Time machine error when backing up iMac with internal flash and sata internal drives.

will appear to be backing up and then as just about done, shows Time Machine Error message and ask you to
try again later, if problem persists, repair backup disk with disc utility.  Neither solution works.

Bump for a monday, and hopeful for some replies.

time machine backup to new iMac

Yes, however it's always wise to update your apps to ensure you have the most up-to-date version. Use Setup Assistant to migrate your data, apps and settings to the new iMac, simply follow the on-screen directions. If the new machine has already arrived and you have already run Setup Assistant, connect the TM backup to the new machine and run Migration Assistant (a cousin of Setup Assistant) and follow the on-screen directions. You can find Migration Assistant in Applications - Utilities - Migrations Assistant or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Command + Spacebar and type "Migration Assistant".

  • Time Machine Error when upgrading from old iMac to new iMac

Hi. I recently purchased the new 27" iMac and just completed migrating all data from an old PPC iMac. When I went to activate Time Machine and begin backing up on an existing 1TB Time Capsule, I received the following Time Machine error: "The backup disk image "xxxx" iMacG5 sparsebundle" is already in use."
Does this mean I need to go into Time Capsule first and delete the old iMac's sparsebundle before activating Time Machine on the new iMac? If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?
    Thanks!

No, you shouldn't have to do that, but you may want to if the TC's disk isn't well over twice the size of the data you're backing-up.
Most likely, all you have to do is eject the sparse bundle via the Finder.
A new feature in Snow Leopard will allow you to continue backing-up to the same sparse bundle. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?
Yes, but if there's nothing else on the Time Capsule, this will be much faster:
Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.

  • Time Machine Error when attempting  make a backup!!!

Hello! I have a TC of 2 terabytes, dual network. Sometimes when I want to make a backup copy get an error "Time Machine Error: Unable to access the disk network backup because there was a problem with your user name or password for network". This usually happens several times a day, especially when the back of repose or iMac is the first time after being turned off.
If I get into the time capsule hard disk (I connect) through the finder, and try to make the backup this works well.
    Starting standard backup

Authentication error - the correct user or password info may not exist in the System.keychain or the server may no longer allow access for this user.
    Backup failed with error: 29

I get a similar error. I recently added a login password for the computer the backup disk is connected to on the network. I always get authentication errors now. I added the login, I thought, to keychain but still fails.

  • Time Machine stalls when backing up server data

I have an Xserve set up as a Workgroup Server at one of my locations. I've decided to simplify the backup scheme at this location, so I'm doing away with my shell scripts and just turning on Time Machine and pointing it at a large external array. This way I can enable a few selected users on site to easily retrieve files from the backup. I've done this a few times, to much success.
This time, I'm experiencing a new problem which I've not been able to solve. The users in this workgroup have quite a bit of data, about 1TB, much more data than I've dealt with using this setup.
    *The Problem:*
Time Machine begins copying data during the initial backup and achieves a transfer rate of about 10MB per second, not spectacular, but fine. When the backup reaches about 80%-90% complete, it stalls or slows to a crawl. It gets to about "900GB of 1.0TB" and the transfer rate slows to about 1MB per minute. Time Machine does not deliver any errors. It continues to back-up, just very slowly. So slowly sometimes it appears to be stopped.
I am backing up to a sparsebundle disk image, just like Time Machine will do over the network.
    *I Have:*
    • reformatted the destination volume
    • disabled Spotlight indexing on the destination volume
    • disabled Spotlight indexing on the source volume
    • copied the data directly to the destination volume using Finder (with success and fast performance)
    • reset the Time Machine preferences
    • used the default disk image Time Machine creates
    • used a disk image with a 4TB size limit
    • used a disk image with no partition layout
    • used a disk image with a GUID (GPTSPUD) layout
    • used a disk image with a Apple Partition Map (SPUD) layout
    • used a disk image with increased band size (128MB)
    • connected to the backup array using FW800
    • connected to the backup array using USB 2.0
    • unlocked all files on the source volume
    • set all permissions on the source volume (chmod)
The system is an Intel Xserve, 10.5.7, 2.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB boot drive, 2 x 1TB data drives. I am only backing up the data being shared to the workgroup, not the server boot volume. The destination volume has plenty of available space.
Checking the logs (Console filtering for 'backupd') reveals several of these errors:
    +8/27/09 12:27:51 AM com.apple.backupd[45548] SystemFlippers: Consumed too much data for FREF ID 131 (pBase = 0x4f839c0, p = 0x4f83ac6, pEnd = 0x4f839c7)+
    +8/27/09 12:27:51 AM com.apple.backupd[45548] CoreEndianFlipData: error -4940 returned for rsrc type FREF (id 131, length 7, native = no)+
I don't have enough foo to make sense of those errors or even tell if they're related. I also don't know if 12:27 AM is when the backup began to slow down.
I anticipate some answers will be "Time Machine was built for end users not servers", "Time Machine wasn't intended for this purpose." Which I don't necessarily agree with in this case. For the purposes of discussion, this machine could be considered just a desktop with file sharing enabled, backing up the same amount of data.
I've tried to provide as much information as I can think of, and appreciate any feedback.
Message was edited by: Arty Admin - minor correction.

