Time Machine on USB Raid

Hi all,
I'm new to Macs and I'm setting up a Time Machine Backup. I have three USB disks. I want plug them into a hub and use them as a raid set for time machine.
When I disconnect and reconnect the USB, will it all re-establish itself? ie, will the raid set reappear, and will time machine continue to backup to it?

USB? not with its paltry bandwidth, and it will be so much slower than a single drive.
If you must use USB, and USB3 isn't even around the corner, just get one decent case. FireWire would be preferable.
If you have an ExpressCard slot, then you can add FW400 or even eSATA.
JBOD on USB... horrid.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
Click Time Machine
Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

My MacBook w/ OSX 10.6.8 cannot access my external Time Machine Backup USB Drive. It says it is a Read Only drive. When I went to change permissions I found all pernissions were listed as "Custom" and I could not reset them to "Read Write". Any help!

This can be done easily with ethernet.
Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

Can Time Machine backup USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme Base Station

I need a new N based wireless router. I would prefer to get just the $179 Base Station and not the $299 Time Capsule. I already have a nice external USB 500GB drive that I would connect to the AEBS. So, once I have this new wireless router/base station installed at home and I have the external USB drive connected to it, can my new Macbook Air with a USB connected 400GB drive be used to backup what is on the Macbook Air and also backup the 500GB USB drive info that is connected to the extreme base station?

I found this when searching Apple's web site but it is old, October 2007, and said it could not be done. Has this changed since then?

Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard can be used to back up to many kinds of Mac OS Extended-formatted drives, but it does not support AirPort Extreme's AirPort Disk feature.
Time Machine can back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing, or to a Leopard Server volume, or an Xsan storage device.

Centralized Time Machine Backup on RAID 6 enable NAS

Hello. I have over 100 Mac computers on my network. I want to have Time Machine backups on each of these machine to a Centralized RAID 6 enabled NAS. All Machines are running Snow Leopard. Can anyone please guide me how to setup this. Thank you in Advance.

Time Machine to a Raid 5 Array

I bought a brand new tower a few weeks ago. This is our file server and is in production.
The problem is that the machine was purchased with a raid 5 array however the OS was installed on the main drive our database software is also on this drive.
I would like to know if its possible to use time machine to do a restore of the systems data to the raid array and then set it as the boot drive.
1. Will this work and are there any potential issues with this method.
2. Is there a better way to do this.

Yes, there are issues with having your operating system on a storage array. Were there a drive failure you would lose everything on the array including the ability to boot the system. Keep the OS where it is, and use the array for its intended purpose - storage.
You should also consider another array that you can use as backup for the existing one. Perhaps a mirrored array so your backup has a backup.

Restore Time Machine backup to Raid 0 (Striped set)?

I've been struggling with setting up my Mac mini (late 2012) server with a Striped RAID set and then restoring a Time Machine backup to the new RAID 0 volume. Here are the steps I have undertaken:
Bought a 3TB Airport Time Capsule and created a full restore of my existing Time Machine backups to it.
My Mac mini has dual 1TB hard drives. Pressed Command + R on bootup and entered recovery mode.
Using Disk Utility, I created a Striped RAID set by adding both my 1TB drives as slices to a new RAID set and clicked on Create.
After the RAID set was created, I exited Disk Utility.
Clicked on Restore from Time Machine Backup.
The process fails as it cannot create a Recovery Partition on a RAID set.
After much exploration, I think the problem can be resolved by attempting to Reinstall OS X on Step 5 and then attempting a Time Machine restore after the core OS is in place. Thoughts?

Additional Information
A Recovery partition cannot be created on RAID volumes. If your startup device is a RAID volume, you back up and reconfigure your computer to use a non-RAID boot volume. If needed, create a separate RAID volume for data which is not the target of the OS X installation. You can also create an external, bootable drive with a Recovery partition, as described above.

Time machine - ext USB drive - failure

After reformatting & partitioning an external USB drive, I can't get Time Machine to do a back up on it (I've been using TM on several macs, including this one, and this drive, for years). The backup begins and after copying a few GBs of data, I get the message "the backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk"
I have repaired the disk with Disk Utility, without success. I've erased the disk with Disk Utility & then repaired it. I've restarted many times. I can't see what the problem is.
The mini's internal HD is 320 GB; the external drive is 1TB, in 2-500 GB partitions. One partition is used for TM, the other for a daily SuperDuper backup. The SuperDuper backups are working fine.

As Mr. Ross pointed out above, start Console and check the logs. Find the error message "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk," then look for preceding related errors. In my case I saw a bunch of Disk I/O errors that turned out to be a defective hard disk. Every time the backup got to a specific size (and presumably a specific location on the drive), Time Machine would fail and the disk would occasionally unmount by itself.

