Tips for blue screen (BSOD) errors with Windows Vista and Intel Turbo Memory on X61/X61s

Important note: The symptoms and solutions described below address only a small subset of the possible causes for blue screen errors, aka BSOD.
This information can help address blue screen errors specifically
related to Turbo Memory, but may not solve errors related to other
issues. Please read through the instructions completely, make sure they
apply to your system, and after attempting the solutions please post
back with your feedback for the community.
Some users may experience random blue screen errors with ThinkPad
systems running Windows Vista with Intel Turbo Memory hardware. These
blue screens may occur during normal usage on the system or they may
occur when booting into Windows Vista. Blue screens related to the
Intel Turbo Memory hardware may reference a stop code of 8086 with
memory address locations of {0, 0, 0, 0}.
There are two main steps that you can take to help resolve blue screen issues related to Intel Turbo Memory.
Step 1: Update Intel Turbo Memory Driver
If the driver version is before version 1.0.1.1004-7.0.3.1001, please
update to this version.
To determine what version of the Intel Turbo Memory driver is installed:
1.    Click Start, then click Control Panel.
2.    Click System and Maintenance.
3.    Click System.
4.    Click Device Manager.
5.    Expand the Storage controllers category.
6.    Double-click Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip.
7.    Click the Driver tab. Then you will see the driver version (for example, 1.0.1.1004).
The new driver and installation instructions can be found here.
Note: The Intel Matrix Storage Driver is updated with this package.
Step 2: BIOS version
If your BIOS version is older than those listed below, please update to the version listed.
How to check your BIOS version:
Turn off the system.
Turn on the system.
While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
The
BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor
password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the
password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
Turn off the system.
System BIOS versions:
ThinkPad X61 or X61s - BIOS version 1.06 (7NET25WW)
Please
remember that these updates do not solve every possible system blue
screen, but they do resolve several problems related to the Intel Turbo
Memory driver.

Dear Tim,
First off, many thanks for the tips for resolving BSOD with Vista + Turbo Memory on X61.  I've been suffering from this BSOD for countless times since I bought in my X61 7673-CW9 in April 2008.
Even prior to having the pleasure to visit this wonderful forum, I followed both steps as indicated, and updated my Intel Turbo Memory driver to 1.5.0.1013 and my BIOS to 7NETB4WW (2.14).  However, the BSOD recurrs.
For the past two months, I've recovered my system to factory default settings using Rescue and Recovery for over twenty times, each time with the latest Intel Turbo Memory driver and BIOS.  Notwithstanding that, BSOD recurrs.
During these painful experiences, I tried two options: 1) making my X61 up-to-date by using System Update and Windows Update (including Vista SP1 or excluding Vista SP1); 2) keeping my X61 the status as factory default (i.e. without updating through either System Update or Windows Update (the automatic/scheduled update function of both is turned off)).  In either case, BSOD recurrs.
I'm 100% positive that the BSOD does not arise from any hardware or software/firmware I install.  I never install any hardware (e.g. RAM).  And, it is not caused by any software/firmware I install: the clear and unequivocal evidence is that at one time,I encountered BSOD while having restored back to factory setting and booting for the first time.
I live in Taiwan, and I seldom heard this BSOD here.  All of my friends (as most of Taiwan residents) using X61 operate in Traditional Chinese environment, whereas I operate in English environment.  In Taiwan, when booting for the first time after purchase/recovery, the Windows Vista Business system provides for lanuage choice (Traditional Chinese or English), and, once chosen, the language cannot be altered later on (unless, of course, the system is restored back to factory default settings).
My system specs are the same as the day I purchased it and are listed below (as I'm not sure if my machine type X61 7673-CW9 is applicable outside Taiwan):
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.4GHz
Memory: 1.00 G.B.
System: Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
Hard Drive: 160 G.B. @ 7,200 r.p.m.
And, of course, with Intel Turbo Memory 1 G.B.
I contacted the Lenovo support staff here in Taiwan for countless times, but they seem to be clueless.  I learned that some friends at this forum downgraded their OS back to Windows XP, but I chose not to.  The reason is simple: my purchase price for X61 7673-CW9 includes the Intel Turbo Memory, which cannot function under Windows XP (at least so far).
Therefore, I just wish to share my experience here and perhaps I can get some advice from you and other friends here.  Any advice will be tremendously and enormously appreciated.

