To use a tv as a computer monitor..

what do i have to get. we want to watch movies that are on my computer on the tv, but were not sure what to do. we have an HDTV.

It depends on the connections on both the TV as well as the computer if you have VGA on both then you can go VGA to VGA if not you may have to go hdmi to VGA which will require an adapter to accomplish that since there is not a straight cable which offers both of those connections as far as I know.  Basically as long as you have both the same connection on the computer and the television then you are golden remember tho s video wont do it because it only transmits images not audio

  • Ipad using in Business on a computer monitor?

Does anybody expect, that airplay from Ipad to Apple TV will sooner or later transfer the screen to full screen in order to utilize the whole screen size on the monitor?
I would like to use the ipad for business as a computer replacement and have found solutions for all my expected problems. Only the screen is left and I am not so keen to have a 24 inch monitor, which is utilized only partly, when I transfer the ipad screen on it.
Have not heard any rumors that this may come, but only saw frustrating pictures of small ipad screens on large monitors.
Thanks for any input. If this is not coming soon, I guess I will better stick to my computer.
    Cheers
    Michael

By "full screen" are you referring to the black bars down the sides of the image when using apps?
If the screen you are connecting to is widescreen 16:9 ratio, an iPad screen cannot fill it as the iPad screen is 4:3 ratio. Widescreen 16:9 videos played va Airplay already fill the screen.
It depends on the size of the content you are sending to the screen whether it appears full screen.
Most decent monitors and TVs have aspect ratio settings allowing you to override the display. It should allow you to stretch a 4:3 ratio image to 16:9 ratio.

Yes I have tested the YUV and RGB output out of the HDMI on the video card and yes the YUV output is not converted. Now the codecs and color space used along with how the Application draws out will have an effect on that.. However once again I have tested this with many clients and the YUV preview is exactly the same as their DVD preview from their deck. I am sure there are many editors here that will confirm that.
Yes I can confirm that. Look up Colorimeters and what they do. I suggest you start here:
    http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=1454
Do you honestly think that publication and still editors could edit on Computer LCD's if they could not accurately calibrate them? I dont talk to many that use an I/O device for that.
The YUV capability of the LCD has to due to what panel they use and what they program the firmware to do. Samsung often has 2 lines for many of their Monitors. One uses a standard RGB panel used by standard computer monitors and another uses a panel that is used in LCD TV's which will handle both. That is an example of when the YUV support is added to the firmware. Keep in mind hardware devices/ie gear like TV's and Decks have the ability to convert RGB to YUV if that is what they do or vice versa. So I can send a YUV signal to a RGB device but if that RGB device does not have output color tables for YUV then it will process that signal to RGB.
Geforce Cards Support 10 bit. However they only support 10 bit via Direct X and not OpenGL. If an application is written with a Direct X API then you can absolutely have 10 bit color output. Adobe uses Open GL for their API so geforce cards dont output 10 bit. I was just correcting an incorrect statement that Geforce cards cannot output 10bit. BTW Geforce cards can actually output 12bit because the Deep Color standard includes up to 16 bit. This limitation is sctrictly due to the application and not the cards.
The Source on that was a confirmation post by an Nvidia Rep right here in the Adobe Forums. You might also want to read up on Deep Color here:

Upgrade your GPU to full 3D capability with NVIDIA 3DTV Play software, enabling 3D gaming, picture viewing and 3D web video streaming. See www.nvidia.com/3dtv for more details."
    http://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/faq.aspx
"Deep Color: HDMI 1.3 supports 10-bit, 12-bit and 16-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 8-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification, for stunning rendering of over one billion colors in unprecedented detail"

    18. What is the maximum resolution available for use with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter?
The resolution available with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is 1920 x 1200. VGA displays that use higher refresh rates (such as 85 Hz) at resolutions of 1600 x 1200 or greater may not generate video properly until you lower the refresh rate.

    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.
How do I select additional resolutions on my display?
You can use the Display pane of System Preferences to specify how your display works. Not all options appear for all display models. By default the best resolution for your display will already be selected in System Preferences.
To select a different resolution, use the Scaled option. Some additional resolutions may be available when you hold the Option button.
I hope this information helps ....

Just bought Samsung S22B310B computer monitor and hooked it up to my mac mini. I have my mac set to the 1920X1080 resolution but the entire screen (21.5") is not filled. How do fill the screen? it fills the screen on other resolution settings. I have it hooked up regularly and not to the DVI hook up. I'm not a computer savvy person please help!

That monitor supports both (digital) DVI and (analog) VGA connections, so you should not need a converter or use a different adapter.
You should use the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter and a (digital) DVI cable to the monitor.