It's a bug and should be reported to Apple's feedback.
Even though TM is failing in the manner described, is it backing up up your data correctly ?

  • Issue with usb flash and removable hard drives in Lion. (also an install tip)

Having an issue with my usb flash and removable hard drives.  I plug them in and Lion does not display all my files/folders, I take it out and plug it into my snow leopard machine and all the files/folders are there, does anyone have this issue?
It does it on my macbook pro which was a snow leopard upgrade to Lion and it does it on my macbook which was a clean install of Lion via a bootable flash drive.
The computers both work great in all other aspects, so there were no errors on installation. It's plain and simple, some files/folders are not showing up that are present on the drives and viewable on all other non-lion OS's mac and PC.
Also a word on installs, I highly suggest doing a clean install (delete and reformat drive them install Lion vs a snow leopard ugrade) my machine that was a clean install (macbook) runs 50% faster and smoother than the upgraded one (macbook pro).

Yes, you can use your backup disk drives in the manner you describe, but Apple provides conflicting information on the subject.
    From Mac Basics: Time Machine
Time Machine can’t backup to an external drive that's connected to an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or a drive formatted for Microsoft Windows ...
From Time Machine doesn't back up to AirPort Extreme AirPort Disks
Time Machine in Mac OS X v10.5 or later can be used to back up to many kinds of Mac OS Extended-formatted drives, but you cannot choose an AirPort Extreme 802.11n's AirPort Disk as a Time Machine backup volume.
However, you can choose Time Capsule AirPort Disks or internal disks as a Time Machine backup volume.
They have yet to resolve this discrepancy.
All other available technical details regarding Time Machine's use seem to indicate that a USB HD connected to Time Capsule should meet Time Machine's requirements. For what it's worth I have been using an external HDD connected to the Time Capsule's USB port and it seems to function just fine.

  • Time Machine "error" in backing up files..

So I just got a new external drive, and I began backing up files for the first time on it when at around 10% completion I got an "Error, files can not be backed up..." message or something along those lines. I tried to resume the backup several times but it would keep quitting at that point, which leads me to believe that there is a corrupt file somewhere on my computer that can not be copied. Am I right in this guess, and if so how do I find what is preventing the backup and continue to back up my computer?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Tom

Then you need to fix it, or something along those lines.

Depending on what the message said, probably. Or something.
and if so how do I find what is preventing the backup and continue to back up my computer?
Start with #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.

  • Time machine error message backing up

Recently Time Machine gives me an alert:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
"The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
My dedicated TM disk is 1.5 TB, with about 1/3 of a TB remaining. I have read and write privileges to the disk. Have tried rebuilding the Spotlight index and repairing the disk (with no errors).
The only thing I can think of that is different is that I test the Lion seed from time to time on another volume and see the backup occurring. I hate to start over and lose several weeks of backups. Any ideas would be most welcomed.

That was just one example. Below is a list of Console errors and I don't think I want to delete all of them . I do have one other question. Under "Latest" i show Snow Leopard HD and Snow Leopard Upgrade Archived. The latter is 114.2 GB and I don't need it, but I get a message that backup items can't be modified. Tried to use Cocktail to delete locked or unavailable files, but no go. Here's the Console:

  • Time Machine slow when backing up internal RAID

I've had some issues for some time now with Time Machine taking forever to backup information from my internal RAID in my MacPro.  When I say forever, I don't think Time Machine is able to back up every hour, even if it's just doing the 44 mb backup.  That can sometimes take 3 hours. I just determined today that it was specifically having trouble with the RAID.  I copied a bunch of information to my OS drive, and WHAM, time machine was flying!  I primarily work off of my RAID as this machine is used for video editing.  The RAID is an 8tb RAID 0.  The time machine volume is a GTech GSpeed 9TB RAID 5 connected via eSATA.

Bump for a monday, and hopeful for some replies.

My time machine quit backing up 2 weeks ago. How can I fix it?

Did you try the simple stuff?? Reboot the TC.. next.. reboot the whole network restarting in correct order?? ie modem.. TC.. client computers.. with 2min gap.
No luck we need to know more..
What modem.. is it a router?
What TC.. what firmware.. how is it connected?
    What OS on the computer?

    HELP!!!

If you are talking about moving your application support files and preference files that are in the home/library folders that won't be a problem. I did it recently for the same reason. I would not move system library files but user library files will move without problems. I did not move the whole folder but I moved the files in the folder that I needed. I moved Mail,Safari, all the files for iPhoto and iTunes, my music libraries, and some others. The only issue I had with it was that for some reason I lost my playlists on iTunes, not the music library, just the playlists. I only had about 12 of them so it was no big deal but if you have a lot, that may be an issue. I don't know what I didn't move that caused that to happen.
If you are going to do backups in the future, using Time Machine is great. I use it. However I go one step further an use a program called Super Duper and actually clone my entire drive onto an external drive, then do incremental backups with it. That way, I have a complete clone of my drive and if something happens, I can get back to work quickly. I don't know if Carbon Copy Cloner, which is a very good program also, supports incremental backups or not but if it does than either one will work.

