Timelapse: HQ slo-mos / speed-ups

This is (most directly) in reference to a "problem" slomo clip that Jim Simon was dealing with when doing 60i->24p conversions. This workflow and the required tools are nearly identical, so please read
this thread if you have no idea what I'm talking about here. Also go
here if you have don't know what AviSynth is or how it works.
I'm posting a solution I created for creating speed-adjusted 50i or 60i clips for normal SD editing. I figured others could benefit from this also, independent of doing NTSC Film conversions.
I was never quite satisfied with the quality of slow motion or speeded up motion in PPro or AfterEffects. I'm unable to really control the frame blending (well, I can in After Effects but it is real pain.)
The other route to go is with "Pixel Motion" instead of frame blending. I'll admit, it does get nice results (sometimes) but it is extremely slow.
The time effects in these programs fail horribly on interlaced material for the simple fact that neither has a capable built-in deinterlacer. I also remember reading a complaint from a user on this forum about the way Premiere interlaces the output in "timelapse" sequences.
In any case, one should be able to do a "near-perfect" 50% speed progressive output from an interlaced clip. This can't be done with Premiere alone, for want of said HQ deinterlacer.
I have written a function for AviSynth specifically for the purpose of making speed alterations to interlaced clips. It has both "traditional" blending and motion-compensated modes -- and can combine both.
With my function, you can get interlaced from progressive and vice-versa. There is a choice of several deinterlacing engines, varying in quality vs. speed. It works identically with both PAL and NTSC sources and always renders to the same format/framerate of the source, but with more or less frames.
Download it
here
1.) Requires AviSynth 2.5.7.
2.) The contents of the .zip go in the AviSynth plugins folder.
3.) Script examples are included in the timelapse.txt file.
4.) You can open your script with Virtual Dub and save as an .AVI or use the Premiere AviSynth Import filter.

@Craig IAFF:
Is this more what you're looking for for general purpose slowmo / speedups? Be sure to see the timelapse.txt file for more information and examples.

  • Can MOS speed up the download of R12 language patches?

    Hi
We are going from 12.0.4 to 12.1.3 and we have American + 6 foreign languages. Right now I go and download each patch 7 times manually, once for each language. Is there a way to have MOS "remember" your preferred languages and then pull those up automatically so you can download them all at once, together?
Also - can someone clarify which patches I expect to come in various languages and which I should NOT expect to come in various languages (eg. TXK, AD patches)?
    Thanks, Marvin.

  • Playback is choppy / slow while speeding up clip anything above 200%

Coming from using Final Cut Pro X for a while, ive just bought myself a new laptop.
    Basic Specs are:
    Intel i7 3840QM 2.8ghz with 3.8ghz turbo
    32GB Ram 1600mhz
    1TB SATA 7200rpm in Raid 0
    2GB GeForce GTX680M
Long story short, ive been a long time PC fan my whole life although using the mac only for video editing and being a basic macbook pro 13" with final cut pro x seems to outperform my newly acquired PC laptop.
I bought this laptop with the intentions to move my video editing platform back to a PC state and with the new Premiere cs6.
everything is smooth and all that but the same issue i remembered about premiere back when i wanted to try it out in cs3 time. the playback for previewing video is slow and choppy.
i have to always "render" my video just to preview it smoothly which is very time consuming. I always thought because back in the day my laptop wasnt as good as my new one now so that was the issue and moved over to my mac which was great for video editing only.
but that mac has basic specs compared to my new laptop and still the preview is flawless and smooth with LIVE video previewing. i mean i can do speed duration changes of 10% slow down all the way to 1000% speed ups and watch my video that same instant after.
but with premiere if i do anything speed changes of more then 200% original frame time it plays fine for 2 seconds at that accelerated speed then gets choppy and slow.
I even changed the playback resolution to 1/4 quality and i get the same issue.
i wouldnt mind waiting for the render so i can see that smooth playback and determine whether i like it or not except when rendering my clips from my gopro which is recording at 60fps 1080 it takes over 15 minutes.
This has always seemed to be an issue with premiere for me and am wondering if there is something i am missing here..
anyone point me to the right direction?
im not hating on PC or adobe at all, i love these two platforms in every other way but when it comes to this editing all i hear is good things about them but when i go to use them for myself its extremely frustrating.
P.S. yes i have set my GPU to use the mercury GPU accelerated mode which did minimal difference with playback smoothness.

