Chapter Title Text Frame Questions

I have a book with some side heads, and I made a master page with a simple grey background. It works great when the chapter title is short:
(the grid pattern is a screen capture artifact--on my screen is a solid grey)
I put an empty paragraph in there to scroll down the next body paragraph, and while it's not an elegant solution, it does work.
However, some chapter titles are longer and push things down:
And that pushes down the body text. So, I tried adding a chapter title text frame to the master page:
This works great visually, and also gives the chapter title more room since the upper text frame doesn't have side heads:
However, now the book files listing seems not to be recognizing the chapter title, and instead is just picking up body text from the document:
The first text frame has "autoconnect" turned off, and I named that "A" and the main body text frame "B".
Any suggestions as to how to get the book files listing to recognize the chapter title?

I have not tried this, but you could try creating a master page for the first page in the chapter. Put two frames on the master page BOTH with the flow set to A. Position the first frame where you want the title to be and position the second frame where you want the text to begin. Set the paragraph tag for the title to have no space following. Set the paragraph tag for the FIRST paragraph of the text to Keep X rows together. With X set large enough, FrameMaker would not have room to put the first paragraph in the upper frame, so it will push it to the next frame. If this works, you can even go back to your original side head format for the title. You just have to make sure the top frame is large enough to hold all titles, so that a title does not leak to the second frame.

Title and image at the beginning of video pixelated

Am a bit puzzelled about a sudden pixelation of titles and still images at the beginning of a video. I'm working on a small video and would like to start it with a company logo (PSD file) and some simple text (made in FCP with the 'Text' effect). Before rendering everything looks good, but after rendering, the very first frame of the video (the title) becomes very pixelated. I've done this many times before and never had any issues, so really don't know what's going on.
I read about the bug in FCP 7.02 with using still images at the beginning of a sequence (and then renaming all clips) - does this has something to do with it?

Hi there,
All elements in EA always appear over the entire timeline...unless you tell them not to do so. Try using Display keyframes to show and hide elements over time.
You can also use Opacity keyframes in the same way, or even position the image outside of the Stage bounds, if you prefer to do it one of those ways.

Multiple formats and frame rates in one sequence

i have material shot on many different cameras. it includes PAL and NTSC, HD and SD, 24, 25, 30, and 60 fps, ProRes, DCVProHD, DVCam, etc etc. the final product is going to HD in both NTSC 24fps and Pal 25fps, for NatGeo domestic and international.
the roughs are already done with this hodgepodge. my job is to clean up the audio (done), and send the video out in for color, titles, and graphics. i'm trying to get at least the frame rates to match at 24, much of it is already in 24 dvcprohd or prores, so i have been doing quicktime exports of the non-dvcprohd/prores video to prores, then conforming to 24p in cinema tools, then overlaying the clips in the sequence with a fit to fill edit. sync has not been a problem, miraculously, even though the speeds end up between 100 and 125 percent.
am i doing anything right, and if not, what's a preferable way to handle this mess? i tried media manager initially but nothing would relink, so i gave up and started doing the clips individually as stated above.
all i know for sure is that whatever i end up doing, they're not paying me nearly enough.

Hi Shane - Thanks for getting back to me! I figured I'd have to compress it, but
my question is - how? Initially, I used MPEG Streamclip to import the 23.98 dvd footage in as a DV/DVC Pro QT at 100% Best Quality. I then imported those files into FCP. After getting your e-mail, I went to export the files into Compressor (from FCP), and I'm only given 5 setting choices under "QT." I'm not sure which one to select . . . Uncompressed 10 bit? Any ideas? Again, thanks so much!!!

I have written several blog posts on the Premiere Elements Titler. See if any of them addresses your title needs. But all the titles are within the video, not outside the video, from static titles to crawling newsroom type text at the bottom of the video frame. None of the following demos the crawling titles, put the demo'd principles of the Titler may be of help in navigating through the Titler. Premiere Elements 11 and 12 have the same Titler.

Although most of the time Adobe demo's its features in the Quick workspace, I prefer the Expert workspace since you can see better what you are doing and thus have more control of the situation.