    Thanks Tim,
I do have my T61p fully up-to-date to the latest drivers and updates (via System Update and the Drivers&Software web page when the former is not that up-to-date).
At the moment the most recurrent problem is this:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=55
which has been longly speculated here:
    http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=47755
My other angst is the boot-time chkdsk hang-up problem:
    http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=52765&highlight=chkdsk
I just wonder if this purely a Vista issue when using NV cache, the disk spinning down at almost exactly 1 hour from the beginning of the chdsk operation seems too much of a coincidence.
    This is my T61p configuration:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz
    BIOS version 1.26-1.06
    4GB RAM 2 SO-DIMMs
nVidia Quadro FX 570m with 512MB VRAM
    WUXGA LCD
    Seagate 7200.2 160 GB
    4GB RAM 2 SO-DIMMs
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit (waiting to move to 64bit)

  • Problems with Windows VISTA and WPA-2

    Hi Guys,
I am using a Linksys router supporting draft-N; it seems that after some time of usage; Windows Vista stop being able to connect to Linksys using a WPA-2 PSK.
Everytime you search for the SSID and attempt to connect, the ''network is taking too long to connect''' and Windows always informs the user that ''limited or no connectivity'' even though the signal strength is excellent.
Is that a common problem in Windows Visa (I am using Home Edition)?

Yes thats the basica command problem with Windows Vista while connecting to the Wireless Network.... In this you can need to update your Windows Vista OS with all the Latest Patches and the Service Pack to improve more stability on your Vista Computer to get connected to the Wireless Network..

  • Protools 8 compatiblity with Windows Vista and which proper audio interface?

O K i have a compaq presario pc notebook with a cpu of 2.16 ghz and 160 gb(?) hard drive with 32 bit w/ Window Vista service pack 1. I've done a little research and it seems my computer may be compatible but i'm not sure  Is ne one using pt 8 with windows vista with no problems? also i'm not so sure about which audio interface i should be using psi, firewire,or usb even though i have 2 usb ports im hearing  its not the best choice dealing with latency and all. Is ne one using pt 8 with window vista using a usb audio interface or even firewire with any problems? thanx hope to hear from you soon!!!!

    Hi again chamille2010,
Well my take would be that your rig would run Pro Tools 8 but you might struggle with the latency a bit.  I ran Pro Tools LE on a PC (with significantly lower specs than yours since it was 3 years old at the time) with a Digi 002 as my firewire interface and I did have issues with latency, which is my biggest pet peeve.  That was also on the XP Operating System so you might be better off with Vista SP1.  I would recommend going with the Digi 003 via firewire and maxing out your RAM for best results.  USB would definitely be slower and might be a cause for latency if you run into it.
That's my opinion.  Digidesign has a pretty in-depth site for making sure your system will run Pro Tools.  I'm sure you've already checked it out but just in case:

  • Database connectivity toolkit problem with WINDOWS VISTA and Microsoft jet 4.0 provider

    Hi again,
I'm experiencing a problem with Database connectivity toolkit and Microsoft Jet 4.0 provider (MS ACCESS mdb database).
I was able to get my application to work properly on my PC: WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL, VERSION 2002, SERVICE PACK 3 and Msjet40.dll ver. 4.0.9511.0 (Windows XP SP3 and Security Bullettin MS08-028).
The same connectivity toolkit seems to have problems (although I didn't get any error dialog) on a laptop with WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE, SERVICE PACK 2 and Msjet40.dll ver. 4.0.9755.0.
Does anyone have an idea whether it is a sort of compatibility issue or a different thing?
Would it be possible to include my DLLs into the installer in such a way LabVIEW application calls those DLLs instead of the ones it finds on the host PC?
Thanks a lot. Any suggestion or advice very welcome and appreciated.

I ran into this with Windows7 64 but, could not get the jet 4.0 to work.  Endnd up dumping access and used sql server express, its free, and all my code worked fine, just used a different UDL to connect.  I wasted lots of time trying to find a way of getting the jet4.0 to work with 64bit windows.

  • Home Sharing Between Mac and PC with Windows Vista and Wireless Ethernet

    Hello.
I want to ask if anyone knows what is the problem.
I have Home Sharing Activated in my two computers and File Sharing Activated too.
My MacBook Pro has iTunes 10 and Snow Leopard all updated and my PC has Windows Vista and iTunes 10.
My MacBook Pro is connected to my network wirelessly and my PC is connected by the Ethernet Cable.
    Anyone can help?

since you don't describe the problem in detail, see if something here helps:
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

Windows 7 really is version 6.1 (Vista was 6.0).
Same as Windows XP was version 5.1 (Windows 2000 was 5.0).

  • Firefox.exe is causing a blue screen of death in Windows Vista.

I was browsing the internet a few hours ago when my computer bluescreened. This is the first time this has ever happened on my 2-year-old system, so when Windows booted up again I searched for a way to diagnose the problem. The resulting Windows Debugging Tool cited Firefox.exe as the cause of the crash.
Has anybody else had this issue? Is there a solution?
    Please and thanks! :-D

I have this problem for 3 weeks now.
Blue screen occurs 2/3 times a day, only when FF running (tested with IE : problem disapears).
More blue screens occur when playing a video, but happens without Flash player anyway.
Seems to be a minidump / AppDataLocal Temp... error.
    Any idea ?

