Time machine is working but showing always the same -current- files in brow

Hi,
I'm running Time Machine on an external FW drive. It backups regularly.
I needed to restore backup of photo albums after a crash and I was only able to browse back and see the same album as the current one with no changes (over 2 months!).
Now I need a contact I deleted one week ago, I tried a search in the contacts, I tried to set the screen to show the surroundings contacts, in both cases, TM was able to scroll down to old backups, but only showed the same search (not able to change it or to click anywhere), or the same contact (no old contact appearing in between the two I was watching).
I tried to unselected then reselect the TM drive but no luck. I really need this contact back and TM is my only backup, the contact is as well deleted from my Mobile Me after a week.
Help much appreciated.
Regards.
B.

If you're talking about contacts in your Address Book, first try the things in #E4 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, see this thread, with some other folks that seem to be having the same problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2317886
It does show a workaround. If anybody has reported this to Apple yet, they haven't posted back, so we don't know if there's a better fix.

  • Bridge shows always the same JPGs files crippled

    Hi together,
since yesterday Bridge shows *some* JPGs in a destroyed preview (or no preview).
Screenshot of the Bridge preview panel:
    The curiosity:
I have deleted all the Bridge Cache (manually in "users/library/caches/...."), also the exported cache files in the affected folders.
Then copied the affected files to another folder and renamed them all, hope that Bridge "forged" some preferences I might have not deleted.
I started Bridge new with Option-key and reseted all preferences and all "Caches".
Result: => No affect: The previews are generated new in the same wrong kind as before. For some JPEG-files there are no preview rendered.
Of course these files are all correct, I can open it in Photoshop or in Mac Preview – but in the Camera Raw Window the files are show destroyed.
It drives me crazy because all other folders are not affected – and also no RAW-files are affected, so the ACR seem correct working.
Searching in the web brought no results for me in this special case.
Perhaps anyone of you have a clue?
    Thanks in advance!
    Juergen

What you show is NOT the Bridge Preview Panel but the Bridge CONTENT panel.

  • Time machine completes backup but does not actually backup any files

I have had this problem sporadically with time machine for a while now, most of the time it works great and everything is smooth sailing, but every now and then time machine will run and go through all of the steps but it skips actually backing up any files. For example, if I put a new word document on my desktop right now and tell time machine to back up, everything will go as it should and time machine will run and go through all of the stages (making back up disk available, calculating changes, cleaning up) except it doesn't actually transfer any files. When I go into to time machine the new word document won't appear in any of the backups. Restarting my computer does fix this but it is a very inconvenient way to fix the problem and it also leaves me having to manually go into time machine to make sure that it is in fact backing up files. And no I do not have some weird exclusion in the time machine preferences.

Thanks you for your response. I was wondering if it didn't have to do with disk utility in some way. Just to be clear what do you mean when you say "altering other volumes on the same drive"?
If you have more than one partition on a drive, and add, delete, or resize any of them, Disk Utility does a +*Verify Disk+* on the entire disk. So even if you didn't touch the boot volume, whatever DU does will cause what you've seen.
It is rather odd, that it only affects some of us. Those who have it, have it consistently. It happens on any number of hardware configurations, and I could always reproduce it with a fresh install of SL on an empty partition, so it's clearly nothing to do with any settings, preferences, 3rd-party anything, etc.
This was reported to Apple in October; on November 12 the TM engineers were able to reproduce it. They don't tell us any more than that; all we can do is hope it'll be fixed in a future update.

