Time machine is asking for a password. What password is it asking for, and where is it?
I'm trying to restore a machine that has ben seriously compromised... I have a disk image, I have backups, I have Time Machine.
Time Machine is asking for a password to restore - there is no password in keychain, no administrator password works, I have no idea what the password to the share is. I have other machines accessing the share just fine. My written records say I put it as a stupid password: guest. But that doesn't work. How do I recover this password?
I've tried to recover from the disk image, but Disk Utility says it doesn't have disk space to do so. I've tried via rsync, and while I seem to have built a computer, it says it cannot find the OS when I attempt to boot.
I'm pretty lost. Why is Time Machine asking for a password? Where can I find this password? Why is it not in Keychain?

Apparently the mybooklive isn't so good about keeping passwords.

Bizarre solution that I can write to it, retreive it from a working system, but I can't restore from it! Augh.

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Time Machine Full HDD Restore not recognizing Login Password
Hi, my old G5 had Leopard running on it, the Logic Board failed so I got another, I decided to upgrade the HDD, Installed Leopard, connected my Lacie Firewire 800 External Drive to install the previous files/settings from Time Machine, All went fine until the Login password shook around saying it was incorrect. Its without a doubt the right password, no question about it. Tried another keyboard incase it was faulty, it wasn't. Had to put old HDD back in, works fine but I'm concerned, if this HDD fails, are my hourly backups rendered useless as I cant access them on a new install??

Yes, it should, unless you'd excluded important things from TM, and as long as your backups aren't corrupted.
Also, since I started backing up using TM on my new machine, my external drive now has 2 sets of back ups, one from the old machine and one from my current one.
TM started a whole new "sequence" of backups, since it thinks you got a new Mac. It uses the +Ethernet Address+ of your Mac, not it's name or serial number, to distinguish one from another. Unfortunately, that address is embedded in the hardware of the logic board. (Small consolation: in Snow Leopard, you get a prompt allowing TM to continue using the old set of backups.)
Should I just delete the old one to create more space as Im rapidly running out, or will it mess things up?
If you're going to try a full restore, obviously not until it's complete and everything checks out. So, as mentioned in #14, immediately turn TM off until you're sure. Then erase the TM disk with Disk Utility.
If you're not going to do the full restore, then you have two unattractive choices:
Manually delete backups from the old set, but *+not via the Finder+*. Use the +*Browse . . .+* option (see #17 of the FAQ Tip), then delete them one at a time via #12 there.
Erase the drive with Disk Utility and let TM start fresh. -
IMac freezes while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do?
Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do?
I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.
I am really fed up with this.When I first updated to Lion everything was a mess with freezes happenng constantly like every two or three minutes. Then when looking at the app store I noticed in purchased items that Lion was showing install instead of installed so I downloaded and installed again.
After this install every time Time Machine updated a backup my iMac froze for about 5 or 10 minutes while the backing up was in progress. I was getting really fed up and started this thread. Then one morning I got up and the iMac would not start up. It just sat there with the progress thingy spinning. I started in T mode to look at it from my MacBookPro and two copies of the HD appeared. Both showing zero files. I ran Disk utility on the MacBookPro to try to fix the disk. It showed 8 copies of the disk and all not reparable.
I then created a startup USB drive using my MacBookPro, used it to start up the iMac and restored everything from the previous day's backup. Since then it has been running smoothly with no freezes so maybe the answer is simply to restore a recent backup.
I am using Imation external drives and I don't believe the problem is drive specific. -
I want to know about time machine if i can use the hard drive that i use for time machine back up as a normal hard drive too or if it's only for time machine
and if it yes i want to know if i have 1TB hard disk to use the 500gb for time machine and the other 500gb for normal usethank you very much because i am considering to buy the porsche design hard disk 1TB and i want to have it for normal use and for time machine is a pitty to give 1TB for back up only again thanks and i know seperate the back and the working jobs are better but the i have to have 2 hardisks and i want only 1

I am using iphone 4 and just updated the software on my mac but wanted to restore my calender/contacts/messages after backup. itunes is requesting for a password to restore backup but it is not accepting any of my iphone passwords. what password does it require? If i cannot remember this then how do i continue backup without the password request?
If you have a corporate Exchange account set up on the phone, the administrators can require encrypted backups. Try using your Exchange password.