I was having this issue last night while going through a bunch of 1080p 60fps footage I took yesterday with my Hero3 Black. I wasn't doing any speeding up or down, just previewing footage to cut sections out. It would play back fine for 6 seconds, then get choppy which got worse the longer I let it play. It played fine for 6 seconds after each pause and play.
I used Cineform as mentioned to convert the files which are now huge but play back without trouble. A 13 minute 2.8GB file became 25GB.
Hopefully this issue gets fixed so I don't have to go through all that.

  • Speeding up clips: fine in FCP, wrong in export

Hey all, I have a problem with FCP HD. I captured some shots at 720 24p DVCPRO HD off the Panasonic HDV. The shots are about 12 minutes long without an edit. Well, an actor stalled on a line so I made a few edits and sped up parts of the shot to a modest 125% or so. I didn't want the speed up to be very noticeable.
I managed to shave off 3 seconds or so, which was a good thing. It looks fine in FCP 5. However, when I export to either uncompressed footage or H.264 the speed ups are just jitters. Nothing gets out of sync, the footage just jitters in a strange way. I can't figure out why! It totally seems like a bug. Any help would be appreciated. I would hate to compromise the integrity of the movie just becuase of some software bug.

Just in case anybody is watching this thread, I found a solution... but not an ideal one.
Maxplanar's suggestion actually ended up not working. I still got the studdering. I then deleted all the render files... and tried to make sure there wasn't anything cached anywhere that the software might be calling on that made the clip speed incorrect. Still nothing worked.
    The solution? Ugly.
I changed the clips that were supposed to be running at 100% to 101%. Works without studdering.
    what?
Wish I knew what the problem was... but at least I have a solution.
So the time line might look something like this:
    |------|---|---|---|---|---|--------|
    100% 120 101 130 101 123 100%
Where the clips that are not == 100 or 101% are the clips that I just wanted to speed up a bit. The ones that are at 101% I had to do just so the software would export the timeline correctly.

  • How to set up and use multiple Ext HD compatible with Windows w/o emulating

I am in deep doodle and confused, sit down and get a cup of coffee cuz is going to be loooooong.
I need some suggestions for my present situation. I have posted a similar question but I only got partial answer and I need to complete this task.
I migrated to my Mac from Windows, and I still have a Windows XP laptop. At first, I formatted my Ext HD as FAT 32 but I noticed that it was too slow. I was suggested to reformat the drives back to Journal. However, recently I had to replace my internal HD and backed up all my data to several Ext. HD. Oh brother what a mistake, while my Mac was at Apple I couldn't get access to my files using my Windows XP laptop because all drives were formatted as Journal (only for Mac).
At the moment, I have the following:
1- Seagate (350 GB orig)- complete back up images 110 GB avail
    2- Maxtor ( 500 GB orig) - " " second copy 330 GB avail
3- Old int w/ casing(150 GB orig) 3rd copy 78 GB avail - is working but not sure if it will last, I had this DR for a long time. All 3 DRs formatted as Journal
4- Western Dig 1TB (new FW) 1TB avail
I realized that at the rate that I am shooting I would be running out of space on the current Drives. So I bought 1TB Ext HD FW, but I am in great need from others with more experience than me in setting up a strategy to back up and using my Ext HD. I only use the Int. HD DR 250 GB for Apps only, anything else I use exclusively my Ext HD.
So I would like to know which drive should I use as my primary one, and how I should set up the other subsequent drives as shown above. Do you think that I should reformat all the drives back to FAT 32, (what a task)? I'm also aware the 4 GB limitations. Or should I just format to FAT 32 the 1 TB, and can I partition the this drive and Format each partition with different format,ie. a couple NTFS and one FAT32.
    Thanks in advance to all