  • Time Machine not recognizing backup volume is the same

Hope someone can help. I'm having an odd problem with Time Machine in that it doesn't recognize that I have already done a full backup of my MacBook Pro.
A couple things to note, both computers are running Leopard 10.5.7 and the events described below took place over the course of several days (so logouts, shutdowns, etc. have occurred along the way).
    On to the details:
    1) Connected Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II drive directly to MacBook Pro via Firewire, selected the "+Time Machine Backup+" volume as the backup disk (the Studio drive has two partitions), and did a full backup.
    2) Unmounted & disconnected the Studio drive from the MB Pro and connected it to a Mini via a Firewire port.
    3) Shared the "Time Machine Backup" volume from the Mini and mount it on the MB Pro. I attach to the Mini using an Admin account, so have full access to the shared drive.
    4) On the MB Pro I opened Time Machine Preferences -> Change Disk and select "+Time Machine Backup (Mini)+" from the drive list as my backup disk.
At this point TM creates a sparsebundle in the root of the backup disk with the name of the +MB Pro_<mac address>+, which is where it wants to do future backups to, and mounts it on the MB Pro. TM is ignoring the Backups.backupdb folder in the root of the backup disk which contains a folder for the MB Pro (which was created by the initial direct-connected backup).
***? I don't understand why it is creating this sparesbundle rather than simply using the drive as though it were directly connected to the MB Pro.
If I use Time Machine to Browse Other Time Machine Disks it shows me:
    * "MacBook Pro" on "Backup of MacBook Pro" (the sparsebundle)
    * "MacBook Pro" on "Time Machine Backup" (the direct-connected full backup)
    * "Mini" on "Time Machine Backup" (the Mini's backup)
so, TM does recognize that there is a backup "disk" for the MacBook Pro already on the drive in this instance BUT not when I select the disk as a backup target.
    One last piece of information:
On the MB Pro desktop I am currently seeing five drives mounted. The internal hard disk partition 1, int. hard disk partition 2, the +Time Machine Backup+ volume shared from the Mini, another attached volume shared by the Mini (also located on the Studio drive), and the +Backup of MacBook Pro+ sparesbundle.
If I open Terminal and look in /Volumes I see these same drives PLUS +Time Machine Backup-1+
I have no idea where that came from.
I don't want to run into this same situation when I set up Time Machine on my wife's MB Pro. I'll want to do the initial backup of her machine with the Studio drive directly connected too becuase otherwise it will take forever to go over our wireless network.
Does anyone know what is going on here, and more importantly how I can fix it?

    Thanks for the info, Pondini
Wow... That seems like a really bad design.
I can only assume there was a good reason for it. I don't think they did it just to annoy us.
When you backup to a directly attached drive, Time machine copies individual files to (what appears to be) a standard folder structure. If a file is corrupted, you lose one file.
When you backup over a network (one system has a wireless connection the other is connected with an ethernet cable) it creates a disk image containing the file and folder structure. If the disk image file is corrupted you lose your backup.
Is there any flaw to my logic here? On the surface it seems like a dumb decision to put everything in one file.
Only the top few levels (down to the one with a date and time) are normal folders. Everything else is not. What appear to be files and folders are actually "multi-links" (think extra-fancy aliases) to the actual backup copies. That's how every TM backup looks like a full one.
For more details on how it works: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/10/12/roadto_mac_os_x_leopard_timemachine.html
    and: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2007/10/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
But neither you nor I, nor anybody else on this forum, can change it. If you want to complain to Apple, here's the place: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • Can time machine and carbon copy cloner use the same backup drive?

Can time machine and CCC use the same esata backup drive?

Yes, but you will need to first partition the drive so that TM and CCC will backup to their own respective volumes. This way the CCC volume can accommodate a bootable clone.
Be sure the TM volume has adequate space. A TM backup volume should have about twice the capacity of the volume it backs up.

  • Can time machine backups and data live on the same external drive?

I have a 1TB drive, more than enough for my data and backups. Question is, I already have it partitioned as Mac OSX extended (Journaled), and when I plugged it in my new mac with my old data, it said, do you want to use this as a backup drive. I selected yes, not thinking anything. But then I wondered, can I continue saving new data on this drive (music, videos, photos, etc) AND use it as a time machine backup drive, or is it either or? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks!

To expand on Lyssa's answer a bit, it really depends on what other data you want to put there.
If it's something like "scratch" space for editing video, etc., then no problem, except perhaps some contention for the drive while TM backups are running. Be sure to exclude the partition from TM, via TM Preferences > Options.
But if it's important data that's not backed-up elsewhere, then you can let TM back-up that other partition along with your internal HD. That's better than no backup of it at all, but not much.
So, consider backing it up separately, either to another external HD or (especially if it's something like photos or videos that don't change a lot) to DVDs (that you can take off-site for extra security).
But whatever you do, don't put other data in the TM partition. That will probably bite you sooner or later!

  • Restoring full Time Machine backup of a drive--from the same drive

Apparently, I somehow got a full backup of my boot drive on the drive itself.  At least, when I boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc and go to restore from a time machine backup, it shows that I have backups on the same drive.  I'm not sure how this happened; it might have been generated when I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, or I might have specified the wrong target when performing a backup.  Anyway, my file system went belly-up, so I'm wondering:  Can I actually restore this backup even though the backup is located on the same drive?
Difficulty:  So far as I can tell, the backup is not on a separate partition unless this is somehow hidden to me.  It's on the same partition that I boot from.

