Timecode error

I'm new to FCP and just don't understand what's happening when I try to capture clips. (I use an external JVC DV-VHS player to play the mini DV tape.)
I pop in the tape, view and mark the in and out points, then try and capture the clip. I get an error message that says something about the timecode. (Sorry, should have copied the error message.) However, when I look at the display on my DV player, during the capture procedure, it always goes back beyond where I set the in point and then gives me the timecode error.
What am I doing wrong ?
Thanks for any help.

theres this thing called preroll. you need the "deck to be rooling for 5 seconds before the capture for everything to be locked up and for 5 seconds after the out point. these can be adjusted in device settings but going below 3 seconds can cause problems. when shooting roll for 5 seconds before you really get something and when the directors says cut count 5 mississippi s before you go out of record.

  • Timecode error in batch capture

I've searched this problem but still haven't found an answer. When I batch capture, I get a "Timecode error" and on about half the clips I logged I have to cancel out of the capture. some work, some don't. It's not a problem with the pre-roll at the beginning of the tape; I left plenty of room when I set the in/out, and the first clip is now captured anyway so it can't be the start of the tape. But every time I try to capture the rest of the clips, I get this error with some if not most of them. I've changed the setting to NDF and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm only capturing in the middle of the tape now, so the beginning and end have lots of space. Please someone tell me how to stop this! I just upgraded to Pro and it's my first attempt at batch capture, so I'm pretty disappointed that it's such a waste of time.
    Thanks, smart people!

Great, now you made Studio go and have some fun on the weekend.
X is right eliminate things one at a time.
You didn't let us know what drive you are capturing to.
If capturing from the camera doesn't work, it may be that you are experiencing the "multiple FW devices on one FW bus issue" in which case you might try looping the camera or deck through the drive, works for some, but more likely you will need to install another FW bus via the card slot on the laptop.
By the way, this really doesn't sound like a drop/non drop issue, but look at the timecode display of the footage on tape. If the last 2 numbers are preceded by a semicolon,,, it's drop frame.
Now, I believe someone mentioned the US Open!

  • Batch Capture : Timecode Error?

So I am attempting to capture my first video onto FCP from my Canon XL. I have about 5 minutes of video and I have logged the info for each clip. They are all in my "Bin 1" and it is set as a "logging bin." The first logged clip that i want it to capture i have marked the "In Point" at 00:00:00;00 and the "Out Point" at around 00:01:09;24. The rest of my 11 clips just go in order (i.e. 2nd clip: In = 00:01:09;25 etc...). After doing all of this I click on "Batch" under the "Capture" option, a big black screen pops up over my FCP with the capture info underneath the black screen in a gray strip. My camera then rewinds to the beginning and STOPS. I then have to sit and wait for anythin to happen, my camera still saying "STOP," and then a message pops up reading the following:
Batch Capture: Timecode Error: Unable to locate the specified timecode. You may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for a pre/post roll operation.
I have no idea what this means and I am beginning to get impatient with capturing my video. In the Log and Capture window, the tab that says Logging, i did not mess with the "Markers." I don't know if this matters.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated so that I can start editing my project with this wonderful software otherwise.
    God bless,

In standard trim, FCP needs at least 5 seconds preroll before capturing. The preroll is so the tape can get up to speed, the heads read timecode accurately and so on. You have discovered what happens when you give it no oppertunity to sort itself out.
The simple answer for your current situation is to set your first in point 10 seconds after the start of the time code. Be sure to make sure your last clip's OUT point is 10 seconds or more before the end of time code or you can have problems at that end of the capture as well.
The long term answer is next time let the camera run for a minute or two before you start recording anything you will want to keep. The same is true for the end of the tape - let it run for another half minute or so.

  • Timecode error while importing

    Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to Final Cut Pro, so please take it easy on me. I'm getting a "waiting for timecode" error when trying to import video. Here's what I'm using and trying to do.
    Final Cut Pro 7.0.1
    Sony Handycam DCR-HC30
    Video Source DVR/VCR
Ok, I have a program that I have recorded and have the rights to saved on my DVR. I have an S-video and audio cable hooked up to my camera, which is setup to output the video to my mac via firewire. Everything is connected correctly and the signal shows up in the preview window perfectly.
When I go to File>Log and Capture then click "Capture Now". I get the waiting for timecode error. Is there any way around this?
I opened iMovie and hit import and it started recording right away with no problem.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I am sorry that you are having that problem. From what I have been reading in other discussion boards it appears that the same problem persists when other devices are connected(for instance, some that use the firewire ports).
Here is a link from a persona that had a similar problem to yours,

  • FCP 6 Export Timecode Errors?

