Tns entry on client machine for a physical standby!

Hi all.
i am working on 10gR2 on RHEL4.I have created a physical standby on the same host. The primary and the standby database has different sid as prod and prodsb
can i have one tns entry on the client machine so that they can connect to the database even after teh switchover or failover??? or will they have to change the connection string while connecting to the database??

Hi, you can use Oracle Transparent Failover, please review the next link for get more information.

  • Static IP Assignment Not Working With Hostname Entry on Client Machines

    Hello:
I'm working through the Oreilly OSX Server book to get my server skills up and, hopefully, to prep for the certification exam. I'm running into a weird little problem though. I have gone through the forums here and I've checked other resources for Mac help and nothing matches the problem I've found.
I have the latest versions of everything (10.4.9), I've set up the static IP assignments in the Server Admin application, and everything is assigned as desired so long as I don't have any entry in the DHCP Client ID window in the client's Network Control Panel. If I don't have an ID there the Clients panel in Server Admin doesn't show the connection.
I do plan to do a local DNS as well and I'm suspecting this might be another piece of my uncompleted puzzle but I'm not sure. It just seems terribly weird that a client ID would change a MAC Address specific ip assignment, DNS or not.
I'm also curious, as a secondary and substantially less important issue, is there a way to flush out the DHCP list for clients that are no longer connected?
    Thank you for your time.
G4 Tower as Server   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You are correct about an entry in the client ID field disabling static ip assignment. I've no idea why this is as I have not found any relation between this and bootpd's static assignment method (in 'man bootpd' at least).
A local DNS does not seem to affect anything in bootpd. Indeed, you can forget about any thoughts of combining named & bootpd (e.g., getting bootpd to dynamically update ip addresses for hostnames in the dns zone files).
/var/db/dhcpd_leases contains all leases handed out from the dynamic pool. You can safely (in my experience) delete the whole file or individual entries. The IP addresses are stored there even after the lease has expired (hence increasing number of "Current DHCP Clients" in the Overview pane). However, this behaviour of bootpd seems to allow 'virtual' static IPs, even if the lease time is short, as bootpd will still try to re-assign the same IP at every opportunity, using the expired info in this file. From the bootpd man page...
The server tries to give the same address back to a client by remembering
the binding even after it has expired. The server removes an expired
lease entry only when it runs out of addresses, and needs to reclaim an
address in order to fulfill a new request.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/bootpd.8 .html
Static mappings are stored in the local netinfo database (not dhcpd_leases file) and can be viewed there under 'machines' in Netinfo Manager or with Workgroup Manager's 'All Records' inspector. Bootpd stores most of its own setup info in netinfo and looks there first when an IP address is requested. Which brings us back to your question... why doesn't it find a relevant static mapping in netinfo just because there is something in the client ID field?

There is nothing in your connect string to tell sqlplus which database you want to connect to.  Therefore it assumes (by default) that you want to connect to a *local* database whose name is identified by the value of the environment variable ORACLE_SID.  And there is no such database, so he gets the reported error trying to establish a connection to a non-existent local service.
You need to specify your target database, thusly:
    SQL>  conn sys/syspw@rmanp as sysdba
BTW, connecting to a remote database as sysdba is considered by most DBAs to be a big secruity breach.  If you really need sysdba privileges (rare) you should be logged on to the database server machine with proper OS credentials, and work from there.

  • Do I need ACF on each client machine to enable Interactive forms within WDJ

    hello All,
I want to integrate the Interactive Forms in some of my Web Dynpro JAVA Applications, which in turn will be run inside a Portal.
Wanted to know if installing the ACF on each client machine is a pre-requisite to view the PDFs directly inside the EP screen.
The EP version is 7.00 SP18. We do have the ADS configured in one of the server.
I know ACF was required on each client machine for EP 6.0, not sure about the 7.0 version though.
Where can I see the pre-requisites for using ADF forms within WDJ?
    Any pointer is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Sandip,
Do refer [this|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/2c/241a427ff6db2ce10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm] link. It has the information you need. Short text from the same link
"Interactive forms in the ISR framework are part of ZCI. They can be used as of SAP NetWeaver SPS 10 at runtime in Web Dynpro for ABAP based on Zero Client Installation (ZCI). To enable this, the forms must contain special scripting, which you insert when you create new forms in Form Builder.
Until now, you needed to install Active Component Framework (ACF) on the front-end PC to use interactive forms. As of SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SPS10, ZCI enables you to use interactive forms in Adobe Reader without any additional plug-ins. ACF is therefore no longer required for interactive forms."
So you can conclude that you wouldnt need the ACF plugin on each client PC.
    Thanks,
    GLM

