Time Machine - Permissions and Restoring

I've got a problem which is causing me serious problems. I'm working with APPLECARE and have been the the Genius Bar. Part of this problem (I know now) started with me not knowing the correct HOME User name. Thus, when I installed new HD, I created a new HOME user name. Now, when I attempt to restore, I'm not getting the "past history" of the TM backups and it's not allowing me to do current backups because it says that I do not have permission to back up the machine.
All of these accounts I've previously created have been administration accounts so, I should have permission to do whatever.
When I use my Snow Leopard disk to reinstall, I can see all of the backups from Time Machine and it allows me to chose anyone I like. The problem comes after the backup is restored, I can no longer see the "past backups" and Time Machine tells me that I do not have permission to currently back up the machine or look at previous backups.
What's a guy ta do?

. . . continuing to reinstall the software from the Snow Leopard disk. When I do so, I'm able to see all of the backups and am able to choose one. Once I chose the date to restore and the system is restored, that is the ONLY date and information that I'm able to view. TM tells me that I DO NOT have permission to view the other information on the TM HD.
Yes, if you restore the entire system (per #14 in the link above), that's exactly what happens: the *entire system* is restored, exactly the way it was at the time of the backup. If you then do another full system restore of a different backup, yes, that will erase the previous version.
But that should restore all users, data, settings, etc., as of that date. Then if you have problems getting to some of the other users' data, you should be able to copy it (perhaps with some difficulty), from those user accounts to your.
Or, are you saying that not everything is restored?
This is my most pressing problem at this point and need a way to determine what is the user name (I should remember psw) is to view AND restore all of the incremental dates of backups.
I do not understand what you're saying here. Every TM backup is a "snapshot" of the way your *entire system* looked at the time of the backup. Each one is, in effect, a full backup.
If you didn't do a full restore, please explain exactly what you did.
If you did, but everything isn't on your system, please explain: are all the users there?
If it's on your system, but you can't copy it, we can show you how to do that.

  • HT201250 Does Time Machine backup and restore Bootcamp?

I am replacing defective hard drive in an iMac that I primarily use as a pc under Bootcamp.  I have to find some way to clone and restore the bootcamp partition.  I was told today by a Genius at the Apple store that I should buy a 2 TB external (which I did for $150)  and run Time Machine.  He assured me that my bootcamp partition would be backed up along with the entire mac partition and that I would be able to restore everything perfectly on the new hd. Now that I am home and continuing my research, I can't find anywhere that says it will work.  Documentation on Time Machine fails to  mention bootcamp.  So, does Time Machine backup and restore bootcamp or not?  And will it be bootable after the restore?  Help!

I think you've got it! I have never used WinClone so I cannot attest to how well it will work, but it's pretty much all lthere is. You will have to create a new Boot Camp partition on the new drive, and it should be the same size as the partition you cloned.
Be sure you prep the new hard drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Quit DU upon completion and return to the installer. Now install Snow Leopard or restore from your Time Machine backup.

  • Time Machine permissions during restore

I have several PCs sharing folders from a Mac Server using SMB. Everything works beautifully. The Server has a time machine volume that automatically backs up the working directory.
On occaision, its necessary to restore a file from TM. But, logged is as the Administrator, I can not access the folders or files (the dreaded red "-" is attached at the folder level). When I "Get Info" and look at permissions for the folder, they are reset to ownership by a single user, not an Administrator, even though I have verified the working folder on the Server volume is owned by the Administrator.
I must log in as the user, restore, then CHOWN and CHMOD, then Propogate. Is there a bug in the OSX and TM that I am unaware of?

I shut down the machine after it sat at "Transferring Network Settings, Less than a minute remaining" for about an hour. I started it up and it acted as though the restore had finished. Hoping everything is actually working. Fingers crossed.

  • Time Machine Backup and Restore

I went to the Time Machine preference dialog box and it opened up to a line up of files. I then clicked on the Folder for "Todaty at..." then clicked on "restore" but nothing is happening.
Is something suppose to show up on the screen?
The only thing showing is the line up of past folderrs and stars and the universe creeping by.
I keep on clicking on the restore button but nothing is happening.
The only way out is to click on the cancel button but then everything stops...

You keep saying you "can't install" or "can't restore," but it's still not clear what, exactly, you're doing and where, exactly, it goes wrong.
If you want to do a full restore from your Time Machine backups, see #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  That has very detailed instructions, complete with screen shots.  Please follow it carefully, and tell us exactly which step you're on (a, b, c, etc.) and what message you get or what you don't see that you should.  You can't print those screens, so make notes if you have to so we can tell what's what.
If you want to install OSX, follow the instructions in the Reinstalling OSX section of the pink box in Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.  Again, tell us exactly what message you get, or what you don't see that you should, at which step, because you can't print those screens, either.