[Windows] Spotify Window or Title and MenuBar is left on a Windows 7 non-Aero desktop after exit

DescriptionSpotify' 1.0.10.107 leaves its Title bar, MenuBar, and frame on screen after a /File/Exit or a window [X] close when a Windows 7 non-Aero desktop theme is in use. Sometimes the entire window is left. The spotify.exe processes terminate, though SpotifyWebHelper remains. The Title bar or window has no parent and its menu bar is inactive. It is not redrawn if an object is dragged over it or by a right-click refresh. The window vanishes properly if the “Close Button Should Minimize Spotify” advanced setting is selected and Spotify is then exited from the icon in the tray. The Spotify window vanishes as expected with a fast zoom effect if any of the Windows 7 Aero themes is in use regardless of the above advanced setting.. A more detailed description, using numbered stepsWas using a Windows 7 Basic Theme with a black desktop background. Observed the above-described behavior with unknown Spotify version, believe it to have been 1.0.10.107

That you have encountered this in other apps suggests a flaw in a library common to those apps and to Spotify or some particular tool that was used to build them. I was able to replicate it on three different Win7 machines with two different CPU and graphics configurations. I couldn’t replicate it on a Windows 10 upgrade of one of those but I regard that machine as experimental until other apps more critical to me have been confirmed or made compatible with Windows 10. Windows 7 will be my workhorse for some time, so the best workaround for me is to accept the “close button should minimize Spotify” setting and the risk of leaving it active in the notification area while streaming to no one. The alternative workaround is to refresh the non-Aero desktop after closing it. It’s a second click either way.

Titles and the DVD

Hi,
First time asking, but have read some answers already that have been helpful.
I can tell you don't love title questions, but I hope you'll help anyway.
I am editing in FCP4 with video from mini DV. I have titles on black in a dark(ish) gold before and after segments, as well as, identifying titles over people as they come on screen. These titles are black with a medium blue box as background for their names and a dark gold box just underneath as background for there job title.
I used Live Type for all of these, except one of the segment titles is in motion just for kicks. (don't see a difference)
To the questions: 1. I see some fuzziness on the titles on my tv (a Sony 32" wega) I use to get that from Avid's even when I dropped the opacity (though it helped), any ideas? It's worse on the identifying titles and worse the smaller the font. Most of the fonts for everything are 30 point and American typwriter condensed, I go as low as 24 point for some long job titles and use a cursive font for a few segment titles.
Question 2. When I repostion titles in Live type It seems to sometime cause a smeared effect which will carry over to FCP, but if I adjust a little up or down it will get better?
Question 3. I burn a test DVD of part of my program in DVDSP (first time), so I used the basic setting and the titles looked even worse this time on a difference TV. again any ideas?

In live Title I picked the DV 3:2 seting which the tutorial recommended. that gave my the following settings Width: 720px, 9" at 80dpi (I don't get why 80dpi), Height 480px 6.67" at 72dpi, Frame rate: 29.97, Field domiance: None, Pixel Aspect 0.90, Start time: 1:02:29;05, time Format SMPTE Drop, Under Quality--Canvas: Normal, Movie: Normal, Preview: Draft, Color: Dark Gold, Show grid: unchecked, show rulers: unchecked, Grid Width 25px.
For the DVD I exproted as QT, Current settings, audio and video, chaptermakers.
My final project is going to be around two hours the part I tested was about 1/2 an hour. I am thinking I am going to need to use Compressor for the finished product, but that is a whole other subject. I've never used compressor--gulp!
I know this is a lot, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, first off, welcome to the forum.
First off, dv ain't great for titles-- but you can get really nice results if you're careful. Back in my avid days I always enjoyed the good titles I could get. Limited (back then) but good.
do you have a decent calibrated monitor, (not a tv?) This is really the best way to judge your work. TV's are "painted" hot and contrasty, and no two are alike. They're built that way to overcome possible terrible viewing conditions in a variety of rooms, and not the best for a uniform result every time.
To your questions:
Try to keep your luma at about 90% You'll start buzzing on some sets if you hit or go over 100% luma, especially if you have a really contrasty color for a bg. Your sizing is about what I use, depending if I'm working for a huge screen or not.
Smear? I take it you're running into interlace interference (for want of a better term.) What you're seeing is a pretty well known issue. Double click yout title to open it in the viewer and click on the motion tab. A little experimenting will show you that a title placed at even, whole numbers for vertical will look better than odd numbers or fractions.
DVD compression is a world in itself. with a show near two hours, I think you're gonna make pile of coasters in your learning curve. and don't worry about compressor. DVDSP uses the same engine-- just two different interfaces. Some like dvdsp for encoding, some like compressor better.

