Time Machine in Lion

Does anyone know if Apple is working to fix Time Machine working with NAS drives?
My Time Machine used to work seamlessly well with a WD NAS and now it stopped working altogether. Does anyone know if this is a temporary situation or will apple stop Time Machine from working with third party NAS drives?
Thanks
M

I had the same question ..... take a look at the discussion linked below... for a comprehensive explanation on the same.

I can not fine external hard drive for time machine sence lion was installed, it don't reconise it at all.

I have a Mac Mini (late 2009) and I have an iomega 1TB external hard drive connected to my mini via firewire and usb (usb allows me to use the usb ports on the external 1TB drive to daisy chain other devices).  Since I installed Lion, my Time Machine  and this 1TB drive (and its partitions) is finicky.  Sometimes it is mounted and sometimes it is not.   This issue has only surfaced post Snow Leopard and in the Lion era. I am not the first to say this but the whole reason I went Mac was b/c of Vista.  I am beginning to think that Lion is the new Vista.  Sorry for the latter, just venting... b/c this ain't the first issue with Lion.

  • Can I back up computer with time machine on lion then reinstall snow leopard and restore from backup safely

Can I back up computer with time machine on lion then reinstall snow leopard and restore from backup safely?

If your machine came with Snow Leopard or earlier and you have your install disks, yes, you can reinstall SL. However, you will need to erase the entire hard drive so you will lose all your files. Also note that there are some apps (such as Mail) which can't be downgraded "automatically" such as with a restore from Time Machine. Here is some info on TM:

  • Is time machine in Lion not compatible with Netgear Stora AFP

When I try to select my neargrear stora disk for time machnie back-up I get an AFP error.  Is time machine in Lion no longer compatible with netgrear stora?

Apple did make some security changes, and many 3rd-party NASs weren't ready.
I don't know about that particular one, or the exact message you got, but check out #C16 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Restore iPhone from Time Machine in Lion

I did a clean install of Lion with only restoring my user settings from Time Machine (Snow Leopard). Now I want to sync my iPhone, but it deletes everything.
So I want to sync it with a backup from Time Machine. I found the files in user/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
But this location doesn't exist at all in Lion! Even worse, user/Library doesn't exist!
So does anybody know how I can restore my iPhone from Time Machine in Lion? Many thanks in advance!

I just restored my desktop calendar by unhiding the library. Then opened another window and put Time Machine in the dock. That way when I started Time Machine the hidden folder stayed open. Then it was just a matter of going back far enough before iCloud deleted stuff. But lots of things were duplicated because they are on both calendars.

  • If i use time machine on lion 10.7, can i put all my info back on mavericks from the time machine i did on lion ?

Hi everyone, its my first time using time machine, i want to change from lion to mavericks, but i want to know how that actually works, and if i back up my stuff from lion would it match and would mavericks know what am trying to do here !?.... like i want to have all the sime that i do on my lion OSX but On Mavericks OSX

If you are going to install Mavericks on your existing Mac then you don't need to use Time Machine.  It's good to have a Time Machine backup but when you install Mavericks all of your personal files/documents are left intact and are unaffected.  Only the operating system files and updated applications are modified on your system.
You may want to consider keeping your Lion backup and setting up the Mavericks backup on a new external hard drive.

  • How to import email in Mail from Time Machine to Lion

My laptop, which had Leopard OS, was stolen. Fortunately, I have a Time Machine backup. I used that to install on my new laptop which has Lion (10.7.4). In Mail, my folders show up, but not the email in them. How do I get the email from Time Machine? (Current email is working. That is, email since I got the new laptop.)

Don't try to restore the file; restore the Note. Go in Mail to the mailbox where the note belongs. Enter Time Machine from there and step back until you find the Note.