Can time machine (which is on a case-sensitive formatted hard drive) which backs up a case sensitive partition, restore to a case insensitive partition?

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • Unable to boot after Time Machine full system restore!!

I was having some serious slowdowns with my computer. I did multiple RAM and HD hardware tests, everything seemed to be working fine. I had recently deleted a bunch of files in order to free up some HD space, so I thought that may be the culprit. So I did a Time Machine backup and restored the Powerbook to it's original 10.3 software. All was fine. Then I upgraded back to 10.5 and all was fine. Then I did a Time Machine full system restore overnight and got the message "Your restore was successful, you must now restart your computer" (or something to that effect). Now I get the start-up chime and startup screen (apple logo) but then the computer shuts itself down. I have reset the PMU and PRAM to no effect. I have tried booting up in safe made, also no dice. I have tried starting it up with the time machine HD attached - doesn't help. I guess I'll need to hit the genius bar but wanted to ask the friendly discussion forum folks first. thanks in advance.

    Hi coldengray
Did you try to start from your System-CD? Hold down C-key during startup, start DiskUtility from the menu and verify/repair disk and permissions there.
If the CD is not available you can also connect your TimeMachine-Disk, select it as startup volume in System Preferences/StartupDisk, restart and then run DiskUtility from folder Applications/Utilities
    Good luck P

I cannot update either as anything up to 9.1.1 tells me I don't need it yet 9.1.2 tells me I need an eligable Logic Pro Version was not found in applications.
All of my files are stored in a separate hard drive with only the actual app having been on my Macbook. Should I just reinstall?

    Hi
To run Mouitain Lion you need to update Logic.
For the updaters to work the Logic application must be:
    a) Within the Applications folder, and not in any sub-folder
    b) Named "Logic Pro" with no extra numbers or spaces

    Yes.
And will it restore if the hd isn't even there? Like what if it got stolen or destroyed.
    Also yes.
Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How to restore a Time machine backup and get a recovery partition?

    Hi,
    I'm quite confused!
I restored from a Time Machine backup and then setup boot camp (and removed that partition a while back) and now I don't have a recovery partition. (Can't enable File Vault and
    bash-3.2# diskutil list /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD

       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            87.4 GB    disk0s2
My new MacBook Pro didn't come with any CDs.
Apparently I need the recovery partition to reinstall Lion from the internet.
"Recovery HD offers on-disk recovery tools, allows you to restore from Time Machine backups, reinstall OS X Lion over the Internet..."
The recommended solution from Apple seems to be reinstall with your OSX 10.6 CD (which I don't have) and then upgrade to Lion (which seems like a PITA).
    Info from : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
What process should I follow to restore my recovery partition and apply the current state of the machine from a backup?
(the process should not involve anything I don't have, like USB memory sticks, Lion CDs, etc....)
Supplementary questions which are only relevant if the answer is "you can't" (which would seem to be a major bug!) :
Or is there a clever method to install a recovery partition onto an existing disk (which clearly has space for it)? I have searched for it but all the results I found have either not mentioned that it works without reinstalling but look like it's needed, or do say "reinstall".
If I install Lion to an external disk, can I boot from that and use the recovery disk assistant tool to restore the partition to my internal disk? (Which I assume I'll need to do to get FileVault to work) ?
    Thanks,
    Max

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

  • I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.

  • Time machine will not restore a file due to lacking permissions

Why is time machine saying that it cannot restore a file due to access persmissions when all I'm trying to do is restore a single file for my one and only user on the same computer that created the backup? Shouldn't that just work?
Does anyone know the reason for it or better yet, a solution to the problem?
    Thanks
    Daniel Martinsson

Do you have read & write access to that file now?
You should be aware that there's a good chance that some of your backups of that image file are corrupt. It's a large file that's constantly changing when in use, so the copies made during that time may be in an inconsistent state. You'll want to restore from a snapshot that was made when the VM was shut down. Ideally, you should exclude that file from Time Machine backups, and instead back up the contents from within the guest OS. A virtual disk image will fill up your TM backup destination quickly.

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

  • HT201250 I backed up my iMac with a "WD My Passport" using the Time Machine option and tried to restore my iMac but it only saved my applications none of my documents, photos nothing else! What happened?

I backed up my iMac with a "WD My Passport" using the Time Machine option and tried to restore my iMac but it only saved my applications none of my documents, photos nothing else! What happened?

There should be two sparse bundles on the TC, one for each Mac.  If you click the TC in a Finder sidebar, you should see something like this (in Column View):
If you see the sparse bundle for the iMac there, but not on the window where you do a full system restore (after starting from your Recovery HD or OSX Install disc), they may be corrupted (especially if your iMac was failing at the time of the last backup).
Try repairing those backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Then try the full restore again, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.  Note that if you suspect problems on the most recent backup, you might want to select an earlier one.
