Time Navigator SMS backups running very slowly.
I'm testing NCS Cluster volumes backups using Time Navigator.
Not sure if anyone else is using this solution.
You simply install the client then on your backup server you can create your client system adding a "Novell SMS Application"
You have to install as many clients as you have NSS volumes.
I used to bacjkup with SyncSort But was unhappy with Support Services.
My problem is that when I backup the root file system without smdr, things are working fine.
When I backup NSS volumes the throughput is terrible around 10Go/hour.
I change tsafs.conf with the following settings
cluster=enable
cachememorythreshold=10
readaheadthrottle=2
# readbuffersize=65536
readbuffersize=131072
readthreadallocation=100
#readthreadsperjob=4
readthreadsperjob=8
#tsamode=Linux
tsamode=NetWare
#cachingmode=ensable
cachingmode=disable
The smdrd.conf is fairly standard
hosts: enable
autoload: tsafs --EnableGW
autoload: tsands
priority: slp, hosts
uds: enable
legacyconnections: enable
dataencryption: optional
slprefreshtime: 65535
You can use tsatest.nlm to determine whether the slowness is within the storage/SMS system, or external (ie the backup app).

Because I want to acquire the similar data for multiple times and then take an average to increase SNR, I add a while loop to the vi "niScope EX Multi-Device Configured Acquisition (TClk)". It works but it runs very slowly (about 1 sec for each iteration). I think I had put the while loop at a wrong position, which makes the vi run from the very beginning in each iteration. So I really want to know where should I put the while loop to improve the speed? I have attached all the vi and subvi.
Thanks very much.

avgWfm.vi 15 KBDear Zainykhas,
Thank you for posting this to the discussion forums and for uploading some sample code. I took a lok at the issue you have been having, and it is unclear to me as to why you have placed two for loops around the original while loop. My understanding is that you want to use the original Sample.vi and want to execute this N times where N is the Max Freq divided by Interval so that you can scan for a range of frequencies.
Why not just put Sample.vi around one for loop and use the increment counter scaled by the interval to count up towards Max Freq and insert the desired Frequency into the cluster using Bundle By Name?
Kind Regards,

Mac is running very slowly.
Hi Apple Community,
My mac has been running very slowly, and there has been several other problems as well. I have a early 2009 iMac, running OS X 10.9.5. First of all, I have recently moved all of my photos and music to an external hard drive to clear up the internal hard drive, and Time Machine is also backing up to an external hard drive, and the internal hard drive is now about 60% free. I thought that would be able to get my Mac to run quicker, but it is still has slow as it was before. I have read recent community posts on what to do about this, one suggested downloading Etresoft to get a report on the condition of my mac. I ran Etresoft (I honestly don't know what to make of anything in the report), and the report is here:
Problem description:
Mac runs very slowly, applications will take longer than usual to open. Internal hard drive is about 60% full, and 3 external hard drives are used to hold photos, music, and backups.

So if someone could please explain what this means, or suggest some other ways to find out what is wrong with my Mac, it would be extremely helpful.
Thanks
MorganYou need to uninstall all Norton Antivirus softwarwe/ utilities.
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us
Also, uninstall all Seagate hard drive software.
In addition, you need to install more RAM into your iMac.
Your year and model IMac can take a max. total of 8 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend that you purchase and install the maximum amount of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com). -
My MacBook Pro is running very slowly! Please help!
Hi all, as of late last year my MacBook Pro started running very slowly. As I'm a novice when it comes to computers I thought I'd turn to the interweb for solutions. I've tried a couple of basic things but don't seem to be getting anywhere.I ran the EtreCheck program as it seemed to help others. Would love some help interpreting this...

Thanks in advance! MikePlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Yosemite running very slowly on new MacBook Pro
I just bought a new 13" MacBook Pro (not Retina) last month. When I set it up I copied the data and apps from my 2006 MacBook running Snow Leopard. When I try to open apps such as Safari or jEdit or Adobe Reader or NeoOffice it seems to wait forever (or at least 30 seconds) to open them. I thought this would be faster than Snow Leopard, but it's not!
Should I just back this all up with my SuperDuper and start over?
Here are my Etrecheck data:
Problem description:
Yosemite running very slowly.