I don't know much about computers, so please be patient. I started using Airport and I recently noticed a "network" option right below "Macintosh HD". When I click on "network" it shows "b67446000000" with a computer monitor icon and "connection failed". When I right click on this and select "Get more info" it displays nothing, just the spinning wheel. When I select "Connect As" it asked for my password to connect to "Server b67446000000". This may have been on my computer since I got it, I never paid much attention. Is this part of the operating system or has someone hijacked my computer? Why would I need a server...it's just me and my one computer? Maybe someone has hacked in through Airport? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is your airport a Time Capsule.. if so it is able to serve files on the network.
The number is the MAC address of the network in the router.
Please reset the apple router whatever is and redo the setup.. this time give it a simple name.. eg TCgenX where X is the actual gen of the unit and give it a simple wireless name.. TCwifi and a simple password with 8-20 characters mix of upper and lower case and numbers.
Perhaps even better give me a screenshot from the computer of the airport utility showing me the Airport with its MAC address.

Apple sells adapters from either 30-pin or Lightning connectors to either HDMI or VGA. Check them out in the Apple Store at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/ipad_accessories/cables_docks or your national equivalent "iPad Cables & Docks" store page.
Be sure to read the comments on whichever adapter is appropriate to your iPad model and your monitor model. Not every user has found satisfaction using them (though many have).

    Hi,
I am trying to connect my Mid-2009 Macbook Pro to my new YAMAKASI CATLEAP Q270 SE 27" LED 2560X1440 WQHD DVI-D Dual Computer Monitor.  I am not having a lot of luck.
    My machine:
    OS: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Processor:  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
I am trying to connect it using the:
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
    DVD-D HDMI cable
YAMAKASI CATLEAP Q270 SE 27" LED 2560X1440 WQHD DVI-D Dual

    Here is what is happening.
    1. I connect the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter + HDMI Cable to Monitor
    2. Main monitor powers up like it is trying to display
    3. Laptop Monitor displays second part of desktop
    4. I can never get the Yamakasi to display a picture
Here is what I have tried:
    1. Different HDMI-D cables
    2. ATLONA AT-DP400 Dual Link DVI to Mini Display Port Converter
    3. Zapping the P-Ram
    4. Powering monitor with laptop closed
    5. Forcing the system to see the second monitor
    The nearest I can figure:
    - The laptop does see the catsleap (it displays resolutions I can set it to)
I am completely stumped, I was hoping someone could advise me.
    Thanks,
    Don

    Hey Kytarx,
I found the winning combination this weekend.
    I tried:
    - Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
    - ATLONA AT-DP400 Dual Link DVI to Mini Display Port Converter
    - Monoprice Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI®, DVI & DisplayPort Adapter
    My experience:
    - Altona didn't work at all, and their support claimed it would not.
    - Monoprice didn't work to Dual DVI, it did work to HDMI (great price I wish it did)
    - Apple Mini Displayport adapter did work, but would only work with certain USB + Display port combos.
The thing that was tripping me up was that two of the Dual DVI-D cords were bad.  Once I found the working cord, it was easier to find the working adapter.  The experience I did find to be a frustrating / expensive one. However, the Monitor itself is beautiful.
    Hopefully this helps someone else..

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

  • How do I turn off computer monitor when watching DVD movie on TV monitor?

I think this is really a Leopard question because it involves setting up 2 monitors in System Preferences within OSX. 1) I have a wide screen TV connected to my iMac (Intel White Late 2006) through the Mini-DVI port and a separate audio cable. This connection works fine. 2) The purpose of the TV screen is only to watch DVDs using the DVD player and iDVD in my iMac. 3) In System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement, both my computer monitor and the TV screen appear as separate monitors. I have the setting to mirror each other. With this setting, the DVD movie plays on both the iMac computer screen and on the TV screen. 4) FINALLY, MY QUESTION: When watching a DVD on the TV screen, I would like to turn off the monitor in my iMac so that the screen is dark (in sleep mode to save power, etc.); I want only the TV screen to display the movie. How do I turn off only the iMac screen? Thank you. Dale

That's impossible. It can only be done on a laptop but not on an iMac.

  • DVD Quality: NTSC monitor vs. Computer Monitor/Plasma

I have created a DVD, and I am having an issue with the quality.
When viewed on an NTSC monitor (i.e. my television) everything looks great. When viewed on a computer (various Macs PCs) the custom menu background looks horrible, and the video looks horrible as well.
Everything looks great when putting it together, but when the disc is created the quality suffers.
Since the majority of the people who will view the DVD will be using a computer, does anyone know how to create the DVD so that it looks great for computer users?

    Brian,
I'm sorry that your question got subverted. You are new to the forum, and the forum is usually a place you can come to and get help. Your original question: I have created a DVD, and I am having an issue with the quality. is a good question that has come up, over and over, on the forum since the begining of iDVD.
DVDs, as they stand now, were designed to be viewed on TV sets - not computer monitors with much higher resolution than a TV set. Some day soon (perhaps) we will be able to create and view higher resolution discs using new technology that I'm sure will look great on HD TV sets and computer monitors. Until that time, enjoy looking a the DVDs you make on a TV set or less than full screen on a computer monitor. It will be a great video creation learning experience for you and you will be all ready to go when the new technology arrives.
Keep asking questions on the forum - that's the way we ALL learn.