Still wouldn't back up so ereased the back up drive. Now nothing appears on it. On the internal drive of my imac in Appllications Timemachine is still there. When I click on it it goes to a screen that looks like a night sky and nothing more happens. Do I need to download some software?
Time Machine doesn't work on 10.4.7. It didn't become available until 10.5. Use a different backup software if you are going to use 10.4.7*:

My hard drive was replaced. I am using time machine to restore. It is about 40 minutes into the procedure and the computer is still "looking for other sources" is this normal?
First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

I have chosen to fil migrate from old ibook to new MacBook Pro using Time Machine after establishing admin account. I now have two admin. accounts and wish to delete the later one and transfer files manually. I am worried I will loose both accounts. ??
Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant. If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

Time machine has reverted my OS back to OS X 10.5.4 and i can't update....
when i put a new hard drive in my macbook i had to reinstall OS X. It seems the software updates didn't get backed up with time machine meaning that I have outdated software for safari and especially itunes. I used time machine to transfer all my files, itunes library, i can't open itunes because it says my version of itunes from time machine is a newer version than what i have on my macbook. When i try and do a software update it just freezes on calibrating install.... All i can think is that there is some middle software missing somewhere and the jump from 10.5.4 is too great to whatever OS it should now be on...
Can anyone help?

This weekend I had issues restoring my MacBook pro using Time Machine. I was left with question marks in the dock for the folloing apps in Bold, the others are not on the dock but they could not be found..
1. Safari
2. LaunchPad
3. Missing Control
4. Mail
5. System Preferences
6. Photo Booth
7. Terminal
8, Itunes
9. Disk Utility
10. iText Express
11. Notes
12. Maps
13. XCode
14. iPhoto
15. Calendar
They were not in Finder, and as the Lauchpad icon was not there I could not check there either. Spotlight was not showing them either. They simply were not there on the Mac.
I checked on Time Machine and they could not be found there either. I don't believe they were backed up by Time Machine in the first place. I do not have any programmes or applications excluded in the TM preferences.
Its interesting that all my 3rd party apps were there, all the missing ones are from the Maverics iOS.
I ended up having to reinstall Mavericks via a VERY SLOW internet connection and hey presto, everything came back to normal.
It was a very tense few hours as I thought I had lost the lot, photo's and itunes collections etc.
Time Machine is sold to us by Apple as the perfect solution to keep your data safe and recoverable.... Really?
I do like Apple products, but this has left me a little unsure about them now, its like the trust and confdence goes when you catch your child stealing and lying to you...The confidence will come back but I guess I will always be a little warey now..
Apple, please do something about this - I have paid through the nose for a robust system that I can rely on, not one that has aged me by 10 years...It appears only the applications where missing. So your own data were safe all the time. However...

It appears the bug is very difficult to reproduce, mainly because in most cases it is only discovered when people try to restore an existing installation. -
I recently purchased a shutter release remote for my IPAD camera but the cord is only three feet long and I need an extension cord. I purchased a 3 banded AV extension but it doesn't work. I have been told that I need an extension cord that has AV and Mic to enable the remote shutter release to work with the extension cord. Can anyone tell me what the correct extension cable is and where I can find one? Thanks.

I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.

I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time during plug-in, I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application.
I request you to help me with the procedure of the same?IMPORTANT - This will reformat your Seagate drive and hence wipe it. If there is anything on your Seagate drive you want to keep, save it somewhere else FIRST.
Plug the drive in.
In Finder select Applications > Utilities > Disc Utilities.
Select the external drive, select Partition option, give it a name (I call mine Mac Backup), select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format and under the drop down menu "Partition Layout" select the number of partitions you want (so if you want the drive to just be for Time Machine, select 1 Partition, if you want part of the drive to be for Time Machine and the rest for something else, select 2 partitions and so on). Click apply and the Disc Utility will partition and reformat your drive ready to use.
When this is complete, open Time Machine in System Preferences. Use Select Disc to select the drive (or if you have multiple partitions, the partition of the drive) you want and you are good to go.
This may be a long way round, but it gives you the option to partition your disc which you may want. -
Repeat: My time machine back up freezes at a partial backup. I keep cancelling and restarting a new back up and it will again freeze up at a slightly different point. Last freeze shows 485bytes of 246.16 GB. My last backup was Sept. 1 !!!!! Help!!!!

That's not needed, but if you want to do it, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a new partition.
