To Upgrade to 3.1.2 OS or Wait?

I have an iPod Touch 2G running 2.2.1 OS. Everything has been running quite well. I've been patrolling these message boards since the 3.0 release and have noticed many horror stories about upgrading (i.e. wifi crippled). Now that we're at 3.1.2 it seems that people are still having problems. More apps are requiring an upgrade so I'm really on the fence. With so many bad upgrade stories, I'd like to hear of some success stories. What are some steps to ensure a pleasant upgrade experience? Should all internet security and antivirus software be disabled during the upgrade process? OR is it simply best to wait for 3.2?
Please shed some light on your upgrade experience so I can make an informed decision.
Much Thanx

I upgraded my iPod touch software from 2.2.1 to 3.1.2 with the promise of tweaks and additional features. The one feature not mentioned is that internet connectivity is wiped out. Some online forums Ive checked prove that this is a worryingly common issue with this update, and yet Apple do not seem to be aware of it or have an official solution to it. It just seems a bit surreal that an answer can only be found on a forum for users. Like "Go work it out for yourself" I have contacted customer support twice explaining the problem. I was given a refund but no solution the first time, and second time a lengthy apologetic explanation that cuctomer support could not provide a technical answer, and links to iTunes support which displays answers to pretty basic setting up problems etc. I would simply like to revert to the original software my iPod came with, but Iam open to advice from Apple or anyone out there in how to get my iPod connected again. Someone must have susssed this out somewhere ?

  • Upgrading to Quad G5 or should I wait? (If so howlong?) CPU power needed?

I have been proscrastinating about upgrading to a Quad G5 (I can wait a bit) mainly because of Logic Pro. Now should I wait for the next desktop/Intel machine from Apple or will I get some good use from a G5 before this is released? If anyone can shed some light on the matter I would be most appriciative. This is a hard topic to search for, please point me on the right direction if its already answered.
Also maybe a better question is: What difference does CPU power make to Logic and how?

I would wait till the next PowerMac comes out. from what i understand the whole apple family will go intell this year. If the iMac is dual core and people are saying they scream @ $1300.00. The PowerMac for $2000.00 will have to realy have to be worth the extra money. I expect all intel PowerMacs to be Quads. my buddy bought a $2500.00 15" PowerBook 4 weeks before the MacBook Pro came out. he got stuck w/ half the computer that the MacBookPro was at the same price. Now he didn't know the Intell MacBookPro would be coming out but you do know that a new intel based PowerMac will be here real soon (probably next quarter), so my advice to anyone would be to wait it out if you can.
This is just my opinion based on what apple has anounced and what apple has done this year.

  • Upgraded to 7.6.2... wait... no...

iTunes has been bugging me for days that there's a 7.6.2 update. So I go to Software Update, and it says I'm all up to date! So I go back and re-check the 'About iTunes' and it says I'm on 7.6.1 (9). Fine then. I go to the Apple site and download the latest iTunes installer. I run it. It says I'm all upgraded. iTunes relaunches... and it's still 7.6.1 (9). What the heck?

Which would lead me to ask. "Just how many copies of iTunes do you have on your machine?"
Run a search for iTunes.app and see what pops up. You may have updated the one in the Applications folder but the Dock shortcut is linked to another copy that is ratholed on your hard drive somewhere.

  • After upgrade to 10.0.1.22 - "please wait while windows configures itunes"

    Hi all,
After successfully running iTunes without problems including version 10, I routinely upgrade to the latest version 10.0.1.22 and all of a sudden now I keep getting this "please wait while windows configures itunes" dialog with a status bar before the iTunes application properly launches. Once its up, its functioning fine, but its annoying to get this dialog and status bar every time I use the application. What can I do? I tried a repair install and it didn't do anything.

There's no trace of any other itl file on my PC
Are there any files /Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes libraries/ ?
guess this means I won't see my apps and music again
Just because they do not show in iTunes does not mean they ar enot on yoru computer.
Besides, you do make regular backups of your computer correct?
Look in /Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ for your apps and /Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/ for everything else.
If they are there then iTunes menu File > Add folder to library and select /Music/iTunes/ .

