Titles or Music in Project Shift when deleting unused clips from Event

When deleting unused clips from an Event ("Move Event to Trash | Delete Unused") the Titles and/or the Music / Voiceover shifts in time within the project built from clips in that Event. Sometimes, the music slides later, so instead of starting at the beginning of the project, it's slid over by 20 or so. Other times, the music stayed anchored, but the titles moved to later times. In some cases, the titles not only moved, but streched in time, so that a 5 second title placed at 10 seconds into the project, became a 47 second title, starting 35 seconds into the project! This has happened to four projects and I just verified again as part of this posting that it is still an issue. Easy enough to slide the clips and music back where they belong but now it says "Itunes" and "YouTube" is out of date; they are not - it's iMovie that got confused.

You're performing a 'Ripple delete' by using the DEL key. Use the DELETE key to perform a 'Lift delete'. The DELETE key is located just above the backslash key.

  • In FCP, holding Shift when moving a clip from track to track would lock it in position vertically.  Can you do this in Premiere Pro?

That was pretty much the question right there.

First reset position and scale. If you insist on doing this in the inspector then in the crop function in the inspector use the Type pop to select Crop. There are three options: Trim, Crop, and Ken Burns. It's easiest to do this in the viewer. After you reset position and scale, the transform function, press Shift-C. You'll see three buttons at the top as well as a keyframe button. Select the middle button and press the keyframe button when the playhead is at the start position. It'll look like this.
Go to the end position and change the crop value. It'll look like this or something like it.
    Click Done.
Can you do this step-by-step and see what happens?

  • Deleting unused clips in Events

I'd like to get rid of all video not used in each iMovie 09' video I've made but find 'Space Saver' very unclear.
Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Mark them as Rejected, then use Space Saver to move them to the Trash, then empty the Trash

  • Imovie 11: When moving clips from event to project, the top of the video clip is cut off.

I'm working with a new project. When I add clips from an event to the project window, the top of the video clip is cut off.  Quite a bit of it is cut off.  It happens on every clip.  The aspect ratio is correct and I've set the video to fit in frame.  How can I fix this?  I would really appreciate any help.

You may have stabilization turned on in the project. On one of the clips, click on the small gear icon at the start of the clip and select Clip Adjustments. In the Inspector that opens, uncheck the box "Smooth Clip Motion" against Stabilization. If this fixes it for you, do the same for the other clips.
Also, it's a good idea to turn off certain preferences in iMovie>Preferences (an iMovie menu item). In the Browser tab uncheck the boxes for both "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed" and "Apply rolling shutter correction for clips that have been analyzed". See this picture:
The stabilization process causes a zoomed in effect on the video, as it has to "average" the pixels in order to smooth any shaky motion. You therefore lose a certain amount of the picture, depending on the extent of stabilization applied. Here's what iMovie Help states (in part) about this process:
"iMovie stabilizes video by analyzing the camera motion in the video and then moving the picture the opposite way to steady it onscreen. In this process, iMovie zooms in on the picture slightly. The amount of unstable motion in the clip determines how much zooming is necessary.
Zooming in crops out some of the picture, but you can fine-tune the level of stabilization to strike the right balance between keeping the video steady and retaining as much of the picture as possible."

  • What can be done to avoid getting the following error when trying to delete unused clips he operation could not be completed.  *** -[__NSArrayM insertObject:atIndex:]: object cannot be nil

what can be done to avoid getting the following error when trying to delete unused clips in Imovie 09 "the operation could not be completed.  *** -[__NSArrayM insertObject:atIndex:]: object cannot be nil"  I use to get these type of error messages when trying to delete unsused clips from a large event 60 minutes or longer, but now I get this message when trying to reduce a 4 minute event.
Also, does anyone know if there is a limit to the total amount of space that can be taken up by Projects in Imovie 09
    Thanks for any help

    Zachy,
    It goes something like this...
Put your new drive in the enclosure. Use Disk Utility to format it, etc. I'd give it a slightly different name than the original. Let's say you have Old Disk and New Disk as your drive names. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Old Disk to New Disk. Now you should have an exact copy, which you can test by rebooting and holding down the Option key. Choose New Disk from the list and let it boot, make sure all is well.
Shut down and physically swap the drives. Take Old Disk and put it in the enclosure. Now your system has a new disk with a lot more space and you can reformat your old disk and just use it for large files or whatever.