  • Time Machine error while backing-up

Can anybody tell me what's wrong. I checked the drives with disk utility and they both are fine. I even erased the TM drive but somewhere around 1 to 2 gigs of back-up it stops and gives me the error. Here is the widget report:

If it's your initial backup, the most common cause is the TM drive not being formatted correctly (even, on occasion, if TM formatted it!). Use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to verify:
Select the top line, with the make and size. Towards the bottom, the *Partition Map Scheme* should be GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
Select the line for the TM partition (with the name). Towards the bottom, the Format should be +Max OS Exended (Journaled).+
If either is wrong, you need to stop TM and reformat the drive. See instructions in item 5 of the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum.
    *Other common causes/fixes:*
    1. Exclude your TM disk/partition from any anti-virus scanning.
    2. Exclude it, at least temporarily, from Spotlight (System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy).
*If backing up to a Time Capsule:*
    1. Try moving the TC and Mac closer together.
    2. Look for interference with another wireless device. Turn anything else off, or move it farther away.
    3. Try repairing the Sparse Bundle on the TC with Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Mount the TC, then drag it into the Disk Utility sidebar, then use Repair Disk (not permissions).
*If backing up to an External hard drive:*
    1. Be sure it's formatted correctly (see above).
    2. Also temporarily, de-select +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep ...+ in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
    3. Be sure it's connected directly to your Mac (no hubs, and not the USB port on keyboard).
    4. Try different port(s), cable(s).
    5. See if your drive has an automatic sleep or "spin down" feature you can disable.
If the problem persists after all this, post back with the Make, model, size and type (FireWire/USB) of your drive.

  • How does time machine work when being used with a mac pro?

How does time machine work when backing up a mac pro?
Considering the fact that the mac pro can hold 8TB and a external (non NAS) hard drive can hold only 2TB does time machine only backup the OS disk.

Time Machine will backup everything by default, on every disk in your Mac.
Choose System Preferences > Options to exclude items. You could exclude everything except your OS...but I'd think it is your data that's more important to you, if you have to make choices.
    See...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018
While it's true you can store almost 8TB, how much do you think you'll actually store? If you have 1TB of data you want to store then a 2TB drive can do it. Also when your TM drive begins to get full it will begin deleting the oldest backups to make room.
You could also get a Drobo with 8 bays...

  • Time Machine Errors FIXED!!

    Time Machine Errors FIXED!!
My TM is now WORKING WELL for about 4 days without a single problem!!
I had many of the Time Machine errors that others are dealing with. Here are some that I had:
Error writing to backup log. NSFileHandleOperationException:* -[NSConcreteFileHandle writeData:]: Result too large
    Error: (-1401) copying ...
    Error: (-43) copying ...
    Error: (-50) copying ...

Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeFSEventStoreUUID path:...

    Failed to make snapshot.
Error: (5) getxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.SnapshotState path:...
    Backup failed with error: 2
Volume at path /Volumes/BackUp does not appear to be the correct backup volume for this computer.
    Backup failed with error: 18
Error writing to backup log. NSFileHandleOperationException:* -[NSConcreteFileHandle writeData:]: Input/output error
    And other errors...
I tried the following things, but these did not help:
    1. Reinstalled Leopard.
    2. Reinstalled 10.5.1.
    3. Reformatted my external USB drive (several times, GUID partition table).
    4. Excluded large files from TM.
    5. Turned off Spotlight.
    6. Repaired permissions.
I found a posting somewhere (sorry, I can't find the original) that indicated there may be a problem with DiskUtility in Leopard. The post suggested that you re-partition your drive to have MORE THAN ONE PARTITION. Once that is done, you can re-partition your drive to have only one partition and that will fix the TM errors. So I used DiskUtility in Leopard to re-partition my drive to 16 partitions (16 is the max, 2 will probably work fine) with GUID (I have an Intel iMac). Once that was done, I immediately re-partitioned my drive to have only 1 partition (GUID). I started TM and it has run without a hitch since. So the problem may be with DiskUtility and NOT TM!

If running Disk Utility while started up from the Mac OS X installation disc does not show the internal drive in the sidebar, it is possible that it has become faulty. However, try doing the following, if you have not done so already.
    Reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not improve the situation, reset SMU.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Note: That is the procedure for an iMac G5, since you are posting in the iMac G5 category. However, you profile says 10.6.2, which is not possible for an iMac G5 (PowerPC), so if you have an Intel iMac, this is the procedure
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
This is basically disconnecting all cables and power from the iMac, then reconnecting following a precise procedure. When you reconnect it to power, if you had it connected to an over-crowded or old power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, at least initially. You want to make sure the iMac has a reliable power connection. Initially start it up with nothing connected, except for the power cord. If it does start up normally, connect only your standard keyboard/mouse and use it that way for a while. If it is still working normally, connect one peripheral device at a time; you may want to try restarting as a test since that was your problem. If the problem recurs at some point, note what device was connected last. It may be faulty in some way that is interfering with the iMac.
If it still does not start up properly, even with nothing connected, please post back.