  • IPod Causing Blue Screen of Death on Windows Vista

I'm posting this in the correct forum now:
For some reason, all of a sudden, whenever I plug in or unplug my iPod to my computer, the computer crashes and quickly shows a blue screen of death before restarting. It has not done this before today. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with the iPod or the computer that would cause it to do this.
When iTunes opened, it said there was a Windows Update to fix a problem with iPods corrupting upon disconnecting from the PC, but when I tried to download the update, it said something about the update not being needed for this system. The iPod isn't corrupted, everything is still on it. I don't know what the deal is.
I tried system restore back to like a week ago, but this did nothing to help.

First, update the USB Root Driver on your computer: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 Even if there are no new drivers for your computer, follow the last part of the article and let Windows update your USB driver.
Second, be sure you are using a rear port on your computer.
Third, with only the iPod, mouse and keyboard connected (no speakers, no mic, nothing else), reassign the drive letter on your iPod. Try M or P or Z: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499

  • Error with windows vista but not xp

    Hi there all,
IT have recently changed my computer to Windows Vista from XP.
i have lots of reports that were created pre transfer and they now dont work in vista.
it seems to be a common problem when a report containts "Date Job completed" it returns an error of "ERROR DURING SQL EXECUTION DA0003" so i assumed it must be a time out error and ameded the times in regedit.
however it still doesnt work. i cant see it being a date format as a simple report that contains "date job raised" works. its just these other date ones!
can anyone shed any light on the problem im experiencing? IT have now given me my old computer back to fix the problem but im gonna need to go back to the new one again soon!!
also, i assume it must be a setting somewhere that needs changing!?!?
    thank you
    sam
    p.s. i use desktop intelligence XIR2.

    Hi Samantha,
Are you getting the error message while accessing deski through infoview or just local deski.
If it is deski through infoview, Can you please let me know which version of Internet Explorer you are using.
You can try the below steps to increase the timeout of IE in your machine and then test the report.
Now, here are the steps to increase the IE7 timeout-
Backup of your registry settings, before making any changes.
Add a ReceiveTimeout DWORD value with a data value of (<number of seconds>)*1000 in the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
For example, if you want the timeout duration to be 8 minutes, set the ReceiveTimeout data value to 480000 (<480>*1000).
    Restart your computer.
Repeat all of the above steps on every  computer that uses IE 7.
This particular error message appears because of the Timeout setting in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. By default, IE 7 has the timeout of 30 seconds.
Also, here is the link from Microsoft which identifies the issue-
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181050/en-us
Lets hope this resolves your issue.

    Gaurav

    Hi
As far as I know the Tecra M5 was delivered either with the Intel or nVidia graphic card.
On the notebooks with nVidia graphic card you can set different option in the nVidia Desktop manager; for example Enable multiple desktops
You should find it in control panel.
Unfortunately, I dont know exactly where the settings are placed in the nVidia manager because this notebook was delivered only with WinXP but Im sure you will find it.

  • Problems with Windows Vista and Speedster 945GT?

    Hi!
I've been trying to install Windows Vista on my Speedster 945GT-based system for some time now, but I am unable to get it to run stable.
It hangs on random occasions when installing and if one is lucky it's gets thru the install but then it hangs at the desktop in Vista.
I'm using the latest BIOS version out (1.2) and a Core2Duo T7600 CPU.
I have even tried other CPU's to rule out CPU error with the same results. Same goes with different sticks of memory.
Does anyone have a sollution to this problem?
Btw, it works fine when Windows XP is installed.
    Best regards
    Johan

I had similar problems with Vista 32-bit (Ultimate). I got the board with BIOS v1.0, while I also purchased a T7200 Dual 2 Core. This did not work at all. MSI Netherlands was kind enough to flash the BIOS for me with v1.2 so I could get things working. However, I was not too lucky with Vista. Could just get to the boot screen, but then it hung.
BIOS v1.3 did the trick. I have things working now, but the onboard video is a disaster. Windows Update installed new chipset drivers but this did not help. Intel Graphics drivers did also not improve things.
I started with an analog connection to my 1280x1024 Philips 170B2. Worked ok, but could not get the system working in a higher resolution than 1024x768 which is obviously not preferred. At that time, the DVI connector of my monitor was in use by another system, soon to be replaced by this one.
Instead of worrying about the resolution on the analog connection I thought it was time to hook my monitor up via DVI. And then things started to get even worse.
The POST is visible, you can see Windows starting but then there is a black screen. Windows is fully loading, I can hear through the speakers. I can even login, but still no screen.
So I went back to analog VGA and guess what - same issue with analog VGA now!
System works 'fine' in Safe Mode, but even the 640x480 boot option does not help.
My temp solution now is to use my 7600GS, but as the onboard video might be good enough for me (if it works), I would prefer to get things working.
