Time Machine observations

I am persisting with this - but I'm still feeling somewhat gloomy about it. Here are some observations:
• Daisy chaining FireWire drives: It seems that Time Machine doesn;t like this. Even if the Time Machine drive is the first drive in the chain. Other apps, such as Carbon Copy Cloner, Finder and Backup are quite happy about this. Time Machine seems to stall and slow right down
• Direct connecting: Time Machine seems happiest if the drive is connected directly to the Mac, and is the ONLY drive in that socket - ie no hubs, no daisy chaining
• Fire Wire hubs: I am not sure if Time Machine likes these, even if your hub is in a different Fire Wire socket on your Mac. In my experience, having a hub can cause problems (or my hub is on the fritz). Since I plugged my other two FW drives into a hub on the other port on my iMac, Time Machine has been a little erratic. It's been "preparing" for the last 30 minutes because "Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|" (that's what the log says anyway)
I don't know what it is Apple has with devices being plugged into the Mac's port rather than a hub. iPods don't like it either, and refuse to mount or even be recognised by iTunes.

Well I am unsure as to why you are getting that flag, but it would be my guess that unmounting and re-mounting tells Time Machine to play it safe and assume that it has missed some file folder changes so it should re-evaluate the entire drive.
However, 30 minutes seems very long. It didn't take 30 minutes to prepare my initial backup for my entire drive (it took roughly 5 minutes to do that).
However, I am also NOT using FireWire. I am using a USB MyBook drive instead.

  • Data Recovery of Time Machine Backup From a Corrupted Drive

I had to install 10.2 and 9.2.2 on an internal drive in my 2003 MDD G4 but first I had to reformat it (and wipe out its data) since it did not have OS 9 drivers installed. No problem thinks I since its contents are backed up to my 500 GB Western Digital HD. Installation of 10.2/9.2.2 was successful but when I go back into 10.5.8 to restore the contents of the newly formatted drive the external drive with the Time Machine backup will not mount. It churns and grinds forever and nothing I've tried (after consulting the WD support web site) helps. It is recognized by Disk Utility but that is all.
Any thoughts on whether/how to recover the lost backup? Many thanks in advance.

Well, I am happy to report a happy ending. Turns out DW had crashed but I initiated the procedure again and it was able to rebuild the drive's directory in a couple of hours. Time Machine then recognized the drive and I was able to restore the contents of the drive on which I installed 10.2/9.2.2 earlier in this saga. I will reformat the external WD drive now and see how it performs before I decide whether it's a keeper or not. Thanks for all comments and observations.
    Yay!
If those are your only backups, please do yourself a favor: do not trust them to that drive! Get a new one, and put TM backups on one, and use the other to regularly update a "clone" or at least home folder backups via CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like.

  • Time Machine not showing backups

Time Machine stopped backing up earlier this month and I have done numerous things to get backups again. Yesterday after upgrading memory on my iMac, not as a fix for Time Machine, I restarted Time Machine and it appeared to be backing up just fine. This morning when I looked at Time Machine preferences it does not display oldest or latest backup and when I open disk it shows 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress and if you look inside package it appears to have backups all the way back to when I started Time Machine back up. I have reformatted the drive during the process of trying to get backups working again and run disk utility and drive checks out fine. When it does a backup it shows progress bar and when complete tells when next backup is. I browsed through the folders in the 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress package and they do appear to be complete backups.

  • Time Machine and a CRY for Help!!!!

    Hi
After 25 years being a windows user I finally came over to Apple this month. I bought a IMAC 24" intel 2.88(OS X 10.5.3) and thought I might as well get a Time Capsule (500GB). I absolutely love the IMAC and wish I had got one years ago. My problem lies with the Time capsule. My setup is a Ethernet cable from the IMAC to the Time Capsule and then the same from the capsule to my broadband modem.
Followed the instructions for backing up, which it did after much trial and effort. Only backed up 21GB. Checked that there was a file in the capsule folder. Great I thought I will try the time machine. Screen drops and the stars are moving but that's it. I cant click on cancel or press escape. The only way I could get out of this was to do a hard reset.
I looked back at the Time machine preferences and no sign of a last back up. Checked that the file was still there in the capsule folder and it was. Sorry for wittering on but can someone please help.
    thanks in advance
    iroth8

While there certainly isn't enough evidence to say for sure, I have to say that I don't think your issue is at all unique to your Time Capsule or your specific configuration. I also just purchased an iMac after using a PC for most of the 25 years or so of home computing (I did have a Mac for a while back in the mid-to-late 80s). I felt like the original thread poster did, I might as well have a backup drive and take advantage of Time Machine. In my case I watched the Apple.com OS 10.5 video and went online and purchased the same G-Drive Q from G-Technology that the Apple Store representative was using. After connecting up the new Ext. Drive using Firewire 800, the popup asked if I wanted to use the drive for backup ... I did want to so I answered yes and sat back and observed my entire Hard Drive being backed up. After several hours, I came back and depressed the Time Machine icon on the Dock and everything worked just like the Video indicated that it would. Unfortunately after 48 Hrs., I came downstairs and noticed my Ext. Drive light was on, but it wasn't making the usual drive sounds it typically had been making every ten minutes or so during the day. I depressed the Time Machine icon and the popup progress indicator said it was connecting to the Server and to Time Machine. This progress bar just kept moving and moving but was actually just "not responding". To make a long story short the only way I could get out of the situation was by learning about a "Force Quit". After doing that procedure, I ultimately had to hold the Power button to shut down the iMac. When I tried to Power back up, all I got was the startup tones and then a white screen. Finely I had to turn off the Ext. Disk Drive and turn it back on again, where upon, everything worked again. I have now gone into the Control Panel and Power Management and unchecked the "Put the External Drive to sleep..." box. We will see over the next few days if that solves the issue or not. In any case my lock up situation was similar enough to your that I thought I would let you know it may not actually have anything to do with your Ext. Drive or its configuration.