do you really have to stay at that version first of all, 11gR1 is out and 9iR2 is de-supported recently and I couldnt find this release's documentation also.
What about tnsping and sqlplus connection from your clients and listener status on your server - lsnrctl status

  • Cannot Clear Critical Alert for Physical Standby Databases

10.2.0.4.0 Grid Control monitoring 10.2.0.4.0 databases and standby databases with 10.2.0.4.0 agents.
The standby databases are running on Xen guests. The O/S is Red Hat 4 Advanced Server.
I had a failure of Xen guest on Saturday that caused me to have to rebuild the standby servers. EM Grid Control successfully verifies the configurations and the status is normal for both physical standby databases. (A rebuilt logical standby database shows no alerts.)
Grid Control database targets page shows a single critical alert for each physical standby database. The alert is for "number of missing media files is 4". The metric graph shows the count as 0 since before the rebuilds. I cannot clear the alerts from the Critical Alerts page. Grid Control reports "The selected alert(s) cannot be manually cleared. They will clear automatically once the metric is no longer in a critical or warning state.".
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ray Westphal

    Thanks for the reply Anthony.
The result of the query on both standby databases is '0'. The metric graph also shows the value at '0' since before rebuilds.
And the OMS db and agents have been reset several times since I posted this.

  • Compressing redo data for Physical Standby

    Hi All,
I have been checking option of compressing redo data for a Physical Standby database. I did not find many details in the docs. Any one has implemented this kind of compression.
    Cheers/Aditya

per Oracle support, redo compression in DG makes sense only if the bandwidth between the primary & standby server is less than 100mbps and is expected to be heavily taxing on CPU.
you may check metalink article ID: 729551.1 where they have given some test stats. Not a whole lot of data, but it might help you make a good judgement.

  • Oracle DataGuard - Standy Redo log on physical Standby db

    Hello Guys,
A quick question on my 10.2.0.2 db with Windows 2003 x64 OSs.
I have 2 machines - One for primary & the other for physical standby
I have successfully setup DG with Real Time Apply and also tested switchover & failover scenarios and they work well and as expected...
But I have a query which popped up when I was trying to set this up at home.
I create the physical standby db by shutting the primary db and copying all the datafiles, tempfiles, online redo logs and then creating a standby control file which will be used for the physical standby db to start off with.
After mounting the standby db, I tried to create standby redo logs files starting with Group 4 but I got error that standby group 4 already exists.
Upon querying v$logfile view, I noticed that the standby redo logs that I created on primary are also showing up on the standby db which I understand is from the standby control file.
So here is my quesiton: What is correct method of creating these standby redo logs on the standby database?
I know that I could drop those 4 standby redo logs from the standby db and recreate them but all the DG docs online and the documents that I have referred say that I should create the standby redo logs on the standby as I did on the primary but how can this duplication be avoided i.e. from the standby control file?
I know that I could use another method to create a hot backup such as RMAN etc...but I wanted to follow this way of shutting down the primary and copy the relevant database files.
Any help appreciated...and thanks in advance guys!
    -Bharath

so with the setup that I used, i.e. create a standby control file which contains info about the standby redo logs at the primary site, should I also copy over the standby redo logs from the primary to standby as I only copied the datafiles, tempfile(s) & online redo logs? But then the filenames of the standby redo logs will be the exact same as that of the primary. Will that cause any issue during a switchover/failover?
I don't remember exactly how I did it when I got the whole thing working but I have a vague remembrance that I drop the std. redo log files entries from the std database and then recreate new ones with different filenames (as compared to primary).
    Thanks