New Macbook Air transferred by Time Machine Backup USB--fan/temps

I just got the last version of the macbook air, with 120HDD and 1.86 cpu. I thought that I would have to try to transfer everything from my Imac 27" through wifi transfer but when I started up the macbook air it asked if I had a time machine backup I would like to use through USB (which I have used many times before to basically transfer all my data, applications, and settings.) It took a while and the macbook air's fans kicked in during the transfer, which is from the Imac with snow leopard. total transfer was around 45gb. I thought this type of transfer wasn't possible. I also did a long software update after the transfer.
MY QUESTION: could any of this account for the macbook air running hot now, fan at about 6200rpm. I am in Paris and it is very hot here now, so maybe this accounts for it. I'll see in the morning. I am just wondering if the machine will run hot now because perhaps because of the type of transfer I executed, which might have included programs or apps not directly related to the macbook air itself. Again, we are in a heat wave here so perhaps this contributes to it. Don't these machines run rather quietly?
any advice would be appreciated. I could always start again, do a reinstall, etc. but except for the fans running, I have everything I need on the machine and would really prefer not buying the external dvd ir starting over again.

I learned that the macbook air shipped with Leopard, but after migrating everything over from my Imac 27" with Snow Leopard, my system now on the Macbook Air is exactly what I have on the Imac. After the initial backup from Time Machine I did a software update, which brought the system up to 10.6.4. I suppose on some level part of one system did transfer over to the Macbook Air, or at least it updated the system that was shipped on the Air. I did call Apple and was told that if there were issues during the Time Machine backup the system would have alerted or panics would have occurred. The guy wasn't 100% sure, but felt that the backup went normally.
The Air seems to work fine, but the fans kick up from the base of 2500rpm when I watch a video or download video files for a few minutes as an experiment. I don't want to do a complete re-install with the original DVD discs, with all of the trouble that implies, if the machine is going to run rather hot with fans increasing in any case. I suppose that's why I am looking for confirmation one way or another.
It was suggested that I log out and open another account empty of data and see if that makes a difference.
If the machine will run cooler with a re-install, no problem. But it sounds as if all of that could be for naught.
Any other comments would be appreciated.

For 2+ years I used a USB hard drive shared off my Airport Extreme to host time machine backups. I just switched internet providers solely so that i could go back to using my airport extreme and sharing a backup disk. But time machine no longer shows it as an available drive...and I found this

which states: Time Machine is not supported with USB hard drives that are connected to an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme device.
This is a pretty big step backwards as far as I'm concerned.....are there are any ways around it?

Time Machine Setup using Raid Enclosure

I want to use Time Machine to backup my entire system (approx 6TB) including a very large Itunes Library, movies and photo's/video's. I purchased a sans 8TB raid enclosure and intend to run it in SPAN mode. At this juncture I am using a fire wire 800 connection pending installing a RAID controller card. The configuration is running on a MacPro (2007 Model)and 10.6.4 OS.
Which format should I use: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or Mac OS Extended?
Will the RAID Controller Card perform better than the Fire Wire 800?

Use Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Yes, it will run faster from a RAID card than Firewire.

Time machine - migrate USB setup to AirPort Extreme ?

I use to backup to an external USB drive using Time Machine, great!
Now that I have just bought an AirPort Extreme router and that I've connected the USB drive to it, I wonder if it's possible to backup over the air without erasing the previously backed up data?
I would like to use the backups already on the drive because it's so long to backup these 140GB again over the air.

Time Machine from USB to Airport Extreme

I recently bought a airport extreme and would like to move my Time Machine backup to the network so I'm not tied down all the time. However when I moved it to the network it wants to make a full machine backup (like it was starting from new). Is there any way to keep the backups going as they were without having to sacrifice 70GB on my drive or reformatting and losing my 2 years of backup?

Any issue using Time Machine on USB drive with AirPort?

Are there any issues using a USB drive attached to an AirPort Extreme with Time Machine? My guess is no, but figured I would ping the forum and see if there's something I have not thought of. I know Time Capsule does this, but I don't have that - I have an AirPort Extreme.
The drive is within my network and not exposed to anyone unless they can connect
My password is required to access the Time Machine files
Any security implications not covered by these two points?
I'm currently using a USB drive I attach/detach from my MacBook Air and it would be much more convenient to backup to the drive connected to the AirPort. The first backup will probably take a day short of forever being over the air and not the wire, but after that I imagine it would nicely run in the background.

The correct answer is yes. First off, Apple does NOT support Time Machine backups to external USB HDDs attached to the AirPort Extreme ... although they do for the Time Capsule.
Please check out this excellent Pondini article which provides some details on why this would not be a good idea.

Time Machine and USB Drive

I use Time Machine to backup my datas. The problem is that my HDD (on my MAC) was full, and added an Firewire DD on my MAC. Is it possible to include my firewire in the backup on Time Machine ( no problem with the capacity of this drive)?