  • Fire Fox used to be so fast, since I upgraded to4 ,it is turtle slow, been waiting 10 minutes for it to load

I just turned on my lap top,15 minutes ago and fire fox still hasn't loaded,I recently upgraded to fire fox 4 and since it has been terrible.

I've posted this elsewhere but am getting not satisfaction so here goes again:
I've had this problem since Firefox 6.0 came out. I reinstalled a backup disk image file from back in June, uninstalled FF, did all the updates, installed FF 3.6.21 and everything was fine. After using it for a while, I downloaded and installed FF 6.0 and the same problem is back. When I go to various websites, part of the images on the page will load, then it stalls out. Sometimes hitting stop and refresh will help, sometimes not. I've tried various patches recommended but none do anything to help.
My system is Windows 7 Pro SP1. IE works fine. I'm really getting frustrated with this and almost ready to give up and start using Chrome.

  • Since upgrade, Time Machine starts and stalls.  Waited 24 hours. Formatted disk-no change.

Since upgrade to Mavericks on Mini, Time Machine starts and stalls.  Says "292 Mb of 147.68 Gb", wheel spins. Waited 24 hours, no change. Formatted disk-no change.  Tried every solution found in threads; no fix.  Doing manual backups. Help!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • My 3GS 3.1 can't upgrade to IOS5, I tried but after waiting for 6 hrs of back up, it went for nothing.. grrr...

My iphone 3GS w/ iOS 3.1.3 cant upgrade to iOS 5, i tried upgrading but after waiting for backing-up for almost 6 hours it just stopped, i done this twice already, Help...

Try to give you phone as much free space as you can. Copy all data you don't need to your computer.
Delete the photos from the camera roll after you transferred them as well, same for music, videos, podcasts, etc.
Back up manually before you do this by right clicking on your device and choosing "backup".
then follow this article: iOS 5: Updating your device to iOS 5

  • Wow, i was waiting for fcp x to upgrade to a 27" imac. lucky i waited. just saved north of £2k

    i'll wait a little longer, i think.

Are you worried about the negative publicity about FCP X?
Unless you are a top Broadcast/Hollywood editor working with a team of others, you will have no problems.
The complained about deficiencies only apply to teams of editors using specialised workflows.
Amateurs, prosumers and most professionals will find the app excellent.
So you can go ahead and get the new iMac  .  .  .  .  .  together with FCP X of course!

  • Should i upgrade from early 2008 macbook pro or wait until 2015?

    Hi,
I'm debating on whether to bite the bullet now and buy the new macbook pro (15 inch) or wait until next year. i know this is practically obsolete in Apple years, but it actually still runs ok for my purposes (not used for work). I added RAM to 6 and am currently running Yosemite. I've read that many people keep their original macs for years. Advice helpful. Thanks!

Do you NEED  new computer for any particular reason or is this just a "Want"?
If you need a new computer NOW then buy one. If not then wait.

  • Apple TV can no longer connect to network after upgrade.

I had heard that lots of people were affected with this problem with the software upgrade before this one so I deliberately waiting until this one came out before taking a chance. I was wrong.
After updating to 4.4. (3140) I can no longer connect to my network. It says there was a problem and gave the error messaged number: (5) in brackets.
I've had nothing but problems with both Apple TV's that I have owned, version 1 and this new version 2. I've a good signal from my router and I've used three different ones over the time I've had the two apple tvs.
    Anyone got any ideas.
I can't connect the apple tv directly because they are too far apart in the house. I can only connect by wifi.
There is nothing wrong with my wifi because I'm connected to it fine though my imac, iphone and ipad and laptop, (not all at the same time)

Ok, here's a solution, courtesy of our friends at AppleCare.
Unplug the router for 90 seconds.
I was running ATV2 with a Time Capsule.   The TC thought the ATV was still connected using its former IP address so wouldn't let it reconnect with a new one.
Hope this works for anyone else with same problem.

  • Passing on 4.0.2 upgrade???