You can also share a printer between the Mac/PC as well as files and mounted Volumes, see the Tiger articles here
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/
You may want to use Bonjour for Windows on your PC
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/
Then there are VNC clients for Mac/PC that also allow you to actually control the other machine, if they aren't in the same room and you just need to check something quick that can be handy, it's kind of slow though for regular use.
The main benefit of partitioning is being able to have different versions of bootable OS on them. You can try out Leopard on a new partition, while keeping your Tiger partition intact, you can have a XP/Vista partition for parallels or BootCamp, etc... other than that drives are pretty much fast enough, having smaller partitions probably won't realize any significant speed ups over searching the whole large drive.

  • Video exposure not working in all 3 video modes new iphone 6 Plus ios 8.1

Bug 1.  In video mode, exposure does not automatically brighten in darkly lit areas - then when you touch the screen to focus and try and use the sun slider for upping or lowering the exposure, you have to swipe it many, many times to go a short distance, then IT ONLY WORKS TO DARKEN THE EXPOSURE, IT DOES NOT LIGHTEN IT IN ALL 3 VIDEO MODES. It works fine in Photo mode.  Go to this video at :54 to see it working properly:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tehcNa3ecs4#t=75
Bug 2:  Slo-Motion videos will play back on computers in slow motion ONLY if the base frame rate is set to 60 fps and the Slo-mo speed is set to 240fps.  With any other settings the computer (both win and mac) play the video back at full speed.
Especially with bug 1, can any of you check your phone to see if sliding your finger up will brighten the image while in any of the 3 video modes?

    Hi,
I'm having also having game sound issues the game music and sounds just go completely quiet in iOS 8.1. Sometimes it'll just be completely quiet and others I'll have game music and sounds and partway through the game I'll lose audio. It's not the side lock/mute button either which I checked.
It's happening in two different games: Shadowgun:Deadzone and Modern Combat 5.
I have that side button above the volume set to toggle mute and I tried changing it to lock rotation instead to see if that made a difference which it did not. I have to kill the game and relaunch it to get the game audio working again.

  • Timelime playback problems in CS4

After several months editing on a CS4 project with three sequences, at first randomly, and now everytime Iopen the project file and hit playback it takes several seconds for either clips in the source monitor or sequences on the timeline to playback. I have followed several of the standard troubleshooting ideas: cleaning the media cache, saving the project file into a new one, disabling start up and services, The project is pretty straightforward. Fourteen minutes, straight cuts and few dissloves, no GPU effects, a few SLO MOS and some color correction. As a test recently started a new project with eight or ten clips where the system worked perfectly but when opened the next day had the same delayed start problem. As usual, working on a deadline and would appreciate any suggestions.

  • MIDI Drums not syncing with tempo track automation

I created some tempo changes, basically subtle speed-ups etc, worked fine, recorded guitars and bass, made a rough mix, all sounded great.
Now I go back to do more recording and editing, and the MIDI drums won't speed up with the automation, thus putting it out of sync with the audio tracks that have been recorded to it. I've restarted etc, no luck. Anyone have any ideas what could have happened?

Maybe your Drum Machine doesn't accept Logic as it's MIDI master in terms of sync. There can only be one MIDI clock master. By default, it's Logic. Look if you Drum machine is set to slave!
But i must admit i never worked the chapter through in the Manual, since i didn't need it before. So i recommend looking there as well.

  • Bridge mode for airport extreme or dsl modem? Recomendations?