  • Can't restore folders from Time Machine after Lion

    Hello guys,
after upgrading to Lion 10.7.1 I can't seem able to restore some old folders from Time Machine
Here's what happens: I log in TM, I can scroll through my old backups, I can choose the folders I want to restore, I can click on the folder, but when the systems tries to restore it, it stops saying that I don't have the privileges to access file A in the folder (and then all the procedure is stopped).
Oddly (at least for me) if I try to restore just that same file A (and not the whole folder) that I should have no privileges for, from the same old backup, I can do it, but I have to give the system my password: It pops up a window saying something "Finder is willing to make some modification, can you authorize?"  (forgive i'm translating the alert from another language) and then I can restore it.
Has anybody else this problem and how can be solved?
    Many thanks
Ps: I did a simple upgrade on Lion, no partition, no blank disk, and never changed anything in my user preferences, it's always the same, administrator
Pps: Before Lion I could restore easily exactly the same folders and files I tried to restore with Lion

But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

  • Help with iTunes database and Time Machine after Lion clean install

I did a clean install of OS X Lion and think I've given myself problems with my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup and with my iTunes Library database files.
My iMac (2007) had become very sluggish so I opted for a clean install.  Before the install of Lion my Snow Leopard 10.6.8 internal 1TB HD was at about  600GBs.  I was using Time Machine to backup to an external 1TB drive.  I had my iTunes 10.?  library on the same drive.
For the Lion install I partitioned my internal 1TB HD into two partitions - a 250GB Lion boot partition and the rest for Lion data files.
Now I  have two problems - 1.  I can't  work out how to re-connect my Time Machine backups, since they were related to a much bigger original drive, and 2.  I can't seem to find my iTunes database files.
I also don't want to restore any application files at this stage, as I'm determined to do a fresh install of only the applications I need as I go along, and hopefully  avoid the issues of sluggishness I had with Snow Leopard.
I have all my iTunes files in their pre-Lion external HD folder, but that folder does not seem to  have the iTunes Library.XML or iTunes Library files.  I didn't delete them so I'm hoping they were in my iTunes folder on my SL boot drive.  But that drive was deleted during the install, so I'll be depending on Time Machine to restore the database.
Can anyone suggest a way to deal with Time Machine for my Lion install, and a way to restore my iTunes database?  I'd like to keep as much of the Snow Leopard Time Machine data as I can, while continuing to do Time Machine backups from my Lion installation.
Anyone know where iTunes stores those database files, if not in the external drive iTunes folder? Spotlight search doesn't find the files, but is there a way to search my old Time Machine backups without having the Time Machine backups folder re-connected in Lion?
    Thanks.

My iTunes folder is organised like this if it helps:
And iTunes uses them from the Prefrences like this:

  • Can I restore a time machine osx lion backup using snow leopard install DVD?

    Hi.
I've been using osx lion but my hard drive died. Fortunately I have been making time machine backups.  Since I downloaded lion from the app store I only have the snow leopard install disks.
I know there is an option to restore from a time machine backup using the snow leopard disk, but since the time machine backup is of a later operating system (lion) will that  time machine restore work?
If it won't, can you recommend how to restore from my time machine backup?
    Thanks.

Once the replacement hard drive is installed, boot from your original Snow Leopard Installation Disk.  From there format the harddrive and install Snow Leopard and then download and install its Updates. Next, navigate to the Mac App Store and login using the Exact same Apple User ID that you did the first time you downloaded Lion.  You will now be able to download and install the Lion OS for Free. Download and install the Lion Updates.  Lastly, using Migration Assistant, migrate your Apps and Data from the Time Machine external hard drive to your internal Lion harddrive.  This method should give you a very stable version of Lion on your internal harddrive complete with all your previous settings, Apps and Data.
    Hope this helps

  • Are Time Machine, Mountain Lion and Retina able to work together?

I have been using for a while Time Machines with various Mac's and OS X systems with no problem.
But Time Machine (backing up on a 2TB Time Capsule) + Mountain Lion (10.8.2) + a Retina Mac Book Pro have been not able to appropriately work together for the last 2 months:
    - TM displays 'none' for 'Oldest Backup'
    - the corresponding-sparse bundle reaches 578 GB
    - whereas the present tinner  storage of the Mac is only 200 GB
    - TM seems to restart in a given way the full backup every time (2 millions itesm..)
    - but it does not take too much time
    - and 'entering' in TM displays daily bakcups for the last week, but not beyond (compared to 2 months), and several (hourly-like) backups for the last day
Unfortunately, the recipes given by http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html seem to be inefficient.
Thank you for sharing your experience(s) with this kind of problem and solution(s) is you have !