One of the myths that circulate on this site is the myth that the current version of OS X always needs to more than 4 GB of memory to run well. The myth is based on nothing except the fact that some people keep repeating it. Apple is today selling new Macs with 4 GB of memory that can never be upgraded after they leave the factory. Those Macs come with Yosemite preinstalled, and it can never be downgraded to an older version. So if you were to believe the myth, you would also believe that Apple knows that it's selling products that are permanently crippled right out of the box, no matter how they're used. Read this discussion before you spend money on memory that you may not need.
Some users do need more than 4 GB of memory for full performance. They are running memory-intensive applications, such as photo or video editors, or they're running many programs concurrently, or they have more than one account logged in at the same time. Whether you're one of those users can be determined, in part, by observing the level of memory pressure in the Memory tab of the Activity Monitor window. If the memory pressure graph always stays in the green zone, then a shortage of memory is not causing the problem.
Even if memory pressure is high, that doesn't necessarily mean that adding more memory will help. If one or more processes has a memory leak—a kind of bug—then adding memory, no matter how much, won't help. It will merely delay the onset of the problem, perhaps only by a few minutes or less. That is very likely the case if you already have more than 4 GB. -
Macbook Pro has begun to run very slowly. Is there any way to fix this?
Yesterday my mac started to run very slowly to the extent that it takes far longer to open files, apps and even startup. There is no reason in particular I can think of for this happening - computer was used normally that day.
I have run diskutility and the HD seems to be fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.

If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -
MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite
Problem description:
MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.

Follow the developers instructions for each app and uninstall. Then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally and retest.
OS X does not need third party apps to run well, and WD's software is total garbage and should be ignored. Their external HD's are pretty poor too, the enclosures WD uses tend to create a lot of issues with OS X. I would recommend buying higher quality EHDs, something like OWC Mercury Elite Pro series. -

Feb 15, 2015, 06:03:15 AM Self test - passed1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.8 or earlier.
3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
if it's shown (it may not be.)
4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center. -
After upgrading to OS X Lion Aperture 3.1.3 runs very slowly and crashes
After upgrading to OS X Lion Aperture 3.1.3 runs very slowly and crashes regularly when editing and/or exporting images. Prior to the upgrade these problems did not exist - has anyone else encountered this behavior and found a resolution?
My iMac has 2GB of RAM (max RAM is 3GB according to the machine specs) and uses a 2TB external drive for the Aperture library and Time machine backups. Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately after doing the Repair Permissions and rebuilding the Aperture Library the performance has not improved.
I cleared out the cache(s) by removing all of the files in the following folders and restarting:
Hard Drive/Library/Caches
Hard Drive/System/Library/Caches
Hard Drive/Users/(Your user)/Library/Caches
which seems to have helped a little bit. I did notice that in my Users folder there are 111 items:
username
username 1 (then folders with the same name up to 109)
Shared
could the extra username folders be causing the performance issue? In each folder is a Library folder, in the Library folder is a Preferences folder and in the Preferences folder is a com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist file and sometimes a com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file.
Only the username 1's Library folder has the standard Caches, Fonts, Logs & Preferences folders.
Is it safe to remove the username 2 - 109 folders? If so is the creation of these folders something I can turn off? -
My Mac Air is running very slowly
My Mac Air has started running very slowly. It is running Yosemite 10.10.2
Hello All,
Same frustrating problem here with my MBA. It's running slow, fans are running at full throttle from boot to power down, the apparently notorious known kernel_task process using between 200-400% CPU resources and some 450MB memory.
I have been reading hundreds of good support community threads, tried all reasonable advises such as resetting SCM, PRAM, upgrading from Maverick to Yosemite 10.3.3, endless chats with Apple support (nice peoples, but no help). I am getting desperate and close to deaf listing to the fans in my MBA.
Have seen several good supportive posts from Etresoft in various communities and now here again. Took the opportunity to download linked error check software and have inserted result below. I do however not expect this will really help in finding a solution, but you never know.
ANY advise and feedback appreciated (y)
Cheers,
Torben

My macbook pro (13inch mid 20101) is running very slowly since I upgraded to Yosemite. How can I cure this or how can I remove Yosemite?
OS X 10.10.1
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo
4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB
Opening apps or web pages is incredibly slow and extremely frustrating.Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