I'm upgrading to a 'blisteringly fast' 12 Mbps with my local DSL ISP (no cable in my area), and I'm thinking of changing out my
My current, antiquated setup is with a Speedstream 5200 Modem/Router (8 Mbps max) with a Linksys E1200 802.11n router. We have an Apple TV with HDMI into a stout Panasonic plasma, 2 Macs, 3 iPads (2xgen4 + mini), 3 5C iPhones and an old Dell Winbox (XP vintage that I will toss out) that access this configuration in a good-sized house (2 stories, ~4000 sq.ft.).
The Linksys 'n' speed router is somewhat adequate, but we want to do movie/video/music streaming to the AppleTV and we want to buy a new Mac (probably a Mac-mini to replace the Winbox). I also want to future-proof this setup for a few years, given the pain it usually is to do a wholesale swap-out like what I'm contemplating. I want to swap-out this pairing with:
a DSL modem/router to either a Netgear DM111PSP-100NAS (ADSL2+) or an older, but robust Actiontec GT-701D (or the newer -NF).
an Airport Extreme (802.11ac) to manage my Apple menagerie for fast streaming, and also to hang a poor man's network file storage off the USB port.
I'm asking for some recommendations from the community at-large so I can minimize the hassles when I do this swap-out.  Which of the two devices (the modem/router or the AE router) should I put in bridge mode? Any performance penalties one way or another, or hidden gotchas?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm back and wanted to put a coda on this thread.
First of all, many thanks to the recommendations by Tesserax and LaPastenague.  You helped allay my fears in converting over to the Time Capsule environment.
The home network is working just great.  Internal speed-ups all the way around.  TC is working great as both a file server AND a Time Machine site.  The Netgear DSL modem is the firewall and the DHCP server for my network.  As stated in earlier posts, it has superior firewall capabilities compared to the Time Capsule.  I configured the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode with my iPhone 5C, the configuration of which only took a couple of minutes.  The speed between the 802.11 ac devices, my TC and the new Mac Mini, are unbelievably fast--on the order of 150+ Mbps at a distance of 40 feet or so through several walls--beamforming really does appear to work as advertised.  That doesn't matter overall except for the Time Machine aspects, as my DSL line is a blisteringly fast 12 Mbps.
The only glitch I've had over the last 3 weeks was due to a short power outage, and the main problem was the networking with hard ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.  I had to reboot the Netgear modem, as it was in a funky state, while other devices, such as my new Mac Mini, were waiting for the modem to vend a DHCP address.  It turns out that the Apple TV had some persistence with its old DHCP-vended address, and the Mac Mini somehow received its IP address first--which conflicted with the Apple TV.  Now, I'm not sure why the wirelessly networked Mac Mini beat the Apple TV to receiving a DHCP vending first, but it did, and the address persistence of the Apple TV created a conflict on the Apple TV network connection.  Once I realized the problem, I shut down the Mac Mini and made sure all my other devices were off as well.  I then restarted the entire network, the Apple TV received its IP address first, and all was well again.  Granted, I could have disconnected the ethernet and allowed really fast wireless to the Apple TV, but it's only 4 feet away from the Time Capsule, so I might as well have the fastest pipe available for HD streaming to my large-format HD television.
The switchover was absolutely painless.  Both the modem and the Time Capsule took, all total, about 10 minutes to set up and configure.  Much easier than with Winboxes.  Other than the Apple TV IP conflict after the power outage, it's been a real delight.
I'm very happy I switched to this new network configuration.

I'm just trying to slow down a picture thats moving around the screen, but the design is kinda complex. I guess I just need to think about it.There's a technique in programming about making something time-based as opposed to frame based. Usually we start off making something frame base and end up getting fustrated when drops or speed ups in the fps cause drastic effects in the smoothness of the game/animation.
To combat this we make a program time based by storing a global variable, say "frameSpeed". We then program as though it were a constant 30 fps (or any other arbitrary number). The "frameSpeed" would then be +30 / actual fps+ . So if we were moving at 60 fps then "frameSpeed" would be .5.
This global variable is then used in all the calculations. So where as previously we may have had
    x += xSpeedwe now have
x += xSpeed * frameSpeedWhen you introduce more complex concepts like acceleration the math is a little harder. But if you can make your program time based, then it will be smooth across many frame rates. You could even forcefully manipulate "frameSpeed" to cause your whole program to speed up or slow down into a bullet-time effect.