  • I am unable to restore my backups from my Time Machine

MacBook Pro – My reformatted system that won't restore from my time machine - HELP PLEASE
I loaded Lion when it first came     out and all my troubles started. (It was the same on my 24” iMac).     Mail particularly hardly worked on either machine after loading up     Lion but that's another story and I wish I had never upgraded to      Lion.
I am now in China and took my     MacBook Pro with me
To avoid mail problems I     eventually used web-mail as all I saw was the coloured spinning     wheel all day long otherwise
Gradually the machine got slower     and slower and I saw that coloured wheel more and more
Eventually a message came up to     say my Bootable Drive was almost full.
I checked and it wasn't full of MY     documents.  I see on this forum it's an Apple problem - reformatting and restoring user files will not help the problem
On 1st November I did a     Time Machine backup that completed OK
Since then I had removed ALL     documents safely to my Sony Vaio that we bought instead of another     Apple Mac.
Despite removing ALL documents and      emptying the trash for two users the HDD continued to fill up     rapidly
I decided to do one more last     backup on Time Machine so I could reformat the system – This     backup never completed
I had to reformat the system as it     was totally not useable by now
I had expected to put a Snow     Leopard DVD in and restore my system without any problem - I have done this before on my iMac
I was unable to point the restore     to my time machine as it has a WD lock partition and Apple restores     don't recognise the drive may be locked!
No problem I thought, as I will do     it later through the tools utility called Migration Assistant
I have tried several times with     Leopard and Snow Leopard but cannot get the utility to work, as it     is obviously picking up the corrupt “LAST” backup (This is a shortcut to the 6th November uncompleted backup
I tried to move the 1st November one to the last and move the other out as “”Corrupt”,     but we are not allowed to change time machine files.  Brilliant idea     but Apple stopped it!
So, I loaded Snow Leopard and got     it to see my Time Machine Files and restored first the Applications     – No problem
Then Library – This failed as     “You haven't permission” - What!  Why?  This is MY Laptop and MY     files.  Apple have to sort out this permission problem.  I have had     it three and a half years and it has driven me mad.  It's a flawed     way of working in my opinion.  It took me three years to empty the     trash because of it.
I then tried to restore the "System" folder which also has a library folder and that failed the same  - Why     doesn't Time Machine restore what it's told to?  Is it because I     called the MacBook Pro  something different?  It saw the backup     files OK and gave me the option of the previous MacBook or my iMac     that I also had on the same drive. I chose the MacBook but it would     NOT restore the system.
    Conclusion
So, I am stuck in China without my     MacBook Pro and unable to restore my system and unable to retrieve     the 1st November backup which was taken properly.
This means that I cannot run any     programmes and do any work
I have wasted two weeks altogether     on all the combined problems and without a usable system
Any ideas how to restore back to     the 1st November please?  Thanks in advance!

    UpdateAfter Advice from Apple
    RESTOREPROBLEMS
I spoke from China on the1st December to a very helpful Senior Apple Technical person.  He gave me my guidelines for a successful restore and we hung up.
Unfortunately, the backup hadn't enough space, so I repartitioned the hard drive and THEN followed his instructions.
At 6 am there was amessage to say it had restored OK (See screen-shot to say it wassuccessful) and so, I pressed OK to restart the MacBook Pro.
All I got was the same as before - a grey spinning wheel.
To cut a very long storyshort, I wasted the whole day trying to make a backup work to no avail. I came to the conclusion that this is yet another example of Lion not working, as I have never had this problem with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I then got a screen shot of a message never seen before and that may help Apple ….
So, I sent them that screen-shot. Restarting did nothing of course.
    Timeto stop the nonsense!
To cut my losses of many days wasted time over the last 5 weeks, I gave up trying to restore and as I have all the data safely tucked away on an external drive, Irebuilt the MacBook Pro with just Leopard.
I then put all theApplications back on one by one and it runs perfectly. Luckily I also had these with me in China!
Ablisteringly quick system on the old Leopard
In fact, Pages and AdobeCS4 are how they were when we purchased the machine 3.5 years ago -Blisteringly quick.
I have a mega large Pages Newsletter about China that I think was over 20 Mb before I shrank it, as it had many photos. This brought the MacBook running Lion to it's knees. On my rebuilt MacBook Pro running Leopard, it ran blisteringly quickly, even before shrinking it.
I managed to finish thenewsletter that I had started on the 21st October and we bulk emailedit out as a PDF 1st December from my MacBook Pro running Leopard.
In fact, the machine isrunning so well, that I think I will stick with Leopard.
    LION
I always suspected the problem with Lion was it was constantly doing SAVES all the time that were in the foreground and not the background that I was unable to type in productively. My own opinion is that the developers had been trying to be TOO clever with Lion and for a busy person like me it crippled my productivity that went down by 50% and then eventually to ZERO %.
    CONCLUSION
I would like to thank the Apple Technical person for his efforts on my behalf and felt that he should receive this update to close the case.
I stated that hopefully he can pass my observations to the LION TEAM Management or to whoever in Apple needs to see this feedback. The dozen or so problems with Lion have already caused us to go and buy a Sony Vaio instead of another MacBook Pro.
This anti-Apple attitude is by a person that for over 3 years was utterly and completely soldon Apple. No more, as Lion killed all my enthusiasm for Apple. My colleague as well. I asked the Apple Technical person to PLEASE pass this on!  Whether he passed the report on I will never know!

