Time machine icon in menu bar doesn't spin anymore in Mavericks

On three separate machines, new iMac, MacBook Pro, and Air, menu bar Time Machine icon no longer spins when backing up.

Maybe it has to do with Maverick's memory/power usage techniques. By not having the Time Machine icon spin it save one processing and power. That's my uneducated guess.
I will say that I am not a fan of it either as it looks like the menu is stuck or has crashed rather than actually doing something. That is why I came here. It comes across as something being wrong.
It is not a very good icon or representation of what is going on. They could have at least moved the clock hands to another position or something. The small additional arrow is just not enough.
Cheers, Andrew.

  • Time machine icon in Menu bar no longer rotates during backups

Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, the Time Machine icon in my menu bar does not turn while it's doing a backup.  I have to click on it to see whether it's doing a backup.  This started with Mavericks, and was not fixed in 10.9.1.   Will it be addressed in 10.9.2?

That's just the way it is now.

  • Time Machine icon in menu bar

I believe there is a slight bug in the new OS X 10.9.
There is a icon in the menu bar for Time Machine and it is animated as a visual clue when a backup is in progress. It was working when I backed up my system prior to upgrading the OS, but when I backed up my system after the upgrade to OS X Mavericks it is no longer is animated during the backup. I am able to verify when Time Machine is actively backing up by opening Finder, but it was so much easier to glance at the menu bar. This a slight inconvenience rather operational error.

    NOT a bug. New interface.

    Send a "gripe" to Apple.
If enough people do, maybe (maybe) they'll change it.

  • Time Machine icon in Menu Bar is partially missing

I was deleting some preference files the other day and I seem to have deleted something that I shouldn't have.  It has cause a small graphical error in the user interface.
When Time Machine is not backing up, the icon in the menu bar looks like this:
There is no circle around the clock hands.
If I click on it or TM starts backin up, it disappears entirely:
Anyone know how to fix this, other than a full system reinstall?
If I have deleted those actual files, then if I know where they are then I should be able to use TM to fix its own icon by going back to retrieve them.
I have restarted the Dock and Fidner, rebooted and no dice.  This is system wide because it is a problem on my other user account as well.
    Thanks in advance

Fixed problem by upgrading to Lion...

Is the TM icon in your menu bar? If not, select the option in TM preferences to put it there.
Or, drag the TM app into your dock, then hold the mouse down on it for a second, and you should see a contextual menu with, among other things, +Enter Time Machine.+

  • Time machine icon.

The Time mMachine icon in the menubar doesn't spin. It shows, however, the inner clock and kind of a double head arrow.

That's how it is now with Mavericks, no spinning and just a small extra arrow on the icon.
There's only 1 arrow when it isn't running.

  • The time machine Icon does not does not show up in my menu bar

The time machine icon does not appear in my menu bar. The desk top icon for the external hard drive is green. I've checked preferances and the time machine is turned on and the box is checked that has the icon appear in my menu. I've turned off the time machine and rebooted and then turned it on and rebooted again. Nothing seems to work. I'm running Mavericks and I have an Intel I5 processor.

the box is checked that has the icon appear in my menu
Uncheck it and check it again. Any change? If not, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Menu Bar Time Machine icon displays a Question mark - Problem and Fix

My MacBook over the weekend upon awakening from sleep showed that the Menu Bar Time Machine icon displays a Question mark. The external drive showed as mounted in the finder but repeated tries to Back up Now ended in Latest Backup Failed. Hmmm. Never saw that before. Did a restart and ran Disk Utility Verify Disk on the start up disk and it came out OK. So I then ran Disk Utility on the external FW backup drive and as soon as it reported that the FW disk was fine, Time Machine started up on it's own and did a back up and all is back to normal after leaving the TM drive attached the remainder of the weekend. All backups are back to working fine with no repeat of the problem.

If for some reason the computer has trouble communicating with the drive it will report a failure when TM tries to back up, and will display that question mark. It's good you were able to fix it and get TM running again.

  • Blank icon in menu bar

Okay, so I'm pretty much new to the Mac and OS X so please excuse my question and low level of knowledge. My problem is that, as the title says, have a blank Menu Bar icon. When I click on it, it just says "Close" but it doesn't close... I attach a screenshot:
You can't see the pointer, but its between the Dropbox and Time Machine icons. So, what does the icon represent? How do I remove it? Please help

    See my previous post ..
No matter what the icon is, it can be replaced if necessary.
Hold down the Command key then drag the icon off the menu bar.

  • Missing time machine icon

My time Machine icon in the tool bar had a 'Question mark in it' what does that mean?
I reformatted the drive and deleted the icon, now I cant find the icon anywhere in applications how do i restore the icon?
Time Machine is still there in the top menu bar but not in my lower toolbar

the Time Machine application should be in the Applications folder. The ? in the dock icon means the application is not there. If you have a Time Machine backup that included the system, you should be able to fine the application there, using Finder

  • In Yosemite time machine icon does not indicate when saving.

I am using an iMac (20 Inch), early 2008, 5 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Recently I updated from Snow Leopard to Yosemite OS X 10.10.2.
In Time Machine I can back up to an external drive however the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar does not spin to indicate that it is backing-up as it did with Snow Leopard. What can I do to restore it to its previous behaviour?

    Joh,
Since the release of Mavericks, Apple removed the rotation animation.
There is no user capability to change that behavior.

  • No icons on menu bar

I previously had spotlight, time, language, ect. icons on the menu bar but now there is only the gmail icon. I tried clicking on the options of adding icons on menu bars, but it doesn't work. For example, i click "show time and date" and when i switch panes, it resets itself. Spotlight and others doesn't work either. So if anybody can help, I really appreciate it.

    Hi, Dale —
Seems as if there've been a lot of folks lately who've encountered problems with SystemUIServer — the process that manages the right-hand side of the menu bar.
Troubleshooting this may require several rounds of interacting. For now, try these:
    (1) Delete the preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist, restart, and reset as required in System Preferences
    (2) Disable all "system enhancers" — including especially any 3rd-party Menu Extras — that you may have installed. Some of these may show up in System Preferences »» Other. In particular, disable or uninstall Application Enhancer (APE) if it's there.
Please post back to share your progress, and we'll take it from there
    HTH!
    Regards,
    Dean

Is it in the Applications folder?
If so you can open it from there.
If it is you can get back on the Dock by dragging it there from the Applications folder again.
