Toshiba hard drive no longer recognised on Macbook Air

Hi everyone
I wondered if you could help? I have a Toshiba external hard driver (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00560Z2ZM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=U TF8&psc=1) which I purchased last November. I reformatted it and it worked swimmingly with my Macbook Air and any PC I plugged it into until a few weeks ago. It still works with PC's but my mac doesn't recognise it at all. It doesn't show in my desktop or disk utility and I have made sure everything is selected (i.e. 'show external hard drives') but still no luck.
The blue light is on but it no longer makes a noise, although it still does when plugged in to a PC. From what I can gather it can't be a hard drive fault, surely?!
Does anyone have a solution to this? I'd really appreciate it!

External Hard drive will not mount on Macbook Air (mid-2011) OSX 10.9.4

Needs some help resolving this issue. External hard drive (Toshiba v63600-C) will not mount anymore on my mothers-in-law's macbook air. She notice this problem starting on the Aug 6th. You can see it in the Disk Utility but is not mounted. I can get the her ext hard drive to mount on my Macbook Pro with no problem. I also tried my personal ext hard drive (Seagate) on her Macbook Air and it will not mount. Not sure what is going on here. Any help is appreciated in resolving this issue.

You may believe this is Apple's problem but I just like Baltwo have had absolutely no problems with any of my Firewire drives in Lion. So unless you can come up with much stronger evidence to the contrary, I doubt that your feeling are going to carry any weight at all.

Portable External Hard-drive is not recognised on Macbook Pro after latest update

Recently my Seagate Portable hard-drive is no longer recognised in Finder, disk utility or the system profile. It no longer sufficiently powers the device as no light appears but the external hard-drive does make a noise. The device still works with other macs.
So far I have tried turning it off and on and have consulted my local apple store with no luck.

Do other peripherals work when connected to the MBP?

External Hard Drive No longer Appearing on Macbook Pro

Hello, I have a Iomega ldhd-up 1TB external hard drive which I have owned for about 3-4 years. The enclosure case of the hard drive is very poorly designed and the port for the USB cable does not fit the cable tightly. Over the years I often would have to turn off the hard drive and adjust the cord so it would appear on my computer. (yes i know its a bad idea to turn it off without unmounting, but i didn't have much choice)
However, as of today, it is no longer appearing at all no matter what I do. (not on the desktop, or disk utility, or anywhere). It is making the same sounds and the light on the external is showing up as if should be working though.
Does anyone have a fix for this or suggestions to make my hard drive appear and function again. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Since you have had a history of connection problems with the Iomega, get a new enclosure for the HDD. That of course assumes that the HDD is functional.

Freecom hard drive no longer recognised by Time Machine

I have a 1TB Freecom Hard drive which has worked fine for nearly 3 years. It has suddenly stooped working, no drops or knocks. It doesn't show up on disc utility. I've tried other USB cables and plugged it into another macbook. Not picked up. I can feel and hear the disc spinning, no clicking or crunching. Freecom not very helpful at all. Any suggestions?

External Hard drive not working on my Macbook Air

I've been using my external hard drive for more than 6months now on my mac and for some reason today it won't show up. I've run a disk utility check on it, and tried repairing it but it just says that it has an error and can not be fixed. I am quite stressed about this because it works fine when I use it on my tv and I am able to access my files, but unfortunately because of the low amount of data storage on the macbook air I am unable to save a lot on it, therefore have my external hard drive to save everything on. I am a university student with assignments due very soon! I need help please and urgently!

The EHD has failed and needs to be replaced. If you have not been backing it up then you are about to learn a difficult lesson about why backing up is absolutely critical.
If you have another computer available and that machine can see the data on the EHD then copy the data to that computer. When you replace the EHD simply move the data back.

What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen. Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

Hard Drive Failure on Rev 1 Macbook Air. What are my options?

My HD on my Macbook Air (Rev 1) 1.6 ghz 80 gb pata HD has failed. so I am going to have to take to it an Apple Service provider to fix. My question is what options do I have, I.e. Could I upgrade disk size, put in an SSD drive instead or is my only viable option to go for a like for like change. grateful anyones thoughts.

Lots of people have swapped out for SDD. If you are going through a service provider then best to ask them what they are comfortable doing. It may be they will only install what they supply and maybe only Apple authorized parts.

External Hard drive No Longer Readable by Macbook Pro

I've been using a PQI Portable HD 551 external drive to back up my files for some time now. I haven't backed up since 9/21/12 and I tried to today and got the error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I've had no problems with the disk since I reformatted it for Macs, so I'm not sure what the problem is. The USB outlet works for my other external harddrive just fine.

Have you tried checking with the external drive's manufacturer's web support site for FAQs, updated drivers or firmware?

I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount" and "diskutil info disk2." Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help? Thank you. blelambert

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

My Macbook Pro OS 10.7.5 will not recognize toshiba hard drive. I will register on an iMac running the same OS. Any ideas?

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that i used with MacBook. I now have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.5. It does not register that the Toshiba hard drive is plugged in, yet if I plug it into an iMac running the same OS it does work.

I don't know the answer to your problem, but until you resolve it do not upgrade OS X.
I would suggest you try a reinstall:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks

OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Can't get my external hard drive to show up on MacBook Pro

I used Time Machine to keep backups for my MacBook Pro using the latest version of Lion. I backed up to a WD external drive. My computer went to be repaired and they had to put in a new hard drive. When I got home and plugged in the external drive it appeared on my desktop. The Apple rep told me to drag over folders from the backup. I looked through a few of the backups (dated) and everything seemed to be there. But I got the spinning wheel as I tried to copy over "latest". I couldn't get rid of it and had to reboot.
So next it appeared, showed one folder but when I clicked on that folder there was nothing inside.
Then I couldn't see the hard drive any longer. Now I take out the drive and plug it in again and the drive won't appear in the list of devices. I use the disk utility and it doesn't see it either.
Needless to say I'm pretty concerned. I've had the problem of an external drive not appearing a few times over the years but a reboot or unplug and plug back in always fixed it. not this time.

If you have recently upgraded to Lion, it would be probably a matter of drivers. You should go to the official web site and download the latest drivers. If not, try to format the HDD with disc utilities. If your disc doesn't appear even in disc utilities, try to format it with any copy of windows in fat 32 format