  • Time Machine Just Doesn't Work Anymore

I was a happy Time Machine (with Time Capsule) user for months. But it just doesn't work anymore. It takes longer than an hour to do every hourly backup so it is backing up 24 hours a day. It finds hundreds of thousands of files changed every hour and tries to back them up. Finders says only tens of files have been modified all of today. I have tried rebuilding my spotlight indexes, repairing my Time Capsule with Disk Utility and starting over with a brand new backup. But it just backs up hundreds of thousands of files every hour. So I am turning off Time capsule since it is clearly broken. If anyone has any suggestions at all I would welcome them.

    Marcia,
Consider the following, it might give you some ideas:
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
One poster observed regarding Photoshop: “If you find yourself working with large files, you may discover that TM is suddenly backing up your scratch disk's temp files. This is useless, find out how to exclude these (I'm not actually sure here). Alternatively, turn off TM whilst you work in Photoshop.” (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1209412)
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
If you have recently created a new disk image or burned a DVD, Time Machine will target these files for backup unless they are deleted or excluded from backup.
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can created major changes in the structure of your directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer describes this behavior: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. Then pull down the "action" menu (the gear thing) and select "delete all backups" and the older stuff vanishes.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
    *TechTool Pro Directory Protection*
This disk utility feature creates backup copies of your system directories. Obviously these directories are changing all the time. So, depending on how it is configured, these backup files will be changing as well which is interpreted by Time Machine as new data to backup. Excluding the folder these backups are stored in will eliminate this effect.
    *Backups WAY Too Large*
If an initial full backup or subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude itself by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Prefs “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder if you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.
Let us know if any of this helps.
    Cheers!

  • Multiple Yosemite woes: programs won't start, can't enter Time Machine, etc.

    Hello Linc et al.,
I have been having Yosemite problems similar to those discussed elsewhere (e.g. iMac 27" late 2013 and Yosemite) (albeit with 10.10.1, Mid-2010 MacBook Pro): can't enter Time Machine, although it seems to be backing up; programs including Illustrator, EndNote, and Boinc don't start, or only after an hour or two (others, including Microsoft Office, seem okay). They will start normally in safe mode, but not for a newly created user. Many permission repairs carried out (seems okay except for a couple recurring printer-related messages), disk is okay, PRAM and SMC reset. Spent some time with various tech support, so most of these have been tried several times.
The solution here com.apple.xpc.launchd & com.apple.mdworker.bundles pollute logs with errors worked through one restart - there were two mystery uids, owning many files - but not through a second.
I have followed the permission repair procedure from another post (discussions.apple.com/message/27015992#27015992); the initial return was 639, and now it is 0. Restarted since then, nothing appeared to change.
Below is what I get from the test suggested in the first thread mentioned, I hope there is something informative here! I'll study it myself, but don't know what might or might not matter.
    Thanks,
    Barbara

    Thanks,
    Barbara

  • Unable to use a Time Machine backup

I am getting very frustrated, as I cannot use a Time Machine backup the way I want to.
Short story, my Macbook Pro Retina (running Yosemite) is, and have for a while been, a litte buggy and slow, so I wsh to to a clean install of OSX, and use migration assistant to recover files and settings. I have tried to to a complete restore, but this hasn´t helped.
The problem is, the migration assistant can´t find the backups. When I restart with Cmd+R and prompt a restore from TimeMachine backup, it CAN find both mine, and other backups stored on the disk. But after I do a clean install, and get to the assistant, it CAN´T find any of the backups.
The backups are on a WD 2TB disk, connected via my Mac Mini.
I have tried creating another account on the fresh install, and verify disk and permissions. One time, that actually made the assistant find the backups, but I have never been able to recreate this. I did not try to copy the files on that occation, somehow.
I don´t understand how the two backup modes works differently. Complete restore cand find the files, assistant cannot.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The backups are created via a Mac Mini sharing the Time Machine disk. My backup is created as a disk file on Timemachine/Mybackup, and the Mac Mini backup is another level down on Timemachine/backups/Macmini. I don´t know if this has anythong to do with it.
On trying to recover, I have plugged the external drive directly into the MBP.
I have had to go back and to a complete restore every time, but I am not satisfied with this result.
I have tried to explain as good as I can, and will be very grateful for hints and tips.