    Shouldn't be any problem.
Boot from your SL installer DVD (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present). From the installer screen, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.). Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for G5 and earlier) and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When that's finished, select the new volume in the sidebar (indented to the right below the drive) and go to the Erase tab, select Security options and select zero data (one pass is more than sufficient). Click erase. That will take quite some time; probably measured in hours and dependant on the size of the drive.
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.
Shortly into the installation process, you'll be asked if you want to migrate data from another source. Select 'from a Time Machine Backup' and follow the prompts.
    See Pondini's FAQs;
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/19.html
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/SetupAsst.html
That should leave you with the same setup as you had on the previous MB.

  • Finally got Time Machine to work via USB over the network, but...

it is SLOW. I am using AFP sharing and my first backup is going to be 43GB. I left it for 3 hours and it was only at 5GB. At this rate I dont know if I will ever find the time to backup my Macbook. My external is hooked up to my iMac via USB and my MacBook is wireless. I am using WPA security for the wireless network. Does this amount of time sound right? I mean I know it is the first backup, but at this rate it will take 24 hours!

you're doing pretty well. TM backups over a wireless link can be very slow, 1 MB/sec or so and the speed can vary a lot during the span of the backup. There seem to be "hard spots" that really slow things down. These are probably large collections of very small files.
Initial backups should be done via an Ethernet connection to the server.

I was wondering if anybody would be able to help me.
I have recently bought a laptop with a built in camera. However, one of the pictures I have uploaded onto my laptop has become stuck, so whenever I attempt to take a picture or a video by the camera, the picture comes up instead and I cannot take it off. Hi Emilie,
Sorry, but I never heard about this problem. This is really not known to me so I can only give you some suggestions that you should try.
Firstly I would remove the webcam driver and install the latest version. During that you should restart the notebook. The latest drivers you can download here:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers
Make also sure that all Windows update are installed.
In worst case you have to make a new installation of Windows :(
By the way: Which notebook and OS you have?

Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!

  • IPhone 5s restored from 4s all but my photos and won't finish.  Have tried reset and restore several times but always the same thing. Pat bottom of screen it shows downloading but no pictures transfer.

Have tried 4 times to reset, erase and restore but always the same result.  Everything restores except my photos. When I go to photos at the bottom of the screen it says downloading but the pictures never transfer.  Every time I turn my phone on it asks to continue restore but it never finishes. It won't let me upgrade to the latest iOS due to incomplete restoration.

How long has it been since you let the restore just happen? Sometimes photos are what takes the longest to bring back from an iCloud back up. I would recommend that you let it just keep restoring for about 2-3 days and see if more photos come back than what you're experiencing. Also make sure that you are connected to wifi as much as possible so that those photos can be downloaded faster. It is a waiting and being patient kind of thing. I did an iCloud restore from a backup that took 4 days to finish bringing down all my photos.

  • Time machine is invisible but working via remote desktop - magic

    Hello,
Time Machine is backing up properly an external firewire-disk of the server and the internal drive. If I run time machine on the server and restore the external volume - or internal volumes - time machine works but stays invisible. The finder window moves and resizes, the screen seems to be frozen - but it´s time machine invisibly running and I cannot see the stars and the space nor the buttons. But I can click them - I can abort time machine and get back to the finder. I also could try to find the place to click to scroll through time and change the windows´ content. I think I could also restore a file successfully but I did not try. But I cannot see time machine. It worked before I updated to 10.5.3 I think. It´s not the screen resolution in Apple Remote Desktop. And I cannot test the Macmini with a screen because it has no screen - it only is accessable via Remote desktop. It seems to me that the remote desktop client on the server does not send screen data of time machine.
    What can I do?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
I made some more tests. I plugged a Screen adaptor for the TV at the mac mini to have a screen attached. The resolution in remote desktop was PAL and very small but time machine was working and it showed up well.
The result is that time machine needs a monitor to run properly or is it Remote Desktop that needs a monitor? The macmini is brand new and leopard server is 10.5.4.
Are there some ideas to solve this issue.
    Thank you.
    Best regards

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.