Title Safe Frame problem

I am encountering a problem with the text location in the Viewer and the Canvas when using the Title Safe frame. When the Viewer shows the text in the Title Safe frame, the Canvas shows a few letters are outside the frame. I have decided to use what I see in the Canvas since that reflects what is in the Timeline. Is this what I should use? Why do they show the text in different positions?

Hi Ian: Here is my progress report.
This will bring you up to date on my burning problem. It is a little long but explains how this is a continuing problem that does not seem to have a solution.
Tom wrote to me in reply to my burning problem about size - mainly the size of free space required. I commented about marking i and o for a very short 7 minute sequence, exporting to QT and trying to burn a DVD. Even then I had a 34506 error (which I think is a size issue) and the ususal multiplexing comment. Tom said: “I don’t think iDVD’s that smart. It may hold space for a full disc regardless of your content, which is probably why the write out is so long”. He is certainly right.
I went back to my desktop, selected the QT MOVIE icon and found the size was 9.35 GBs. I then learned that for this movie I had put i and o marks for a 44 minute movie, BUT did not notice that “Self Contained” was checked.
Then I went back to the desktop and found the PROJECT icon that I had saved and this one showed 6 MB. I opened this PROJECT and deleted everything past the 44 minutes, which resulted in a project or sequence size of 3.8 MB. I then exported this to QT MOVIE. It then showed the size to be 5.8 GB – too large to burn on a DVD, if all of it is burned when you click on burn. I have used the i and o approach on some of my other sequences and they burned only the selected portion. Doesn’t iDVD encode the movie and compress and expand it? Tom was right. Putting i and o markers did not reduce the size of the QT movie. Amazing. The guidelines I have read say to select the part of your project you want to export by placing i and o in the project, then export to QT. The entire movie seems to be exported anyway, even though it may burn only part of it. Does this make any sense?
Continuing, I then reduced the size of the PROJECT to 30 minutes. That resulted in a QT movie of 3.8 GB. I still could not burn a DVD.
The part I do not understand is how I was able to burn the first four DVDs. The first one is 1 hr. 13 min. with 468 still photos and 160 movie clips. The second one is 1 hr. 8 min. with 191 still photos and 240 movie clips. The third one is 56 minutes with 116 still photos and 209 movie clips. The fourth one is 53 minutes etc. I had very few problems burning these four DVDs. I cannot burn DVD #5, which is only 44 minutes. Can anyone explain why? Something must be set incorrectly, but I can’t figure out what it is.
As for trying to burn using Disk Utility, I have not been successful. I get to a certain point and get “not enough space”. Could QT be causing the problem? I followed you guidelines, but am not familiar with one part: :"You can then burn it to CD/DVD in Disk Utility just as you would any other disk". Ian, I know little about using Disk Utility. Could you give me more guidelines here?
I now have 40 GB free on my HD, have trashed preferences, rendered both video and audio, mixdown, exported to QT and again tried to burn the 44 minute project, and again the same messsage, that is, 3506 error and multiplexing error.
If you can’t burn an FCE HD project what good is it - even if the main problem is not with FCE HD?
I am also posting this to Tom since he replied to my “Burn Problem” post. Does anyone have a solution? Could iDVD be corrupted? Sorry this is so long. John

Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
I am using a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading Iphoto ?
I hope that someone is able to help in this matter , as i have to restore 12000 photos !