A possible reason for backups not to be available in Migration Assistant is that the computer doesn't have a name, or the name is corrupt. Open the Sharing preference pane and check the name. If you can't do that, reset the PRAM. Credit to ASC member Csnote for this observation.
Otherwise, starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of the home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of the home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You may have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch. That would be the only point of doing a clean installation.
You'll have another problem because you erased the startup volume. The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of the backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set the backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
              Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of the computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

  • Time Machine no longer sees my External Hard Drive

I am running an Apple iMac 27" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz with MAC OS X v.10.6.4
I have been using a LaCie 500GB External Hard Drive exclusively assigned to my Time Machine Backups. This has been working fine for the past 6 months. Now, this USB externally powered hard drive no longer shows up on my desktop. It no longer shows up in the Finder either.
Where it does show up is in the Apple Menu: About This Mac | More Info... | Hardware | USB | USB High-Speed BUS as "LaCie Hard Drive USB" with all of its specifications:
    LaCie Hard Drive USB:
    Product ID: 0x0951
    Vendor ID: 0x059f (LaCie)
    Version: 0.00
    Serial Number: 152D203380B6
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: LaCie
    Location ID: 0x24300000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 2
HD appears to be spinning and emits a steady vibration that I observed before when it was working fine. One single soft click is heard on startup. Yellow solid light indicates drive is operational. I never see a blinking light when this HD starts up, it shows a solid yellow light right away.
From a "Time Machine Widget", I see that my Time Machine backup is failing with message:
Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target
    Backup failed with error: 19
When I go to Apple Menu / System Preferences / Time Machine, I see that the Time Machine is turned ON with this information:
    Name: Time Machine Backups
    Available: <empty>
    Oldest Backup: <empty>
Latest Backup: Delayed <--- this is in red
Next Backup: when disk is connected
    To resolve my problem:
I tried shutting down & restarting the MAC while the Ext. HD was turned ON but it refuses to appear.
I tried unplugging & replugging at the USB connection but MAC does not respond either way. No nasty message for having improperly disconnected a drive and no message to acknowledge a newly connected drive. The drive is totally ignored.
I can't use the Disk Utility tool to verify or repair the HD because the drive does not appear on the left pane.
Before I declare 6 months of Time Machine backups as forever lost and buy a new backup drive is there anything else I can do?

    W e e e e l l l l l or should I say wheeeeeieeeee! Solved - Thank You
I could not use "Disk Utility" because as I already stated, it did not show the HD on the left pane to allow me to do anything about the invisible drive.
So I followed through with your suggestion to switch the USB cable. This was an easy thing to do as I happen to have another of these LaCie Drives that I use on another of my computers. I turned the faulty drive OFF, switched the cable (the power cable fell off in the process & I plugged that back in), turned the HD back ON, waited about 30 seconds and the MAC recognized the drive and popped it back on my desktop & Finder, then Time Machine started the Backup.
I did not have to restart the MAC.
I was skeptical that the USB cable could be the culprit but indeed it was!
Time Machine completed its backup while I was writing this.
Problem Solved and Thank you k.panic

  • Time Machine no longer working with External Hard drive

    Hello
I have an iMac 24 and an Iomega 500Gb drive. TimeMachine was working fine when I first set it up over Firewire. I then bought a MacBook and tried to use a the same drive to run separate Time Machine backups. I aborted it when I ran out of time as I was going away.
The iMac and the MacBook no longer recognise the Iomega drive as valid. I get an error about the drive being read only.
How can I resolve or reset this to get the iMac backups working? I'll probably buy a portable drive for the MacBook backups.
    Thanks

    mosey,
Unfortunately, your going to have to reformat the drive. There is no fix for the "Read Only" issue at this time.
*_How Should a Time Machine Hard Disk be Prepared?_*
For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve at least double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
    Procedure
Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
    Launch Disk Utility.
It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
    Select the "Partition" tab.
For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Chose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups.)
    Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
    Click "OK".
    Click "Apply".
Now chose the level of secure erase you desire. (More passes means more time)
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups.
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!

    Hi
Error -50 paramErr  Error in user parameter list
Can there be any external hard disks - if so How is/are it/they formatted ? Must be Mac OS Extended (hfs) if used for Video.
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most but not for VIDEO.
What this means in Your situation is above me.
    • free space on internal boot hard disk? How much ?
    Video codec
    • streamingDV, AIC etc. (not .avi, .mp4, .m4v, .wmv etc as they are containers not codecs)
    Pictures
    • in what format ? .jpg, .bmp, .tif, else ?
    Audio
    • from where/what format ? iTunes, .avi, .mp3, .aiff, else ?
    The "com.apple.iMovie.plist" file
Many users has not observed that there are TWO libraries.
    • Library - at root level
    • Library - in user/account folder - THIS IS THE ONE to look into
    from Luke Burns
I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

You need more free space on your hard drive.

After phone support from apple I ended up creating a new project and adding all 117 clips back in individually till I found out what clips flagged and would not allow me to export. I had 3 I deleted and replaced and everything works now 1hr after tedious work....
Where do Your material come from
    • Camera
    • External hard disk
    • USB-memory
And all are connected so that iMovie can find it ?

  • Concerns ALL Time Machine Users. HOW TO MOVE Time Machine backups. Help !