  • Quality issue when moving clips from events to project

When I drags clips or parts of clips from events to my project, the quality drops significantly (blocking).
Original clip (H264 encoded SD video) is fine, when imported into imovie it is still fine when skimmed/viewed in the event but as soon as draged into the project, the quality is bad (when skimmed/viewed in the project) and blocking occurs, especially in dark parts of the video. Of course this bad quality remains on the exported video :-(((
Any idea where this might come from and how to overcome it ?
    Thx for your support

Apologies for bumping this again, but I'm getting the same issue and I'm wondering if it's the original HD files that are incompatible in imovie. It's odd that only a few of us are reporting it.
I'm capturing HD video in mov format (motion jpeg) from a panasonic FZ5 still camera. The footage has been imported via iphoto. It's 30fps - not the native uk frame rate - but I can't change this on the camara. When I edit in imovie, I get the same massive drop in quality as soon as I move an event to the timeline. Blocking especially on blocks of colour. This happens on playback from the timeline within imovie and on export. I've tried creating a project in both pal format and ntsc in case the frame rate is the issue. No joy. In Final cut the problem seems not to exist, but I'd prefer to manage these very simple home movies in imovie.
I'm now wondering whether to switch to a different still camera like the newer panasonics or sony hx5 as these capture in avchd (presumably 25/50 fps if sold in uk) and might get over the problem. any thoughts?

  • Deleting Unused Clips?

Is there a way to delete unused clips not used in a project?  iMovie has that option, but I can't find it in Final Cut Pro X.  Or is there a way to see which clips are used in your project and which are not?

Witih the project open, click the "Page" button in the lower left of the window. If you mouse over it, the tooltip will tell you it is the "Timeline Index".  When you open it, by defauilt it will list all clips in use with that project.  It will actually show you every "clipped clip".  So if you have trimmed a lot of stuff and have 20 "subclips" of the original clip from the Event Browser, you will see 20 clips of the same name.
If you have played around in it, perhaps it will show other information.  In that case, just click "clips" at the top and "Video" at the bottom.
It is a very useful little window.  If you want to go to a particular clip in the project, just click on it in the Index.
If you have set up titles, click the "Titles" button at the bottom, and you can go to any title by clicking on it.
Similarly, if you have set up markers, you can click "tags" at the top of the window and "markers" at the bottom of the window, then click any name and go to the marker.
A feature I really love is being able to turn markers into "todo" items to remind yourself (for instance) to go back to put in a title, or work on the color correction a bit more, or whatever.
Anyway.  More information than you asked, but that's the way to tell what clips have been used.
Unfortunately, having left many things out of FCPX from FCP 7, I guess they felt obligated to leave a few things out of "iMovie Pro" as well, and one of them is that cool colored bar that quickly informed you of what parts of what clips have been used in the project.

  • HOW TO Delete Unused Media from FINAL CUT PRO

*HOW TO DELETE UNUSED MEDIA FROM HARD DRIVE IN FINAL CUT PRO.* Keywords: disk disc drive space remove compressor
    SUMMARY:
Say your original clip is 10 gigs, you can use only what you need and delete the rest from your hard drive. I know people on the forums say to just buy another hard drive, NO! It took 2 days to figure out but here it is!!! Email me if needed at [email protected]
    QUESTION:
I captured 1 hour of video at a time and now want to delete from my hard drive all the parts I don’t want to use. I have 300GB of junk on my hard drive and I only want to use a few scenes using a few megabytes, so that I'll get most of my 300GB back!!!!
    ANSWER:
In final cut on Mac, click on one small clip (to get familiar with process), go to “file”, “export”, then “using compressor”. This will open compressor software. Your file will open in the left top window. Then you need to batch the job or jobs. IMPORTANT: I’ve also solved the Compressor problem when you press “submit” to a batch and it states “Cluster: None”. Search forum for “In compressor you experience what I have”.