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

Hi Melissa - thanks for your interest. Here's the first frame, the second frame and the tween frame. I don't understand why the tween is changing the position of the object in frame 2, was expecting it to just fade from one frame to the next.

Report generation toolkit: Avoid a separation of title and image at pagebreak in a work document.

I want to generate a report with the report generation toolkit in LV7.1.
In that report I use several report VIs to append text, titles and frontpanel images to a word document template (Office 2003). That works fine.
Depending on the size and text of my generated report, I have sometimes a problem with pagebreaks: A image is set to a new page if there is not enough space to place it on the old one. That’s ok. The text/title above the image is still on the old page. That's right, but I don’t want this. I know in Word you can use the paragraph formatting options to avoid a separation. But with the corresponding VI from the toolkit (word format paragraph (adv)) it seems not to work. With this VI you should have access to "indents and spacing" and to "line and page breaks". I always and only can change the "indents and spacing". En- or Disabling line or page breaks with this VI does not work, nothing changes in a word document.
Has anyone some suggestions or other solutions?

Thanks for your input. You are right, that works and could be an alternative.
In the meantime I found a solution with creating my own activex vi instead of that from the toolkit as you can see in the attached image. Maybe this could help someone with similar problems...

How do I get the book title and author to appear on all pages?

I'm trying to create a new layout, and I can't quite figure out some of the auto-text boxes.
I'd like the book title, and author to appear at the top of the pages.
Also, I'd like the chapter title to be at the top of the page for the subsequent chapter pages, but not in the same size as the chapter title at the beginning of the chapter.
I've tried copying the chapter text box in layouts, then applying it to the chapter pages. However, when I reformat the copied box for text size and orientation, the reformat effects all instances of that text box. Grr.
(I know this all sounds like too much text and garbage on each page, but it's for an instructional piece that people will likely print a page or two at a time)

Have you looked at the Layout Section.
If it is not visible pull down the handle and the master pages are there down the list for you to add and change.
Just first duplicate any page that you may want to change and then add the name and author titles to that page and press "APPLY"

Report Title and Text Area issue when exported to pdf using Viewer

We are using OracleBI Discoverer Version 10.1.2.55.26
We have reports that displays Report title containing the following
- Report Title
- Runt Date and Time
- Page No
And text area which displays 'Last Page'
Following properties are set at the worksheet level using page setup
Report Title --> 'Print on every Page'
Text Area --> 'Print on last page'
The report when exported to PDF using Discoverer plus works fine and displays report title and text area as defeined.
But when we try to export the same report to pdf from Discoverer viewer, it displays
- Report title on first page only.
- text area on all pages
All our users accesses report using discoverer viewer so we cannot open discoverer plus to them.
Is there a solution which will enable us to export the report in pdf using discoverer viewer and displays the same output as discoverer plus.
Please let me know... If you have any questions then please feel free to ask.

Well, if typographic objects are colour managed, the colour appearance is dependent on the source ICC profile that describes the colourants in the typographic objects and the destination ICC profile that describes the colours the display is able to form and the RBC colourant combinations that will form those colours.
In general, typographic objects should have special treatment, since the expectation is not that typographic objects should be colour managed, but that typographic objects should simple be set to the maximum density of dark. On a display, that is R=0 G=0 B=0 and on a seperations device (a lithographic press) that is C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100.
If for some reason typographic objects are colour managed, and if the ICC profiles for the displays are off by half a mile or more in relation to the actual state of the display system, then the colours will not be the same. On the other hand, if those displays are calibrated and characterized, then the colourants will be converted to form the same colours on the displays.

Generally you don't use prefix (++c) operators in you for loop. Use postfix (c++).
Prefix means that it will increment the variable before the loop body is executed. Postfix will cause it to increment after.

Sometimes I forget the title of a book I am currently reading, and have to check through each book in my long list of titles in my "library" to find it again. I cant see any way of adding any additional information to each title (and author), like date downloaded, or date last read, which would help me find a particular book again quickly.
I may be missing something simple, so can anyone please help?