Going on two days trying to edit a "simple" 60 second video and I've reached the saturation point.
I've searched the forum, but was unable to come across anything related to what I'm seeing. Hopefully, someone will have encountered it before.
I'm starting with a screen-capture movie that I made with iShowU. I've tried capturing in "Apple Intermediate Codec" and "HDV720p" (I also tried "Apple Animation," but that gave me a "General Error" when I tried bringing it into FCP).
I bring the captured movie into FCP and start cutting it up (the project settings are "Apple Intermediate 720p") into a sequence.
Everything plays fine in the timeline, all the edits are exactly where they should be.
However, when I export as a QuickTime, I get a file that almost completely ignores my edit in/out points. Sometimes (I've tried about a hundred [no exaggeration] different approaches with no luck) the edits start out fine, then become wrong, sometimes they're wrong from the first cut.
It's like the timecode is drifting, somehow, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to get around it.
It's getting so I can almost notice when it's going to happen in the viewer. I'll set an in/out point and be unable to narrow it down to exactly where I want it to be. When I drag the clip into the timeline, I can then adjust it correctly, but, of course, once I export, it ends up being wrong anyway.
HELP!! This is driving me nuts. I've tried reconnecting media, recompressing, different codecs (the "HDV720 works the best, getting mostly through the project before messing up")...everything I can think of, but I still can't get it to work.
Surely I'm just being a thickheaded and missing something obvious.

Thanks for bringing this up Keith...I did a capture this morning with iShowU...edited a bunch, and ran into the same error. MADDENING.
Thank you Jerry for knowing the answer.
See..."search is your friend." I searched the forum for my question and BOOM, there it was.

  • Timecode error when capturing with USB in Premiere Elements 7

When trying to capture video from my DV I get an error "\src\Timecode.cpp-955" and PE7 crashes.
I upgraded from PE2 to PE7, and I just checked that it still works in the old version.
I'm using a USB cable, so the Device Control is set to USB Video Class and split scenes are set to content. The camera is a Panasonic NV-GS300 and I'm on Win XP Pro with SP3, Celeron 2.8 Ghz, 2GB RAM.
    Any ideas?
Will a firewire solve my problem?

I would not recommend capturing over USB in Premiere Elements -- even though it supposedly works with USB Video Standard 1. The results are too inconsistent and problems, at least in my experience, are common. It's really a pretty obsolete video capture method.
Try it with FireWire and you'll likely see the problem go away.
But it still might not hurt to make sure everything is updated on your computer -- that you're using XP SP3 and that you have the latest Quicktime and firmware for your graphics card.

    Thanks Bill
I will take the usb cable that came with the camera to the computer people who built my desktop to make sure i get the correct cable
My wife took the cable and PE11 instructions (1 page !) to local electrical shop (Harvey Normans) and asked for a firewire cable
The pimply faced young "salesperson" laughed at the thought somebody would be requesting OLD technology ! as they don't sell firewire cables
and Dick Smiths You Beaut electrical specialst shop had 1 cable that wasn't the right one (it was the same pin on both ends)
I am frustrated that the instructions and help page all say that I can connect the DV mini tape camcorder by the usb 2.0 cable but I can't
I've been playing with the usb connection today and did manage to get a picture on to the screen but can't do anything with it !
Was reading reviews on new camcorders and video editing software, one suggestion was to turn camera on AFTER starting PE11 (not before as in instructions)
    Got to capture screen
Capturing source shows....... camera and ! in yellow triangle
message ...... No DV camera detected
    switch camera on
    debug message appears (as before)
capture source changes..... to picture of tape
preview screen message changes to.....  your camera setting is different  to your project setting (click here to learn more) ( I clicked here, but didn't learn anything )
click on black area of preview screen and debug message goes off screen (minimises)
    close message on preview screen
    Capture Button is red
click on capture button and nothing happens
if i play tape in camera at this stage it also plays in preview screen
I don't understand computers at all but it seems the PE11 regognizes that a camera is attached and the camcorder can send the picture via usb but PE11 is having a problem finding it ???
I hope the firewire cable helps ( I don't really want to spend money on a useless cable to add to the collection)