Part of the problem could lie in the fact it's an imovie project coming into FCP, wouldn't rule that out. Second my be the terms you use and what you expect to happen. For example, a subclip is just a smaller clip subbed from a larger clip. It has nothing to do with media management. But you can media manage a subclip and delete the unused media.
Try this (be sure to back up the original clip first). take a long clip into the viewer, make an IN and OUT duration of like 30 frames and then subclip that, Modify > Make Subclip. a new subclip will appear in the browser with a torn clip icon and the name Subclip. Right click on the subclip and choose Media Manager.... Check the Delete unused media from duplicated clip. As you toggle that the green Modified bar at the top change from the full clip size to a tiny modified size. If it does not then one of two things ... user error or the system is screwed up. That's the easiest way to test media manager.

  • How do I delete a clip from the middle of a scene

Trying to delete a clip from a scene in the middle of a movie.
The trim option only seems to let you keep what you want but won't delete what you don't want.

The choices you mention only appear when in the Event and perform what AppleMan has described. You need to do the edit in the Project. Following AppleMan's advice, you will see this pop-up menu:
The project simply references the video clips in the associated Event. Deleting the selection from the project will not remove the video from the Event, but will just extract that portion from the clip in the project, as AppleMan described.

  • Don't understand 'Delete unused media from duplicated items'

    Can anyone help with this?
I have a large project spanned across 2 drives and want to tidy it all up to a third drive. Using Media Manager (with no specific sequences selected) it says the project size is 350Gb. If I check the 'Delete unused media from duplicated items' box it reduces to 267GB.
Given that I'm not selecting a particular sequence edit I assume it is aimaing to manage all files. So what is the variation of 84GB. If I opt for the 267GB, what is in the 84GB that I'm about to loose. I haven't duplicated anything so unsure what I'll be losing?

You won't lose anything if you copy the project with Media Manager. Test the copy afterwards to make sure it is exactly what it should be. Once you are happy with it, the original can be deleted.
You can make the copy even smaller if you exclude render files. It will have to be re-rendered only if you have to revisit the project at some point. Use the space saved for something else until it is really needed.

  • Dragging movie clip from Event pane to Project pane

When I drag a movie clip from Event to Project the top part of the clip is cut off. On body pictures I am losing people's heads! The movie clips play perfectly in the Event panel, so I know they were imported correctly.

There are two things to look at.
First, what is the aspect ratio of your project, and is it the same as your camera is shooting?
If your camera is standard (4:3), set your project to 4:3. If your camera is wide-screen (16:9), set your project to 16:9. You can do this in FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES.
Second, if your project contains a mix of 16:9 and 4:3, that is OK. You just pick the aspect ratio that you prefer. Then on each clip, go into the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool and select FIT or CROP.
FIT will letterbox (black bars). CROP will cut off the top and bottom. You can decide which you prefer.

  • I can't delete a clip from my timeline anymore, Why?

Hi I am using FCP 6 and placing clips on the timeline all day long. I don't know what I did and now I can't clip and delete any clips from the timeline. When I try the linked button I have binks once. Do any of you FCP gurus know what I did and how do I fix it

How are you trying to delete them?...are they all on one single track? What exactly are you referring to by your 'link button'? Do you mean the track selector just to the right of the 'lock' at left of timeline?
Try this...set an In/Out, make sure the track selector is highlighted, then hit delete or command-c (apple-c) to 'cut' it out.
If you want to delete more than one track at a time, you can option-click on the track selectors to select one or all.

  • IPhoto 9.6 (910.29) hangs when dragging a photo from events into a slideshow. I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

iPhoto 9.6 (910.29) hangs when dragging a photo from events into a slideshow. I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on a Mac from 2011. I am trying to edit a slideshow that was already created. I can delete a photo but I cannot add drag any more photos into it. Please help, time is of the essence! I need to finish for my daughter's first birthday!
    Thanks,

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