I puchased 2 iPhone 4's two weeks ago with my wife and I have been following as many threads as possible to educate myself on what is working, works well, and what is not working well.
It would be an understatement to say that there have been more than a few comments on hiccups associated with the 4.0.2 upgrade that iTunes is suggesting whenever I sync.
I'm seriously considering just holding out till the next release rather than risking the hiccups I have been reading about.
Can I do that, or do I have to do each upgrade in sequence?
I know that I can return it if there is a problem, but I am not interested in a refurb'd replacement if I can avoid it.
    Opinions???

Do whatever you like, but there has not been one single upgrade - since the very first upgrade three years ago - that has not had about the same response on these forums.
Most people never have an issue, have never heard of these forums, and have no idea that the updates aren't working for everyone.
It probably matter little if you upgrade or not, but if you are waiting for an update to come without the resulting complaints, then it will never happen.

  • Ordering a phone at retail price from the site, not eligible for upgrade

I am planning to pay retail for the iPhone once it becomes available for pre-order (judge me as you wish) but I have never ordered a phone from the website before, upgrade or not. I am not the account holder, that is under my mom's account on the website. Here are my questions -
    1. Am I given the option to pay for the phone with any credit/debit card or must it be the one associated with the monthly bill?
    2. When I go to upgrade the phone it says upgrade is not available on any of the lines (which is why I am paying retail) - does it still allow me to select the phone and then take me to the next page and show that I must pay retail and then I start the checkout process?
    3. Must the purchase be done on the account holder's account?
    4. Will the four digit Billing Code be needed to purchase the phone? What other information from the account holder is needed?

I am not the account holder, that is under my mom's account on the website. Here are my questions -
    1. Am I given the option to pay for the phone with any credit/debit card or must it be the one associated with the monthly bill?  You can pay with any method you choose - immediately with any card, or add it to the bill (if qualified to do so).
    2. When I go to upgrade the phone it says upgrade is not available on any of the lines (which is why I am paying retail) - does it still allow me to select the phone and then take me to the next page and show that I must pay retail and then I start the checkout process? Yes, it will only give you full retail pricing options.  However, I have heard/read somewhere that initially, pre-orders for the iPhone will ONLY be available to those who are currently upgrade eligible.  We'll have to wait and see...
    3. Must the purchase be done on the account holder's account?  I believe so, or you must be an account manager to be able to do anything that affects the plan, billing, etc.
    4. Will the four digit Billing Code be needed to purchase the phone? What other information from the account holder is needed?  I don't know the answer to these - and it may be a moot point anyway if you are not currently upgrade eligible.  You may need to wait till the release date to try and order, rather than do a pre-order.

  • Time to  upgrade?  or is apple close to something new.

i am getting a new system - so it makes sense to upgrade to the new final cut studio. but... it seems like every time i buy something from apple... 3 weeks later they release a new version of it. so i am asking - should i wait on the new studio? or just go. I am final cut 6 now.
    thanks
    mr c

There is no indicating of any pending release of an upgrade version of FCS.
    None.
Waiting for a new version can be short or long because Apple knows when one will be released.
    FCS3 works pretty good now.

  • Why is it I can't just buy the new iPhone without needing an upgrade?