  • Batch Capture Error: Timecode Error: End of Tape Reached

I have been having issues doing batch capture with my JVC VS30U. I logged all my clips on the fly and did the entire tape, so the OUT point of one clip is the same as the IN point of the next clip. When I attempt to batch capture it gives this error between every clip.
I have to hit retry, sometimes more than once, in order for the deck to properly cue and FCP to start the digitize. I don't know if this is a weird pre-roll issue, or something else, but it completely defeats the purpose of a batch if I have to sit here and hit retry after each clip.
There are no TC breaks, and obviously its not really the end of the tape. I've read where people have similar problems, but didn't find a solution. Have already trashed prefs, but to no avail. Using FCP 5.0.4 with OS 10.4.3 and said JVC deck via firewire.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I don't know the deck but a simple test would be to move a couple of i/o points so they are not adjacent. Or test with a single, longer clip and break it up into subclips.
Tell us what you've tried so we don't waster your time and ours with fruitless suggestions.
Errors displayed by FCP are usually irrelevant and rarely helpful.

  • Digitizing Trouble-timecode errors/freezing/inability to take long clip

Recorded on minidv (ntsc) at 24p widescreen (anapomorphic). Am trying to digitize the footage in a project set up as NTSC DV with NTSC anamorphic capture settings. I understand that FCP will automatically convert the footage to 29.97. I have over 100Gigs of space available on an external Lacie. Deck is attached with 400 firewire.
When I try to capture, FCP won't allow any clip longer than a few minutes (I want to capture entire tape). Either the picture freezes during capture and I press escape to hold onto that footage and start again OR audio and video begin to loose sync OR I get a message that says there were timecode breaks and the footage must be recaptured OR I get a message of dropped frames. Have turned off "abort capture" on dropped frames.
I have trashed settings several times. Have shut down and restarted.
Often get the spinning ball/sluggish behavior when trying to remotely control the deck. Often get "preview unavailable" when trying to capture.
    What can I do?
    Thanks,
    Katy

    Two questions:
    1) What version of QuickTime are you running?
    2) Do you have the Lacie drive connected via Firewire 800? Sometimes mixing 400 and 800 on the same bus can cause problems, particularly with Lacie drives. Sometimes putting two devices on the same bus (regardless of speed) can cause problems. An Apple support has the following to say about it:
Certain DV camcorders cannot be connected to a computer while a FireWire disk drive is connected simultaneously. In many cases, you can improve performance by installing a separate FireWire PCI card to connect your FireWire drive.

  • Merge Clips Timecode Errors

PP 2014 on iMac running 10.9.5 -- latest update of PP2014.
Synchronizing clips in the timeline, using double-system sound as fourth channel as it has translation track for foreign-langiage interview. Once synched, Merge Clip.
New Merged Clip is created. Time code does not match TC of video source shown in 'Overlays'. Two completely different TC readings on same clips, pointing to identical media. Even though Sequence and also original video are non-drop, Merged Clip insists on drop frame.
Reading in Bin window also incorrect in terms of TC.
Nothing here about the issue, though many forums online have discussions about the bug -- and it seems to be a major bug that has been unresolved for at least three releases.
Anyone here have experience with this problem?
    Thanks --

  • Help with Batch Capturing, Timecode Issues?

Hi Final Cut Pro Pro's. I've just come over from Avid.
I have a problem with capturing - I have a lot of tapes to capture and there is no way I will make deadline doing it by individual capture - I need to batch capture. My tape shows no timecode breaks and I have already spent hours logging all the various clips. It shows it has registered all of the media start/end timecodes, but when I click on batch capture, it says
BATCH CAPTURE: TIMECODE ERROR: UNABLE TO LOCATE THE SPECIFIED TIMECODE. YOU MAY HAVE SPECIFIED A TIMECODE WITH INSUFFICIENT ROOM FOR A PRE/POST ROLL OPERATION.
I don't understand as there is clearly a functioning timecode? This is going to break my balls if I have to go through this individually, no time! Anyone? Any ideas?
    Thank you.