Concerns ALL Time Machine Users :
MOVE (or COPY) Time Machine backups from a "x"To Disk to an "y"To greater disk.
Hello and thank you all for reading me,
First, excuse me if I make language errors (I'm French).
Secundo, I don't know if you'll find something interesting for you
in what I write about Time Machine and my own problems,
but there's a possibility also that YOU could perhaps help me.
I'm talking about Time Machine and his **** Backups.backupdb folder,
containing "*Name of your Mac*" folder,
this folder containing Time Machine backups, format : YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS
Time Machine doesn't recognize the backups it made *IF YOU MOVE THEM*.
I have perhaps a solution in this message.
You'll see below what kind of problem I (and you could) have.
Since 12/01/10, an Apple Adviser Level Two (and me)
are trying to understand how to move backups from TM1To Disk to, let's say, a bigger one.
    My case is TM1,5To.
*Purpose :* Move 19 backups from Time Machine X disk to Time Machine Y disk.
Delete TMX disk Time Machine backups after that.
Make TMY disk the current used Time Machine Disk.
I don't remember exactly what we did before
(we even created a "root" account with password (dangerous to do),
but it didn't solve the problem),
    but we finally copied :
    TM1To > Backups.backupdb > *MacBook Pro* folder (containing 19 backups) into :
    TM1,5To > Backups.backupdb folder.
The Copy application announced *16 hours !* (without antivirus, to remove absolutely).
So I said goodbye and thank you to my Apple Adviser. After *8 hours*, Copy failed.
BUT it had succeeded to copy *4 backups ONLY* (why ?) in TM1,5To.
I immediately verified and checked each of these with Get Info.
They had EXACTLY the same size (Byte to Byte) as in TM1To.
➔ BUT HERE IS MY OBSERVATION :
After designing TM1,5To as Time Machine Disk, I ordered it to Backup (now).
And what did Time Machine do in TM1,5To > Backups.backupdb ?
It created a *NEW folder*, named *MacBook Pro 2* !
    ➔ *I HAVE NO ACCESS* to TM1,5To > Backups.backupdb > *MacBook Pro* (4 backups copied from TM1To, remember) ;
    ➔ while I still *HAVE ACCESS* to TM1To > Backups.backupdb > *MacBook Pro* (19 backups) ;
    ➔ *AND I HAVE ACCESS* to TM1,5To > Backups.backupdb > *MacBook Pro 2*,
where Time Machine makes actually his backups.
*NOTE :* If you *change the name* of your computer,
Time Machine *changes automatically the name* of the folder who is in Backups.backupdb folder.
➔ ① I have *never seen* such protections (Sharing and Permissions).
You are not allowed to do anything. I've tried to change permissions,
first : "R+W", after that : "Make (Me) the owner", I can tell you : DON'T DO IT !
➔ ② It's impossible to install an OS on a Time Machine disk
(I thought it would allow better permissions).
OS Installer detects the existence of a Backups.backupdb folder
and refuses to install on this disk or partition.
I have now the bad intent to install minimal OS X
    1) after deleting (how ?) this folder (but not its contents, how to move it ?)
and 2) declare *after that* the disk as Time Machine disk.
➔ ③ Time Machine doesn't backup OTHER Time Machine backups
(who are in an ancient-not-choosed-for-backups Time Machine disk) NOR backups this disk
(detects, once again, the existence of a Backups.backupdb folder).
AND you can't *absolutely not remove backups from the folder the're in*
(for me, *MacBook Pro* or *MacBook Pro 2*).
➔ ④ I didn't have time to do it, but I think there would perhaps be a solution
in restoring backups in partitions specially created to receive them (having the same name,
that sort of thing) and then re-backup these partitions (vicious and complicated).
There is a function on Mac OS X Install DVD : start with it, and then (do not install)
choose "*restore from Time Machine backup*" from the menu bar (it's called "Utilities", I believe).
    ➔ ⑤ I *absolutely don't understand* what follows :
    — If I add (in my TM1To disk) the bytes of the 19 backups
in Backups.backupdb > *MacBook Pro* folder, I obtain about *1,8 To*.
    — It's impossible (and not french).
    — When I check the size used with Disk Utility (NOT with Get Info),
    I find a correct (?) size : *about 750 Go*.
    — What are Time Machine backups made of ?
It can't be aliases (because of their size, and because *aliases suppose originals,
and where could they be ?*), or am I wrong and becoming crazy ?
➔ ⑥ If you refer to the numbers shown at the end of this text (*4 backups*),
you'll see I could *delete duplicate elements* inside these 4 backups,
to win space (but *what kind* of space *if I delete aliases* ?).
Back-In-Time (see below) says he does it.
BUT is it really the OLDEST items I have to destroy (see ⑤),
when I don't know with what kind of ARTEFACT I'm acting ?
What does Time Machine delete to create more backup space ?
Is it REALLY the OLDEST backups it treats, or duplicates, OR ?
    *What you can do :*
Find and go to Tri-Edre.fr or Tri-Edre.com/fr site (it's a french company
that creates small Mac applications since fifteen years at least,
    I think I already bought them several programs in 1990) ;
Their program *Back-In-Time 1.4.4* is free (Trial) and complete to download (with PDF docs too).
It is *ENTIRELY DEDICATED* to Time Machine and *things you can't do* with.
    Price is about 30 €, I think it's worth.
The TRIAL version you will obtain can only work on the LAST Time Machine backup,
but you will see what's featured *AND :*
You will ACCESS to ANY Time Machine backup you want
(It has to be the last of a serie of backups, but the serie you want.
I've bought the application and own an activation key, but you understand I can't give it to you
(it would not be ethic) and anyway you would be obliged to disconnect AirPort, Ethernet etc.
•➔ I have bought the application because I thought (it's said in PDF FAQs) I could IN THE END move Time Machine backup files, but it cannot, (I'm afraid).
*BUT ANY ACCESS PROBLEM IS SOLVED.*
•➔ Back-In-Time 1.4.4 can *delete :* duplicate backups, complete backups,
or duplicate items inside one or several Time Machine backups,
things that I believe impossible with Time Machine itself
    (I've seen it offers to delete ALL occurences of an item) ;
•➔ The application can also restore anything you want, where you want
(but I think Time Machine does it too ?)
•➔ Believe it or not, but since I've bought it on 15/01,
I've only worked about 2 hours (no, much more) on it
and didn't make sufficient progresses (enhancements ?)
to talk of it with sufficient experience (I'm a bad guy, don't you think ?)
•➔ Tri-Edre offers on-line support, e-mail support (and so on),
and I EVEN didn't manage to join them, because I did many other things,
and also somewhat have been disgusted *not to be able to move* or copy
*(accessible by Time Machine after that)* backups,
and I also didn't succeed (*another Time Machine inconvenient*) to DESTROY an ".inProgress"
Time Machine (package) which doesn't work anymore (several interruptions while active),
date (and name) 2010-01-27-164345.inProgress, but is used (*with failure results*)
by Time Machine (it's turned off till I find how to destroy its **** ".inProgress" package.
•➔ I've asked my Apple Adviser Level 2 to wait for news from me
before working himself on the problem, and I think I will send him this message
to prove I haven't forgotten him.
•➔ I'll send it to Tri-Edre too, in the same move.
I hope those remarks to be useful for somebody, tell me if it has helped.
I will also publish this in any Time Machine topics I find here, and in MacRumors site too.
As you can see, I need help too … Does anybody have an idea ?
Perhaps if I used a specific Copy software, it could work ?
You'll see below an example of some time I've spent to study my problem
    (you will think I'm crazy).
With my kind regards, and good luck if you have other Time Machine problems !
    Olivier Herrbach