  • Anyone using an SSD under Arch? Please post a quick benchmark

I'm considering an SSD for my Linux root and /home.  If you're using an SSD under Arch, can you please run a quick benchmark for me and post the results in this thread?  You can use hdparm to do a quick read test.  Here is an example using my HDD.
    # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads: 14500 MB in 2.00 seconds = 7258.88 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 368 MB in 3.01 seconds = 122.16 MB/sec
Beyond that, have you noticed any substantial speed ups over an HDD, like launching programs, booting the system, etc.

Perhaps use of IDE-MODE flash devices will provide best answers with the hdparm measure.  It does a sequential test which is hardly normal for operating systems.
Usual performance from ide mode flash devices is 45mb/sec but in practice may be a bit less in hdparm.  Two ide mode flash drives in raid0 give me less than 90 mb/s.  My use is for quick access storage, mostly read-only.  When first installed, 90 mb is possible but within a few weeks, it lessens to the mid 80"s even with read-only.
The performance over time lessens if the units are used as SSD and such is normal wear and tear.  Many articles cover the subject and the methods used to minimize the effects.
Much is going forward with SSD and expectation is that in a few years they will be in wide use.  This remains to be seen!
You may be aware of all so excuse my oops!

  • Quicktime video freezes/pauses/skips while audio continues at normal rate.

So here's my problem. I used a Canon Vixia to record some AVCHD footage of my band playing at a gig. I imported it into Final Cut Pro 7 using Log & Transfer. I edited the footage just fine (very simple cuts to remove unnecessary footage and add some title overlays).
However, upon being exported, whenever I opened the .mov in Quicktime, the video would pause, freeze, or skip while the audio continued. Then the video would move extremely quickly to catch up to the audio. It has done this exported as ProRes 422 (LT), Apple Intermediate Codec, and H.264 (I used Compressor to get it into H.264). The only program to play without any skipping/speeding up was VLC, and there was some heavy pixelization/grey screens going on.
Upon a whim, I uploaded one of the clips to Facebook. It still played the skips for me, but I had friends tell me that it played perfectly for them. I used a different computer, and sure enough, not a skip in sight. Going back to my computer, it still played the skips/speed-ups. They are present in Facebook, YouTube, Quicktime (both 7 and X), MPEG Streamclip, and during preview by pressing spacebar with the file selected.
I'm running this on a 15" Macbook Pro (Early 2011 model) with Snow Leopard (10.6.8), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, and 4 GB of RAM.

  • 1080P 23.98fps to 1080i 29.97fps

I have a project that was shot 4k 23.98fps edited in 1080p 23.98fps. The client needs the final output in 1080i 59.94 quicktime. I take it that 59.94 is the equal to 29.97. Please let me know if I am wrong about that. My main question is, what is the process to take the 1080 23.98 and reconform to 1080 59.94 Quicktime for output. Is this as simple as sending to compressor with a 59.94 frame rate, or is there something more involved.
Thanks in advance for a speedy response to all the people with knowledge.

Not sure I'd use Compressor. It doesn't have the ability to actually insert pulldown (which is what you're want to do) and instead attempts to create new frames. That's great for slo-mos but not for this. Of course, if that's the only tool you have, hey, you gotta work with it.
If you have access to a recent version of After Effects, it should do a much better job at introducing 3:2 pulldown so that your footage runs at 29.97.
Not entirely sure about the conversion to 59.94 though (as I've never had to go that route myself with a digital file), hopefully this post will serve to bump this thread so you can get specific advice for that.

  • Slowing down a section of a song

How do I take a piece, say, 8-12 measures of a song and slow it down to zero, like the power being cut on a record player?

You can use Speed Fades. Just create  regular fades, then you go to the inspector box. Fade Out itself is a pop-up menu. Click on it and select slow down.
Same applies to fade Ins. You can turn them into Speed ups.
