding a new user, configuring the user to use the 1TB for their home directory and it still won't back it up (this was a test of permissions the OS set, to make sure I didn't change my data perms somewhere along the way). Time Machine would not backup the new user's home directory on the 1TB drive.
Any thoughts? I can't be the first person to have their home directory on a non-OS drive.
If I were to create a folder/file in /Volumes/1TB/<test file> ... Time Machine gets it perfect. It just will NOT touch /Volumes/1TB/home/<anything here>
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine does not work after installing mavericks

After I installed maverick on my imac, my time machine backups don't work anymore!!!!
I have a normal portable HDD attached to my Imac with time capsule backup from before mavericks was installed.
I also has a Buffalo NAS as a second Time Machine Backup.
TIme capsule does not recognise my Buffalo NAS and tells me that it is not available.  It has previous backups from Mountain Lion for sure!
My portable HDD keeps saying "Preparing for backup" for eternity.
Please, APPLE, what is going on with mavericks?  Regretted upgrading.
My backup is 31 days behind because of this!  Unacceptable!
But what is strange is that I can connect to my portable HDD and Buffalo NAS as a drive.   What I have been doing is to copy and paste the important stuff into the drives.  But it really defeats the purpose of time machine, right?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Time machine will not backup after maverick

This is a major problem, not addressed in the installation instrucitons. The disk runs eternally "preparing backup", I mean all night.
This happened to two machines on entirely separate backup disks. And if we are sacraficing the old data in reformating the drive, I would like to know about that before choosing to upgrade.

    Update: Finally...
At least for the Promise Pegasus R4... but I noticed on other threads that WD drives are also acting up too so this might work with them too.
I turned off Time Machine, and deleted that pesky .plist file, again. I unplugged the R4, power and thunderbolt, then played whack the gopher with the drives swapping them around randomly.  I reintalled Mavericks from a fresh download, yet again, then set Time Machine to backup on a fast USB 3TB drive (which it did in 6 hours or so).  Then I turned off Time Machine, deleleted that .plist file again, rebooted the iMac, plugged in the R4, reformatted it again with Disk Utility, then hooked it to Time Machine, said a few slightly heretic prayers to whatever demons came with Maverick, and 2 minutes later Time Machine started to backup and report 1 hour to complete... the hour isn't up yet, but I'm crossing everything I have 2 of...
I've noticed a few other 'didn't copy over or mesh well' things with Maverick, but that's a different thread and 2 updates from now once we all suffer through this extended beta-test by Apple.
John Galt posted this on another thread... to find and delete that pesky .plist file:
or "error ... while creating the backup folder."
    and follow that to:

  • Time Machine will not backup after an error creating the backup folder.

I have TM that will not make backups anymore after getting an error trying to create the backup folder. It wasn't able to complete that backup so it will not create new ones.
I also have a huge file in the backup directory:"dateofbackupattempt.inprogress". It is 231 Gb as if it was trying to do a complete backup instead of an incremental one.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

The Time Machine symbol in the menu appears as a grey ghost, not the black symbol usually seen.
That sounds like Time Machine is turned OFF (on the Preferences panel).
I assume you clicked the TM icon in your menubar or Dock and selected Back Up Now?
It had not saved a thing and the partial file in the folder was dated back to Feb when it all stopped recording. I repaired the disc again. No issues noted.
That sounds like a backup didn't get started at all.
Tried to restart Time Machine. Same grey ghost.
Do you mean moving the big slider button on the TM Prefs panel to ON, or Back Up Now?
Decided to erase and start anew. Got the message cannot erase as disc cannot be unmounted.
    Where to next? Help!!!!
Assuming you were doing Back Up Now, let's see what your logs show.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Time Machine will not backup after Snow Leopard.

    Pertinent information:
    Macbook Pro pre-aluminum body
Time Machine backing up over network to a ppc mini with 500 gb external drive.
This worked fine with Leopard for over a year. I installed Snow Leopard last week and this is the first time I got a chance to try a Time Machine backup. Doesn't see to want to backup no matter what I do.
    I tried:
    - Renaming the sparsebundle
    - Disconnecting/reconnecting the external drive.
    - Re-selecting disk in Time Machine config and nothing works.
    - Even ran Verify Disk and Repair Disk on the external drive. Found a header error, but Disk Utility said it was minor and fixed it.
It seems that Time Machine isn't even trying to figure out what needs to be backed up. Here is the log. Below this snippet of the log I will post some of the other things I see...

  • Time Machine does not work after Lion Upgrade

    Hi all.
I upgraded my iMac to Lion yesterday. I used to run Time Machine through my airport extreme to an external hdd.
After the upgrade to Lion I'm unable to do this. When I try to setup Time Machine again, it is not possible to connect to the HDD throught the Airport Extreme. I do find the external HDD in Finder, but not able to access it.
The HDD is a Samsung 1 TB.
Is this a known issue and is it any possible fixes in the near future?
    Thanks!

First backup worked fine, and also the subsequent hourly automatic backups. But then the automatic backup stopped, and it does no longer show the next backup time. I can again manually backup but the automatic backup does not work any longer.
    Who has similar problems?

I am also having problems with TimeMachine failing to continue to backup.

  • Time Machine does not backup home folder

I upgraded to Lion recently and time machine was working properly, my hard disk failed and apple replaced it, but put in a HD with 10.6.8 on it.  I then restored from time capsule (1 TB- first gen) and eventually it worked and everything seemed to be working.  However it also changed the name of my home folder (reversing the name) and now my home folder is not backed up on to time capsule, local snapshots include it but not on the tc.  I have reset (using pondini guide) the preferences and also eventually deleted the previous time machine and completely set up a new one but still no luck.  Can anyone help as i am uncomfortable without a backup of my home folder.  Nothing is encrypted and file vault turned off.  Please help.