    Dear James Pond,
Thank you once again, and, don't be afraid, I will be as short as possible,
but I need to use your last reply (I've cut all what was already said).
JP ➔ You can copy an entire set of backups, but you cannot copy part of it successfully. See #18 etc.
JP ➔ Read this from the first paragraph: "you cannot copy only selected backups,
or merge two (or more) sets of backups." The structure of the backups simply will not allow it.
I've read it, and found it regrettable. And I've also read, after that, what were the solutions under Leopard and Snow Leopard, and my conclusion is that it's a *dead end* for me. In short,
    — I can't move (by drag and drop) the 1To's Backups.backupdb folder (containing MacBook Pro, 19 backups, access) to 1,5To, because there exists already the Backups.backupdb folder created by copy on 12/01 with Apple Assistance (containing [MacBook Pro, 4 backups of 19, no access] and [MacBook Pro 2, 15 backups, access]). I don't even know if it could be deleted by the copy (and I don't wanna do that anyway) ;
    — I can't rename (and what for, I already forgot it) any Backups.backupdb folder nor delete it ;
    — I can't copy any Computer'sName folder (entire set containing backups), being in a Backups.backup.db folder, into another Backups.backupdb folder ;
    — I can't copy any (or all of an entire set) YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS backup(s), being in a Computer'sName folder, into another Computer'sName folder (even if it would be empty).
    — Saying NONE in Time Machine Preferences and putting it to OFF is simply no use.
All is said. What I can try to do is :
    — Delete (not with Finder, but with Back-In-Time) all duplicate things I find in all backups and also entire duplicate backups (I have full access to all with the software) ;
    — Restore each of the reduced-to-minimum backups obtained in specially right-sized partitions wearing the YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS name of each restored backup. Time Machine doesn't backup his backups, but will backup these partitions.
I'm afraid to be actually completely running out of the target, when I read what I write … It's time to go to bed !
Reminder (OH) : Where did you find these amazing informations ?
JP➔ Some of it is detailed here: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/10/12/roadto_maco[]sx_leopard_timemachine.html
    ➤ Thank you ;
    JP➔ and here:
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2007/10/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
    ➤ Thank you too ;
JP➔ You have to understand the structure. When TM does the first backup, yes, it copies everything.
On subsequent backups, it copies what's new or changed, but also makes "hard links" (sort of like aliases) to the copies of the things that didn't change. That's how it can only back up a few things each time, but show you a complete "snapshot" of the way your entire system looked at the time of every backup.
➤ I'll do my best to understand.
JP➔ Time Machine deletes backups under two conditions. See the first part of #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions User Tip, also at the top of this forum.
Under normal circumstances, you should not have to delete any backups. See the rest of #12.
➤ I understood why Time Machine didn't delete oldest backups : they were not weeklies ones.
Reminder (OH) : How can I destroy the (corrupted ?) not working "2010-01-27-164345.inProgress" in 1,5 To, which causes Time Machine to abort any backup of any size I ask ?
JP➔ Why do you think it's corrupted? TM is designed to "recover" a partial backup.
➤ I'll verify that with the little Tools/Apps I discovered in your FAQ User Tip document and downloaded immediately.
Why didn't Apple tell me anything ? It's my fault, I'm perhaps not clear and not demanding enough more from them.
JP➔ You cannot install OSX on a disk containing TM backups. That's because they need to be on separate disks.
Technically, you could put them on separate partitions of the same disk, but that would not be a good idea.
➤ I never told you that (there would be no interest at all). I talked about the same location, to see if it would allow me more permissions, but if all works without doing it, it's really no use.
JP➔ Sorry, I don't know what that means.
➤ I'm sorry, I didn't explain : "but if all works" meant : Copy Backups.backupdb, "without doing it" meant : Install OSX.
➤ If I install an OSX BEFORE, Time Machine will REFUSE completely to backup on it, it's understood.
JP➔ Correct. The partition you're running from will not be an option in TM Preferences > Select Disk. That prevents TM from backing-up it's own backups!
➤ Would it be so absurd ? Maybe it could resolve my actual problem ?
I think you are right, but I don't know why. I trust you.
Reminder (OH) : "I will not bore you again except if I don't find a specific answer to an unknown-never-seen-incredible malfuction."
JP➔ Don't worry about that -- thats what this forum is for, especially if you're still having problems.
➤ It's seems in fact that there is no possible solution, except what I said above and is certainly crazy/out of subject.
Just try to be as clear and concise as you can.
And please don't post the same things repeatedly -- it wastes your time and ours, and can confuse other folks.
➤ You're absolutely right and I tried to do so this time, and I'm sorry because I see it's still (far) not enough (short).
Thank you once more. I wish you a good evening and week-end. Here it's 01:40 AM.
    With my kind regards