I'm capturing from the camera directly, a Sony DSR-250...
It turns out that yes, if you have marked the in/out point too close to the head or the tail of the tape, or even if you have marked it okay and are currently at the start/end of tape when pressing on batch capture it cannot send the command to the device. If you move forward or backward accordingly by five or six seconds it doesn't come up anymore.
Thanks for all the responses, I'm going to make deadline now. Apple forums are my hot hot S€X.

  • 24 - 30 timecode issues

Shot some footage with a Panasonic DVX 100b, with 24p advanced set. I do this all the time and it works just fine. but this footage has given me nothing but toruble- I keep getting odd cadence and timecode errors as I try to capture.
Finally captured it with a Sony DSR11 and AVID, and saved as a QT file. QuickTime shows it as 23.98. CinemaTools shows it as 23.98. But Final Cut 6.0.1 shows it as 29.97. It plays, and looks good, but the audio is out of sync with the video. And I cant reverse telecine it, because CinemaTools says its 23.98 already.
    Any thoughts?

My thought if you had the time...
Log and capture the tape with 29.97 DV normal settings. Don't capture over a camera start/stop.
Then use the TOOLS menu to remove advanced pulldown on the clips.
Sometimes depending on how you've shut down the camera or done a end of tape run the cadence can get broken and give you all types of fits.
Also -- is the footage running at a normal speed in FCP? If you drop it in a 23.98 sequence, does it need rendering?

  • Locating Break in Timecode

I've read similar posts on this subject but so far nothing has solved my problem. I am importing 8MM video via the Canopus ADVC110. The playback source is a Sony Handicam Video 8. Using FCE 4.0.1. Mac OS 10.5.5.
When importing video, the capture will stop and I get a message saying "locating break in timecode". It just hangs there until I finally have to press ESC. I've tried changing various settings but nothing's working. Any help?

DV Converter is the correct setting. You should not be getting the timecode error message now. There may be another problem. Make sure you have the switches on the converter box set correctly. Play the video. You should see it in the window. It's possible the analog video is too unstable and the converter box cannot handle it properly. Does the converter have a built-in timebase corrector? That's often necessary for old analog material that doesn't have a stable video signal.

  • XH A1 timecode problem

    Hi!
First of all log and capture doesnt work at all with FCP 5 and my XH A1, so I just use capture now. When I for example capture from a tape where I have left the camera going the whole duration, it still splits the tape into several different clips beause of timecode errors. I also loose about 10 secs for each new clip, so that timelapses often get ruined because of this. If I change the setting to "warn after capture" it just aborts the capture when there is a timecode error, instead of just warning me afterwards.. Anybody know what to do? Thanks so much!

If non-controllable device does not work, you will need to re-capture the first 10 to 15 seconds of each clip lost in your earlier captures... then its a simple matter of finding the appropriate frame for an edit of the clips when you use them.
You've only lost a little time.

  • Finla Cut Pro Capture error

I am trying to capture a miniDV tape, nearly 60min,(using Sony DSR-30 deck) I set in and out points and told FCP to caputre 'clip' It cued up the clip and appeared to be captuing for about 55 min, playing the footage back flawlessly, then when it was done it gave an error message saying there is a problem with the tape (not any kind of timecode error) and asks to record a different section of the tape??? I need the section I was tring to capture! No file appears in FCP or on the disk inthe scratch folder.
    FCP 5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Dual processor G5

Thanks for you suggestions, while they would most likly get the job done for this tape, I have alot of tapes to capture and I need FCP5 to capture full tapes.
here is the exact error message
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. To capture as much of your footage as possible, please log and capture a clip that ends before this segment, and another one that starts right after it.
I thought it may have been a problem with drop-frame or non-drop-frame, but I have confirmed that the tape is Drop-Frame and FCP is set to capture drop-frame.
I am confident that my deck (DSR 30) and firewire are good because I have been heavily using them for months.
I did just upgrade from FCP 3 to FCP 5 and this is the first tape I have tried to capture. In FCP3 I captured the first 8 or so tapes no problem. I wonder if this upgrade could be the source of my problem?
I can capture 5 min clips with set In's and Out's or Via capture Now with no problems.
In looking for other occurences of my problem I noticed most people who had the same error as I got said thier captures were stopped within 5 min of starting, whereas mine plays the whole 55 min before the error pops up and I have not captured anything.
I know there are ways around this, but as I said it is important that I get FCP to capture 'clip' properly because I have a lot of tapes from the same source that all need to be captured.
    Thanks for any suggestions