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • Network drives and time machine with Lion

Since upgrading to Lion my MyBookWorld network drive is no longer working with time machine.  The drive is recognised as being there by finder and time machine but when I try and connect to it as registered user there is a warning saying  There was a problem connecting to the server "MyBookWorld.Local". This drive was working fine until I upgraded to lion.  There is no new firmware from Wesern Digital for the disc.  It looks like that will be the solution.  does anyone have any idea when that may be forthcoming?

  • Time Machine Causes Lion to Completely Crash

To set the scene I have been working with Macs from System 7 onwards, I recently upgraded my i5 Macbook pro 13" to Lion.
I decided the other day to start using Time Machine. I have set it up before for other people and usually found it to be very straightforward. I previously just used to back up my data raw by doing flat file copies or DMGs when I felt like it.
I have a 500GB Toshiba USB 3 drive. Using Disk Utility I have erased the Dos partition and created a new GUID single partition, OSX Journaled.
Time machine sees the disk perfectly well and I allocate it to do the backups. They start as they are supposed to and begin to run.when they get to a certain point (which seems to be different each time) the machine locks up completely. The screen is frozen and the only way to continue is to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power key.
Since beginning to write this post I have also remembered I have had this before since upgrading when i was tryign to restore my iPhone.
Apart from that the computer is fine, no lockups or crashes. I used to get amazing uptimes from this one, 30 days etc so its quite dissapointing to be faced with this unreliability.
I have seen a few other posts suggesting a complete re-installaiton of OSX but this seems rather heavy handed for an application error. The rest of the OS is fine as far as I can tell (Except for these gestures driving me potty).
Any help with this woudl be great as it woudl be good to get more under the bonnet with Lion and see what makes it tick...or stop ticking as the case may be.
Look forward to hearing from you
    Kind regards
    Gareth

OK Here goes, I can make it crash on demand by starting Time Machine with the disk connected. Just to be belt and braces I initialised the disk again and created a new partition. It crashed and so here is the data you requested. I hope there is no personal info in here but the name of the computer is not too personal

    Step 3 System Diag reports
Nothing present, I dont think the system has time to write a report because it has become completely bogged by this problem.
If you can shed any light on this I'd be really grateful. The thing I spotted right before the crash is the following line
(Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:1 for volume
Look forward to hearing from you

  • Does Time Machine contain Lion?

I have a really slow, capped Internet connection, and I want to reinstall Lion. I didn't think about creating a restore disk the first time, but I was wondering if Time Machine backups are bootable/contain a copy of Lion. Any thoughts?

Not bootable, and only contain a copy of Lion insomuch as it backs up your entire ystem (unless you've told it to exclude things).
    Loads more info here:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html
    Regards,
    Colin R.
PS You can buy USB sticks from Apple I believe?
OS X Lion is also available as a digital download from the Mac App Store for a lower price. For users who do not have Broadband Internet access at home, school or work, the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive is an alternate way to update to OS X Lion.

  • Spotlight search doesn't work on Time Machine after Lion

I've got a new (couple of months old) iMac that came with Snow Leopard.  Since updating to Lion however, I've been unable to search for any files on my Time Machine drive (external USB connected HDD).
I've tried forcing Spotlight to re-index my external drive by adding the external drive to the Spotlight Privacy and then removing again but I'm not convinced It's doing anything.  I've also tried repairing the time machine disk in Disk Utility (which completed with no problems)
The strange thing about this problem is that if I set Finder to show all hidden files (via the "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE" command), after I reboot and go into Time Machine, it starts picking up files that I'm searching for.  But when I disable the hidden files again, Spotlight goes back to returning 0 results.
This is really frustrating as everything was working before I updated to Lion.  I've tried searching for other clues to clearing my Spotlight cache on the external drive but nothing has worked.  Some methods (such as this:- http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A5.html) refer to repairing a sparse bundle on my external drive but I can't find the file it's talking about.  Am I missing something obvious here?
Any help would be most appreciated.

Anyone can help on that topic ?
I'm looking for a solution for that too ...