  • Time Machine backup FROM multiple drives?

I'm in the process of choosing a new MacPro, someone on these forums recommended Digilloyd's Mac Performance Guide as a good place to get help setting up a new mac for speed. The simplified version of what he advocates is replacing the stock internal drive with an SSD drive, on which you put the OS, apps & home folder. He then recommends creating a 0-raid stripe from 3 other drives to separate & hold your data, then using the forth internal bay drive (or another 0-raid stripe of the leftover, slower portions of various partitions of the drives) for Time Machine.
My question is, can Time Machine backup both drives (boot & data raid-0) or would I have to choose one of them?
    +The more I read, the more confused I get+.

OK, I've scanned through the various articles. My thoughts are still essentially the same, and that is just how effective the entire system is when using multiple partitions from several drives to combine into multiple RAIDs. In reality this is not speed effective if the RAIDs need to be accessed concurrently. A read/write head can only be in one place at a time meaning that when one partition on the drive is being accessed, the OS cannot concurrently access another partition on the same drive.
Essentially this is how I understand the configuration at a simplistic level. Let's suppose we have two hard drives that we'll call Drive A and Drive B. Each drive is partitioned into two equally sized volumes that we'll refer to as follows:
    ....................... *Drive A* ......................... *Drive B* ......
    Volume................. 1 ..................................... 3 ............
    Volume................. 2 ..................................... 4 ............
Now, we will make two RAID arrays. RAID A uses Volume 1 and Volume 3, and RAID B uses Volume 2 and Volume 4.
Suppose you want to copy data from RAID A to RAID B. In order to do this the OS must first copy data from RAID A before it can write the data to RAID B. However, if RAID A was created using two separate drives (say, Drive A and Drive B,) and RAID B was created using two separate drives (say, Drive C and Drive D,) then the OS can copy from RAID A while concurrently writing to RAID B. This is physically possible because two read/write heads are involved instead of one. Theoretically the second construct is going to be much faster than the first construct.
My second observation is with regard to the reliance on external storage. A 2nd or 3rd generation Mac Pro's SATA bus is capable of a data interface rate of 3.0 Gb/sec. Firewire 800 is capable of 800 Mb/sec. The MP's internal SATA bus can support data transfer rates nearly four times that of Firewire. A modern hard drive is capable of saturating the Firewire bus, but not the internal SATA bus. The higher interface rate of the SATA bus means it's much better suited for truly fast RAID arrays. This is not the case for the Firewire bus.
External Firewire arrays are better suited for storage that does not require frequent or fast access.
Now with all this said it makes more sense to fully understand what your overall storage needs are then consider suitable designs. One need not rely on complicated RAID arrays if they aren't required. The focus should be on data access, data storage, and backup needs.
Although it's nice being able to brag at the cocktail party about having a fast SSD for your boot drive, let's consider how often you even need to boot the computer. I put my computers to sleep when they aren't in use. I never boot the computer unless a software update requires it or the computer has crashed completely. I haven't had the latter occur very often - mainly when I'm experimenting. Literally days, weeks, or months may go by before I reboot the computer. So a fast SSD boot drive would be for me a hugh waste of money.
My 1st generation Mac Pro is set up for my needs. It has four 500 GB fast Hitachi enterprise level hard drives. I use enterprise level drives that cost more because the computer is always on, so I want drives that will be reliably working. I used to have four Maxtor 300 GB drives that lasted for four years before I replace them with the Hitachis. My setup has one drive partitioned into a startup volume and a Boot Camp volume. One drive is my 'scratch' drive used for different OS system versions and/or seed testing. Two drives are configured as a mirrored RAID and used as the primary backup for the boot volume. The boot volume is 450 GBs and the Windows volume is 50 GBs. There's no backup for the Windows volume at the present time. Backups are usually done in the late afternoon using a backup utility. Presently that utility is Synk Standard, but I've also used Synchronize! Pro X and Carbon Copy Cloner. Backups are done on a fixed schedule in the background so they are virtually transparent to me. I use a mirrored RAID for backup to provide redundancy. If one backup drive fails hopefully the other will still be usable to protect the backup. I also have one external Firewire drive that contains a clone of the startup volume. The clone is updated monthly by incremental backup. It's for security in the worst case scenario that both drives in the mirrored RAID were to fail simultaneously.
Now, my need for frequent and fast access to data such as might be needed for streaming music or video is non-existent, so my configuration is one that is well-suited to my needs. You'll note that it's both simple and practical while providing data backup that's doubly secure.