This has been the most bizarre experience I have ever encountered, and it's enough to put me off Verizon and Apple altogether.
Yesterday, I went to pick up the new iPhone for myself and my wife, having gotten and email that we were eligible for the Early EDGE upgrade. I'm first told at the store that Apple is only allowing 1 phone per person to be sold... Ok, fine. So I get inside and, being the decent gentleman I am, opt to upgrade my wife's line first and will just do mine later that day. Upgrade for her goes smooth, now it's time to do mine. Oh, wait, apparently the EDGE upgrade can be applied to one line, and it was just my wife's; a detail that was cleverly hidden at the bottom of the email in black on grey text after all the marketing copy about how great the new edge program is. The Verizon rep tries to think of ways to get me the phone cheaper, but ultimately can't. I ask if I can just buy the phone at cost, and I'm told no because it doesn't go on sale to the general public until later, though no time is given. Again, Apple's rules.
Now, I'm pretty sure Apple could care less about exactly when someone buys their phone if they have the cash to do so, and I'm doubly sure they don't care about making sure those with upgrades can get the phone. All of this is starting to sound a little iffy. Whatever, I let it slide.
It is now 6pm, still yesterday, and we head into Best Buy to look at cases and see if they have a display 6 Plus to check out, as I'm curious about the size. I ask a Best Buy rep if they have any iPhone 6s left; they do; 128gbs? Yup. Silver??? Yup. VERIZON???? Yup. I'LL TAKE IT! One iPhone 6 at full price please! Oh, wait, no; Apple boogie man says I can't buy the phone for full price, I have to have to qualify for an upgrade. (I'm getting more and more ****** as I'm typing this, FYI). Ok, so now clearly something is amiss. 2 different locations- the official Verizon Store AND Best Buy are telling me I can't buy the phone without an upgrade, and both of them suggesting Early EDGE, even though I have the cash to just buy it. I tweet my frustration to both VerizonWireless and Apple. AC from Verizon Support tweets back sayings they should have let me buy it... Wow, this is ridiculous.
Can someone please clarify this: who is correct here? Is it really Apple playing gate keeper and looking out for those upgrade-only customers? Why is it 2 different places told me the same thing, yet the support rep is telling me something different?
At this point I'm just not going to both attempting to get the phone for a while since this has put me off even trying, but some clarity on just what is going on would be nice. Also, please talk to your Director of Customer Loyalty about his team's email design. While I'm fine with finding out it was just one line, (though I would have preferred both since my wife and I have been on the same account since it opened...), burying that information at the bottom of the email is not going to help retain customers. Expiration dates and other terms of service are fine there, but which line the upgrade applies to needs to be surfaced sooner.

It sounds as if you only had one line with an upgrade available. So you can only upgrade one line. For you to upgrade as well, you will have to wait until your upgrade is available. You can check that at MyVerizon. That's just how it works. All carriers and phone brands are the same. I have to wait until February to upgrade. The only thing you can do to get the new iPhone, is add a new line. But then you're paying for a line you don't need.

  • ICal lost end dates and ∞ sync conflicts after iOS4 upgrade

After upgrading my sacrificial iPod 3 (I’m waiting to upgrade my main iPhone 3GS) and synchronizing it to my home MacBook Pro 2007 17", I got huge numbers of old repeating meeting which seem to have lost their end-date, e.g., “Palm-size PC Porting Lab” on June 28th this millennium, which I assure you is an error. I restored from a desktop backup, overwrote the iOS4 Calendar data, and synced again.
After that, I had a miserable day full of a dozen or so Resolve Sync Conflicts dialogs—sometime three or four in a row after a single, very slow, sync. Several times two sync processes used up all my real memory (using over a gigabyte, out of three) and once it even used up all my disk space (I had 29G free). I also had a few rounds of conflict on my work MacBook Pro 2009 13", synced via MobileMe.
Some historical notes: My calendar data is quite large, going back to Newton days via PalmOS, and iPhone OS 3 never handled it properly, e.g., both search and over-the-air sync are broken on my 3.1.3 iPhone. MobileMe sync data also gets corrupted every few weeks. And “Palm-size PC” was Microsoft’s court-ordered renaming of their trade-mark infringing Palm PC.
    Macaulay‘s Law of Software Upgrades:
“To think nothing of symmetry and much of convenience; never to remove an anomaly merely because it is an anomaly; never to innovate except when some grievance is felt; never to innovate except so far as to get rid of the grievance.”

Deleting my caches per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2481, and restoring and rebooting a couple of times, seems to have shut up the warnings, at least for now, but there's still some data loss, e.g., two meetings on 6/21 and 6/22 don't show up any more on my main Mac, but do show up on both my sacrificial iOS4 iPod, and my real 3.1.3 iPhone. (I’m also having trouble with a Note failing to sync from my iPad, but I haven’t tried that yet since nuking my caches.)