  • Time Machine disk not mounting after sleep

    Greetings,
I am having a problem with the external USB disk (500GB Iomega) that I have set up for Time Machine not remounting after my iMac wakes back up. Nothing I have tried, short of rebooting, seems to cause the Mac to notice the drive. I have tried turning the drive off and back on, but that didn't work, and neither did unplugging and re-plugging the USB cable. (I suppose obviously) Time Machine won't do any backups and complains that "The storage location for Time Machine backups can't be found." Time Machine Set Up says "Next Backup: When Disk is Connected." If I reboot, the disk will show up and Time Machine will commence backups, but then, after the machine sleeps, I have the same problem again.
When I first plugged the drive in last night the computer immediately recognized it, mounted it, and asked me if I wanted to use it for Time Machine. I didn't have to do anything. I then successfully started Time Machine and it did its initial and several hourly backups as expected. Then the machine went to sleep and the disk never came back (short of a reboot).
The computer is a brand new 24-inch, 2.8Ghz, iMac with Leopard installed from the included DVD immediately after opening the box - I did nothing before installing Leopard.
This is my first Mac (I am a Unix refugee) so I may very well be doing something entirely stupid, but surely external disks should still be mounted (or automount) after the computer returns from sleep. What am I doing wrong? I also don't see any way to force Leopard to mount the drive, but I probably just don't know where to look.
To be completely clear... the drive is plugged directly into the iMac on USB, no external hub. There is no networking involved with this disk. I didn't make any kind of settings to the disk (either to the disk itself- there aren't any, or on the iMac when I plugged the disk in). The only thing I did was answer "Yes" when Time Machine popped up a window asking if I wanted to use the new disk for backups. Last time the disk was mountet (before the computer went to sleep again) I ran the Disk Utility and it said the drive was fine.
    Thanks,
    Mark
P.S. I'm sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere but I couldn't find it. Like I say, I'm new to the Mac and to these forums, so please forgive me if this post is redundant.

    Greetings,
    intelligenceresigned wrote:
Ok, I went into console, and forced my iMac to sleep to see what the console would show was actually happening. I am not a very computer savvy person, but this is what the console said:
    Nov 8 21:50:27 steve-freunds-computer kernel[0]: USBF: 48332.754 AppleUSBEHCI[0x52ab000]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 3, EP: 2)
I believe this may be related to the problem. The AppleUSBEHCI appears to identify the offending driver/controller as the EHCI controller (Enhanced Host Controller Interface), or the controller that handles usb 2.0 High Speed (usually usb 1.1 and 2.0 Full Speed are handled by something that would be called a UHCI or Universal Host Controller Interface) USB High Speed is the fastest of the three usb speeds and although the interface is compatable with the slower speeds, works rather differently than the other two. Beyond that I'll have to look into what this message means (I'm brand new to the Mac - I've only had this one a couple of weeks).
*Could others that are seeing this problem please post how many usb ports on the computer, not total devices connected to hubs or anything, but actual, physical ports on the computer that they are using?* Experimenting a little, on mine at least, I have not had the problem discussed in this thread when only two (out of the three available) of the physical USB ports on the Mac are used. Again on mine at least, it also doesn't seem to matter what, with the exception of external hubs, is plugged into the ports. Replacing the external drive with a flash drive or iPod Touch produces the same results, so it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the Iomega drive that I started seeing the problem with - it may be that that was just the third thing I plugged in (or not - I realize that I am a sample of one).
It also seems to be that things connected to an external hub continue to work after the other two ports have failed. This is probably why most keyboards (mercifully) keep working - they are usually hubs (Apple's external ones are). I can't guarantee this however because I haven't really tested it - just observed it so far to be the case for me so far. Hubs do work differently than ordinary usb "functions" as the usb spec calls them.
    Lastly...
If you have Xcode installed (assuming you have it installed in the default /Developer location) there is a tool in /Developer/Applications/Utilities called "USB Prober" that can provide some useful USB information.
In my case, once a device stops working I see the status of the non-functioning devices reported as:
High Speed device @ 2 (0xFA200000): ............................................. External HD (did not respond to inquiry - 0xe00002ed, might be Suspended)
High Speed device @ 3 (0xFA400000): ............................................. HP Color LaserJet 2605dn (did not respond to inquiry - 0xe0004051, might be Suspended)
And indeed the usb ports in question do appear to be behaving as if the host (the Mac) has them suspended - but I can't be entirely sure. I will try to look into this some more later if I can.
    Thanks,
    Mark
P.S. To save questions: I've tried all the easy stuff: Switched cables, swapped out the hub I have on one of the ports, tried different devices in the ports (so far an HP printer, Iomega external disk, iPod Touch, and Sony usb flash drive). Nothing resolved the issue. My keyboard and mouse are connected to a 2.0 High Speed hub. I've tried using another hub, but it didn't make any difference.

  • Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
    I've:
    - Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
    - Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
    - Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input?  I don't think it is on the WD side.  Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive?  Help!
    Thanks,
    Dave
